Yelp Geeks Out @ The TechShop in Pittsburgh

Posted by Rachel Carlson

Over 360 Pittsburgh Yelpers gathered for the second annual Yelper Party held at the newly opened TechShop in Bakery Square for Yelp Geeks Out. We ate, we laughed and we created! "Welcome to the land of tasty tastings and scientific experiments!" exclaims Lauren G. And we couldn't have put it any better ourselves.

TechShop People

Guests were greeted by No Wait, who helped us round up eager beavers who wanted to check out the tech. With some of the "make it, it take it" classes running, Yelpers were able to see first hand just how geek chic this place can be! From glass etching, to screen printing, metal cut flowers to chocolate mold making, there was a variety of creative corners to check out.

Aja J got a little taste of the plasma cut flower class, where she "came out with a stunning (if I do say so myself) creation sure to be the envy of everyone I force to look at it when they visit me." Commonwealth Press manned the screen printing area were Britney C "got to apply the paint" herself and watched in wonder as "it dried in like 10 seconds under a heat lamp. We also took part in the etched glass making where this 80 watt laser moves slowly over the glass causing it to basically burn off some of the surface."

TechShop Sponsors
"I mean, when do you get a chance to nosh down on a liquid nitrogen frozen marshmallow?" asks Miriam W. Thanks to the Carnegie Science Center, attendees got to experience that as well as some electrifiying experiments! And, let's not forget the Pittsburgh Glass Center who also had their own display of fire and glass that was a hot stop.

As Yelpers packed into the TechShop, DJD PGH pumped out some jammin' tunes while people like Ashley H noshed on some food and sampled some drinks: "I could not believe how many vendors there were. I saw BBQ, ice cream, vodka, whoopie pies, bruschetta, beer... you name it, it was there. We sampled EVERYTHING - and some twice. I felt like a kid in a candy shop... only it was the TechShop." With over 20 food and drink sponsors, no one left the venue without grabbing some tasty treats! "What a great sampling experience" according to Gary R. "I tasted things that still linger with me and want to go back! I could go on and on!"

Want a little heartwarning? We raised almost $1,000 for Big Brothers, Big Sisters! That supports one child through the program for a whole year!

TechShop Drinks
Thanks to our incredible food sponsors: Barre, Betsy's Ice Cream, Bluebird Kitchen, Burgh Bites Cart, The Livermore, Mercurio's, Savoy, Six Penn Kitchen, Social, Thin Man Sandwich Shop, Wild Purveyors, YinzBurgh BBQ

Thanks to our amazing drink sponsors: Great Lakes Brewing Company, Fresh From the Farm Juices, Natrona Bottling Company, Penn Brewery, Pittsburgh Winery, Red Star Kombucha, Tito's Handmade Vodka, Turners Ice Tea and Wigle Whiskey.TechShop Food

A big thank you to The TechShop, General Manager Matt Verlinich and the amazing staff for treating Yelpers to such an amazing evening! Also, thanks to Porter Loves Photography for the fab photo's that you can check out here.

OTP: Yelp's Big Bite: Italian

Posted by HeidiP

When the moon hits your eye like a big-a pizza pie, that's Yelp's Big Bite: Italian!

In September, everyone was family! Yelpers joined in for a little of this, a little of that at some magnifico special events hosted by these fantastico local businesses. Mangia!

YBB pix 48th

We began at E 48th Street Market, Dunwoody, to learn Segreti di Famiglia [family secrets] and the simplicity of cooking Italian food. Adam B’s eyes were opened, “E 48th Street Market has practically been in my backyard for the last 27 years. And what a discovery...  If you are an ex-pat from the Northeast, then you know that you have been missing Italian delis ever since you moved here.  Charlie's market is that and so much more.” We watched owner Charlie Augello demonstrate how they make their fresh Mozzarella, learned about the homemade sauces like Marinara, Bolognese and Sausage Ragu, and we heard about and saw a few Traditional Italian Salumi: Prosciutto di Palma, Speck, Mortadella. We sampled everything, including their pizza!

YBB pix crema

Next up for Yelp’s Big Bite, Crema Café, Dunwoody, welcomed Yelpers with a gourmet Italian espresso demonstration and tasting as well as an up close demo of espresso foaming and techniques. Chef Yossi taught us about the three M's of espresso Miscela, Macchina, e Mano meaning the blend, the machine and the hand behind the cup, and served us complimentary mini Italian sandwiches, salads and lasagna in this large and inviting cafe! “I had a tiramisu (the perfect bite served with the perfect tiny spoon) and a dark chocolate-orange truffle.” Lindy F admits, “If the server had come back, I would have mugged her for her truffle tray - no joke.

YBB pix2

Then we experienced the sweet and the savory, with Dolce e Salato at Alpine Bakery and Trattoria, Alpharetta. Along with complimentary beer, discounted cocktails from Vixen Vodka and entertainment by Amy Baldwin, we sampled Italian snacks and goodies – Dolce, or sweet, included mini cannoli, cookies, key lime bites, mini fresh fruit tarts and truffles. The Salato, Savory, Yelpers were served mini meatballs, calamari, mini risotto cakes, mini crab cakes, Italian rice balls and antipasto. Naima W rated it, “Definitely one of my favorite Yelp events I ever attended!  This event was very laid back and fun to be a part of. We had a private area on the patio and it was such a beautiful night to be out there. We even had a vocalist with an incredible voice singing amazing songs.

YBB pix Dom

Next up: Dominic's at Clay Oven, Marietta, Yelpers – elite and non-elite – all sat together like a traditional Italian family at the big table, or Grande Tavolo, and enjoyed garlic knots, salad, antipasto, classic pizza, pasta, garlic breads, and rainbow cookies! Daniel B noted, “This is what Yelp is about - introducing us to local businesses we otherwise wouldn't know about.  A big thank you to owner Dominic, his wife Lindsey, artist Kristopher Meadows, and the rest of Dominic's staff for graciously inviting us into their restaurant and showing us a good time.” They sipped complimentary beer and special wine, heard about the art classes held there taught by Kris, and Dominic demonstrated the magical making of garlic knots, which quickly disappeared.

YBB pix Campania

At Campania Pizzeria Napoletana, in Alpharetta, Yelpers learned about Il Forno e La Farina, the oven and the flour, and tasted complimentary Neapolitan Pizza made by a true Neapolitan! Chef Stefano talked about what makes this type of pie different from others! The excitement continued with discounts on Peroni and Limoncello shots, as well as a special Check-In deal for a complimentary mysterious gift card worth $5, $10 or $20! Emily H commented, “I see now why this series is called "Yelp's Big Bite." I don't remember enjoying this much food at a Yelp event before. It. Was. Awesome.

YBB pix

Yelpers gathered at The Wine Cellars in Smyrna for Vino e Formaggio. They tasted and learn about six different wines and 8+ cheeses. Yelpers answered wine trivia and fact questions from their tasting notes, and won prizes! Annie C wraps up our conclusion, “The amazing array of Italian centric events fantastically put together by Heidi. This event was no different than its' predecessors: a super fun and knowledgeable evening with gourmet apps - and this time dranks!

Thanks to Joy, Kassie and Mark from LeahAndMark.com and Heather N. Croas for various photography!

Yelp's Cocktail Affair @ Wxyz Lounge

Posted by Bella

Tucson Yelpers are privy to hot spots across town and our Elite Event at W XYZ Lounge at Aloft Tucson University was our swankiest cocktail event yet. A new addition to the hotel scene, Aloft University offers a chic indoor and outdoor cocktail lounge that's open to locals too! While Wxyz lounge primarily focuses on their craft cocktails and full service bar their bar bites from their snack attack menu are showstoppers too.

Dressed to the nines, Elites and their guests showed up for a fun flowing good time. Yeeps were treated to everything from a delicious spread of bar bites to signature cocktails (BSRita and Organic Green) Magnolia Grove wine, specially produced for Starwood Hotels, and a live DJ, while the lovely Jessa, from Four Peaks Brewing Company poured Kilt Lifter all night long!

Newly elited, Katie P was delighted by her first Elite Event: "Upscale but comfortable. I'm gushing - I just felt so welcomed, and really enjoyed the opportunity to try out a spot that I normally wouldn't have ventured into!" Check out the other 5-star reviews here!

It wouldn't be an Elite Event without a little action! With three exciting prizes up for grabs, guests were given an hour to complete the little game of "Find a Yelper Who..." Those who completed the entire questionnaire were eligible for the give-away. "Yelp Elite Events rock! I especially love when we've got an ice breaker game goin' on. Mingling, asking questions and hanging out. My fellow Yelpers are the nicest people and I so enjoy meeting each and every one of you," exclaims Kathy N. Lucky Yelpers won tickets to The Tucson Beer Cup, The Tucson Ladies Council Monte Carlo Fashion Show and a One Night Stay at Aloft. Congrats to Mark A, Joseph L and Saba B!

A huge thank you to the gracious and welcoming team at W XYZ for showing us a fabulous time, Jessa from Four Peaks and Elizabeth Miller for snapping pics!

Yelp Phoenix Gets So Yelp And So Clean

Yelp isn’t just a restaurant review site and the Yelp events prove it! Yelp Elites got together at the car wash, yes the car wash, but this isn’t your average car wash. In fact, Tom's Thumb Fresh Market has award winning BBQ, an in-house pastry chef who whips up delectable desserts and rows of local gifts and goodies ready to be purchased and taken home. Phoenix Elites will never look at a car wash the same way again.

Gas station

Elites and their guests were greeted at the entrance of the car wash, where they dropped their ride off to get cleaned inside and out during the party. With car keys handed over, they proceeded inside where they were greeted by a local gem of a store. Those who checked in on Yelp received a nifty miniature flashlight key chain and had a chance to guess how many cars were in the jar for the chance to win tickets to a Taste of SanTan and the Scottsdale Showdown. After getting checked in, the party goers started browsing through the shop in the midst of getting greeted by surprises around every corner.

Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market’s chef was on-hand giving demonstrations of their award winning BBQ preparation while Elites enjoyed plates full of BBQ treats including pulled pork sliders, pulled pork tacos, quesadillas, mac ‘n cheese and coleslaw. In between bites, they washed down their BBQ with local beer and wine.

For those with a sweet tooth, the in-house pastry chef was on hand doing a cooking demonstration on how to prepare their delicious cinnamon rolls while the Elites loaded up their plates with homemade cookies and cupcakes. In the midst of eating, drinking and shopping the rows of local gifts, Elites also had the chance to watch a headlight restoration demo that explained how to fix your headlights without replacing them.

With cars clean from top to bottom and tummies full of delicious treats, Elites left enlightened by the most unique gas station and car wash on the block. A special thank you goes out to Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market for hosting the party and for Wrap Arizona for capturing it all on camera. If you haven’t done so already, be sure to look at the reviews and pictures!

Until next time, SYOY!

Boston Elites Appreciate Art On High At The Kensington!

Posted by Damien S

We know parties, and we know parties belong in the restaurant and nightclub scene. So what in the hey-o drew us to a luxury apartment high-rise smack dab in the middle of the city? Two words: Club Kensington. And on Wednesday, more than 150 Elite Yelpers, guests and residents of the building mingled among the curated art, slick design and outdoor pool decks of The Kensington's sixth floor for Yelp's High Art Elite Event!

From the reclined solarium overlooking the skydeck's autumnal draw, to the tech-free Unplugged lounge and fully loaded in-house gym, Club Kensington was made for socialization. Yelpers explored the MFA-curated space, while Chinatown neighbors Shojo sampled tastes of their incredible menu. Platters of Peking duck rolls, pulled char sui pork crostinis and skewers of chunks from a whole Thai roasted pig sated the savory seeking, while sweet fans found coconut flan with fresh berry puree to snack on. All the while, guests washed down the bites with Cold Tea cocktails, powered by American Harvest organic spirit, and tall boys of Sixpoint's The Crisp.

Armed with their trusty Yelp app, those who checked in to the event were entered to land a weekend stay in The Kensington's guest suite, a furnished apartment only available to guests of residents. Congrats to Gene L for being the baller checker-inner he is, and taking home the grand prize! Tatsu snapped the action in a series of stills, the reviews are rolling in and Yelpers are firing up the Talk boards! Tag familiar freinds on the Facebook album, then take a look around your domicile. Care to upgrade?

Yours on high-

Yelp LV's Red Carpet Affair @ Sammy's

Posted by Drew

A stylish setting and innovative menu come together in the new Sammy’s Restaurant, Bar & Grill as 150 Elite members, plus their guests, were given the red carpet treatment before Sammy's doors officially open to the public. With yelpers dressed to the nines, DJ Bri rocking swanky tunes and Viva Photo Booth on hand, this party is guaranteed to be on everyone's 'Best of 2013' list!

Sammy's 1

Elite members didn't just get a tasting of the delicious new menu items at Sammy's, they were given carte blanche! Any item they wanted to taste was made available, and taste they did! Bethany E: "We started with the Hot Rock appetizer. Amazing! The steak had an unique flavor and made it easy to eat very quickly...  Maybe too quickly! I ordered the shrimp and grits while my husband stuck with the NY strip. The shrimp and grits hit the spot! I love grits, especially when they are perfectly made with provolone goodness baked in! They were so creamy and complemented the grilled shrimp well. Loved it! The hubby's steak was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. It was a huge portion that he could barely finish. We both powered through our delicious meals! To finish it off we split the mini donuts... Yum! They were sprinkled delicately with powdered sugar with chocolate and raspberry sauces drizzled on the side. All of this delicious food will definitely have us coming back again."

Sammy's 2

Fantastic food has a sidekick named cocktail and Sammy's made two signature drinks for the evening. The Red Rock Sunset (Malibu rum, vodka, triple sec, peach schnapps, sweet n’ sour) and Rockne H's fave, The Pear Persuasion "made with Stoli vodka, pear puree, agave nectar and lime juice. This drink was amazing! It was sweet but not overpowering. You could taste the agave and it was super pleasant."

Sammy's 3

Got the crave for more Sammy's? Read all the 5-star reviews, check out the red carpet photos and see all the photobooth fun! Warning: They'll make you hungry!

Soirée Elite de Rentrée @ The Sylmar Restaurant

YELP ELITE #13 La rentrée @The Sylmar ©AliceG-8

YELP ELITE #13 La rentrée @The Sylmar ©AliceG-27

YELP ELITE #13 La rentrée @The Sylmar ©AliceG-63

Brisbane's Yelp Elite Squad Sings For Their Supper

Posted by Lani P.

"Sing for your supper," the team at Spring said. The Brisbane Yelp Elite Squad may not have literally sung for their supper during the September Elite Event at Spring in Brisbane's CBD, but they certainly worked for it.

PicMonkey Collage1
Under the guidance of our chef for the evening, Mark, each group (the squad was split in two) was put to work making several canapés for the remaining group to eat. From pulled pork sliders with pumpkin and pineapple salsa, duck breast with a blueberry compote on a sourdough crouton and the favourite of the evening, a salmon rillette with aioli, salmon roe and beetroot relish - we all learnt the art of small eats.

PicMonkey Collage2
While one half toiled and served our first round of food for the evening, the remaining members of the squad sipped on blood orange carprioskas from Spring's newly launched cocktail menu. Anna C thinks they might even be her new favourite drink. They even sent us home with a beautiful sample of their baked treats - cookies, turkish delights and brownies. I think Vivien B sums it up best:
"One question, the "take home" cakes were actually "eat on the train home" cakes right?  I'm not sure what was in that jelly cube sweet (blood orange?) but it was delicious!"
PicMonkey Collage3
It was a fun-filled night for all and one that I'm sure has upped our game when hosting soirees at home.
Thanks to Spring and our photographer Andrew Watt.

Yelp's End Of Summer Stunner Elite Event @ Cielo

Posted by Aaron

On Monday night, summer went out in style thanks to St. Louis Elites and their wonderful plus ones. Yelpers came out to Cielo in their finest cocktail attire and bid farewell to the hot summer sun. What better place than the eighth floor of The Four Seasons backlit by the St. Louis skyline!

After arriving, guests were allowed access to three signature drinks crafted by Cielo mixologist and restaurant manager, Corry Cuff. A special thanks to Jim Beam for sponsoring our event and making these cocktails come to life! Guests had their pick from No Clouds In The Sky, Basil Hayden Old-Old Fashioned, and Pineapple-Basil Smash. Anita K, "really liked these choices!  I even tried a small sip of the old fashioned and liked it more than I thought I might." Three free drinks? Three times the fun!

What’s a rooftop cocktail party without a DJ? Mark M put the “stunner” in this summer party.  A great tune always helps those drinks slide down a little smoother.

Guests were spoiled by the spread of passed appetizers. The bites included jumbo coconut toasted shrimp, cheeseburger sliders, potstickers, and artichoke fried goat cheese balls. Lorraine N raves about the artichoke and goat cheese balIs, "They were my favorite. I mean who doesn't like a good goat ball?" Cielo kept the eats coming all night long but you can’t forget dessert! Amy’s Corner Bakeshop showed up with a scrumptious array of sugary treats. Amy and her husband came out themselves to dish out these treats. Guests had their pick of St. Louis’ native gooey butter cake, good ole’ pretzel cookies, and decadent chocolate mousse. Lizzy L "loved the pretzel cookies by Amy's Corner Bakeshop, which apparently just opened up a few weeks ago." Yelpers love a good sugar rush!

This smoking hot party goes down in the books as my very first Elite event as the St. Louis Community Manager! I want to give a special thanks to everyone who came out and partied as well as our vendors and venue that made it happen.  A special thanks goes out to Brea Photography for documenting this monumental moment. For the full set of photos, check out Yelp’s Flickr Page.  To read the event reviews or add to the list, head over to the event page.

I'm already looking forward to the next one! Until then...See You On Yelp!

Let's hear it for one of the best burger joints in town! Smashburger’s newest Colorado Springs location invited some lucky elite yelpers for a tasting round of 8 different dishes ranging from burgers and fries to salads and chicken sandwiches before the restaurant had even opened its doors to the public for a SMASHing Yelp Elite Event. "

"First," exclaims Robert T, "the hospitality could not have been better. The owner and the marketing folks were great at welcoming us and walking us through the menu." He even "had a very nice chat with the owner about his philosophy and commitment to bring good food to that part of town."

Smashburger walked us through their exciting menu with a one-on-one tasting with the Smashburger staff. Along with a taste of every burger on the menu, lucky elites were privy to an appetizer assortment of Smashfries, Sweet Potato Fries, and fried chilis. Jessica T wraps up the juicy-burger filled evening pretty nicely: "This was also an opportunity for me to try something from their secret sides menu: fried green chilies! I knew about the fried pickles on the secret menu, but the fried green chilies are my new favorite because I don't know anywhere else you can have them. I finally tried their Smashfries as well: rosemary, olive oil and garlic, and they were spectacular.  And as always their sweet potato fries were delicious too.  The frosty mugs for my New Belgium 1554 was a nice touch. Burgers + beer = dining love."

Check out what the reviews are saying about the bountiful burger spread, as well as the incredible Smashburger staff. Want in on the Yelp elite action? Zürich Elite Event: Kaffeeliziös

Posted by Simon R

Yelp's Walking Tour Of Italy At Spuntino Wine Bar

Posted by Stephanie

Yelp Elites didn't have to board a plane this week to get a taste of Italy; they just had to head to Spuntino Wine Bar and Italian Tapas in Clifton. With cooking demonstrations and various vendors on site offering up tastes of cheese, gelato, fish, pasta and select Italian wines that perfectly complimented every flavor, Yelpers got not only their foodie on, but their learn on as well.
The "Marinated Tuna Crudo" was Thomas W's favorite. "This dish is an Italian take on a seared ahi tuna. They topped the seared tuna with EVOO and chili peppers and pair it with a super tasty roasted lemon aioli and basil. A perfect combination of flavors." Meanwhile, Emma G was impressed on how "ridiculously friendly" the staff was with "providing us with lots of information on the preparation and background of the food we were sampling. I enjoyed knowing that the tomato sauce on my plate contained wild boar hailing from Boonton." You gotta love it when Yelpers help each other, and Lor A gives it up to Pasquale R "who alerted us to the amazingness of the gelato...and boy were they correct. I could eat that gelato every day of my life. A favorite flavor? All of them!" This only touches on some of the amazing fare served up.

It was a wonderful evening filled with fine wine, delicious tastes, lots of love and wonderful people; we can't wait to return. Check out all the reviews and don't forget to check out the pics thanks to BC Exposures. Thank you Spuntino for being such a welcoming (and delicious) host.

Elite Event: Tea, Yoga & Martial Arts

Posted by Anne

Tea, Yoga and Martial Arts?
Yelp, we can!
At the Chimosa (Chi for China and Mosa from the Portuguese name for Taiwan: Isla Formosa) 10 happy Berlin Elites had the chance to make a one of a kind experience! Being welcomed with a Matcha Latte, take off with tea cocktails either with rum, wodka or sake and inbetween have some lectures in tea, yoga and martial arts - "all in all simply amazing" to say it with Kifah A!
Many thanks to the wonderful Chimosa Team, the trainers and Jing and Yi-Chung for this great introduction into their homemade philosophy!
Thanx a bunch also to one of the best iphone photographers @Logopaede - those pics rock!

Evento Elite "Degustazione Francese" a La Brasserie

Posted by Kristina

English Version

The Florentine Yelpers this time got have a taste of France in the heart of Florence at La Brasserie in via dei Macci. Georgette J presents the event like this: "A wonderful night surrounded by fun yelpers in a really neat setting. You know they mean business when you arrive to see a guy dressed in a striped shirt, beret carrying a baguette - this was no 'scherzo!'".

Col france 5

"We sipped champagne and munched on filled baguettes, escargot (snails) and the fois gras while dessert was a medly of beautiful macarons and eclairs - yes I was absolutely in a foodie-induced heaven". She also loved meeting some new Elites.Col France 6
All the Yelpers couldn't get enough of the escargot, even if in the begging lots of them didn't want to try it. So with some flying here and there, the ones we ate where very good. The service was impeccable and at every serving we had a full explanation about the ingredients and recipe.

A big thank you to al the staff of La Brasserie, and to all the elegant Yelpers! You can see all the photos here, read the reviews here and see who was there on the thread.

Posted by Lolo R.

Normally, going back to school is paired with bad mood, feeling restless and general tiredness. But getting back to the routine does not have to be necessarily a bad thing. Actually, Teresa A thinks that "going back to school does not have to be hard, as going back to the Yelper-routine is just great. We were fortunate enough yesterday night to celebrate it in Donde da la vuelta el viento, in a very lively meeting full of new and regular Yelpers". That's the way we celebrate things in Yelp Madrid: with an awesome dining experience and a good mojito in our hands, to cheer up the evening!

Collage 3Yelpers were treated with a "traditional and flavorful food, as your grandmother's delicacies". Mercedes, one of the co-owners, was in fact trained by her grandmother in the art of cooking, and as Pablo C states "you know how grandmothers are: they always push you to eat a little bit more until you get the dessert. An amazing leche frita which was just like my mother's. I love leche frita!". But, as Rosa G remembers, there were many other tapas worth to try: "mini-hamburgers, tempura veggies, chicken fingers with homemade tomato sauce, Spanish omelette, hummus... and a delicious guacamole!". She also has nice words for the staff, as there were tons of people but "everyone remained calm and kept fixing drinks, picking up plates and glasses and taking out more food. Amazing!".

Collage 4But José Antonio P also noticed that the place was spacious and comfortable, while he was falling in love with the "fresh and tasty" mojitos. Those were so good that Ana C is thinking in including them in her food guide pyramid!

Do not forget to leave here your impressions after the event, take a look to the pictures and follow us on Facebook and Twitter to be informed about our next events. Do you want more? See if you have what it takes to be a member of the Elite Squad!

See you on Yelp!

Yelp Goes Gatsby - Yelper Party!

Posted by Scotty

Last Saturday night, members of the Yelp Charleston community came out to Woolfe Street Playhouse for the biggest Yelp bash of 2013 – Yelp Goes Gatsby! Guests were encouraged to enjoy light fare from four local restaurants, plus lavish libations from four unique alcohol vendors. While we wet our whistles, DJ Vu Tran and DJ D Chuck kept things lively, spinning tunes from the top balcony. We briefly interrupted the crowd for Dance FX to perform a Gatsby inspired number on stage. This shin-dig was free to all guests who RSVP'd on Yelp and made it out to the playhouse that evening. Donations were collected at the door, and also by "cigarette girls" mingling through the crowd to help support the Village Repertory to continue their creative performances for years to come.

Welcoming a line of Yelpers down the street, a red carpet ran along side the old Meddin Bros. meat packing plant, which has now been converted into the marvelous Woolfe Street Playhouse. Walking inside felt as though you were being invited into Jay Gatsby's personal residence. The venue alone is already the perfect setting for this Gatsby inspired get together, but it would't be complete if we didn't take things over the top. We called in Event DRS and JMC Charleston who supplied all the feathers and frills to add the glitz and glam to this one of a kind space. Charleston's newest creative space, The 827, provided the artwork of local artist Neti to display throughout the front lobby.

Blog DecorParty

Party goers showed up hungry and immediately went straight for the food tables. Ted's Butcherblock was handing out generously sized Wagyu Beef Sliders with Garlic Shoestring Fries. Bon Banh Mi served up a plate of Bun Cha which is a rice noodle dish packed with veggies, house made pork meatballs, and Vietnamese sausage. The Barbeque Joint was slinging Pork Sliders partnered with their gooey Mac n' Cheese, while Locals Bar rolled out their Tobo Sushi Bar. Along with their fresh rolled Competition Roll and Pacific Roll, Yelpers were treated to a side of their off-menu Wasabi Slaw.

Blog Food

What better way to get a party started than to add a little giggle juice… or maybe a lot? New Belgium Brewing covered the brews with eight different bottles and two draught choices including their highly sought after Lips Of Faith series. To keep your brew safe and cold, they were live screen printing koozies for guests to wrap their beer in pride. Prohibition wouldn't have been the same without moonshine, so we brought in Evol Spirits to create a list of cocktails including the Snow White, Dr Evol, and Evol Mule. Additional offerings for those looking to get up close and personal with this gluten and sugar free spirit were Evol on the rocks or an Evol shooter. Charleston born Wine Awesomeness was in attendance as well, uncorking four decadent bottles and pouring them all night. They were offering a ten dollar credit for anyone in attendance to be used on their website too. Voodoo Lounge luckily put bartender Caroline to work for some of her famous infusions. Typically only available at Voodoo in Avondale, Caroline's Pecan Bourbon and Pumpkin Pie Vodka shooters were introduced to the outside world.

Blog Drinks

Right at the peak of the party, the music came down and brought the lights with it for an unprecedented performance by the amazing Dance FX. This custom performance was a collaboration between Daft Concept Choreographer Jamal Tisdale and the Executive Director of Dance FX Charleston Jenny Broe. Their creation erupted on stage with a precise and seductive performance ,that Jay Gatsby himself would surely have considered to the bees knees, leaving the crowd screaming for more. Later in the evening, a couple Dance FXers gave in to the crowds requests with an impromptu break dance challenge causing additional explosions of applause.

Blog Dance

Capturing all the action and fantastic fashions with those fancy photo boxes and movie cameras were Brittany and Morgan of Focal Fox, and Andrew Walker of Rogue Wave Creative Development. Patrick Hall Weddings put together a creative take on your everyday photo booth allowing guests to take their own photos and immediately view them on a large screen behind them.

Blog Party 2

Hundreds of Yelpers had a big night on the town learning about local businesses and supporting the local arts. Almost everyone in attendance was dressed to impress with their flapper style and dapper digs. Two folks were even awarded best dressed guests of the night scoring some exclusive Yelp schwag. Everyone else was welcome to take home their custom mason jar mugs and and additional yelp goodies. At the end of the night, CoPilot Designated Drivers was on hand offering discounted rides to get guests and their rides home safely.

Yelp Helps Manhattan!

L (1)

A whole lot of warm and fuzzies are making the rounds thanks to two heartwarming nights of honoring local non-profits with Yelp Helps at Wix Lounge in Chelsea. By day, Wix Lounge is a co-working space building top notch websites for all sorts of businesses both big and small, but by night, it was transformed into a Mecca of great food, seasonal adult libations, and enough philanthropic do-gooding to fill your karma tank to the brim. Yhcollage1

The two night affiar celebrated the act of giving back to the local NYC community by way of rubbing elbows with some of our favorite 501c3s who mixed, mingled, and schooled the Manhattan Yelp Community on their inspiring contributions to folks in need throughout The City. The many upstanding NPOs on night 1's "Get Fedorable For A Cause" included Charity: water (devoted to bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations), Ambassadors For Sustained Health (building community centers to fight disease and poverty... empowering poor communities through health and opportunity), 3 Day Startup (building entrepreneurial capabilities and cultures on university campuses), Amigos (An organization with more than 30 chapters across the U.S. providing leadership and community service opportunities for young people), Star Learning Center (providing one-on-one tutoring to low-income students in grades 2-12), The Blue Card (the only national organization in the United States whose sole mission is to help needy Holocaust survivors), Hot Bread Kitchen (increasing economic security for foreign-born and low-income women and men through valuable baking and culinary education), Life Vest Inside (dedicated to spreading kindness, helping people recognize their potential, and building self-esteem), Agent Of Change (a full service firm specilizing in mangaing and producing events in the non-profit sector), and Surfrider Foundation (dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans). Phew! And That was just night 1!Yhcollage2

Night 2, "Yelp's Sock Hop To Support NYC," we were back at it with more non profits; Project Istwa (dedicated to the promotion of self-empowerment, awareness and self-expression amongst Haitian youth through the use of photography), Stupid Cancer (empowering young adults affected by cancer through innovative and award-winning programs and services), Essential Theater Group (an artistic community nurturing the creative development of actors, singers, writers, directors, dancers, musicians, and designers), City Harvest (helping feed more than one million people who face hunger each year), Family To Family (dedicated to pairing families with enough to share with impoverished American families who have profoundly less), God's Love We Deliver (prepare and deliver nutritious, high-quality meals to people who are unable to provide or prepare meals themselves due to illness), Blissful Bedrooms (transforming the personal spaces of young individuals who are wheelchair dependent and highly reliant on others for activities of daily living), Health Corps (nationwide movement toward a new generation of healthy young people founded by Dr. Oz), Project By Project (social entrepreneurs focusing on issues relating to the Asian American community by raising public awareness, volunteerism and capital), and Sweet Generation (an online custom bakery increasing access to arts education for children by providing an alternative fundraising platform). All that good sounds inspirational just reading it - imagine being there in person!Yh collage 3

But it wasn't just non-profits on display over the last couple of days - an array of notable nibbles set up shop within the confines of Wix Lounge as well. Xavier S called Eight Turn Crepe's (FB | Twitter) Lychee Valentine with slivered almonds, raspberries, lychee, strawberry rose custard cream, and whipped yogurt the "highlight of the night." According to Allison C, "House of Cupcakes (FB | Twitter) made the Red Velvet purist in me quite content." Mitch E likened the spicy offerings from Glaze Teriyaki Grill (FB | Twitter) to Hope Solo; "A beautiful kick, tasty but powerful." Mike C enjoyed snacking on Pretzel Crisps (FB | Twitter), "especially the spicy Buffalo variety!" Allison M was down with the mushroom empanadas courtesy of Nuchas Empanadas (FB | Twitter). The sausage and mushroom pizza from Pala (FB | Twitter) "tasted exceptionally fresh and decadent" according to Ingrid S. David R enjoyed his run with Press Tea (FB | Twitter): "The sandwiches were tasty, the scones were really good, and the tea was super interesting." And by unanimous decision, the new Maple Glazed Pecan and Sea Salt varietal from Kind (FB | Twitter) were a home run. Yhcollage4

It's not a party without booze - so Heartland Brewery (FB | Twitter) was on hand with new seasonal brews like their Pumpkin Ale (which was a huge hit), and Delivery.com (FB | Twitter) supplied Wines Of The World for folks with a grape laced buzz in mind. Yhcollage5

Of course, Yelp Helps couldn't have been possible without the fine folks at Wix Lounge! We were able to raise almost $2500 for our participating local charities, and without Wix, none of this would have happened. If you're in the market for a stunning new website that's super easy to manage, be sure to check 'em out, stat!Yhcollage6

We've got reviews and photos a plenty - Czech 'em out! Also, if you want to learn more about the Yelp Helps non-profits, feel free to click on their links above to learn more.

Yelp Toronto Backs That Craft Up @ Paintlounge

Posted by Evelyn W

Things got messy when forty fabulous Elites took over Paintlounge for one excellent night of indulgence and masterpiece making, lovingly named Yelp Backs That Craft Up. But you don’t have to take my word for it, just ask Janna S, this was her "favourite Elite Event of the year! They're always wonderful but adding paint to the Yelp meet mix maximized the megafun!"

Paintlounge Collage

Three delicious pizza options from our friends from North Of Brooklyn fueled our artistic fires, noted Martin S: "A wonderful spread of gourmet pizza..." Deelish.

We washed Toronto’s finest BK pizza down with many varietals from our besties at Barefoot and lots was on tap, too. Erdinger from Mclelland, and Christina, our beer maven taught us well.

Beer wasn’t the only thing we were schooled in. The crafts. Oh the crafts! Thanks to the lesson from our pals at Paintlounge Toronto’s Elite Squad was transformed into a raging room of Picassos, Manets and Kahlos.

Keep artin’ around, Toronto!

Yelp Honolulu's Passport to Kailua!

Posted by Emi H

Honolulu Yelpers got a chance to take a "road trip" out to the Windward side of the island for Yelp's Passport to Kailua! Lucky guests (and their +1's) got to experience some of the best that Kailua town has to offer from a laid back kick-off party to fashion crawls there was plenty to explore in our friendly neightboring town.

We kicked things off with a CMYE party at The Grove! Yelpers and guests enjoyed bites of braised beef short ribs, warm brussels sprout salad, and prosciutto and caprese topped flatbreads. The beer, wine, and signature cocktails kept everyone smiling and mingling. They got their groove on with tunes by DJ Globerson and jumped into the Photo Ops photo booth to capture their fun filled memories!

Next up 50 lucky Yelpers visited Oeno Winemaking to sample locally made and bottled wines. While guests sipped their reds and whites they nibbled on grapes and cheese platters, smoked salmon bites with Greek yogurt. Yeeps also enojoyed complementary burger sliders and quesadillas provided by Kailua Town Pub.

After all the indulgence it was time to kick our Yelp butts into gear with a workout at Egan Inoue's Fit Body Bootcamp! Yelpers were whipped into shape by trainers Kimmie & Corie. Yelpers felt the burn as they did set after set of burpies, push ups, jumping jacks, and more!

PicMonkey Collage.jpg

A night of photo-hunting fun awaited our lucky Yelpers at Whole Food Kailua! Teams of Yeeps were let loose in the store Supermarket Sweeps style as they searched high and low for local products that our cunning clues led to! The winning team was presented with a Whole Food gift basket containing all the goodies they had just tracked down! Guests then enjoyed sips of Maui Pineapple sangira and Aloha Lager beer out on the lanai along with bites from Chef Alycia of Whole Foods Kailua catering.

PicMonkey Collage.jpg

Yelp's Girl's Night Out Fashion & Cocktail Crawl brought out 100 lucky ladies to experience some of the best retail therapy Kailua town has to offer! Featuring one night only BOGO deals, party bites, and cocktails these Yelpy ladies were definitely the VIPs of the night!

 GNO final.jpg

The penultimate Passport to Kailua event was an intimate Chocolate & Beer tasting at Madre Chocolate! Guests sipped on six varieties of beers while tasting chocolates, got a behind the scenes look at the chocolate making process, and spent time chatting & catching up with one another!

PicMonkey Collage.jpg

Wrapping up our 10 day adventure in Kailua town we channeled our inner Downtown Abbey and settled down with a nice cuppa tea. However this was not your grandma's tea party! We Yelpified things up a bit withseriously competetive BINGO games and sipped on freshly brewed pineapple-coconut black tea and a champagne-raspberry white tea. Yeeps nibbled on a sampling of sweets while begging the BINGO gods to please give them a B-9 and heckling one another after each move.

Yelp Glasgow's Pakora Passport launch @ Mother India!

Posted by Briony C

Yelp Glasgow has now launched its Pakora Passport! We kicked it off with a super-sized party at Mother India. There was more demand for spots than we could fit into the cellar, so the 70 lucky Yelpers who made the guest list arrived at 7pm to be greeted with a glass of prosecco.

PicMonkey Collage 1

Shortly after the Yelpers arrived, Briony C announced the arrival of the first pakora of the Pakora Passport! With that, Mother India delivered freshly cooked, cripsy pakora to the guests - chicken & mushroom, fish, vegetable as well as a vegetarian haggis & potato pakora.

PicMonkey Collage 3
As Leanne R said, there was 'not a spot of grease in sight and light, crispy batter!' Just the way pakora should be!

Joseph "the P is for Pakora" P reviewed the event before the pakora had even arrived, such was his love of the night (and thanks to reviews on mobile!). He later edited his review to add - 'excellent beers, tasty wine, great hosting and hospitality and some dazzling sitar skills!'

PicMonkey Collage 4
Fyne Ales came along to the party with two of their finest beers - Jarl and Sanda Blonde. Chris from Fyne Ales was on hand to answer any questions - and it was confirmed by Yelpers that the beers were a great match for the pakora!

PicMonkey Collage
Also available were wines provided by Matthew Clark Ltd which guests agreed were 'lovely' (Sarah C) and 'tasty' (Joseph P)!

After sampling 4 kinds of pakora, 3 types of wine and 2 different beers, the night came to a close. The Pakora Passport festivities are just starting though - on Monday we're off on our first passport outing. Fancy coming along? Just RSVP here

Read all the reviews of the night here, check out the photos on Flickr and on Facebook and you can find me on Yelp! A huge Yelpy thanks goes to Mother India for providing an amazing venue and delicious pakora on the night, Fyne Ales for their beers and Matthew Clark for the wine. An extra special thanks to Steve the sitar player who provided a great musical accompaniment to the night. All photos are by the excellent Alasdair Watson Photography!

See you on Yelp!

Yelp's Farm To Handle Block Party Rocks Downtown Sacramento!

Posted by Alex L
There are certain essential elements that make throwing a massive block party a success: free food and drinks, two stages of live entertainment, fresh produce, a picturesque private courtyard and a VIP pool area, to name a few. All this and much more came together when Yelp, in partnership with the Handle District, Midtown Business Association, 1801 L Street and the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, threw one juggernaut of a block party this last Sunday - aka Yelp's Farm To Handle Block Party in the heart of Midtown, Sacramento! Even better, the party served as a fundraiser, pulling in close to $9000 for our charity partners WEAVE and Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary!

The purpose of this second-annual gathering was to once again highlight the Handle District and Sacramento's reputation as the Farm To Fork capitol by kicking off the city's inaugural Farm to Fork Week. Lines of eager attendees waited patiently before the entries opened, and in a flash the block of L St. between 18th and 19th streets was filled with around 2000 registered Yelp users and social media influencers.

Farm-fresh produce was naturally the centerpiece of the afternoon, and our produce partner Trinity Fresh came through with gorgeous displays and piles of fresh vegetables and fruits to sample, as well as providing many of the ingredients for the bites that day from local eateries. Twelve acclaimed and highly-rated restaurants, including Aioli Bodega EspanolaBuckhorn GrillCapital DimeMangiaMonsoon Cuisine of IndiaMulvaney's B & LOld SoulPaesanos, Plates to Go, The RindThai Basil Cafe and Zocalo, worked from booths along the street to provide generous tastings of culinary creations from their menus. Additional snacks from KIND Healthy Snacks and Pretzel Crisps were gobbled down at a feverish pace.

Of course, tasty bites don't reach their full potential without libations to pair them with. Cocktails galore were handed out by the beautiful ladies at Sailor Jerry Rum and Buffalo Trace Bourbon Whiskey, wines from R. Merlo Estate Vineyards and Clarksburg Wine Company were the highlight of the courtyard, and full pours of beer flowed freely from CoronaModelo EspecialNegra Modelo and Pacifico. Additionally, the Capital Dime served up over 1,600 White Linen cocktails from their back patio. The designated drivers for the day weren't forgotten about: non-alcoholic beverages came courtesy of Pepsi and Joia All Natural Soda.

With bellies full and thirsts quenched, our guests were able to kick back and enjoy all kinds of entertainment. On our main stage, the 8-member popular local funk and R&B ensemble The Nibblers kept the crowd grooving, although no twerking was reported. On the poolside stage in the middle of the gorgeous residential courtyard at 1801 L St., the reggae and soul-tinged tunes of Island of Black and White were music to the ears of those seeking a slightly lower-key atmosphere than that on the street. Just below the band, three beautiful models recruited by Left Coast Girls passed out beers and posed for photos with Elites as they lounged poolside and drank unlimited Pacifico in the Yelp Elites-only area. If stress was your issue, there was plenty of drool-inducing relief on hand from Bassil Kamas, CMT. And we can't forget two of the afternoon's steamiest attractions - the Sacramento Kings Dancers and free hair services from James Wilkinson Salon

Very special thanks go to Classic Party Rentals and Area Restroom Solutions for providing professional tenting and restroom needs. Props to Sacramento365.com for providing a booth to spread the word about their incredible website. Thanks also to Uber, who allowed attendees to ride in style to the party with free, first-time rides through their on-demand transportation app.

For a visual representation of what went down, scope the incredible photos from two of Sacramento's most highly-rated photo-booth companies, Giggle and Riot (photos) and Perfect Pixel. Their totally free services were one of the event's biggest hits! Our roaming photographers, Asia and Paul McGowan of Photostudio29, were there to capture all the highlights as well. Check out their dynamic stills on Yelp's Flickr page.

Finally, don't take our word for it. Check out this party's reviews!

Until next year!

Yelp SF Elite Put Another Party On The Barbie @ Glaze

Teriyaki in Seattle is as prevalent as pizza in New York and equally rooted in immigrational history. The Japanese first brought teriyaki to Hawaii and the west coast in the 1920's, including Seattle. After WWII, when interment camps were closed, Japanese-Americans resumed their businesses, which boosted the number of Japanese restaurants in Seattle.

In the 1970's and 1980's, Korean immigration in Seattle increased by over 400% and with limited jobs in the area many found work in Japanese teriyaki restaurants. In the coming years, Koreans began to take over, open or buy teriyaki restaurants, offering their own spin on the Japanese cuisine, with a more complex range of over 30 spices and ingredients on average, typical of Korean cooking.

And now, the Glaze twist. When Seattle native Paul Krug moved to New York several years ago, he realized that something was missing in Manhattan's culinary landscape — Seattle-style teriyaki. His cravings for the sweet flavors of the Emerald City's street food led to Glaze, and now San Francisco's location is open on the corner of Fillmore & Pine.

Elites were introduced to the open kitchen concept, taken behind the bar to get an inside look at the daily made fresh teriyaki. They rolled out their menu, from spicy teriyaki ribs to the wild caught Washington salmon, along with beers from Ninkasi, Lagunitas & Kirin. Wines from The Other Guy wines of Plungerhead & The White Night. Add on fountain sodas from Jones, fresh baked cookies from Bummzies, and whole coconuts, Elites were treated.

"Overall, the event was so much fun. I got to meet a bunch of fellow Yelp Elites and drink and eat my heart out! It's safe to say that I was sufficiently full by the end and I think I'd definitely go back to Glaze. I liked the fact that there were no +1's invited because it felt a bit more intimate and allowed everyone to meet new people. Thanks for putting on an awesome party, Yelp!" Cheers to you Priya G.

Thanks to the Glaze team, & hosts Ian & Jesse!

Five sexy star reviews here.

With a teriyaki glazed moustache, see you next time,

Jon A

Yelp Miami Pours It On: Battle III

Posted by Johnny Todd

The final battle had arrived. Yelpers and mixologists alike were curious to know who would be the final entrant in the Yelp Pours It On finale. With plenty of Tropical, Jalapeno and Cocoa Tanteo at the ready, warriors and observers made their way to the tony southern city of Coral Gables. It was time for Real Housewives and craft cocktails!

9918398576_fd114df069_b 9918408126_2c049b8143_b 9918412416_b5ef2c83ec_b 9918448744_7be21f559c_b

Starting the evening off, Sebastian Silva channeled his best Christina Aguilera and made a Dirty Tanteo — a naughty blend of olive juice, infused herbs and Angostura bitters. Bulla Gastrobar was well represented. Showing all the confidence of home-field advantage, Shula’s 347 Grill’s very own Kiah Traverso dazzled the crowd with brûléed grapefruit, Grand Marnier and Pama liquor. She called this devilish concoction the Tantiablo. Despite the use of tequila and chocolate, the Inca Swizzle came charging in from Sushisamba Coral Gables with Juan Gonzalez at the helm. Winding things up on a whimsical note, Bernie Waters from Rose Bar dared the judges not to be impressed by his combo of lime juice, guacamole syrup and jalapeno tequila. If you didn’t see the name ‘Guacamole and Chips’ coming, you might not be cut out for this gig. Proving they were up to the task, judges Jorge Arauz, Allegra Angelo, Nicholas Pena, and Chef Marco Zuccala, sipped, tasted and discussed all things cocktail.

While they did that, guests did the same… but they also ate. Shula’s set out a spread that included Sweet Chili chicken bites, Crispy Ravioli, Spinach and Artichoke Dip, Antipasti bruschetta and Hummus platter, and Fancy Nuts. These savory delights provided the perfect compliment to the spicy drinks being doled about.

But, after a while, the eating was done. It was time for the award presentation. After a hard fought battle, Juan Gonzalez’s unique blend of cocoa Tanteo Tequila, white cacao liqueur (Briottet), lemon, sugar syrup, chocolate bitters, and julienned lemon zests proved to be the favorite of the evening. Sushisamba Coral Gables served up a hit. Alex H popped all the shots you want to see here and guests wrote their impressions here. The finalists have all been named. Who will take the title? You’ll find out at the Finale. Be there.

Halifax Elites have their first date at Darrell's!

Posted by Shannon H

Did you miss us, Halifax?

Yelp has returned to the HRM at last and our first Elite Event together was held at the Halifamous burger joint, Darrell's, who were the perfect hosts to this special night. A Date at Darrell's was my debut as Halifax's new CM, and it was amazing to meet so many happy people! New and Old Elites alike gathered to mix and mingle over burger bites and milkshakes. It was an evening of introductions and old friends.

PicMonkey Collage

Since we were at Darrell's, what better chance to try their much-awarded Peanut Butter Burger! It turned out I wasn't the only newbie to this taste sensation! Colleen B was stoked for the chance as well! "How did you know I've been wanting to try Darrell's since moving here and hearing about their Peanut Butter Burger?  From what I overheard, I think Darrell's converted many this evening."

PicMonkey Collage2

Todd B was one of them. "I shied away from the the burger before because I just wasn't sure, but my reservations were for nothing. The Peanut Butter Burger is so delicious." Washed down with one of Darrell's brand new Oreo Milkshakes, who could complain? For those looking for something with a bit more buzz, Garrison Brewery provided a selection of draft beers to choose from.

PicMonkey Collage3
Let's allow Meghan W to sum this up for us: "I've eating at Darrell's since 1998 and it's always been consistently great. Oreo milkshake, PB burger and original club wraps...all my favs! It's great to be back again thanks to Shannon and the Darrell's staff!"

Darrell's couldn't have been a better host, and I thank them with all my heart for providing such a spread and for welcoming us with open arms. Dan is the man! Huge props also go out to Garrison Brewery for our alcohol, Meghan Peverill for her outstanding photography and to Tiffany N for flying all the way from Denver to help me out with my first event! Read up on the rest of the reviews and be sure to check out these photos!

If you're not part of the Elite squad, don't delay! Nominate yourself or someone else you think would be perfect Elite material.

Until the next bash, my darlings! SYOY!

Kuntoilua ja jäätelöä @ Kuntoklubi Arabium

Posted by Mikko

PicMonkey Collage1

Tapahtuman lopussa odotti palkinto, mikä ei jättänyt ketään kylmäksi. Nimittäin, Kontulan ylpeys, 3 Kaveria jäätelötehdas sponsoroi tapahtumaa herkkujäätelöllään –  makutestissä olivat mustikka-kardemumma sekä vadelma-valkosuklaa makuyhdistelmät. 3 Kaveria -jäätelöä saa valituista ruokakaupoista. Löydä lähin kauppa tästä.

Kiitos kaikille osallistujille, 3 Kaveria sponsorillemme sekä Yelpin luottovalokuvaajalle Rodeon Juha Tuomelle. Kyseisiä kuvia pääsee pällistelemään Yelpin Flickr-sivulla. Erityiskiitos Sarille, Pasille, Miralle, Vesalle ja koko Arabiumin porukalle. Tämä oli upea kokemus! Menkää siis kaikki Arabiumiin antamaan kaloreille kyytiä!

In English:

This Monday a handful of Yelpers were treated to an interesting combination of fitness and icy treats. Health Club Arabium gave us a private class in both kettlebell lifting and Jungle Sport- rope training. After all that hard work and sweating the group had a chance to sit down and enjoy delicious local ice cream provided to us by the event’s sponsor, 3 Kaveria, a small ice cream factory located in the Kontula neighbourhood.

A big thanks to all the participants, 3 Kaveria and our photographer Juha Tuomi from Rodeo. A special thank you to the staff of Kuntoklubi Arabium for making all of this possible.

Yelp's Backyard Bizarre

Posted by Emily C

"Imagine this. Warm sunshine, cook tunes playing and the smell of local delicacies wafting in the air, just waiting to be consumed. If you didn't think life got better; free beer and cocktails." Thanks Liat F. Yelp Dublin's Backyard Bizarre shindig at the Bernard Shaw could not have been described more accurately.

Bizarre 3

Throw in the mix a winged tiger greeting you at the door, alternative Angel cards read by the fantastical Paul Timoney, hilarious reviews by Merciless Margorie Olsen and magic tricks by Foley Magic. Then put yourself at the mercy of Jock Strong & his stunning assistant to win anything from a Magic Eye Book to a Rick Astley record, and boom, bizarre all up in yo face!

Of course it wasn't all crazy - guests were able to ease their way into the day with some smooth coffee from Coffee To Get Her, try one of several blends of herbal teas from Oolong Flower Power Tea Shop, and top it all off with a neck and shoulder massage, all accompanied by the sunny day dub and reggae beats by DJ, Niall Dunne. As Fabian T said; "All extremely recommended if your previous night was out of control..!"

Then there was the main attraction. The Food. The Big Blue Bus served their delicious brand of thin based pizza ('best Emilie A has had in Dublin'), J2 Grill & Sushi wowed the crowd with their 'sushi with a zing', and Staple Foods salad boxes with 'tasty tasty falafel that not only was organic vegan, but oven baked'.

The 'steaming hot pie and mash' from the Pieman Cafe lined the stomachs of the masses, 'really excellent' guacamole and chips came from Tolteca, and some refreshing ice cream samples from Murphy's Ice Cream washed it all down.

And the drink. Oh the drink. The 5 Lamps Brewery seemed to be a 'personal favourite' of most of the beer drinkers. As was the Smithwicks and their newest (and most delish) offering; Smithwicks Pale Ale. Then nice cool Becks in the inside bar for those who wanted to retreat from the sunshine, and 'the new love' of Maire B's life, Zaconey

As if that wasn't enough, everyone in the door was in with a chance of winning a shedload of prizes from local and independent businesses. These included a choice of three t-shirts by Irish t-shirt designers Blu-boy. Brunch and 'reviver' cocktails from Ely Gastro Pub. Signed prints by local Icon Factory artists Aga Szot and Kevin Bohan

So that's it boys and girls. If you were there, no doubt you had a blast. If you weren't, well, you missed out! Keep an eye out on our Yelp event page for more fun stuff coming up soon.

Check out the rest of the photos of the day here, the Scope Media photobooth images here, Metro Herald's take on the day here, and reviews and general wonderings by those who came along here.

Oh and if you got spoilt by all the free stuff, I'd probably click here too. It lists all the discounts and freebies you will get from now on for using your Yelp app to 'check in' at all the businesses who came along on the day.

"The reggae pumping in the background set the tone for an afternoon of chilled R&R the likes of which are usually only seen in tv ads or on idyllic album covers, and oh, how we reveled in it. It was a brief time of well-orchestrated happiness and gone too soon, much like summer itself." - Rashel W

Thanks to the Bernard Shaw for hosting the event, to Dubshot Image for the photos, all the local businesses mentioned above, the fabulous performers and staff, and of course Mr Sun for turning up right on queue.

Keep up to date with future events and happenings on our Facebook or Twitter

Dallas Gives Back With Yelp Helps!

Posted by Heli M.

Sure, summer has ended but it's never too hot for some extra warm fuzzies in Yelp-land! Accordingly, on Tuesday September 17th, Yelp Dallas kicked its first season of Yelp Helps, a series of events aimed at raising awareness of deserving non-profits in the community: Flower Mound Humane Society; Dallas Children's Advocacy Center; Literary Instruction for Texas; My Second Chance; Bully Suicide Project; RAW Dallas; and Team Red White & Blue.

First stop? The  Quixotic World Theatre in Deep Ellum for a party like no other! Louise S took notice of the unique space: "dark, reds, fairy lit, magical. It had a circus, prohibition feel." And it's no wonder Yelpers were impressed. The red carpet was literally rolled out for us at the door!

Guests enjoyed a variety of delectable bites from The Butcher's Son, Quesa-D-Ya's, Rita's Italian Ice, and KRAVE Jerky.

There were no shortage of free-flowing cocktails thanks to the mad skills of flair bartender, Joe Minjares, who whipped up drinks provided by Treaty Oak Distilling, Deep Eddy Vodka, and Saint Arnold's Brewing Company.

And what would a celebration be without a little fun? Yelpers were entertained by The Dallas School of Burlesque and danced the night away to beats of one of the hottest DJs in Dallas, Frances Jaye! While TapSnap and Stephanie Brown Photography were in the building, creating memorable photo moments for everyone (click here for TapSnap photos and here for Stephanie Brown photos).

To top it all off, door donations tallied to a whopping $1,000 for Flower's Fund of the Flower Mound Humane Society, an organization focused on providing care to animals in need. Alice L "got to learn about a lot of the nonprofit organizations around that she had no idea existed. It's comforting to know that in such a large city, there are so many people wanting to help out in every way possible."

Derrick A left noting this as the party "one of the best events he's been to in the Dallas area" and Jarrett C asks "How could this event not be 5 stars? Free food free drinks and you are helping out the community at the same time. Great idea!"

Missed out on our Yelp Helps? Check out the reviews (click here)! Thanks for joining me and partying with a purpose in the most do-goodingest affair Yelp Dallas has seen! Until next time, see you on yelp (SYOY)!

Something WICKED This Way Comes with Yelp London

Posted by Alex Shebar

For a night, Yelp London was feeling wicked.

The classic West End musical was celebrating its 7th year in London (and almost 3,000th show) and they invited some of the best tastemakers in London to a behind-the-scenes tour full of surprises guests, sweets, drinks and one of the best shows in the city.

“The Wizard must have heard my pleas, because a night out visiting and viewing Wicked was at the top of my wish list,” Sean O sang. “Everything about Something WICKED This Way Comes with Yelp was joyous. And getting to meet so many new Yelpers outside the theatre was just the beginning."

Yelpers gathered outside the main entrance of the building, only to be lead through the stage door and right onto the stage. There, waiting for the group, was Louise Dearman, who plays Elpahaba, and Gina Beck, who plays Glinda in the show.

“We got to meet the two actresses playing the witches, who seemed plenty nice” Jihn Shyang Y told us. “It was quite a sight to see them transformed into their respective characters later on in the show. They were almost unrecognisable.”

The two talked to us about their roles in the show and answered a few questions before running off to get ready for the performance (and getting “greened up” for one of them). Although they were both kind of enough to tweet us after the show was over (thanks Gina and Lou!)

Yelpers were then taken on a backstage tour to see the workings of the stage, items and props. “The best part was going through the costumes, because you can really see all the detail, colour, and intricate / quirky designs that go into everything, especially their hats and shoes!” Becky H wrote. “I secretly wanted to try on one of their bubble dresses, but didn't want to get kicked out.”

After the tour, the group was escorted to the private Ambassador’s Lounge filled with champagne, Wicked cupcakes and treats from Choccywoccydoodah. “I was really excited about the show, so I wasn't expecting a back stage tour...and bubbles...and cake...and amazing chocolate...and free drinks!” Josy A exclaimed. “They treated us to prosecco, cupcakes, chocolates and slabs of toffee popcorn covered in creamy milk chocolate. Sugar-rush-joy!”

Finally, the yelpers got the chance to see Wicked, one of London’s most beloved shows, from fantastic seats. Everyone walked off nearly singing, and it was easy to see why.

“This is by far, the best Yelp London event, I have EVER attended. I wish I could give more stars!” Teresa C wrote. “Let me start by saying how AMAZING this night was!!! Many Yelpers in attendance has heard me mention the number of times I have seen the show (never in London though), so for me to be able to walk on a Wicked stage, meet the ladies who play Elphaba and Glinda, see the props and costumes and even touch the Glinda's glitter gown, was out of this world. I still can't believe I was fortunate enough to be selected to attend. This was an unbelievable experience.”

But don’t just take our word for it. You can read all the reviews right here as well as check out all the pics by Natalya Spicker here on the Official Yelp Flickr.

Until next time,

Yelp Phoenix Date Night at Evo

Elites grabbed their loved ones and friends and enjoyed a date night to remember! Throughout the night, Evo spoiled the Elites with a sit-down dinner, live music, roses, tickets to the Arizona Taco Festival and even a palm reader!

While live music played in the background, Elites were greeted at the Yelp table with a long stem rose from Table Tops, Etc and a ticket to the Arizona Taco Festival that’s coming to town on October 19th and 20th. Before the hostess sat them, they were also given a “Yelper’s Bluff” game that had them answer a series of questions with one truth and one bluff and their date had to guess the right answer!

Dates 2

Palm reader

Yelpers were seated by a hostess and invited by Evo to enjoy a sit-down dinner on the house! Elites and their guests chose items from the appetizer, entrée and dessert menu and washed it down with complimentary libations from the bar. Throughout the night, Elites enjoyed dishes (http://evoscottsdale.com/menu/) such as Scallop di EVO, Charcuterie boards with cured meats and artisanal cheese, crispy pork belly, Caprese, house-made pizzas, house-made pastas such as the Bolognese with Pappardelle pasta and NY strip steaks with gorgonzola and black truffles. After stuffing themselves with a taste of their savory items, Elites had a sweet ending to the evening with desserts that included Zeppolini (small Italian doghnuts) , Chocolate Tortes and even Adult Floats!

In between bites, Elites got their palms read from the Gypsy Palm reader courtesy of Brad Zinn Entertainment and Scottsdale Music & Entertainment. A special thank you goes out to Evo for hosting the Elites, Table Tops, Etc for donating the beautiful roses, Brade Zinn Entertainment and Scottsdale Music & Entertainment, the Arizona Taco Festival and especially to the Elites who came to the party! PDXYelp's Bow-Tie & Boa Blowout - An (Unofficial) Feast Afterparty!

Posted by Don Bourassa

What do you get when you combine PDXYelp Elites, local media, food industry folks, local restaurants and a national scale food and drink event? Yelp's Bow Tie and Boa BlowoutThe (Unofficial) Feast After Party! Over 250 of Portland's finest gathered at Union Pine on Thursday, September 19, 2013 for food, drink, entertainment and fun.

Union Pine's fantastic hip inner-SE venue was the setting for this year's Feast after party, and our local food partners got things started off right. Guests enjoyed bites from Smokehouse 21, Tamale Boy, Boke Bowl and ubiquitous Yelper favorite Salt & Straw, as well as tasting samples of Genki Su drinking vinegar! Thirsts were quenched with tasty (and dangerous) punches concocted with Powers Irish Whiskey and Absolut Vodka, as well as the infamous Oatmeal Pale Ale from Burnside Brewing Co. Katie H sums up the comestibles well: "The food was awesome! Yay Tamale Boy, Boke Bowl, Salt and Straw, and Smokehouse 21! Some of my favorite places all under 1 roof. They didn't skimp on the booze either. Fabulous cocktails being handed out! It ain't a Yelp party unless I wake up with a headache the next morning." We did everything we could to ward off your headache, Katie, including offering tasty Vita Coco coconut water in a variety of flavors and even complimentary massage from Brandin Bowen and Rita from Sacral Space! DJ Saltfeend was also on hand to drop beats for the dance floor, as Izzy Ventura snapped pics of the whole shindig.

This event was a huge success thanks to generous support from Summer and Ashley from Union Pine; our fine restaurant partners Smokehouse 21, Tamale Boy, Boke Bowl and Salt & Straw; our fine beverage partners Absolut, Powers Irish Whiskey, Burnside Brewing Co, Vita Coco and Genki Su; Brandin & Rita from Sacral Space; Ed (DJ Saltfeend); Jenn, Jenni and Sarah (my bartenders); Ana, Jenni and Christina; Izzy Ventura; Feast Portland; and of course the Yelp Elite Squad. Don't just take my word for it, though. Read the reviews (and don't forget to leave one yourself!)

Until next time, SYOY!

Yelp Goes Local!

OKC Elites headed to Norman on Thursday to check out Local. The farm to fork restaurant, located on Norman’s Main Street, is known for their fantastic cocktails made with house-made infusions and beautiful decor, including ever-changing art provided by local artists. The restaurant also boasts a shop selling merchandise by local artisans and “Localville,” a supervised children’s area where kids can eat and play while mom and dad enjoy the seasonal menu in the upscale dining room.

The group was treated to fresh crudite and hummus, crostinis with house-made bacon jam, salsa made with Oklahoma cantaloupe, tomato, peppers and onions, a caprese salad and an heirloom tomato bruschetta. Manager Dana told us a little bit more about the restaurant’s menu and concept: supporting local agriculture and ranching and keeping everything as local as possible, right down to the honey on the cheese board!

Blake and Hunter Merritt were on hand to present drinks from their new line of vodka, Prairie Wolf Vodka. Elites sampled The Wolf (Dry Martini), the Dirty Wolf Martini, the Wolf’s Knees (with lemon juice and local honey), and the Thirsty Wolf (vodka soda). Elites were also able to sample Dark, a new coffee-flavored liqueur with no artificial colors or flavoring, which they plan to release this winter; it was quite the crowd-pleaser!

OKC’s Elites are a close-knit bunch, and the intimate setting gave them a chance to catch up with one another. We also had some Yelpy schwag, a few ticket giveaways and a bit of time to plan upcoming events and get-togethers for the fall. What could be better than such a lovely group of people, relaxing for a few hours at a beautiful restaurant with delicious food and drinks?! Be sure to check out all the reviews!

Elite Event Köln - Gesundes 50er Jahre Frühstück

Posted by Olli

Also wenig Kohlenhydrate.

50s and Pancakes

Yelp the place

We see more Elite Yelpers every day. That means, even more who know what it takes to be Elite and even more who know Cologne by hard and know how to share the best tips in town. This month the new breakfast and healthy eating place Protero invited the best Yelpers in town for a healthy start in their weekend.  Bernd L stated "this is the first time lowfat quark is actually amazing!"

Our fresh and brand new Elite Marcus J was agreed "this is absolutely delicous."

With a photoshoot we send our Elites back to the 50s. The guys of Protero will make them look like they have been taken in the 50s. You will be able to see these pieces of art in a couple days on our Elites profile pages.

Jana T noted "with the Yelp glasses you look even smarter." So true.

It was great seeing our best Yelpers in town all together again. You make our events to a true experience.

MD Burbs Elite Squad Local Trivia Contest: The Heat Is On!

Posted by Mike Bishop

This past Saturday MD Burbs Elites dropped into 8407 Kitchen Bar to eat, drink, and think all things local for Yelp's Lush Local Lounge. Mike B (Ms. Doubtfire enthusiast and interm old bay crab queen) greeted folks at the door with news of smooth ginger lime martinis and blueberries up cocktails (blueberry syrup with St. Germain and potato vodka). 8407 Kitchen Bar, having recently gained Responsible Epicurean and Agricultural Leadership (Real) certification set the stage–sourcing the greatest ingridients from local farms and businesses. So local, that even the chef brings in ingredients from him farm to include on the menu. 8407, using predominantly local ingredients, has a menu that changes seasonally. Fresh goes better in life!

Elites got a taste of what Maryland was all about with terrapin and Chesapeake Bay retriever oragami, a lego White House, and of course a grand selection of wonderful bites. Local cheeses with huckleberry compote and duck fat fries with a malt vinegar aioli started them off. Deviled eggs with chicharrones and heirloom tomato soup continued the trend. And, finally grilled chicken sandwiches with onion jam finished the bunch.

Then, the time came for Yelp-ardy, where the sofa lined room became a hotbed for fierce competition. Elites answered from categories like "Yelp Biz Info, MD History, Silver Spring and Produce". The winning team racked up upwards of 14,000 points earning them local treats like Maryland flag socks, an antique Maryland license plate and Maryland flag shades.

A huge thanks again for all the Elites and Yelpers who came out to Yelp's Lush Local Lounge @ 8407; please share your thoughts with us here. Also, thanks to our wonderful Photographer Keon De Roche for capturing such great memories. And the biggest huge thanks to Managing Partner Nancy Mola who worked with us to put on this great event and made sure that local pride flowed like the mighty Potomac!

Yelp's Rock The Yacht in Los Angeles

Posted by Brinny

Yelp's Rock the Yacht this week was full of smooth sailing. Over 20 sponsors were there to please 500 yelpers per night over the two day event.

There was no shortage of fun on this Hornblower yacht that sailed off into the sunset once Yelpers were on board. They also wowed guests with their homemade tilapia ceviche, which Marc G says "The ceviche was fresh and delicious... a perfect summer boating snack." They also offered guests $50 off a cruise.

Lily Darling was definitely a hit with their uniquely flavored macaroons. Shannon S admits, "I literally can't get over the salted caramel macaroons- i can't stop thinking about them they were just that amazing."

Rita's brought a little bit of the east coast west. Ingrid L felt "The pumpkin cheesecake ice from Rita's Ice was divine."

Bombay Sapphire gave lessons on how to mix gin cocktails at home. Jody S shares, "The Bombay Sapphire drinks were awesome while taking a sunset cruise!"

B Sweet wowed the crowds. Raoul O shares: "B SWeet put it down! That bread pudding was just ridiculous. It's truly adult bread pudding; mommy and daddy's dessert. Glazed Donut was the best and the Rum raison was good too."

Segura Viudas had some fun activities and a lucky winner took home 6 bottles each night from their scavenger hunt. Noelani shares, "I think  Segura Viudas  was a favorite amongst our group with their "spin the wheel" giveaway prizes. We all went home with some cute chill-bags   And the little shaped wine taster cup was a bonus."

Pork Belly's Sandwich Shop had Tony L all smiles. "The sliders from Pork Belly's had a soft and spongy bun along with the extra cole slaw on top of the delicious meat, with potato salad on the side."

Sinners & Saints had options galore. Howie C says, "lots of gluten free and non-gluten free desserts: tiramisu, tres leches, peanut butter cookies, oreo brownies, canolis."

Beach Pizza kept the pizzas coming! Elizabeth C shares her fave: "surfer pizza with Thai peanut sauce, chicken breast, bacon and caramelized onions."

  Yacht 4

Rock & Brews had guests all smiles with their pulled pork sandwiches and coleslaw. Nancy R was happy that the South Bay was in the house: "The South Bay was repped by Rock n' Brew and their delicious pulled pork sliders."

The Balvenie was pouring tastes of three different scotches. Boby C was impressed: "Can't go wrong with single barrel 15-year scotch. Yum."

Sapporo was giving out awesome schwag to a few lucky yelpers and copious amounts of beer. Shawna W shouts, "Sapporo - Domo Arigatou Gozaimasu! Lived in Japan for 8+ years so we have been friends for a long time! Cold brew is my friend!" Lets be honest, it's everyone's friend.

Scott Cellars was pouring wines from up North. Brittany R shares, "My favorite beverages of the evening were Scott Cellar's Sangiovese & Cuvee. Peter (the owner) was a great guy with some great wine!"

Krave Jerky had an assortment of flavors. Nelson F says, "Mason jars where you serve yourself, about 6 jars of different flavors. Chewy and full of jerky goodness."

Hamilton Wines where Shawna W "Tried a red blend, forgot the exact type it was the end of the evening but it was smooth and loaded with fruit essence!"

Xtreme Desserts has Nelson F exclaim, "Good Lord these were decadent!  You can't resist these, they're so delicious!  Red velvet cakes and brownies.  Wow. 5/5."

Setlla Rosa was loved by Harmonie T. "The top deck is where I spent most of my time since there was one vendor Stella Rosa wine and photobooth, ample seating, and a gorgeous view of the sunset!

Uber made Sam P a fan: "My favorite table: Uber.  They gave away a $20 credit for first time users and then they showed me how to get another $10 credit for sharing Uber with a friend.  Super cool deal.  Thanks for the ride, Uber."

OurHouse, our charity of the night made Noelani all smiles: "What I REALLY loved about this event was the $5 Donation for the Non-Profit "Our House." Two thumbs up for bringing lots of people together for food, drinks, fun, all while giving to a good cause."

ResQWater hooked Sara S. "The Resqwater was an awesome addition and I was very happy they had a knowledgeable staff member on board to put my mind at ease about how it works.  Good stuff."

I Heart Momo Photobooth had all the nautical props. Roxy H shares, "And lets not forget about the photo booth fun, Complete with an endless amount and honestly quite unique props by I heart momo photo booth."

Alpert Photography  captured all of the unforgettable moments of the evening. See all the photos here.

LA Weekly came out to check out the event and posted a 42 photo slide show here. Thank you to everyone who made this a special evening at sea!

Yelp LV Sings the Brews @ Ellis Island

Posted by Drew

Over the past 40 years, visiting Ellis Island Casino & Brewery has become tradition for Las Vegas locals. From the outside it looks like the typical small hotel/casino, so you might be surprised to find out that it's also the number one brewery in Nevada. Ellis Island goes through more beer than any other distributor in the state and any microbrew you order is never more than two weeks old. Knowledge. Dropped.
Karaoke 2
Besides keeping craft beer simple (no gimmicky names, always under $3 for 20oz), Ellis Island pumps out some delectable eats! Mandi L: "The food was bombtastic! Seriously, I knew they had food but because of how cheap everything is, you just figure it can't be all that good, but boy did I figure wrong. The ribs were so tender and juicy with a sweet smokey flavor bbq sauce. The wings were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, just the way I like them!"

Karaoke 1

Someone had to kick off the karaoke, and who better than local CM Drew A, with a rendition of Etta James' At Last. Jessica M: "He was so bad, it was good." Elites and pals followed up with hits from Third Eye Blind, Britters, Radiohead and Alanis Morrisette, among others. Need more deets on this wild good time? Make sure to check out all the 5-star reviews and photos from the event!

Jacksonville's Elites Rocked the Dock at Freedom Boat Club!

Posted by Allie

It takes more than a little rain to keep Jacksonville's most dedicated elites away from an opportunity to rock out with the dock out! The skies cleared for yelpers to enjoy a gorgeous sunset cruise AND Harvest moonrise on the amazing fleet of boats from the Freedom Boat Club!  With leis around our necks and sportin’ our best Hawaiian shirts, yelpers said aloha (hello) to new faces and aloha (goodbye) to the end of summer, in style, at the Rock the Dock Elite Event!

Rock the dock collage intro

"This wasn't just a restaurant. This wasn't a just wine bar. This wasn't just a sunset boat ride. It was all of that rolled into one. We rocked the dock, we jumped to our hearts content, we enjoyed a night on the river." gushes Daisy D, "With music from Big Jeff and captains ready to take any of us out on the water, it was all around an experience to remember."

We started off with some tasty snacks from Pretzel Crisps, "topped off by HUGE cups of delicious wine from FlipFlop Wines." Steve G. All served up by with a smile by our wonderful bartender, Rae.

In the spirit of our Hawaiian theme, Da Big Kahuna treated us to some pulled pork and rice, and spam sushi! "I was a huge fan of the shredded pork,” shares Anthony H. "It was very tender and moist -- I am craving it as I write this review." And he won’t forget the mini cupcakes from the lovely Lauren, from Lauren's Luscious Bites Catering anytime soon, either and adds,  "The cupcakes themselves were worth going alone."

Rock the dock food collage

Jamming out to the cover tunes from the awesome "Big Jeff", we made our way out to the fleet of boats, and yelped off into the sunset!

Amanda M, "We explored most of Julington Creek and our Captain was hysterical. He even let me drive for a few until another boat came around the bend! The weather cooperated, the temperature was perfect, and as we pulled back in, we were able to watch the Harvest Moon rise. Magic!"

Rock the dock collage 3

There were prizes to be had as well, including a trial boat club membership, the infamous and oh-so-popular "Make Me Yelp" hot pants and of course, some yelpy good schwag.

A huge thank you to all of our sponsors: Freedom Boat Club, Pretzel Crisps, Flipflop Wines, Da Big Kahuna and Lauren's Luscious Bites Catering.

You weren't there and missed out on all the fun? Don't take my word for it, ask Amanda M, who will tell you, "I had the absolute BEST time at this event from the food to the people to the boat ride. Seriously, awesome!"

Check out the killer pics taken by Art and Alex Photography on Facebook and Flickr.

East Bay: Bring Your Own Beret Party @ La Boulange

Posted by Nique!

Berets, striped shirts, faux mustaches and platters of fromage. All the French stereotypes were happily embraced by Elites during "Yelp's BYOB (Bring Your Own Beret) Party at La Boulange de Danville. Sophia Y was especially thrilled, saying "not yet being able to fulfill my childhood dream of visiting Paris, I was excited to know that I could sample French fare right in my hometown!"

La Boulange is a household name in the Bay Area, with dozens of neighborhood locations all around the Bay. The first location was (and still is) on Pine Street in San Francisco, where founder Pascal Rigo realized his dream of bringing the art of French baking to the Bay Area. From simple baguettes to dainty canelles and macarons, La Boulange has been educating palates on French flavor for nearly 15 years

This fête très français showcased La Boulange's happy hour menu, featuring international wines, gourmet sliders and more. They also provided a spread from their catering menu: an abundance of epicurean bites like pesto hummus, colorful crudites, fresh fruit and hearty salads. In Ethan Z's words, La Boulange "went all out to make us Yelpers feel welcome, offering a cornucopia of food and drink...and of course, a broad selection of their signature pastries."  Labocollage1

"Some of my favorites were of the croissant wrapped hot dogs, the array of different quiches, and the chocolate tart desserts," Shannon F swoons. Happy hour was the main inspiration for Amy J, noting "I usually stop at different La Boulange locations for breakfast, brunch or lunch so I'm pretty excited to go back one day for happy hour. When the French flag is up, that means it's time to get happy!"

Read more sweet & savory details on the event review page, and peep the array of enticing edibles (and many a striped shirt!) on our Facebook page.

Merci beaucoup to La Boulange de Danville, their talented chefs and welcoming hosts, ...our berets go off to you!

Yelp Elite Event: Fall Footie Fun with FC Edmonton!

Posted by Jennie

Sunday September 15th was the Yelp Elite Event for September in the City Of Champions! Edmonton, a town obsessed with athletics: From the Oilers to the Oil Kings, Edmonton Rush, the beloved Eskimos and now the FC Edmonton! For 3 brilliant hours lucky Elites and their guests attended a truly sensational event, basked in the glorious September sunshine in a VIP tent right on the sideline of the FC Edmonton soccer match. They ate, they drank, they mixed and mingled with the Club Coach, Owner and President as well as a few players and most of all they cheered on the Eddies as they battled the Fort Lauderdale Strikers!

Amazing SWAG was provided by the FC Edmonton from blue soccer balls to winter scarves with the club colours, as well as a few team pennants. Head Coach Colin Miller delivered a very special pre-game, game strategy meeting on what to expect from the #2 ranked Fort Lauderdale Strikers as well as what to watch for on the field from our boys in black and blue. Then the FC’s owner Tom Fath said a few words showing his love for the game, as did team President, Rod Proudfoot.

Custom game day catering was wonderfully provided by the Sawmill Catering Group. The magnificent buffet spread included salmon, fried chicken, meatballs and 8 different salads and sides. From mid-week meetings, fundraising galas, BBQ’s and Christmas Party, or special events and weddings, the Sawmill Catering has been serving Edmonton for over 25 years!

Molson Canadian and Coors both touting new beers and Strongbow on hand… Talk about a Match made in heaven! Coors Banquet made its debut in Canada this summer and quickly sold out across the nation. It is the recreation of the original Coors beer that was first introduced by Adolph Coors in 1874. Nicknamed the ‘Banquet Beer’ because legend has it that in the late 1800s thirsty miners threw celebratory banquets and you can what the beer on hand was! Then there is the new Molson Canadian 67 Sublime; a premium light beer with a hint of refreshing Lemon-Lime flavour and only 67 calories! And for something a bit different, there was Strongbow Hard Cider. Named after Richard "Strongbow" de Clare, the Earl of Pembroke, he was legendary for his skill with the bow and arrow. With a namesake like that, it’s no wonder day started strong and ended in a win!

A huge thanks goes out to everyone involved who helped to make this day so very special. The FC gained a whole lot of new fans that day... And our ace photograher, Demetri Giannitsios of DemetriGianni Photography caught each one of us texting, tweeting, instagram and yelping just how much we loved it!

Until Next Time...See You OYelp.

Cheers, Jennie M. Your Yelp YEG CM!

Yelps Girls Only Event @ Van Den Engh

Posted by Emilie

The host for the night was Neel, the owner of Van Den Engh, she taught us amazing tips and tricks. Amongst others she demonstrated a long and detailed fishtail braid (your's truly was lucky enough to be the guinea pig) and also how to make Lauren Conrad curls with a straightening iron.

Melbourne Elite Event: Yelp's Supper Safari

Posted by Tresna

Well we thought we couldn't top last month's Elite Event, but turns out we can! The Publican Group were kind enough to host Elite Yelpers for a Supper Safari, visiting not one venue but three! Rather that say it ourselves, this month we're letting Elite Yelper's explain what happened...

Leisha T: "All week I had been eagerly awaiting the supper safari, the days seemed to drag and Thursday seemed to take forever to arrive. Finally it arrived and dressed up in a leopard print shirt, leopard eyes and a tail I headed out to begin my Safari. I had high expectations for this event, but nowhere in my wildest dreams did I think it'd top the last event or be as great as it was.  I should know by now to expect the unexpected.

We meet at Campari for some cocktails and canapés, which were both divine.  The artistry that went into my cocktail was out of this world.  Thankfully, it was as delicious as it was pretty.  After a brief stay, we were all ushered out on the street, where buses had been organised to take us to our next venue, Mr Mason.

Hugh M: "It's then off in a tour bus, to Mr Mason, to indulge in some French wine, Alsatian pinot gris, and Louis Jadot Beaujolais. I had pork belly, which was awesome, with a root vegetable reduction puree and a scattering of cassolouet. Any excuse for chorizo is a good one. Followed by some grand desserts; 4 varieties of awesome. All the favourites though that are always in line for evaluation."

Penelope B: "At Terra Rossa, the third and final venue of the night, we were treated to was cheese, fortified wines and a cocktail that upon tasting cause me to remark  'so this is what unicorn tears taste like'."

Chris B: "There were handsome men in safari suits (me and Terrence, basically), and Tresna was wearing more leopard print than a Shania Twain film clip. The thing I enjoy most about Yelp Elite events is that everyone gets into the spirit of it and has a bit of fun. On top of drinking good drink and eating good food, it's a great opportunity to meet people with similar (or entirely dissimilar) interests, and to just have a good chat with old friends."

Well we couldn't have said it better ourselves. What a fabulous night! Thanks to the generosity of our hosts and to Photobat for capturing all the terrific photos on the night. For more stories about what went down, check out the reviews!

Yelp Perth Elite Event: Five Bar's Spring Menu Launch

Posted by Laura

Last night over 50 Yelpers gathered at Five Bar for our Elite Event where they launched their Spring menu.

Five Bar believes that good beer should be partnered with great food in a comfortable environment, and who are we to disagree with that?

With this in mind, Five creates a distinctive feel, throughout the venue’s numerous spaces, by offering laid-back but sophisticated beer, wine or food experiences. Their beer selection has to be one of the most extensive in Perth and is paired with an interesting and ever-changing wine menu and great food. Five23Andy from Five Bar enlightened attendees, walking us through the history of the venue, from the initial concept to how the venue is still evolving today. Steve from The Feral Brewing Co was also on hand to educate us in the ways of their award-winning brews, bringing with him four equally delicious, but very different beers; the multiple award winning Hop Hog, The White Witbier, The Golden Ace Golden Ale and the Smoked Porter.Five2Feral is a proudly family owned and operated hand-crafted microbrewery situated in the heart of Perth’s premier food and wine tourism precinct – the Swan Valley. Steve gave the Yelpers a good understanding of Western Australia craft beer and the large part Feral are playing in the market.

Feral’s Smoked Porter was a bit of a favourite with Yelpers, though it was like trying to pick a favourite child between all those great tasting beers.

Who could forget our favourite food offerings of the night, the Banh Mi and the coriander, avocado and chevice? If the feedback on the night and reviews are anything to go by – these were the top picks! It was all rounded out by the Lyonnais onion tart, prawn toast, beetroot and pearl barley salad and banana split. I’m sure the Yelpers will be back pretty fast to try these dishes again. Five23
A massive than you to Andy and the whole team at Five Bar for creating a cozy setting, smiling service and top notch food for this Spring Menu Launch Elite Event. A huge thanks also to Steve from Feral for taking the time to tell us about Feral’s craft.

Check out the mouthwatering photos and read the reviews.

Until next month!

Yelp London Plays Secret Ping Pong!

Posted by Alex Shebar

If there are only two hot things in London right now (and there aren’t, there are many, but let’s just say that there are), it would be, without a doubt, pop up spots and ping pong.

Yelpers had the chance to experience both with the granddaddy of the theme, Pop Up Ping Pong, at a secret location for a Saturday night party. It was Yelp! Plays! Ping! Pong! and it was glorious.

“When the event said it was a secret West London location, they really meant secret - I totes struggled to find this place and I started to panic. Order was restored once I finally saw the Yelp balloons,” Teresa C stated. “As soon as I walked in, I heard that Sauce DJ's music pumping, that smell of #BRGR grilling, ping pong happening, and drinks all around. I wasn't even sure where to start.”

Hidden away in a former post office turned beautiful event space, filled with marble floors and skylit ceilings, the Yelp party lightly raged throughout the night. There were tables set up by the PUPP team for people to play on and delicious burger smells (and actual burgers) from #BRGR everywhere. “The slider from #BRGR was perfect! It was juicy, meaty and tender,” Riza R told us between bites. And don’t forget the Momofuku crack pie for dessert!

All that playing and eating worked up a mighty thirst. We had that covered. Guests started (and ended) their evening with a delicious cocktail from Jameson Irish Whiskey. Bubbleology was doing three versions of their bubble teas (complete with the fun machine to cover the cups). Hannibal Brown sampled fantastic wine from around the world and shared their wine knowledge. And there were event beer and shots from Pistonhead.

Alas S “was a particular fan of that and the crazy ‘Crude Oil’ shot. What was in that? Liquorice and chili?” Yes, indeed it was.

And if all that wasn’t enough, Sauce DJ kept the house literally rocking with an amazing mix of old and new tunes. “Amusingly, neither the husband nor I actually got the chance to play ping, but that didn't matter. It was absolutely a ton of fun,” Laura K wrote. “Food and drink that was both sizeable and continued throughout the whole of the event; a good amount of seating; fab music (loved that DJ!); and the place wasn't overcrowded, yet felt buzzy and exciting all night long.”

Alex L highlights it best: “Great venue. Great dranks. Great music. Great food. Great fun. Great people. That would be 6 stars if I could rate it that high, but I guess 5 starts will have to do.”

But don’t just take our word for it. You can read all the reviews right here as well as check out all the pics by Elad Itzkin here and Jebson John here on the Official Yelp Flickr Page.

Until next game,

Yelp Orlando Elites Party with their Pups @ Pammie's Sammies

Posted by Colleen Burns

Located off the "beaten path," Pammie's Sammies is a quaint and quirky little restaurant serving big, fresh flavors. It's always breezy on otheir patio for al fresco dining with your family, friends, and pets. We sure experienced the breeze and gathered with many Yelpers and their furry four-legged friends.

"Great event! The food was delish (I could've eaten a whole tray of the chicken salad puffs by myself!), the musical trio was entertaining, making for a fun casual atmosphere on a gorgeous evening, and the dogs roaming around were fun to watch. Pammies Sammie's staff was very welcoming, making sure everyone's plates and glasses were full, and Pam walked around personally checking on everyone." - Pam H

PicMonkey Collage

The humans had an array of Pammie's tasty bites including Tomato Mozz, Grizzly Bear, Chicken Salad Puff Pastries, and Mini Veggie Wraps. We jammed to live music, mixed, mingled and noshed. We raised money supporting The Women's Center at the Coalition for the Homeless and the A.P.E.S. - Animal Preservation & Education Sanctuary. We were also swooning over the A.P.E.S. baby Gizmo, a 7 month old siamang. He was adorable, vocal and overall too cute for words so check out this video

Sit 'n Stay Pet Cafe, a mobile pet treat and ice cream truck operated by sisters Lauren and Kathy, had their truck on site with some complimentary goodies for all the fur-babiesThe products are made with locally sourced, organic, natural and humanely raised/harvested ingredients. All packaging is biodegradable or compostable. It was truly a treat for pups and their owners. Rover.coman online community where dog owners can find local dog sitters who will provide real homes for their pups while they're away, was on site to chat with everyone and gave away a ton of goodies!

"This elite event was awesome- I got to bring my 'dogter' along! I loved seeing everyone elses fur-babies! All of them were chill and relaxed, laying down listening to the music and eating up the t-r-e-a-t-s! The live entertainment was great, playing cover songs of the top 40. They did a great job. My furbaby liked it so much she kept on literally yelping along." - Bunny N

PicMonkey Collage2

Pretzel Crisps were on had providing yummy treats and awesome goodie bags! Pet Portraits By Mimi was painting live showing off her extensive skills featuring fur babies!

"What sets this apart from other great YE events in the past can be summarized by a great quote (albeit out-of-context, in this case) from Orwell: 'Four legs good!'  Dozens of fur babies, and not a fight in sight!  In truth, the humans enjoyed it so much because they could see that their 4-legged 'children' were having such a good time..." - Paul L

Yelp Oslo trener: BOYAH! Selvforsvarskurs @Tojang Kampsportklubb

Posted by Tine

[Don't understand Norwegian? English below!]

PicMonkey Collage2

Hashtags: #flau #kjennerikkesinegenstyrke)

[STOP SCROLLING! This is the English section:]

It's unfortuneatly true that darker times are approaching at a rapid phase. Sure enough, it means cozy times by the fire place , but we also know that it means that you can't see who might be lurking in the bushes, and that even if you wear a reflector, it can be quite scary to walk home alone.

Fortunately, Oslo's Yelpers can now leave this fear at home, because we had a self defense class at Tojang Kampsportklubb. Here, we learned some tricks we not necessarily would have thought about ourselves. For example, did you know that shoes with high heels very easily can be turned into the ultimate defense weapon? We s(hoe)ly didn't!

PicMonkey Collage0
Self defense is all about using the least amount of power, to inflict the most amount of pain. We paired up and gave the floor to instructor Parviz. Now, it was time to defend us against each other.

There is of course a possibility that Juan B doesn't wear the previously mentioned type of shoe too often, but never the less did he find the class just as useful if he is to bump into the wrong crowd on a Saturday night: "Yelp events with an educational twist is something we always value, and this time it was a self defense on the agenda. Great to know in the world of today, so this really 'kicked butt'." Jokes aside, Cathrine W says, "The instructor went thoroughly through several excercises that I think most people would need if something bad happened to them in a dark alley (knock on wood!)."

PicMonkey Collage
Lucie B (down right) says with a smile: "Great opportunity to fight with my husband!"

Trine K said: The instructor took great pride in his job and explained in detail how you should strangle someone correctly, and then how you could kick someone's behind if they tried to strangle you.

(And this, dear friends, is something yours truly can confirm from personal experience. Tori L admitted that Trine K and herself deserve "a tiny minus for, as we were joking around with Tine and managed to through her into a wall." Blood, Yelp and Tears, as they say. Luckily there was more, for what is a Yelp-event without anything to eat? We remembered that we all used to be friends, and put the violence aside. Tojang had made sandwiches and in addition we had fresh fruit and smoothies from Odd Langdalen Frukt og Grønt to round the whole evening off in a peaceful manner! Rachel S loved the "really yummy strawberry ice cream smoothie things which was much appreciated after having my wrists bent backwards!"

We'll leave it at that, only adding Faranak Ms well chosen words: "Super fun night, but most importantly super useful! I feel a lot safer in the streets now!

A big thank you goes to Odd Langdalen Frukt og Grønt, who gave us lovely fruit baskets, Beauté Adorée that supplied us with the giftcards, and of course our fearless photograper, Jin Phung.

Can't get enough?

BOYAH! Watch out if you meet us in a dark alley, but until then... SYOY (See You On Yelp!)

And some Saturdays are greeted with an over-the-top brunch provided by Northern Italian cuisine - NoRTH. 25 lucky Denver Elites were invited for an exclusive meal launching the restaurant's brand new brunch menu. Yelp's Endless Summer at Mosaic Cafe in Minneapolis

Posted by Annie D

Though the chilly weather was an unfortunate reminder that winter is indeed coming, Twin Cities Elites spent the evening pretending summer will never end at Yelp's Endless Summer!

This patio party was hosted by Mosaic Cafe, a casual Longfellow restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. They also have one of the most beautiful patios in the land under a multi-story mosaic mural, so it provided the perfect backdrop for one last taste of summer.

Mosaic's chef rolled out a sensational series of sliders including their grass-fed Farmhouse burger, housemade vegetarian Moonburger, Kadejan chicken torta and throwback Waldorf salad with all the trimmings. (TIP: When you make the trip back, do not miss the baked rosemary fries. Life-affirming.)

The neighbors across the street at Harriet Brewing stopped over to pour Elites fresh pints. Harriet will be hosting their annual Rauchfest on September 28, so make sure to check that out.

Party favors weren't quite enough, so more than a dozen lucky winners went home with special Elite Squad seating at the premiere of Amaluna by Cirque du Soleil on September 26!

If you still aren't convinced that this event was hot enough to fry an egg, you're welcome to read the rave reviews on Yelp (or write one yourself if you were there—just remember to hold off on your reviews of the participating businesses until you've had a more typical customer experience). Make sure to check out all the party pics on Flickr (thanks to the lovely Jenna Klein Photography!).

A huge thanks to the incomparable people who helped put this party together—you are THE best. A special gracias to Bobby Patrick from the Gypsy Lumberjacks, who serenaded the party goers with an acoustic set. And a big thanks to all the yelpers who came out to celebrate these awesome Longfellow businesses!
