"The weather forecast for Sunday night said cloudy with a chance of pork and chicken meatballs--and for once, the meteorologists got it right!" reports Julia N. "ShopHouse generously opened their doors to treat us to endless savory meatballs, spicy broccoli, and tangy papaya slaw." Yelpers also got a special tasting of brews from far off lands such as Laos, Vietnam and Thailand.
After the feast, Yelpers were split up into three groups and were rotated through three stations where they got a behind-the-scenes lesson on how to make Shophouse's famous papaya slaw and wok charred corn as well as a tasting of all of the fresh and exotic ingredients that are used to create their signature bowls. "The wok was very heavy, and the area was hot!," Holly H confesses. " The people running the station did not seem to mind; in fact everyone working at Shophouse seemed to LOVE their jobs! This came across so much, that I remember turning to a friend at the event and telling them I was considering a new career."
At the end of the night, Shophouse employees drew the winners for our Ugly Sweater Contest and our DC Central Kitchen raffle donation winner. "I won the raffle prize and took home a giant wok filled with a gift card, samples of Asian beers and sauces, and an entire eggplant! I am very excited to put my new found Shophouse knowledge to work," Brian S shares.
