Earth to Twin Cities! Our July Elite event blasted off this week with one of the most unique squadrons of local establishments to (star) date. Indian burritos, local experimental beer, rocket ships
? Affirmative. Anything goes at Yelp's Space Jam
Light Grey Art Lab
opened last spring in Whittier as a hub for art, education and collaboration. And they were kind enough to invite the Yelp Elite Squad in for an exclusive sneak peek of the Station Zero exhibit before the rest of humankind!
(opening to the public on July 19th) pays homage to the forgotten sci-fi classics from the 1950s, '60s and '70s
with over 80 artists revamping and redesigning the cover art from actual vintage sci-fi novels. As you might imagine, the resulting show is fairly epic.
In addition to the alien artwork, the wonderful new street food purveyors from Hot Indian Foods
trucked over with savory samples from their subcontinental fusion menu of Indurritos
(Indian burritos) and more! Nom.
Meghann F was floored by the chapati-wrapped tacos with "tandoori chicken and vegan chana... and the lamb and spinach paneer." So basically, her stamp of approval is on everything. And Alexandra H would moon walk for a look at the recipe for their fries: "Seriously what's the secret to the salty-sweetness? How do I get them to park on the street outside my place?"
Solar flares didn't stop Bad Weather Brewing
from serving up a select smattering of beer, including their hoppy Windvane and summery Migration ales. This inventive (and brand new) brewery focuses on "untethered brewing" with seasonally changing varieties to match seasonally changing tastes.
Special guest mixologists from Easy & Oskey
also crafted two of the finest beverages in the universe, including a special gimlet made with the brand new, local Prairie Organic Gin
(which is hitting shelves right about now). Easy & Oskey is a new DIY line of bitters started by Erik Eastman and Dan Oskey, bartender extraordinaire of The Strip Club. You can buy their kits at South Lyndale, Cooks of Crocus Hill, Heartland and other shops around town.
Rakhi N says, "The booze was delicious. I really liked the Windvane brew the Cobra Kai made with the habanero bitters. Are. you. kidding. me!? Delicious."
hosted an interactive station with Hubble 'scope quality photos (thanks to Light Grey's awesome handiwork on the props) where yelpers could share pictures on their phone and have them printed right on-site!
If you still aren't convinced that this was a Space Jam to be reckoned with, you're welcome to read the rave reviews on Yelp (or write one yourself if you were there—just remember to hold off on your reviews of the participating businesses until you've had a more typical customer experience). Make sure to check out all the party pics on Flickr (thanks to the lovely Jenna Klein Photography!).
A huge thanks to the incomparable people who helped put this party together—you are THE best. And a big thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate on a hotter-than-hot summer night!
