Yelp Turn's Water Into Wine
The recent opening of Foxes Island Cellar Door in Auckland provided Yelpers with the unique opportunity to try one of New Zealand’s top Marlborough wines direct from the producer.
Greeted at the door by the charismatic John Belsham, Owner and Winemaker at Foxes Island, Yelpers were given a taste of their elegant 2009 Riesling – the perfect start to a fabulous evening! Whilst Yelpers mixed and mingled, they grazed on deliciously moreish Whangaripo Buffalo Cheeses and an array of breads from Bread and Butter.
John and Kelly talked to the Yelpers about how the vineyard started back in 1992, speaking passionately about the Awatere Valley and how the land is expressed in the wine - the gravels providing the minerality in the Riesling and the climate in the valley providing the cold nights required for the Pinot Noir.
Yelpers also heard from Morven, the National Sales Manager for Antipodes Water. If you think winemakers are passionate, you need to listen to Morven talk about Antipodes. We don’t blame her though, their water is pretty spectacular.
Sourced from a 327m deep aquifer in Whakatane, Antipodes is incredibly pure and bottled with no chemical interference. With a minerality content of only 130mg/l - which is incredibly low compared to other premium bottled waters - it’s the perfect companion to food and wine. Not to mention Antipodes is the only carbon neutral water in Australiasia. Very impressive!
Yelpers then sampled the Foxes Island 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, 2009 Chardonnay and their wonderfully earthy, fruit driven 2008 Pinot Noir. Each Yelper had their own personal favourite but as Jan D mentions, “the surprise of the night was the Riesling,” with lots of Yelpers expressing interest in ordering a case online when they got home.
until next time,
