Meet The Elite: Yelp Houston Spotlight On Ako E

Posted by Farrah Akhtar

As the Yelp Houston Community Manager, I often get asked by business owners, newbie Yelpers and other members of the Houston community: "Who are these Elite Yelpers?" Aside from being the most authentic, social and influential members of the Yelp community, Elites certainly set the standard for what Yelp's all about – having a passion for local businesses and sharing that local love and knowledge with others.

So starting this month, Yelp Houston will spotlight members of the H-town Elite Squad in a series of 'Meet The Elite' blog posts!

...Starting with Ako E, Yelp Elite since '09 with a whopping 349 reviews, 258 photos and counting!

Why did you first start yelping?
I stumbled upon Yelp when I was looking up the phone number for a hair salon I was using at the time. The review was old and not very favorable, so I decided to write about my experience. After I wrote my first review I was hooked!

What do you love most about Houston?
Bayou City, Space City... Houston is a great place to live. What I love most about our fine city is the people. Houston is considered the most diverse city in Texas (and the US!), and it is very apparent with the choices of restaurants we have here. And of course, the down-right friendly people living here...

Current favorite local biz in Houston:
My ultimate favorite restaurant in Houston is Izakaya Wa! Convenient location that serves up really outstanding Japanese food. They serve the comfort food my mother used to make, and they change their specials often. Chef and owner Akira has created a wonderful restaurant that serves up high quality and very tasty dishes.

Favorite local biz photo that you personally snapped:
Seared sashimi at the aforementioned Izakaya Wa

What's your favorite Yelp memory to date?
My favorite Yelp memory was the Yelp Houston's Holiday Hoedown at Winter Street Studios. I really enjoy open events, especially ones that are charity driven. It was amazing to see how many showed up to support SEARCH Homeless Services by donating blankets and sweaters. The venue was plenty big to handle the large turnout, a wonderful variety of food and drink vendors, and the entertainment kept everyone tapping their toes ensuring it was a successful evening.

People who love ___ should follow me on Yelp!
People who love burgers should read my Cheeseburger in Paradise list! My love of burgers started when I was very, very young; and I would ask my mother each night if we were going to have hamburgers for dinner (go ahead, ask her....she'll tell ya I did). This list is comprised of all the good, great, and spectacular burgers I've tried.

When you're not Yelping, you are...
Traveling! I love hitting the road, taking a train or being flown to some sort of fun destination. From small trips to Galveston to foreign destinations like my recent trip to Japan, my love of travel is shared through my reviews

Little Yelpers Club Field Trip

Posted by Angela S

Field Trip cover 2

Throughout the month of August, 300+ Little Yelpers and their families got out their permission slips, fastened their seat belts and set out to explore Chicago's North Shore... one kid-friendly place at a time for free. During Yelp's first-ever Little Yelpers Club Field Trip, guests gathered at Heller Nature Center in Highland Park for a Lorax-themed kick-off movie event and grabbed their Yelp compasses on the way out to help navigate their next destination. First stops included storytelling and music at Growth Spurts in Wilmette, then sandcastle play and music-making at Glencoe Beach. Next up Noggin Builders in Northbrook was the perfect spot for goo making and not-so-serious science experiments, then over to Language Stars in Bannockburn for ice cream and fun language activities. After a day of exploration at Kohl Children's Museum in Glenview (shhh... including a sneak peak of the upcoming building blocks exhibit), prince and princesses headed over to The Performer's School in Highwood and got un-Frozen with "Let It Go" performances, and learned what it takes to become famous with behind-the-scenes tumbling, singing, and hands-on choreography. From Broadway star to rock star, the trip wouldn't be complete without a visit to The Rock House in Wilmette for an afternoon of family karaoke. Whew! Check out photos from the Field Trip right here and a fun Glenoce Beach movie here.

Yelp Celebrates Local WNY Farmers At The Lodge

Posted by Alex L

This past Saturday, the community came together to celebrate our most beloved food producers at The Lodge --- a gorgeous two-story restaurant and bar. Chef Todd Lesakowski and his staff used ingredients provided by T-Meadow, Plato Dale, Dan Tower and Native Offerings Farm along with oyster mushrooms from Boston Valley Gourmet to concoct creative tasting dishes for almost 300 guests. The Mountain Run joined us for a killer set of bluegrass (which included a bluegrass cover of Radiohead’s High and Dry) as guests enjoyed and sipped samples of Lockhouse Distillery Vodka and Brooklyn Brewery beer. Read all the reviews of the event here and see all the fabulous photos on the Flickr page.

Bellevue Gets Brunched During Yelp's Road Trip

Posted by Katy

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 8.39.28 PM.jpg

Blssed with perfect weather for our Road Trip weekend, Yelpers from both Seattle and Portland packed into Eques for an equally perfect brunch event. Before they could even get through the door, Elite members were offered a choice of Mimosa or champagne as they waited outside for the event to star. Once inside, the drinks still poured! Tacked onto the liquid list was an endless supply Bloody Mary's courtesy of the do-it-yourself garnish bar. Also set up were various buffet-style sampling stations featuring blurberry stuffed French toast, Eggs Benedict, and more. But don't let us spoil for you! Want to see how it all went down? Check out what the Elite Squad had to say in their reviews of the event here.
