Yelp Goes Gatsby - Yelper Party!
Last Saturday night, members of the Yelp Charleston community came out to Woolfe Street Playhouse for the biggest Yelp bash of 2013 – Yelp Goes Gatsby! Guests were encouraged to enjoy light fare from four local restaurants, plus lavish libations from four unique alcohol vendors. While we wet our whistles, DJ Vu Tran and DJ D Chuck kept things lively, spinning tunes from the top balcony. We briefly interrupted the crowd for Dance FX to perform a Gatsby inspired number on stage. This shin-dig was free to all guests who RSVP'd on Yelp and made it out to the playhouse that evening. Donations were collected at the door, and also by "cigarette girls" mingling through the crowd to help support the Village Repertory to continue their creative performances for years to come.
Welcoming a line of Yelpers down the street, a red carpet ran along side the old Meddin Bros. meat packing plant, which has now been converted into the marvelous Woolfe Street Playhouse. Walking inside felt as though you were being invited into Jay Gatsby's personal residence. The venue alone is already the perfect setting for this Gatsby inspired get together, but it would't be complete if we didn't take things over the top. We called in Event DRS and JMC Charleston who supplied all the feathers and frills to add the glitz and glam to this one of a kind space. Charleston's newest creative space, The 827, provided the artwork of local artist Neti to display throughout the front lobby.
Party goers showed up hungry and immediately went straight for the food tables. Ted's Butcherblock was handing out generously sized Wagyu Beef Sliders with Garlic Shoestring Fries. Bon Banh Mi served up a plate of Bun Cha which is a rice noodle dish packed with veggies, house made pork meatballs, and Vietnamese sausage. The Barbeque Joint was slinging Pork Sliders partnered with their gooey Mac n' Cheese, while Locals Bar rolled out their Tobo Sushi Bar. Along with their fresh rolled Competition Roll and Pacific Roll, Yelpers were treated to a side of their off-menu Wasabi Slaw.
What better way to get a party started than to add a little giggle juice… or maybe a lot? New Belgium Brewing covered the brews with eight different bottles and two draught choices including their highly sought after Lips Of Faith series. To keep your brew safe and cold, they were live screen printing koozies for guests to wrap their beer in pride. Prohibition wouldn't have been the same without moonshine, so we brought in Evol Spirits to create a list of cocktails including the Snow White, Dr Evol, and Evol Mule. Additional offerings for those looking to get up close and personal with this gluten and sugar free spirit were Evol on the rocks or an Evol shooter. Charleston born Wine Awesomeness was in attendance as well, uncorking four decadent bottles and pouring them all night. They were offering a ten dollar credit for anyone in attendance to be used on their website too. Voodoo Lounge luckily put bartender Caroline to work for some of her famous infusions. Typically only available at Voodoo in Avondale, Caroline's Pecan Bourbon and Pumpkin Pie Vodka shooters were introduced to the outside world.
Right at the peak of the party, the music came down and brought the lights with it for an unprecedented performance by the amazing Dance FX. This custom performance was a collaboration between Daft Concept Choreographer Jamal Tisdale and the Executive Director of Dance FX Charleston Jenny Broe. Their creation erupted on stage with a precise and seductive performance ,that Jay Gatsby himself would surely have considered to the bees knees, leaving the crowd screaming for more. Later in the evening, a couple Dance FXers gave in to the crowds requests with an impromptu break dance challenge causing additional explosions of applause.
Capturing all the action and fantastic fashions with those fancy photo boxes and movie cameras were Brittany and Morgan of Focal Fox, and Andrew Walker of Rogue Wave Creative Development. Patrick Hall Weddings put together a creative take on your everyday photo booth allowing guests to take their own photos and immediately view them on a large screen behind them.
Hundreds of Yelpers had a big night on the town learning about local businesses and supporting the local arts. Almost everyone in attendance was dressed to impress with their flapper style and dapper digs. Two folks were even awarded best dressed guests of the night scoring some exclusive Yelp schwag. Everyone else was welcome to take home their custom mason jar mugs and and additional yelp goodies. At the end of the night, CoPilot Designated Drivers was on hand offering discounted rides to get guests and their rides home safely.
