Boston Yelpers Hop To It at the Yelp Helps: VolunBeerfest!

Posted by Damien S

There are things that don't work well together: oil and water, vampires and werewolves, Charlie Sheen and anything. And then there are those magical couplings that have forever changed our way we view the world: chocolate and peanut butter, Captain & Tennille, and now, service-powered nonprofit organizations and sweet, sweet local brews. Ladies and gentlemen, volunbeering is real. And last Sunday, the Arts at the Armory rocked with both for the first ever Yelp Helps: Hop To It! VolunBeerfest.

Hop1

Hundreds of Yelpers stormed the Armory (donations in one hand, tasting cups in the other) for two sessions full of chances to taste New Englands finest craft brews while discovering some of the lesser known nonprofits seeking passionate volunteers from the Yelp Boston community. Armed with anything from candy pong to floor puzzles, Bigfoot books to belly dancers, 20 volunteer-hungry NPOs entertained and informed the masses, shining a light on their mission and how YelpHelpers can lend a hand. And how 'bout them local brews? Compostable cups never emptied with a sweet sampling of seasonal suds. Taps up to the following NE icons for keeping the crowd hopped up: High & Mighty BeerJack's Abby BrewingClown ShoesJohn Harvard's Brew HouseRising TideBaxter Brewing CompanyWatch City and Boston Beer Company. Somerville's own BantamDowneast Cider from Maine and Farnum Hill of NH provided hard apple juice and natural sodas from Spindrift sated non-alcoholic tastes.

Hop3

The sweet sounds of Surf's Up, Spicoli! and Hornography serenaded with Deltone echoes and Carly Rae Jepsen covers, while a Snack Stop loaded with KIND granola, Pirate's Booty, Taza Chocolate and Pretzel Crisps maintained a beer balance. And for those feeling a bit crazy, Q's Nuts dished savory to sweet samples of his (soon) world famous, hand-crafted legumes. A live Twitter wall tallied Yelpers' Choice of participating NPOs, naming each session's benefactor on the big screen (#yelphop2it, Tweeps). Congrats to Black Cat Rescue and Boston GLOW for getting top nods!

Hop5

And to top it off, VIPs went home with a goodie bags stocked with Cuppows, Yelp pint glasses, tickets to ArtsEmerson performances and more! Tatsu snapped the pics you know and love and the party's five-star reviews are rolling in. Didja go? Write your own! Forever in plaid,
