Yelp's After School Special At St. Andrew's Hall
Pop quiz! Who hosts the best events around Detroit? If you're answer is Yelp then you get a gold star! Last week hundreds of Yelp folks from around Metro-Detroit flocked to the legendary St. Andrew's Hall as we took over all 3 floors for a party packed with rockin' tunes, fab fashion, delicious treats, and a 9 foot LED transformer.
The evening kicked off with a set by the bodacious kids of Rock and Roll Prep School. Ranging in ages 10-17, these kids kicked out jams by The Beatles, Weezer, The White Stripes, AC/DC and more while DJs Chuck Sipperley, Craig Huckaby and DJ Skeez threw down on the wheels of steel throughout the night.
The venue was packed full with over 20 food and drink vendors providing tastings of their outrageous offerings. Guests enjoyed bites from: Good People Popcorn, Green Dot Stables, Just Baked, KIND Snacks, Mac Shack, Olga's Kitchen, Peteet's Famous Cheesecake, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, Rock City Pies, Skybar Lounge, Treat Dreams, and Zoup! To wash it all down? Sips from: Blue Nectar Tequila, Ciroc Amaretto, El Mayor Tequila, Lady Bligh Spiced Rum, M. Lawrence Sparkling Wine, Pearl Vodka, Pearl Gin, Tito's Handmade Vodka, Jones Soda, and Great Lakes Coffee.
Back to school looks were all the rage as a fashion show hosted by WDIV's Ashley Baracy dominated the main stage. T-shirt designers Detroit Respect kicked things off with Detroit KRYO, a 9 foot LED robot (fully equipped with lasers, smoke and more) who observed as their models strutted their stuff showing off Detroit friendly t-shirts, hoodies, bags and more. LilacPOP Studio followed up with striking jewlery pieces made from mixed metals and vintage machinery and Matthew F Richmond closed out the evening with his dazzling dresses made from bubble wrap, trashbags, and even Yelp stickers!
Rounding out the evening were hair and make up stations by L'esprit Academy, moveable type demonstrations from Salt & Cedar, photobooths by Mammothbooth! and Shutterbooth, videography by Velocity Cow, and discounted rides home from Uber (boasting cars stocked with KIND Snacks and Honest Tea).
The best part? It was all for charity! A suggested donation of $5 at the door benefited local non-profit Operation: Kid Equip. Their goal? To provide backpacks, school supplies, clothing, snacks and more to underpriviledged kids in Metro-Detroit. Additional donations to the nonprofit netted guests entries in a raffle to win prizes from: 9 Lives Tattoo, Aveda Twelve Oaks, Bagger Dave's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Catching Fireflies, Emagine, Go Comedy! Improv Theater, Jones Soda, Just Baked, M. Lawrence Sparkling Wine, Lush Twelve Oaks, Olga's Kitchen, Pearl Vodka, Tito's Handmade Vodka, and Treat Dreams! In the end we raised Operation: Kid Equip nearly $2,200. That's a lot of pencils!
Many thanks go out to all our food and sponsors for the evening, the kids of Rock & Roll Prep School, all our DJs, the additional entertainment and photo/video friends for helping document the evening, L'esprit for making everyone look their best, Ashley Baracy for giving her time to host the evening, Janna Coumoundouros from LilacPOP for putting together the stunning fashion show, Matthew Richmond and Colin McConnell from Detroit Respect for assisting and bringing their amazing designs to show, all their models for giving their time to strut their stuff, Yelptern Chelcie W for her tireless work helping put the evening together, Columbus Community Manager Christina C for coming out and lending a hand, and last but not certainly least, Ashleigh, Krysten and the rest of the staff at St. Andrew's Hall. To say we couldn't have done this without you is an understatement.
Until next time!
