It seems that the summer has arrived to Madrid, and with it, more than fourty Yelpers met last Wednesday in Bar La Gloria, one of the finest establishments in Malasaña, that has just been opened a few months ago. Yelpers as Eugenio S were treated with a sample of "almost all the menu, which proofs how generous and attentive were the responsibles of this project, with the wonderful Sol heading it". The Bar La Gloria is actually meant to be one of the references in the neighbourhood, specially because -as Manuel G points out- the owner buys everything in local businesses, something that he considers so important that even suggests her to put it up in the blackboard, for everyone to know about it.

Collage3

Sergio S had the chance to have a bite (among others) of the tomato and tuna loin salad, beans and chickpeas hummus, croquettes and flamenquines (a typical Cordovan dish consisting on a veal fillet rolled up with cured ham coated with crumbs and deep fried). Rafael L loved this last one, and he explains that those come directly from Córdoba while he also makes a special mention of the carrot cake provided by Wicked Sweet.

Don't forget to leave your impressions on the event, take a look at the pictures and follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Do you want more? Take a look to see if you have what it takes to be an Elite!

Yelp Vancouver Unleash Their Alter-Egos

April 24th, 2013. An exceptionally clear and unstormy night. The Yelp Burst went out across the sky and Vancouver Elites near and far rose to the call, descending upon The Storm Crow Tavern in force as their alter-ego selves! From Pirate Ninjas to Sci Fi Superheroes, 85 costume clad Yelpers like Alicyn C let their "inner dork come out at The Storm Crow."

YelpVancouverEliteCollage1

From the Crow's own cucumber concoction to the tantalizing taps of Phillips Brew, guests wet their whistles with liquid libations aplenty. For Ben C, "Blue Buck beer and those awesome vodka drinks achieved critical mass for an outstanding Elite Party!" Not to be out done (and keeping people from being undone) attendees were treated to a wave of vegetarian appies off The Storm Crow's menu. "The chickpea fries with the spicy dip were amazing!" swoons newbie Elite Julie L.

YelpVancouverEliteCollage2

"It was great to see all of the old Yelpers again. Now mix that with great munchies, a violin playing DJ, and you got yourself a kick-ass geek party!!!" What's that Fritz S? A violin playing DJ?! It's true! Michael Fraser treated guests to sweet tunes and improvised live violin. Talk about multitasking!

YelpVancouverEliteCollage3

Pin Up Perfection Photography captured costumed glory at the cosplay photo booth and Kat S was "beyond thrilled. What a fabulous score!" And when Voracious V graced patrons with an impromptu sci-fi burlesque number Garth C made note - "Finishing off the night with a little surprise burlesque was just icing on the cake."

YelpVancouverEliteCollage5

A huge thank you to Martin and all of The Storm Crow staff for taking such good care of our superhuman Yelpers; to Jonny & Phillips Brewery for craft brew love; Michael Fraser and Voracious V for unforgettable entertainment; Stephanie from Dore Productions for roving photography, Aimee K - my moral support hailing from St. Louis; and to the Vancouver Elites who made this newly crowned CM Ninja feel right at home!

"The breeze fair aft, all sails on high, ten guns on each side mounted seen, she does not cut the sea but fly..." the Yeper Party brigantine! More than two hundred Yelpers gathered last Sunday on Moby Dick Club to celebrate one of the most interesting events this spring: Madrid first Yelper Party, the Love Boat!

Yelperparty4As Óscar Hmany Yelpers noticed "the huge amount of trunks, suitcases and various stuff to enjoy the summer" that became our sweet photocall, thanks to Marantikk. Speaking of which, it was as sweet as Sabores Ocultos cookies and BeSmoothie smoothies, two treats that Elena M and her guests enjoyed particularly. By his side Juan D will put some pressure on his workmates to buy Lise & Leti cookies for their upcoming birthdays. Anyway, he also loved the greek food by Jronia k Jronia!

Yelperparty6

Eugenio S was more inclined to the grape juice, so he let Crash Wines staff do all the talking. They explained their concept and the particularities of their wines. At the same time Rafael L tasted Adrede, one of the choices of Bodegabierta, while he also recommended the tapas featured by Los 3 CerditosJavi E came up with something really good from the event: he already has plans for the upcoming weeks! He will be visiting De Vinos for a tasting. But even though he really loves wine, he also enjoyed very much the cocktails provided by The Kraken Spiced Rum. One of the best assets of the party? Every passenger got home safe and sound thanks to MyTaxi!

Yelperparty7Do not forget to leave your impressions about the event here, take a look to the pictures and follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Do you want to be invited to events like this one? See if you have what it takes to be an Elite!

It's All Fun and Games at Yelp's "Game Day" at Lucky Strike in Orange

LET THE YELP GAMES BEGIN! Unlike the hunger version with Jennifer Lawrence, no Elites were harmed (or killed) during our event at Lucky Strike in Orange this past Tuesday.

Candids

Yelpers went crazy with their garbs and Tammy G "really loved the costume theme, and how many people participated." She was also happy that her "sixth grader's Dodgers jersey" fit perfectly for the occasion. Though her costume was amazing, she was "inspired by the human Rubik's cube, Monopoly Man, corn hole, the Mario and Packman gang, afro tennis player, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, war games, and Barry Bonds" threads that the guests donned for the evening. She affirms, the "human Twister deserved her prize, and my tickets" as she took home a pair of season passes to the 2013 Orange County Fair!

Costumes

There were a ton of activities for Yelpers of all ages including giant Jenga, corn hole, shuffleboard, billiards, live trivia, and of course… bowling! Though many "took pictures and bowled" Jonathan Z "spent most of the time at the pool table getting his butt handed to him by a fellow Yelper and playing trivia" where the grand prize was a $50 gift card to Lucky Strike!

Games

The generous hosts sampled new items off of their menu such as Belgian fries served with curry ketchup and chimichurri aioli, grilled chicken jerk skewers, classic blue cheese mini burgers and margherita pizzas. Howie C was a fan of the fries and claimed they were "to die for!" These "double fried, thick squared cut fries" came with a variety of dipping sauces, however his "favorite was the honey mustard." Though the sauce is "not on the menu" he assumes they'd be more than happy to "bring it out for you" if you asked nicely.

Food_collage

Of course, a night can't be complete without drinks. The venue sampled beers by Hangar 24 Brewery and cocktails like the Hangar 1 Blueberry Moscow Mule, Three Olives Cherry Mojito and 1800 Silver Margarita. Sukhraj B compliments the "bartenders who were and awesome and served some stiff drinks" and deemed the "cherry mojito and blueberry Moscow Mule as a hit!"

Cocktails

No prizes were awarded for the games, however nobody went home empty handed as the highly anticipated Elite socks made an appearance and into the hands of yearning guests. Julie L loved the gift that were not only "fluffy and very well made," but they are definitely her favorite piece of "swag to date!"

Thanks so much Lucky Strike! We all had a blast and your staff was amazing.

Welcome to the Elite Squad, South Bay Newbies!

Generally speaking, being the new kid on the block is not one's goal. Not only are you unsure of yourself, but being on the bottom of the totem pole can be the pits. But not in South Bay! Newbie Elites who had their badge for 6 months or less were treated to a welcome shindig at Asian Box in Mountain View. Gotta show these baby VIP's some of the perks of being on the Squad...

Asian Box Collage 1

Asian Box is a restaurant that bridges the gap between fast casual and your favorite neighborhood joint. A place where you can stop by anytime with friends or family for an incredible meal at an incredible price. All responsibly raised, farmed, and made. Created by FK Restaurants & Hospitality CEO Frank Klein, who is a veteran of the national restaurant scene. Frank loves Vietnamese food because he feels that freshly prepared it is the most flavorful cuisine with greatly diverse flavors. As CEO Frank insists, The Box is always using fresh and sustainably raised and grown products.

Executive Chef Grace Nguyen was raised in a traditional Vietnamese family where she began cooking with her grandmother at an early age. She brings authentic recipes and techniques coupled with a keen eye and palate for quality ingredients. Gracie worked with some of the finest chefs in the country and her recent work with Charles Phan at his world famous Slanted Door and Bush Street OTD restaurants in San Francisco brought her home to her cooking roots.

YEE Collage

A very intimate crew of Elites-only were welcomed into the restaurant and escorted to their very own dining table. Here, they ordered their own customm Vietnanmese box from the menu to pair with Asian Box's house made teas and coffee or glass of wine. "Kudos to Asian Box for the hella muscles food," cheered Marty H. He "had the shrimp with brown rice and tamarind sauce" and doesn't "even remember scarving it down. I just remember not having any left at the end. According to cheferoo, everything is gluten free and made-to-order." It's true, they are 100% gluten free!

Asian Box collage 2

Culinary Director Chad Newtown joined the party towards the end of the evening to explain his role with the restaurant, including their healthy, eco-friendly philosophy and to share that they're opening up a third location in San Francisco later this year. "It was really cool of the founder of Asian Box to introduce himself and give us some history about the restaurant," said Kevin N.

Newbie Philip W "Got Yelp Elite [status] 2 weeks ago and this event was proof that all that work was worth it! Amazing food, great people, and a really chill atmosphere. Asian Box's design is pretty cool, from the multitude of combos of food to the 100% landfill-diversion." He's "actually taking some friends to the Palo Alto branch tomorrow- that impressed!" Lois K and the crew loved the food and being treated so special, "But of course what really makes any event is the people. All the yelpers at the event were really friendly and easy to talk to, which made for a wonderful evening of lively conversation, yummy eats, and newfound Yelper friends!

It was about time for Yelp Elite Squad in Madrid to roll up their sleeves and prepare their own food! So Madrid Yelpers had the chance to take one of the quick cooking workshops at Apetit'Oh! where Luis and Jeny taught all the attendees in just one hour and a half some basic cooking techniques that helped later to prepare a whole menu.

Collage3Everyone collaborated and played the chef for some minutes, getting to cook grilled zucchini pie, pasta ribbons with saffron scallops, shitake with prawn and soya sprouts and mini hamburgers made of dill marinated salmon with mustard sauce. Later the Squad also could taste the fruits of their work, along with sips of Anae albariño wine and Monólogo Rioja wine.

Collage4Thanks to Luis and Jeny for their patientence teaching the Squad all the recipes and, specially... thanks to the Elite Squad for their hard work! Don't forget to leave your review of the event, take a look to the pictures taken by Ana López-Varela and follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Do you want to come to one of this parties? Don't forget to RSVP for our upcoming Yelper Party!

Until then... See You On Yelp!

Yelp Elite: Salute Your Sweets

Bracing the cold February air, Elites came out to Copper Cupcake for a fun filled night of all things sugary and sweet at Yelp Elite: Salute Your Sweets! There was plenty of hot cider, wine and treats from Copper Cupcake to kick off our sugar rushes: whoopie pies, oatmeal cranberry with coconut cookies, fudgy chocolate brownies, snickerdoodle cookies were just a few of the scrumptious eats – and best of all was their bourbon caramel sauce to drizze on all of it!

CollageSYS1

Yelp Elites split up into two camps to rotate through the Salute Your Sweets activities. Copper Cupcake's "Delciousness Maker" Shannon Loucks shared her secrets with us on the art of making vanilla buttercream frosting and after making our own, we decorated them to our hearts content. Kathy V marveled at using "real vanilla. I'd only ever seen it handled on Food Network!" Matt R's highlight was "seeing the underbelly of the bakery. Copper Cupcake is a tightly-run ship. They make a lot of seasonal items, depending on what's available locally. If you try to flavor with extracts, that will earn you a roundhouse punch to the face. And don't try putting shortening in that icing." It melts at a higher temp than butter and leaves that unfortunate sticky coating in your mouth, which is why Shannon uses the real deal instead!

CollageSYS2

Copper Cupcake's Joe Loucks schooled us on chocolate and foodie knowledge, leading a whirlwind game of trivia with interactive components too. Amanda J thought "questions were very interesting and he even had edible props like nibs," which are bits of raw cacaco beans that have been roasted. "It was a close game, but we came out on top. Woot woot!" Jessica L was psyched to get "some awesome Yelp undies to show for it!"

CollageSYS3

Thanks again to all the Elites who came out and had a blast with us at Yelp Elite: Salute Your Sweets. Also, thanks go out to Joe, Shannon and the wonderful staff at Copper Cupcake! This sugar rush isn't going away anytime soon thanks to you guys and we know where to find you to get our next fix...especially since everyone left with a suh-weet gift certificate for a cupcake. Check out the rest of the photos on our Flickr page and special thanks to Kate Hentrup for the lovely photography!

Juerga Animal @ Sargantana

All animals escaped from the fold, ran away from the farm and left the cages arriving in a non-stop race to the restaurant Sargantana, turned into a big jungle full of the most bizarre species of the natural world. Lizards, a “local” cow and its udders, zebras, tigers, snakes… even the Hootsuite bird, a fallero mussel and a dark bat, were waiting impatiently outside the monstrous charming venue, awaking the attention of every living being passing by on the street. What was being cooked inside the place made all creature instincts appear, as Gonzalo M said “a name and a Twitter nick was the only requirement to get through the doors and get all flashes on you from Fran’s camera, just as if you were in Hollywood itself”. The animal party was just ready to kick in Valencia!

  Collage3

It was clear that the fragrances from Juanra’s appetizers (Sargantana owner) made salivate to the last fly! Meanwhile, among skins and lianas, wild animal cavity stomachs were searching for reinvigorating liquids. Bodegas Vereda Real gifted the most curious palates with white, rosé and red amazing valencian “excellent” wines, as Samuel M could test, and made with fruits pulled out straight from our vineyards. We had the chance to learn from Jesús and Pedro’s knowledege all details in that process. Then Ana, from Los Bigudíes de Rubíes hairdresser shop, showed some of her products and offered a beauty service in its business as a prize to the winner of one of the night games! 5 stars in Yelp go to Paz Nm, who perfectly explained the games to all the guests with an enormous smile (the only thing not camouflaged in her dress). So, wines up cheep down, María P claimed that all Yelpers “met again and there were many, many new faces even testing the capacity of the place!

Collage4

But there still was a lot of way to trot during the night… Pan Creativo Artesano, with its owner Fernando, presented artisan lovely bread with amazing textures and mixtures such as squid ink, Pedro Ximénez flavour, spelt flour with linseeds and sunflower seed baguettes. We saw canines and tusks chewing with quite energy everywhere! Eventually, as a dessert Las Galletas de Marta, delicious and perfectly decorated with love and effort, lasted just a few minutes in most of the four-footed animal snouts. Don’t even mention that beasts are not sweet! Little by little, all those enjoyments started softening the evening while the musicians got ready to calm down the pride. Two wild cats (recently escaped) began the show miaowing for a while, and then Alameda choir tried, with their voices and piano, to make the herd enjoy the music of varied works. "It was a wise choice to make the singers appear among the guests!exclaimed María G

Collage6
All this savage madness didn’t stop for two hours, and we have to thank that to all our sponsors of the night: Sargantana, Pan Creativo Artesano, Bodegas Vereda Real, Los Bigudíes de Rubíes and Las Galletas de Marta. Also thank you to Alameda choir for the musical note, to Toni H for guarding the stable door with happiness and to María G for the wonderful design of the party’s poster, we’ll put it in a frame for the memory! And speaking about memories… we can’t say goodbye without thanking all the splendid work to the decorator and photographer of the night, Fran de Sousa. Don't miss his great pictures and Yelper’s reviews from the event!

Apparently, no animal seemed to escape without a big smile on its snout…

It's Vodka O'Clock @ Theory Vodka Lounge in Seattle

What's cooler than hosting an end of the year blowout bash in the ever-exclusive Theory Vodka Lounge? You guessed it - NOTHING! Decked out in their hippest holiday gear, Seattle's Elite Squad members piled into this ultra-hip bar as part of Seattle's biggest nightclub, The Social, and sampled a variety of lovely vodka-laced cocktails all night long

PicMonkey Collage1
PicMonkey Collage3
Representing a variety of premium flavored vodkas, Belvedere Vodka sponsored the event and combined with the creativity of the bar staff at Theory, guests were treated to three stunning samples of cocktails. And for when that pesky line got long no one was too shy to take a quick shot of Belvedere Intense! Other flavors offered throughout the night included: Lemon Tea, Pink Grapefruit, and Black Raspberry

PicMonkey Collage4
PicMonkey Collage5
With private booths, plenty of standing room, and dining areas surrounding the expansive vodka bar, guests could settle in comfortably to mix and mingle with fellow Yelp peeps. Holiday tunes helped to set the mood on this chilly night as each Elite yelper was gifted a brand spankin' new set of Yelp fingerless gloves. Among other treats were endless supplies of holiday candies, fun and funky 80's toys and treats, and best of all, delicious bites served straight from the kitchen of the bar. Samples of fresh food included: Meatballs with a cranberry relish, Salmon gravlox on toast with capers, pickled veggie canapes, sweet potato chips and some lovely seasoned popcorn.
PicMonkey Collage2
But with all of the candy, food and liquor, there needed to be some balance to the evening! Our friends at Neuro helped "light it up" by offering generous free samples of two of their most popular flavored beverages, Bliss and Passion. Both of these lovely lightly carbonated non-alcoholic options helped keep guests energized and hydrated throughout the event.PicMonkey Collage6PicMonkey Collage8Were you among the fortunate few to attend our end of the year Elite bash?

Around eighty Yelpers came last Sunday to El Mentidero Café, in order to enjoy what Fer A describes as "a great venue in an incredible environment, with a unique proposal in Barrio de Las Letras", and from Ana S highlights "not only the decor", but also "the food, abundant and tasty". She has only good words for the salmorejo, something that Teresa A also loved very much, along with "the hummus, the astonishing green gazpacho and the fresh cheese and fruits skewers". Collage 5

Sebas A has always been more inclined to sweetness, so he prefers to talk about "the roscón de Reyes and the frozen yogurt" he was treated with. The first one came from the hand of La Sorianita, and the second came thanks to YOY, and was incredibly successful: after tasting their frozen yogurt Ángela R could not think about anything else but to visit them.Collage 1

But it's impossible not to talk also about the cocktail prepared with "spicy rum, ginger beer and lime" courtesy of The Kraken Rum through Global Premium Brands, which is set to be a highlight next time Juan D meets his friends. The cocktail also caught the attention of experienced Yelpers such as Jose Antonio P, who found it "quite surprising, specially the slightly spicy taste at the end". He was also surprised by the pictures shown in El Mentidero Café, a magnicent work by Alfonso Trancón. Collage 3

As always, I want to thank Yelpers and Elites to come and share a couple of hours with us, as well as thanking Mak, Quique, Rania, Elena, Sergio and Alberto from El Mentidero, La Sorianita, Joseph from Global Premium Brands, Íñigo and Patricia from YOY, Alfonso, Ana and Mario for their hard work and support. Without them, this event probably will not have happened. Do not forget to leave your review in the event page and take a look to the picture set on Flickr.

Yelp's In-House and At Home @ The Silver Dollar

Louisville's Elite squad cozied up to comfort food and cocktails at their finest and celebrated our city during Yelp's In-House & At-Home @ The Silver Dollar. Yelpers new and old alike settled into this Bakersfield Sound inspired honky tonk, reimagined inside a historic firehouse in Louisville's Clifton neighborhood. As newly elited Amanda F put it,"I felt a real sense of camaraderie amongst longtime Yelpers since everyone was so friendly and welcoming."

Silver dollar1stcollage
How do you make Elites feel right at home? This is Kentucky...so bring on the bourbon and whiskey! Bartender Larry Rice lined up a mystery tasting flight for each of us and as we imbibed and described, he revealed these golden elixirs to be Jameson, Canadian Club and Old Weller. Which one was the bourbon and where did it come from? Lynn B knew it was Old Weller and her bourbon knowledge didn't stop there: she won the Yelp bourbon matching challenge too! Pairing up all ten bourbons with their home distilleries, she proved herself a bourbon connoisseur and won a gift set where the only challenge left is deciding whether to drink that Woodford Reserve neat or on the rocks...

2ndcollage
Everything from their savory arbol sauce (their version of Texas Pete) down to the ginger syrup in their cocktails and is made in-house and The Silver Dollar gave us the insider scoop with notes from Chef Jonathan Schwartz and a mixology demonstration from Bartender Susie Hoyt. We not only got to try the Guapo and their take on an Old Fasioned, but they also treated us to samples of menu favorites like chicken and waffles and chorizo corndogs with achiote mustard, yum! Raquelle Z's already envisioning "happily eating the empanadas which can be ordered in a vegetable or braised beef as her entire meal on a future visit."

3rdcollage
With such care put into their culinary creations, it's hard not to love Louisville and local restaurants like The Silver Dollar. And what do Louisvillians do when we wanna show off how cool our home city is? We put a fleur de lis on it! Who needs birds? Yelpers added Louisville's signature emblem to as many items as they could fit into their photo but Lynn, Terri, Claire and Jeremy won the contest with 14 in total!

4thcollage
Thanks again to Elites and guests for coming out to enjoy an awesome event and to Treavor Martin for the photography — check more photos on our Flickr page. Also, special thanks goes to everyone at The Silver Dollar who shared their expertise and kindness with all of us.

Until next time, SYOY!

Collok.jpg

"Everyone might have had a mad night", thought more than one Yelper after discovering all the unsuspected accessories during our first Elite event in Valencia. But nobody should be blushed or embarrassed about it! No one seemed to be worried at all, and every single brave Yelper enjoyed the time playing around curlers and brushes in a young and modern hairdresser shop located in the heart of Ruzafa neighborhood. Disorder was conspicuous not only by its light and splendid decoration, but also because of its purest vintage style. And that is how this pretty local hairdresser’s became, for two hours, the scene of all our Yelpers lunacies. Besides, if you were looking forward to 'disordering' your look, Rosa G strongly recommended stopping by, because "the two owners give you advise about your hair while you are enjoying a cup of coffee on the couch".

Collage4.jpg

As expected, there were many hairdryers around, as well as delicious snacks waiting on the tables. Yelpers were treated with splendorous tapas from a local and Mediterranean business, La Reina Restaurant, consisting on fantastic foie and salmon that just made everybody’s hair stand on end. To go with these delicacies, Bodegas Aranleón presented red and white wine, both of them full of personality and elaborated with the fruits of our land vineyards, just as Valencians like! Such colours and intensities were so "essential in order to complete the palette of flavours of the night", as Ana S stated.

Collageeng1.jpg

The girls from My Little Republic put the cherry on the top very carefully, preparing the nicest sweet corner ever, all in pink and sugar, and apparently brought from a fairy tale. They worked so hard that at the beginning, Yelpers as Manolo L felt quite sorry eating those precious “sickly sweet cupcakes". But trying new things is one of their hobbies, so they couldn’t resist filling their bodies with such a top-quality glucose… obviously to the rhythm of DJ’s Juanvi music.

Collageeng2.jpg

Many thanks again to all of the sponsors that helped us in the party: Disorder, La Reina Restaurant, Bodegas Aranleón and My Little Republic; Dj Juanvi, who made people dance and enjoy the music, the photographer Fran de Sousa for capturing the magic of the evening in pictures (which you can see here), Tito for being such a great assistant and Juanjo for guarding the main door with a smile. Do you want to know more? Check the reviews and write your own here.

Don’t let the party stop!

¡NOVEY!

So, why are the Madrilians called cats? There are thousands of theories about that, but nobody knows for sure. So it was mandatory that, as we had the fantastic space of Revoltosa, filled with vintage chairs, Duralex dinner services, draws of cats and with that name that sounds very much like zarzuela, we could not do anything else but to turn our Elite Squad into cats, making Revoltosa a cathole that Ana H defines as "a perfect place to have vermouth on the Sun on a Saturday or Sunday morning".

Foto 3But as great as Revoltosa's terrace is, humans do not photosynthesis. So Revoltosa and Olé Lola treated Yelpers with some delicacies such as the croquettes that ousted the ones that Joy F's grandmother prepares: "I'm sorry grandma, but they're beating you (by far)". And in order to refresh the ambiance, nothing better than a vermouth or a good Madrid Lager courtesy of Cervezas La Virgen that the very same Joy F stresses as a beer "made carefully and with lots of love (besides hop, barley and Madrid water) here, in our dearest Madrid. AT LAST!".

The sweet part of the event was featured by Lise & Leti Homemade Cookies, and Sebastián A declares that he had to hold himself: "I'm just going to say that I didn't eat more of those because I felt ashamed". Alfonso L also wants to speak about the music selection "some people may say it was somehow old fashioned, but it truly gave the event a different and more sohpisticated ambiance". By the way... we should start preparing the next one!

Foto 4Once more, huge thanks for our hosts and sponsors for making this time one of the greatests moments in the month or even the year: Revoltosa, Olé LolaCervezas La Virgen, Lise & Leti Homemade Cookies, Lois Casino DJ e Hijomía. Yelp's A Zoo: Seattle Yelpers Have A Wild Time!

Lions and tigers and bears, oh Yelp! For the first time in Seattle Yelp history, the month of May offered the entire Yelp community a chance to check out one of 4 animal-themed events. Hosted at the Fred Wildlife Refuge, it sure proved to be a wild month! With face painting, flavor tripping, massages, food, drinks and photo booths galore, even the DJ dressed as a zebra didn't seem so crazy with all of the madness going on. Safari

Forest Frogbox
And because Seattle is home to more Non Profits than almost any other city in the country, it made sense to pick a local cause and raise money for. Selected as the beneficiary for the events was local NPO, The World Is Fun. With free admission and free food, we simply asked that guests pay just $1 per adult drink. Thank goodness we did because over the course of the four events Seattle's Yelp community raised more than $3200!BannerJungle frogboxForest

Making each event a smashing success wouldn't have been possible without the help from our participating sponsors: Soul'd Out Events, Wing Central, Mberry, The Triple Door, Ninkasi Brewing, Captain Morgan Black, Crown Royal Black, St. Germain, Tanqueray, Fentiman'sTapena Wines, Freixenet, PopChips, Honest Tea, Wild Ginger, Koral Bar, Smirnoff, Ketel One, Kind Snacks, Psoup Productions, Frogbox, Emerald City Beer, Uber Seattle, Z Tejas, and the Fred Wildlife Refuge.

Even though the sky was threatening with a big storm right before the start, 85 Yelpers defeated their fear to the thunders and lightings and made it to El Site, willing to know more details about the promotion that, during this week, is going to rock Malasaña through fourteen awesome offers in fourteen incredible businesses.

Right after passing through security check, the Yelp Madrid Cabin Crew, properly dressed, welcomed all the attendees and warned them to fasten their seat belts in order to enjoy the night, as weather conditions… could certainly bring some rough air to the party!

1b
Anyway, soon enough the cabin crew was able to pull out the inflight catering, and Yelpers were treated with exceptional drinks. For starters, Larry's Gin, courtesy of The Gin Club, and following Sandels 3.5% beer by The Beer Club, two amenities that Ana H recognize as "very stylish and just incredibly awesome".

2bBut Yelpers do eat between drinks, and the passage could also enjoy an assortment of "delicious strawberries and grapes coated with chocolate" made by La Bombonera which, as Asunción V points, "paired perfectly with Larry's Gin". Likewise, Julian, our very own barquillero, contributed adding sweetness to the party through the traditional Madrid wafers, "a very Madrilian detail that was just added up to the always funny and amusing moments we share monthly", as says Claudio M

Just in case Yelpers hadn't enough, The Suitcase girls lent us some beautiful headdresses to fill our photocall with glamour, and Graceman was in charge of the inflight music, showing his great skills with the vinyls, while Hijomía put together a beautiful photo album that you can admire in our Flickr page. We are already looking for the next one! Please, do not forget reviewing the event on our Event Page and if you could not attend… please download your copy of the Yelp Passport to Malasaña!

Whodathunk that on a Sunday evening more than 90 yelpers would set aside time to come out and join forces for a party? But it's no tough task if it's a Yelp event! Gathering together at Volta Cafe, these fine folks attended "Yelp's Bonkers for Burlesque" Elite Event, which as the name indicates, was all about burlesque. As Fer A highlights, "its cabaret-like decor with red-lit tones reminds me of Moulin Rouge!" In keeping with the fun theme the DisTinto winery provided a variety of Spanish red and white wines to satiate the thirsty guests.

Cerdos ibericos

Of the many awesome elements throughout the night, the first came in the shape of cured ham by Los 3 Cerditos Ibéricos. With an additional assortment of Iberian products from the delicatessen like canapes and flavored breads, the event was off to a tasty start! Yelpers were encouraged to select a type of bread, season it with a variety of available toppings like olive oil, avocado, salmorejo, sweet pepper marmalade or even mashed tomato only to fill it with delicious chunks of ham. Sebastián A was in awe, "There is nothing like Iberian ham to to remind you of just how much labor goes into the most delicious foods." Yelpers were also treated with cuttlefish and tuna pie from El Rincón de la Empanada Gallega. "It was so good it flew off the plates" admits Ana S. And if it couldn't get any better, the pie came paired with a seaweed tea that the business owners make in house.

Gente productos

Believe it or not, that's not all! Our incredible DJ, Talbot, gave the event a more Burlesque and cabaret vibe with a music selection that Ángela R just loved: "she was just perfect". But the spectacular finale was a performance of an more modern version of 'Romeo and Julliet' that Mariona Tena and Miki Esparbé performed exclusively to all the surprised yelpers.

Empar food y local
Don't forget to comment on the event page, and to check out Hijomía's pictures on our Flickr page. And as always, we want to thank all of the people worked so hard to make this event happen: Alejandro and Stamos from Volta Café, Laura and Raquel from Los 3 Cerditos Ibéricos, Julio and Mirta from DisTinto, Lydia and Marcos from El Rincón de la Empanada Gallega, Mariona and Miki, Ginebra Talbot and Hijomía. See you at the next event!

Elites Honored At The Inaugural Yelpy Awards In New Orleans

Hooray for Yelpywood! This past Saturday night, New Orleans Elites walked the red carpet into the Crescent Ballroom at the Westin Canal Place to gather for the highly anticipated Inaugural Yelpy Awards.

  Yelpycollage2
The swank-alicious room afforded stunning views of the city, but it was the Elite squad who were the real stunners this evening, as they graced the ballroom in their red carpet finest. Complimentary cocktails from Deep Eddy Vodka and beer from Saint Arnold Brewery were a huge hit as were the shrimp and grits, bacon-wrapped scallops, pork belly/watermelon skewers and mini muffaletta sandwiches, among other delish apps available to us, compliments of the Westin Canal Place.

YelpyAwardscollage1

Then... the moment everyone had been waiting for as Elites were honored at the awards ceremony.  And the winners are: Funniest: Scott S; Most Useful: Marielle S; Coolest: Andrea B; Biggest Foodie: Susan W; Best Compliments: Suzanne JC; Rookie of the Year: Jeff C; Lifetime Achievement: René D; Life of the Party: Joshua B; Most Helpful/Ultimate Ambassador: John LH; MVE (Most Valuable Elite): Jen L.

Extraordinary soiree for That's Vapore, a brand new restaurant in the center of Milan! It opened on December 2012 and hosted the community of Yelp Milano for its first dinner opening. Yelpers were cheered by Prosecco flutes and fingerfood in the restaurant foyer, a glass-walled open space not far from Duomo and Montenapoleone, and the first game started! The best photo of the party posted on Instagram and/or Twitter with hashtags #yelpmilano and #thatsvapore was that of Marta B, who won two tickets for the 8-hours concert MI Ami Ancora on Feb. 4th. In the meantime, everyone could chat with Filippo Cadeo, owner of the restaurant, who delighted us with steam based recipes from starter to desserts.

Jan2012D

At 9 pm the party moved upstairs, on the great wood-and-crystal balcony, where everyone could taste all the best of That's Vapore cuisine, served in lovely mini-baskets, and take part in the second, exciting game: a whole wall was covered with a blackboard paint and, chalks in hands, all the people wrote, drawed and designed freely. Our host Filippo chose Marco S as the best! Special star of the party, Paolo G, who got the title of King of Lists, together with a wonderful Yelp T-Shirt. Want to know something more? Yelp Seattle's Eastside Elite Dinner @ Your Local Market!

Check out these lucky-loos! A select group of super stoked Seattle yelpers recently received their shiny new 2012 Elite Badges and well, you know what that means... It was time to hit up Yelp Seattle's first Elite Event of the 2012!

Picnik collage 1

Kickin' it things off on the Eastside this January, Bellevue yelpers' bellies were stuffed with only the freshest and most fabulous food cooked right on-site at Your Local Market

Picnik collage 2

We know what you're thinking... An event at a supermarket? But wait! This is far from your average event. And even farther from your average super market or big chain store. In fact, the fine folks at Your Local Market host monthly charitable events, wine tastings and more. Think of a place where dancing in the aisles isn't just allowed, it's encouraged! And that's exactly what we did.

Picnik collage 3

As guests arrived they were greeted with the store's founders and key department managers, allowing for a fun face-to-face event.

Before taking a personal tour of the market and sampling a variety of locally made sausages, fresh-squeezed orange and grapefruit juices, and even locally made chocolates, each and every guest was treated to a complete 4 course dinner. Good thing we told 'em to come hungry!

With each course paired with a wine, Elite members enjoyed Beecher's famous gougeres, marinated olives and crab cakes with field greens. And we haven't even gotten to the main course yet! Big platters of housemade Coq Au Vin with buttered noodles and green Beans Amandine were prepared for everyone as well. Some servings were so big that most folks took home to-go boxes!

Picnik collage 4

Before their boxes were packed tight with awesome food there was yet another course of wine paired with enormous platters of dried fruits, nuts and artisan cheeses and crackers

But what's an event without a platter of gorgeous scratch-baked French macrons in a rich chocolate flavor and a passion fruit flavor?!

The first Madrid Elite Event of 2012 has finally happened and what a success it was! In celebration of a New Year, we thought we'd put a little twist on things by celebrating a hot new business. The focus for this new event was coffee and bicycles. Calling it "Take Away Night: Coffee & Bikes", we wanted to focus exactly what Santiago and Patricia, Toma Café owners, promote in their business. Together with their baristas Miguel and Ana, yelpers were treated to huge amounts of coffee and theine, to pair with a delectable brownie worthy of licking your lips!

Learning lots about coffee and it's production, it's safe to say that most every yelper who attended the festivities woke up the following morning to the smell of a special blend of recently milled coffee that Santiago and Patricia treated each guest with. Many of us did learn also other things that we had no clue about: for instance, when coffee is well-made and milk is properly vaporized, you do not need to add sugar to the mix, because the milk is sweet enough. Who knew?!

Food spon

Adding a little extra sweetness in the form of cupcakes (and even a mini variety!) Cupcake Madrid was on hand to serve up some delicious baked goods. Prepped in Toma Café, each were matched to the event theme and were decorated with little coffee/tea mugs. And in Ciclos Noviciado, the second stop in our event, the cupcakes were decorated with bicycles on them! Getting refreshed was easy too. Drinks mixed up with three different flavors of vodka: strawberry, blackberry and caramel were there to whet everyone's palates

Ciclos

Topping it off, one of the evenings most memorable moments was in Ciclos Noviciado where Andrés stood up and gave a TED Talk to guests broken into small groups. In the original place were Ciclos Noviciado began: a small attic on the top of the building that today is still used as the workshop were Andrés and his partners make, extremely carefully, lovingly and patiently custom-made bikes, making from Madrid a little bit more bike-friendly city.

Don't forget to comment on the event page! And if you want to take a look to more pictures, you can do so in our Flickr page.

It's Mathletes vs. Athletes in Denver Yelp-land!

Denver yelpers enjoyed a sporting good time on Wednesday night at Highland Tap & Burger, where folks gathered for a night of geeky goodness and athletic fun at the Mathletes vs. Athletes Elite Event! Yelpers chose which side of the equation to represent and came garbed in gloriously geeky or athletic attire to show their team spirit. And while enjoying these brainy and brawny pursuits guests were kept well sated by Highland Tap with cocktails, beer, wine, and small bites galore!

Blog1

There were various challenges to test athletic prowess such as rounds of basketball, ring toss, sholf and even a station provided by BOARDLife where yelpers had to put together a part of a skateboard. Not to be outdone, Kelly T came up with 10 of the hardest trivia questions we could have been asked to test the thinking (wo)man's abilities. At the end of the night winners were declared in several categories - best costume, most athletic, brainiest, and best all around competitor. Our winners walked away with some great prized included gift certificates for local restaurants and stores and rousing games such as Banagrams.

Blog2

Make sure to check out the reviews of the night and browse the fun photos captured by Autumn Cutaia Photography. Until next time yelpers, stay warm out there, Happy Holidays and we'll SYOY (See You On Yelp)!

Yelp Helps Cause Giving Matters In Nashville

Nashville yelpers kicked off the giving season with speakeasy style during Yelp Helps on Friday, November 18th with Yelp Nashville and presenting sponsor GivingMatters.com. The inaugural Yelp Helps party centered around philanthropy and was hosted during the grand opening week of spectacular new event venue Marathon Music Works. Over 14,000 square feet was dedicated to giving 15 area non-profits an opportunity to educate the local community on their missions and with ways that yelpers can give back through donations and volunteerism.

Participating nonprofit organizations included: Autism Society of Middle Tennessee, Belcourt Theatre, Brown Dog Foundation, Community Food Advocates, Land Trust for Tennessee, Musicians On Call, Nashville CARES, Nashville in Harmony, Nashville Humane Association, Nashville Symphony, Nurses for Newborns, Safe Haven Family Shelter, Southern Word, Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, and Urban League of Middle Tennessee.

Nearly 500 curious attendees mingled while visiting the interactive nonprofit organization's booths to sign up for email newsletters, donate funds, or to sign up to volunteer for various projects. In exchange for their good deeds, they were awarded chips to play in the gaming area that taunted with Blackjack, Craps, and Roulette tables. It's so good to be bad, right? Many attendees were in awe of the newly unveiled space that Music City Tents glammed up with beautiful decor and lounge areas while the distinctively moody ambiance was provided by Nashville Event Lighting. To keep the party going DJ Mindub spun hits throughout the night while Top Chef Arnold Myint kept the crowd on their toes as the charismatic emcee for the evening.

As Nickie G noticed, "Arnold Myint is one festive dude" but his genorosity didn't stop with the shananigans on the mic. The entire menu of scrumptious edibles were provided by his array of fabulous dining establishments that included Cha Chah, Suzy Wong's House of Yum, AM@FM, and PM. This crowd did not leave hungry especially when Myint's decadent brownies were served by the extraordinary Strolling Tables of Nashville. Guests were literally speechless over the glamorous costumed models strolling through the party as they served up treats.

Community partners Lipman Brothers brought lively libations that included a tasty assortment of Simply Naked Wines that had yelper Paul K gushing "I had some really good vino!" Meanwhile, hometown brewer (and Yelp BFF) Yazoo didn't disappoint with their big, rich, smoky malt bomb of a beer, Sue that was served in our very own souvenir glasses. Liquid courage certainly helped make some magical moments at the photobooth provided by music discovery site and bi-monthly publication Brite Revolution. Take a peek at all of the evidence here!

As an additional way to raise funds, Chirp Screenprinting produced Yelp Helps cause Giving Matters tees for $20 at the live screen-printing station with half of the proceeds going back to the nonprofit groups. After announcing the People's Choice Nonprofit and the High Roller Yelper winners and awarding them with some snazzy plaques, we also threw in some spoken word poetry performers, a visit from the dancing Frist Mummy, and a interactive scavenger hunt so full of mischief that a bright red women's bra was flung on stage. Seattle Elites Get Their P-Party On @ Japonessa!

You can't spell the word party without the letter P. So why not host an event to celebrate this all important letter! Encouraged to come dressed as anything beginning with a P, Seattle's Elite yelpers turned up for one heckuva popular event! Peeling through the crowd, it was easy to spot anything from pimps, to pirates, to penguins, pilots, and even a pastrami sandwich!

Picnik collage1

Known as Seattle's most happenin' happy-hour hangout, sushi spot Japonessa hosted this jam-packed party for 200 lucky local Elite yelpers. The menu for the night featured some of the tastiest treats in town. While sampling the food guests could nab a seat and treat themselves to a mini origami lesson while they ate.

Picnik collage2

Speaking of eating, guests got their share of fresh nigiri from platters piled high with salmon, tuna, yellowtail and albacore. And for the folks that love a little fusion flair, The Super Bad Boy roll proved to be super good. Also passed around were samples of the always popular El Diablo Roll, Calamari Japonessa, Garlic Short Ribs, and specially made rolls like The Elite Roll and The Yelper Roll

Picnik collage4

But what's a party without some sparkeling wine? Segura Viudas brought along cases upon cases of Cava to host their own tasting table complete with a prize wheel. But that's not all! Shiny gold keys were stratigically placed around the venue. Each key represented a fun prize and encouraged guests to venture out, meet new people and see the space all while trying to win big! More prizes for the night included mini gift bags to guests who dressed to impress, and even a complimentary dinner for two to the guest who wore it best. For guests who sidled up to the sushi bar, a specialty Segura Viudas cava cocktail was whipped up to wash it down.

Picnik collage3

A night as memorable as this would be hard to forget, but thanks to local photographer Chad Pryor we can keep the memory fresh with his gorgeous photos! For copies of prints from the evening please visit Chad's website. More photos of the event can be seen on our Official Yelp Flickr Page.

Yelpers didn't need to lift paving stones to find the sand on Tuesday because it was right under their feet. 65 yelpers came out to sandy spot, La Playa de Lavapiés to prove that Madrid's got a beach of its very own! Each yelper received a complimentary moustache in honor of Movember, a month-long challenge held each November to educate the masses and help the fight against prostate cancer. With moustaches on and willing to take their shoes off, yelpers could enjoy the French-Mexican food served by La Playa de Lavapiés.

5

In order to freshen things up, La Fisna winery offered guests their specialty fine wines. A wonderful borgoña to match the French-y ambiance, a very rare Galician red wine, and an absolutely delicious limited edition of white wine of which, only around one thousand bottles of it are manufactured every year. And for those who preferred beer over wine, they could taste the wonderful Alhambra again.

2

But people didn't stop moving their moustache there. The very French and fabulous La Crêp brought us a crêpe and galette tasting station from the very same Brittany. Yelpers agreed that the white chocolate variety was one as the very best crêpes ever created!

6

As always, Hijomía helped to document the terrific night by taking pictures while Mario stayed at the front door helping manage the guest list and name tags. Other handy helpers and folks to thank include, Guillaume, Stefan, Conchi, Rocío, Delia and Basma for all of their hard work. And thanks to every guest that came out last night to help make this party such a great success. Don't forget to comment on the event (if you haven't done so already) or take a look at the event pictures in our Yelp Flickr set!

Yesterday night over 120 Lyonnais yelpers came out to celebrate the rentrée and the first Yelp elite party in Lyon at the very chic Fripesketchup shop (for non French speaking, a pun on "Frites ketchup", fries and ketchup, fripes meaning vintage clothes !). No French fries tonight though, but ketchup... served in the form of custom-made “Yelpy Ketchupy Bloody Mary” cocktails, along with Bubble Tea, finger foods and lots of conversation. “Trendy but totally unintimidating, the location was super impressive,” enthused Alexandra D, who like the other guests got a personalized tour of the chic vintage boutique by the father-daughter owners of the shop, Olivier and Pauline.

The party got off to a quick start with the guests exploring the multitude of drinks and nibbles served downstairs. On the menu: Bubble Teas prepared on site in six different flavors by Bubble Fever, cool Wodka Wyborowa cocktails prepared by Marc, the dandy bartender from one of the best cocktail bars in the city, L'Antiquaire, and mini-burgers from De Bons Plats Chez Vous. “What an awesome evening,” raved Monique V, who went crazy for the “great setting, BUBBLE TEA (yes, this should be in capital letters) and wonderful people all around. I can't wait for the next one”

As the party spilled out onto the street, guests marveled over their favorite vintage finds and Bubble Tea flavors and even spotted a reality-TV star among the crowd!  As Philippe H puts it "a great party that allowed me to reconnect with familiar faces and witness the Lyon Yelp community grow before my eyes."

Yelp's Adrenaline Adventures Take Seattle By Storm!

With over 1,100 expected guests, there was no cooler place to be this past Saturday night than the Seattle Design Center. This spacious venue hosted Seattle's biggest Yelp event to date! With live bands, a mechanical bull, a DJ, aerial acts, stiltwalkers, and more, it was certainly an event to remember. In fact, with a total of 4 photobooths, it'd be hard to forget! Best of all, all money raised at the event through donations and dollar beers went to Seattle's rockinest NPO, The World Is Fun. With over $2000 raised, it was certainly a party to be proud of.

Designed to connect local yelpers to fun adrenaline-inducing activities around town, there was no shortage of fun to be had. Alki Kayak Tours and Mountain To Sound Outfitters brought out a paddleboard to teach dry-land lessons. Folks who tested the equipment were offered passes and coupons to check out the real deal at a later date. iFLY Seattle talked up indoor skydiving techniques while Sky High Sports played games on mini-trampolines. And if that's not enough, Market Ghost Tours spooked Seattleites while The Cabiri danced and twirled above our heads! Not limited to just aerial performances, they also provided a stiltwalker to walk among the crowds of people in line for tricks and treats.

Waiting for a free caricature drawing from Over The Line Productions was totally worth it as guests were treated to a special portait of themselves at the party to take home as a souvenir. Adventure seekers sought even more opportunities from Evergreen Escapes and Z-Ultimate Self Defense Studios. And Games2U provided a 4D theater and gaming experience for folks waiting in line to get in. But that's not all! They also provided a 12ft monitor on which guests could play XBoX Kinnect, as well as a giant man-powered robot who rolled around the event greeting gaggles of guests. The ever clever ClownsUnlimited practically stole the show with a massive mechanical bull, a photobooth, unlimitedsoft-serve ice cream and ping pong tables to play with.

Picnik collage5
Picnik collage6

As we mentioned, there were a total of 4 opportunities to get your photo snapped. Qdoba not only served up guac at a do-it-yourself guac bar, they took some super silly pics of guests with props like mustaches, sombreros, and maracas. Props weren't limited to the Qdoba booth, though. David Wentworth and Heathoriginal hosted a fabulous and fun booth with props of their own. Goofy glasses, big bow-ties and manly mustaches made for some of the parties prettiest pics! But what's that? You didn't get a snapsot of the Panda?! Courtesy of Soul'd Out Events, DJ Marty McIntyre dawned a badass bear suit while spinning records and taking photos with friends and fans.

Picnik collage17

If you managed to make it to the Atrium you couldn't escape the rockin' rhythms of Irukandji Physics of Fusion! Sharing the stage, the band took a break to allow for Seattle's funny and fabulous Jet City Improv troupe from Wing It Productions.

Picnik collage9
Picnik collage10

Our favorite eco-friendly friends at Frogbox provided some wacky entertainment as well. Fans of iPhone app, Angry Birds got to play a real live game and knock birds off boxes! And our non-profit buds TWIF hosted a cardboard tube competition. Battling it out, guests were able to (card)board fight with one another for a chance to win TWIF buttons and stickers.

Picnik collage12
Picnik collage13

But what's a party without food? A special thanks to the folks from: The Triple Door, On Safari Foods, Pampeana Empanadas, Jodee's Desserts, Lynnae's Gourmet Pickles, Intrigue Chocolates, Qdoba, Zing Bars, Kind Snacks, PoPchips, Molly's Salads & Sandwiches, and La Isla Puerto Rican Cuisine. Bellies were a burstin' after this shindig!

Picnik collage14

Washing it down free non-alcohilic options included: FIJI Water, DRY Soda, Honest Tea, and Zevia. And for just a $1 donation to The World Is Fun, guests were treated to Ninkasi Beer, Emerald City Beer, brews from Odin Brewing, Sky River Mead, Crispin Cider, and even 509 Wines!

A special thanks to Nityia Design for photographing the event, Soul'd Out Events, DJ panda Marty McIntyre, Games2U, and Clowns Unlimited.

More photos can be found on Nityia's Facebook page as well as here on the Soul'd Out Events Yelp album. Did you get a panda pic?!

Seattle Yelp's Got Talent!

Talent oozes through the pores of the Seattle Yelp community. So what better way to feature our fabulous friends than by hosting a talent show? There was just one question on everyone's mind last Friday as more than 250 friendly faces packed the floor at E|M Fine Art Gallery in South Lake Union.                                             "Who arted?"

Picnik collage1

The gorgeous multi-level gallery helped to curate a special Yelp art show/talent event while showing off some of their spectacular pieces of their own. Kick ass contributors included:

Collage2

Erik M - photography
Vanessa J - photography
Adam C
- photography
Kate S - painting
Samantha G - painting
Glory H - painting
Will L - painting
Vicki L - sketches
Dave A - sketches
Jennifer S - quilting
Brendan M - pottery
Lori F - beaded jewelry
Jocelyn B - baked goods

But what's a party without food and bevvies? Our friends from Razzi's Pizzeria sure know how to spoil a hungry crowd. Serving up poping hot vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and meaty pizzas, there wasn't an empty stomach in the house! Keepin' it sweet, Wheatless in Seattle came to the rescue with tasty treats too.

Picnik collage3

With Dottie's Lager provided by Emerald City Beer and wine from Chateau St. Michelle, who could've asked for more? And yet that's still not all...

Live performances from our very own Yelp Elite members wowed the crowed and kept the party hoppin' late into the night. Between bodacious burlesque performances, salsa and tango routines, and lots and lots of musical talent, you've gotta wonder why we haven't seen our Yelp Elite members winning America's Got Talent yet!

Picnik collage4

Did you recognize your talented friends?

Will L & his band - Live music
Kelly D - cranking out Madonna tunes!
Kiki M "Chesty LaRue" - Burlesque
Marissa S - "Solange Corbeau" - Burlesque
Chris M - Keyboards/singing
Erika C - Salsa/Tango performance

Picnik collage5

And for those who left their art at home, Yelp provided a 10ft canvas for guests to paint on live at the event.

Picnik collage6

Thanks again to Vanessa J for her photog skills.

Denver Yelp's Indoor Picnic

Last night 100 Denver yelpers and their guests got cozy at Backcountry Provisions for a fun-filled indoor picnic! The gracious host venue supplied lucky folks with many a delicious sandwich including a "day after Thanksgiving sandwich" with turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce that made Sherri S fall in love with an inanimate object. Also on hand for nomming were multiple salads, brownies, and cookies.

Picnic

No picnic is complete without liquid refreshments so red sangria and Dale's Pale Ale were on hand to quench everyone's thirst. The one thirst that was unstoppable though was one for victory! Hasbro generously donated dozens of games from Trivial Pursuit to a Game of Things, Pictionary to Taboo, and many more for yelpers to enjoy during the evening. While everyone walked away with a Trivial Pursuit Slam deck, 3 lucky winners took home a copy of each game available at the event.

Picnic2

All the fun and games were captured by the wonderful Phil H and you can see the photos here. And while you're at it peruse the reviews and Talk thread to see all the happenings from last night. Thanks to all you yelpers that are playas for such a fun-filled time!

Until next time, SYOY (See You On Yelp)!

Austin Yelp Elites Go Gaga for GaGa!

Austin elites busted out of their straight laced world into a full dose of Lady GaGa inspired madness this Tuesday. We rampaged Oilcan Harry's with more glitter and more gutz than any Yelp party to date. And that's sayin' something! Patent leather, thigh high boots, wild hair styles, wigs galore and a frenetic and fabulous energy were the harbingers of one of our best Yelp events ever. Put aptly by Ryan S: "Some of y'all got more balls than Gaga for the outfits you wore.  Dayum!"

Gaga4

Three Olives Vodka brought their A-Game (and their Poker Face) with Cherry, DUDE and naked vodka flavors, O Face T shirts for the first 30 yelpers and three gorgeous girls carrying around Code Red shots. We mixed it up with zero cal Honest Tea's Honest Ade for some fabulous fruity summer concoctions. Meanwhile, a tall spartan circulated amongst the crowd with speared bites of Spartan Pizza and two gorgeous men dished up three different kinds of Sushi Zushi. Of course, who can eat when you're getting made up by Baldo Face Painting? Body art FTW!

Gaga3

And that's not all folks. Some of our fave yelpers had never seen a drag show (gasp!) so they were especially wowed by the absolutely lovely ladies of La Cage and our charismatic super MC Rob Faubion. This is the closest Monica O has "been to a perfect, expertly constructed cabaret queen goddess and Steve Martin's double." Fab photos of the crew were taken, and tweeted, by Ben & Bianca from Carlos Pena Photography. We'll have final figures on what we raised for the Capital City Mens Chorus but huge thanks to Austin All Maids, the Yay or Nay Sip & Splash boat party, Zach Scott Theater & NeuSkin for the prizes.

Gaga5

Don't believe we could squeeze all of this into two hours? Well see for yourself! Check the reviews on the party listing and take a mo to ogle the amazing photos. Oh, and the aftermath. Equally legendary. From Yolanda G: I'm pretty sure that I'll be sleeping with glitter and finding random feathers for the next week in my room. That's ok, because I still want to do it all over again!"

Until our next soiree, SYOY!

Seattle's Speakeasy Elite Event @ ACT Theatre

Shhhhh! Don't tell anyone but Seattle's Yelp Elite squad enjoyed their first speakeasy themed event!

Picnik collage1

Rocking the roaring 20's look, droves of Seatown's finest gathered together at the historic Eagles Auditorium Building in downtown Seattle. Now home to ACT- A Contemporary Theatre, much of the building has remained preserved since the mid 20's when it was a super secret, super enormous gentlemen's club.

Picnik collage2

In keping with the secretive history of ACT's famous Bullitt Cabaret guests came dressed to the nines with feather boas, flapper dresses, ties and hats! And whether they preferred to simply sit back to enjoy prohibition-style cocktails courtesy of Bulleit Bourbon, or grab a plate of the Daily Grill's many marvelous bites, there was lots to do in the Bullitt Cabaret! Sweet and savory snacks included; fresh steak fajitas, chips and salsa, mini seared ahi tuna steaks, chicken skewers, endive skewers, brownies, starberry tarts, key lime pies, and more.

  Picnik collage3

Where food and drink normally reign king of the party, this event was all about entertainment. With a live Twitter feed displayed on a 12' x 9' screen, our secret was out! Local dance troupe The Harlequin Hipsters showed off their many moves while guests gambled the night away. What's better than real casino quality equipment? That's right, nothing! The fabulous folks from A Casino Event of Seattle brought out only the best for our guests; Blackjack tables, Craps, Roulette, and Spanish 21, and more! Each guest was awarded with $500 (fake) dollars and the high rollers of the night walked away with gift cards, bottles of Bulleit bourbon, and free tickets to catch Vanities playing at ACT right after the event.

Picnik collage4

For more info about ACT or the awesome Yelp Elite deal for the ACTPass, email seattle@yelp.com. All Elite members are offered a discount on Seattle's best theatre deal, the ACTPass.

Come Under the Big Top with Yelp Columbus!

Come one, come all! Yelp Columbus Elites and their guests were treated to a night of carnival craziness that included eight amazing sponsors at one visionary venue for Under the Big Top with Yelp at Wild Goose Creative, which is an organization and creative space that supports, encourages, and promotes all forms of art and artists in Columbus.

Under the Big Top collage 2

From caricature portraits by Steve Campbell, to dip-your-own (local!) caramel apples from Local Matters and Chef Laura, this elite party delivered all sorts of artsy amusement. "It had all the dressings of my favorite kind of event," relishes Matthew B.

Under the Big Top Collage 1

Vegan treats were dished out by Pattycake Bakery and Rad Dog! served their famous meatless hot dogs. Miffed, but delighted, Meredith R thought "those tofurkey dealies really tasted a lot like hot dogs!" She continues, "What really blew me away though, was that chocolate chip cookie I got from Pattycake. That amazing circle of chocolaty goodness was so moist and chewy that when I opened it up, pieces just fell right off into my hands."

Under the Big Top Collage 3

Meanwhile, Genre Creative kept yelpers smiling at the digital photobooth (available for rental!) and Alison from Fuse Factory  lit up the room with LED balloons. If you got your photo taken at the Genre Creative photobooth with – or without – a LED balloon, go to genrecreative.com, find client login under photography and enter the word Yelp to download or order prints.

Finally, what carnival would be complete without popcorn and slushies! Gratefully, Pam's Popcorn came through with individualized bags of her iconic Columbus Mix and Margarita Man kept the good times rollin' (perfect for summer fests) with cups of free-flowing margaritas and rum punch. Jimmy Buffet would be jealous.

Under the big top collage 4
Don't forget to read reviews from your fellow yelpers (or if you attended, go ahead and write your own.) Many thanks to our own Angie P from Skye Public Relations who took some amazing photos! (Yelp Elites are always so multi-talented.) Check out all the shots from the event on Flickr!

Seattle's Passport to Ballard Launch Party!

Passports are always a good thing to have and while the Passport to Ballard doesn't include an RFID tracking chip and it can't get you access across the Canadian border, it can save you money! Valid for an entire week, the Passport to Ballard is a printable discount booklet offering deals at 15 of Ballard's best businesses! To kick things off right, Seattle's Yelp Elite Squad joined forces at the Shilshole Bay Beach Club and partied their Ballardian butts off!

Picnik collage

With the widest variety of sliders known this side of the Sound, Apulent Catering served up a storm of baby burgers. There were lamb and rosemary sliders with feta cheese and yogurt sauce, New York Strip sliders with caramelized onions, Oregon Bay shrimp sliders with celery root salad, fried leeks and marinated grilled beet sliders! If that's not enough, Apulent also provided spring rolls just in time for Spring-like weather!

Picnik collage2

In addition to slider-fest, guests were also warmly welcomed by Ballard businesses; Laura Bee Designs, Twiggypop Ranch, Savour Speciality Foods, Habitude, and more! Many offering raffles and delectible discounts to our lucky attendees. Even luckier were the guests who got free massages from Elements Therapeutic Massage!

Picnik collage3

Killer calamari and fab fries were served up hot thanks to Ballard Brother's Seafood and it was like a vacay to Puerto Rico with spicy chips n' salsa from La Isla. And what's a party without cocktails n booze?! Yelpers were treated to wines of the red and white variety as well as Ninkasi's awesome IPA, Total Domination. Cocktails were also being downed by the dozen thanks to Jose Cuervo Tradicional.

Picnik collage4

Rounding out the evening the only thing that could make a party better would be live music and dessert. And we had both! Just in time for Madri Gras our friends at Le Bon Ton Roule spoiled guests with never ending servings of praline bread pudding while D'Ambrosio Gelato had the longest line of the night!

Picnik collage5

If you'd like to read or write a review about the event, click here! If you still don't have your passport to Ballard, it's valid through Feb 26th,2011.

Seattle's Yelp Helps Open Event!

Picnik collage Amid the the rumors that Seattle lacks heart, we've got proof otherwise! More than 800 local yelpers trudged through the first storm of the season and made it down to fabulous Fremont Studios to learn about over 30 local non-profits. The theme of the event? Volunteerism! With over 1200 RSVPs this event was Seattle's largest Yelp event to date. Best of all, guests left with handouts, coupons, schwag bags, full bellies, wet whistles and volunteer opportunities galore!

   Picnik collage2
Picnik collage3

Over 30 local non-profits participated in the event by hosting raffles, art auctions, live performances, wine bottle ring toss, bean bag toss, beer pong, Connect Four and much, much more! While guests mixed and mingled in this fabulous venue, food and drinks were in no short supply. Novo Fogo cachaca, Moon Mountain and Jose Cuervo Platino helped get the party started. But what's a party without great local beer?! Big Al Brewing, Two Beers Brewing and Emerald City Beer were on hand pouring some of the best brews in town. And to reward guests who opted to be designated drivers for the evening, sponsors Zip Car and Honest Tea awarded non-drinking guests with special goodie bags in their fancy designated drivers' lounge! DRY Soda also helped wet the whistles of guests who opted for an alternative to drinking liquor and beer. Yum!

Picnik collage4

Between all of the drinking and donating, yelpers were gettin' hungry! Chao Bistro, Kukuruza Gourmet Popcorn, PopChips, Cupcake Royale, KIND Snacks, Greek Gods Yogurt, the Nordic Heritage Museum and Treats for the Streets all helped fill those hungry tummies with yummy snacks and appetizers.

Picnik collage5

Capturing it all on (digital) film, The World is Fun (TWIF) made sure each guest got the opportunity to take a great group photo with friends before leaving the fun-filled event, all the while Fremont Abbey Arts Center kept the party poppin' with live musical performances, dance troupes, and even live painting exhibits! The artwork was auctioned off for charity and a few lucky guests got to go home with some local masterpieces. Other guests were awarded with bottles of wine for beating out competitors at Treehouses' coloring competition. Across the room even more bottles of wine were gifted to guests who won a round of wine bottle ring toss!

Picnik collage6
Picnik collage7

Meanwhile, the guys and gals from Grist hosted a fun round of 'beer' pong (using water) and the Movember crew challenged guests to games of Connect Four for fabulous prizes. Also in attendance there was Paws, Interconnection, Rwanda Partners (and a 6ft elephant!), Team Survivor NW, Teatro Zinzanni, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Lifelong AIDS Alliance, Seattle Works, FIUTS, the Vera Project, Room to Read, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Washington Trails Association, Pacific Northwest Diabetes Research Institute, One Brick, Boys & Girls Club of King County, APIWFSE, March of Dimes, Washington Bus, Fare Start and Global Music Project.

Yelp Bowls Into Cincinnati!

Bowling was taken to a new level Saturday night - away from bored teenagers and obsessive rollers with names like “The Dude” – when Cincinnati Yelp filled Star Lanes on the Levee for some bites, booze and bowling!

Photo2

The mood-lit, neon-glowing area was a grand place for anyone to party. Yelpers were given the special back VIP area, which included a patio, multiple pool tables, our own personal bar and, of course, four lanes of rocking bowling.

Forty people were able to play in total (ten per lane), creating some fierce competition amongst rollers. Winners of each game took home the coveted tiny Yelp trophy, complete with a “People Love Us on Yelp” mini-sticker. A worthy prize for any victorious pin-destroying champion.

Photo1
Working this hard would build up an appetite in anyone, and we had all that covered. Star Lanes served up monstrous mouth-watering munchies, including pizza, mini-burgers, fries, pot stickers, chicken skewers and coconut shrimp. But it was the delicious fried mac & cheese bites that knocked everyone down! As Becky R put it, “I wasn't sure how the food was going to be, but I was blown away by the delicious items we were able to enjoy! Mmmmm omnomnomnom.”

Yelp Elite Event 1 059
Dos Lunas Tequila and Budweiser took care of quenching everyone’s thirst with a selection of beers and signature drinks including a Pomegranate Margarita, Rested Ginger and the star of the evening: the Yelp-A-Rita, which was made with Dos Lunas Silver Tequila, Taste of Florida Margarita Mix, fresh lime and … Bud Light Lime? Indeed! “It was fabulous. You would really think tequila and Bud Light wouldn’t go together, but they so do!” Rachel G declared. The way they were quickly being made and downed, we’re not surprised at all.

But don’t just take our word on the night’s awesomeness, you can read all the reviews right here. You can also check out the other awesome pics by photographer extraordinaire Angie Livesay on the Official Yelp Flickr page.

Thanks for a fantastic night and we hope you all struck out (in the best way possible!)

Teatro Zinzanni hosted more than 350 guests who came dressed to impress. Whether they wore their best theatre garb or brought out the boas and masks, it was an unforgettable event!

1
2
Whether it was the mini caprese salads, the goat cheese crostini, chicken on a puffed pastry, salmon mousse in cucumber or the chocolate-covered strawberries, guests were spoiled with not just a fabulous show but fab food to boot!

3
4
Chilled champagne and Honest Tea were on hand to wet the whistles of guests as they watched an incredible trapeze performance by the Ssens Duo.

5
Wild Smiles face painting kept the party poppin' as complimentary face painting was offered to guests who came under-dressed.

Yelp LA Gives Back

While Elite parties are usually filled with boozy goodness, Yelp LA Elites decided to put the hangover on hold to partner with local nonprofit L.A. Works to beautify a 'hood.

                              P8280355 P8280263 P8280347

The philanthropic posse donned overalls (oh wait, that was just me!) in Cypress Park (and drank Antigua coffee) and was immediately put to work painting a bridge over the 110 with bright colors. Three hours later, you would never know that this was once covered in graffiti! See for yourself!

                             P8280340 P8280445 P8280316

And after? Well, there was a party, naturally. The Verdugo patio provided the perfect rest stop to sample Crispin Cider and Fox Barrel, grub down on Masa of Echo Park's deep dish pizza, swallow Sweet Dreamery mini cupcakes whole and hang with the cool cats of Camarena tacos. Although the group was pretty wiped out from a hard day's work, board games and good times were had as the DJ spun some Jamaican jams for everyone to enjoy.

Seattle Gets Savory, Sexy and Sweet!

Seattle's Elite squad showed off their photography skills at their latest event in SODO this past Friday. Sharing more than just useful, funny and cool reviews with each other, these community members brought out the big guns with photos of savory, sexy and sweet foods! It was truly a titillating event as local art gallery, Ouch My Eye shared space in their current breast exhibit for a Yelp photo competition!

Yelp_OuchMyEye-15 Yelp_OuchMyEye-23 Yelp_OuchMyEye-73

To feed the hungry photogs and art fans, Herban Feast came to the rescue and provided some of the yummiest and most beautifully displayed appetizers yet. Guests mixed and mingled with friends while nibbling on trays of olives, cheese, crab cakes, a variety of puff pastries and more! And what's more fun than winning prizes? Winning the booby prize! The Erotic Bakery pulled out all of the stops with their sexy breast themed desserts for the winners of our photography competition. Congrats Sean T, Russell L, and Johnny W!

Yelp_OuchMyEye-1 Yelp_OuchMyEye-12 Yelp_OuchMyEye-34 Yelp_OuchMyEye-7 Yelp_OuchMyEye-8

As if great food and great art wouldn't suffice, our friends from Super Deli & Grocery donated an ice cold keg filled with Ninkasi beer. A menu of cocktails mixed with Novo Fogo cachaca was also available. Word on the street is that the Red Tailed Parrot was a favorite that night! And for the DD's DRY Soda and Stumptown Coffee were on hand to provide tasty non-alcoholic options.

Seattle Yelp Moutsache Bash!

M_Bash2_WEB

It was hipster heaven at the HG Lodge in Seattle this week as yelpers came out for the Moustache Bash. There's no better spot in Seattle to pay homage flannel and facial hair than this cabin themed club! Adorned with taxidermied animals, stone walls and cozy booths, there was plenty of space to mix and mingle or even dance your 'stache off!

  YelpMoustacheBash-2 YelpMoustacheBash-1 YelpMoustacheBash-6
Whether it was a wig, a mullet, a moustache or even a unibrow, we had it all! Prizes were awarded to those with the most votes for 'best get-up.' Real or fake, it was all about how bold you were. Some folks even decorated their belly buttons!

Forget to dress to impress? Salon Swagger saved the day by providing super fun up-dos (and up-don'ts) to guests who came under prepared.

  YelpMoustacheBash-28 YelpMoustacheBash-64 YelpMoustacheBash-25

But what's a party without food and drinks? To keep bellies fed the awesome folks from Skillet came out to spoil yelpers with tasty sliders and poutine. And just two days after their official launch, Molly Moon's brand new ice cream truck parked out front to serve up some of their most popular flavors!

Skillet Skillet-burger-540px YelpMoustacheBash-47

Washing down the yummy in their tummies wouldn't have been possible without our amazing friends from Ninkasi beer and Absolut Vodka. Spoiling us even more, Ninkasi hooked it up with a keg of their Radiant Summer Ale, one of only two kegs in the entire city of Seattle!

West Seattle's Royale Block Party

Seattle's Elite Squad joined together in an effort to "legalize frostitution" on Thursday, May 27th. A Block Party was held in West Seattle as folks gathered 'round to decorate and eat cupcakes from legendary local hot spot Cupcake Royale and sip on wines at neighboring Bin 41

    RoyaleBlockParty-01 RoyaleBlockParty-07  RoyaleBlockParty-09  RoyaleBlockParty-15 RoyaleBlockParty-53 RoyaleBlockParty-30 RoyaleBlockParty-10 RoyaleBlockParty-44
In addition to creating your own cupcake at the sprinkle bar, guests were also treated to a sneak preview of June's flavor, roasted coconut and lime. Paired with champagne or coffee these treats were swallowed up pretty fast!

  RoyaleBlockParty-12 RoyaleBlockParty-66 RoyaleBlockParty-11 RoyaleBlockParty-39 RoyaleBlockParty-29
No party is perfect without flours! So the folks from Shepherds Grain were on hand to pass out individual bags of locally produced organic flour to each attending guest. This same flour is used in Cupcake Royale's cupcakes so it was an especially nice treat!

Across the street, local wine shop Bin 41 provided a lovely pairing of local wines with even more cupcake flavors!

RoyaleBlockParty-34 RoyaleBlockParty-56 RoyaleBlockParty-62 RoyaleBlockParty-26 RoyaleBlockParty-36

As if that weren't enough, yelpers were also able to win raffle prizes from local artist Mary Patchin! Her artwork adorned some of the walls during the event and 6 lucky guests were able to win one-of-a-kind cupcake art.

Denver Yelp Gets Yelpapalooza'd!

Last Wednesday, yelpers showed up in droves to help Yelp Denver celebrate their biggest event yet - our 2nd birthday at Mile High Station! (Inclement weather, be damned.) More than 700 yelpers indulged in adult bev's from Cruz Tequila, Rain Vodka, suds from Deschutes Brewery and grape from Barefoot Wine and Bubbly, plus drinky-drinks from Fuze, BOA Energy Drink, and Parsley. DJ Savior Breath (Eryc Eyl) got the party started with big tunes to help everyone get down, and kept it going throughout the evening.

Local bands Bonnie and the Beard, Brothers O'Hair, and hometown favorites The Knew rocked the party all night! And local vendors Tootsies, Salon Foushee and Fanciful Faces Boulder got everybody dressed and tressed up. Colorado Ice Sculptures amazed with a gorgeous Yelp ice sculpture indoors, accompanied by a live demo throughout the evening out on the patio, and Krista Shiner of Shiner Studios showed off her artistic skills on concrete and canvas on the mezzanine. The gift bag room was stuffed with all kinds of goodies, including Lara bars, Qdoba gift certificates, and mags from Colorado Music Buzz. Shouts out to Greater Range DJ and Sound Town for making the night run so smoothly!

Delicious bites were provided by Lovely Confections, Little Man Ice Cream, Bombay Bistro, Denver Pizza Company, Qdoba, Gastro Cart, Denver Biscuit Company, and Biker Jim's Gourmet Hot Dog Stand. A few lucky yelpers won stupendous gifts: a $50 gift certificate to Fogo de Chao, passes to the UMS, and free entry to the CRY America walk in July. Taking photographic evidence of the evening were photobooths hosted by Shutterbooth and John Bosley Photography, with more snappy snaps taken by Adam Russell and Randall Paetzold. Thumbs up to Yellow Cab for providing a taxi stand and cab vouchers for folks who needed rides home.

Yelp Has A Black And White Affair

This was not just another Tuesday evening in Orlando, FL... This was a Black and White Elite Affair at the progressive and classy Luma on Park!  We rolled out the red carpet and 40 Elites took over "The Cellar" which is Luma's private dining area located below the main dining room filled to the brim with amazing wines.

The entire night was filled with mixing and mingling our way around the room as we connected with fellow yelpers both new and old.  For some it was their first event so long awaited introductions were finally satisfied!  Our very own personal wait staff made sure the wine was flowing and the food was filling  as we chatted all evening. To get things hoppin' there were two games that had some people guessing up until the end. Yelpers had yelpy sayings written on a card they were given as they walked in and were challenged with "meeting their match." As a reward for matching pairs that found eachother, they were given a Yelp goodie bag filled with snazzy Yelp swag.  Chocolate galore: 917 Black, White & Red M&M'S to be exact! A "Newbie" Yelper: Marysol V took home the yummy sweets for being the closest to guess the amount. Congrats!

Huge thank you to Tim and the classy team at Luma. This posh Elite experience was lovely and delicious. Want more? Check out all the photos from the very talented Gustavo Vargas, read the reviews and catch up with all the chatter on Talk.

Yelp Goes to the Prom!

Because high school prom wasn't awkward enough the first time, Seattle yelpers did it again! This time though, the punch was spiked! Over 330 of Seattle's finest yelpers came dressed to the nines to celebrate prom, Yelp style at Spitfire in Belltown.

Some lucky guests were greeted at the doors with complimentary corsages and boutonnieres courtesy of Seattle's new Marigold & Mint! Prior to the event there was an election held and the top ten prom king and queen nominees were announced upon their arrival. Other guests were given the opportunity to get their hair and make up done by our friends from the Gilt Edge Society and the Sweet Spot.

Lookin' as fab as ever, yelpers got the chance to get a prom photo taken by local photographer, Trishann Couvillion from Fire Eyes Photography. Snapping shots of the event, Yelp also got some great help from Brian and Jennifer from Photo Elan

Guests were also treated with Yelp lunchboxes, hoodies, and schwag galore! With goodies in hand, guests rocked it out to the tunes of Seattle's own DJ Drew Hobson, aka DJ Doughboy. Mixin' music from all generations, yelpers danced their hearts out while snacking on sliders, popcorn shrimp, quesadillas and and chocolate pouring from fondue fountains!

Half way through the night the king and queens were announced. That's right - there was a tie! Each winner was awarded with a complimentary bottle of wine from the 509 Winery and Tasting Room. What a night to remember!
