Nearly 500 Yelpers Enjoy A New Twist On A Stampede Tradition
What do you get when you cross Yelp Calgary with some stampeding and local hotspots? 5 distinct breakfasts for nearly 500 Yelpers–complete with morning cocktails!
Last week, Yelp Calgary’s Banff Ice Vodka Pancake Parties popped up at Melrose Café & Bar, Chef’s Table at the Kensington Riverside Inn, Mango Shiva, Design District Urban Tavern and Casel Marché to bring a foodie twist to a long time stampede tradition–the pancake breakfast!
Fact: Banff Ice Vodka is distilled right here in Calgary. That’s right! We even have local vodka!
Chef Mark Hakim at Melrose Café & Bar kicked us off with some creativity for the ideal Sunday hangover cure with his Red Bull birch syrup and lemongrass buckwheat pancakes complete with saskatoon berries. Jennifer L exclaims, “The pancakes and sausages were tasty!! I guess that explains why I had two plates. MMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMM!” And the lychee puree and cranberry martini? “It was totally chic...I loved it!”
On Tuesday, Yelpers were treated to the infamous lemon ricotta pancakes, bacon and morning mimosas at Chef’s Table at the Kensington Riverside Inn. Chelsea K sums it up, “This breakfast was a pleasant change from the norm, with no lineup, real cutlery, and grown-up tables with napkins and chairs.” Is your inner pancake chef up for a challenge? Get out your pots and pans, this recipe’s been outted. Save some for us!
Mango Shiva put an international spin on breakfast with its first ever Stampede offering, dosas! “Light enough for a morning meal but still flavourful, from the curried dosa to the tapioca pudding,” this was one pancake party Bonnie H couldn’t miss… especially when paired with chai tea and Mango Slings. And yet again, no street eating for these Yelpers–with the choice of patio, lounge or restaurant seating, we had the place to ourselves!
Sometimes, breakfast just tastes better at night. That’s why, on Thursday, we descended upon the Design District Urban Tavern’s late night pancake breakfast to help raise funds for the Bill Beattie Endowment Fund in support of Leukemia research! Four different spiked punches, many servings of in-house smoked bacon and pancakes later and zombified Yelpers on the loose (local upcoming children’s fundraiser Apocalypse Wars was on-site with a make-up artist), guests left happy and satisfied.
Our perfect pancake peregrination ended Friday at Casel Marche where flax pancakes from Highwood Crossing Farm, lamb merguez (sausages) from Cassis Bistro, Kicking Horse coffee from Vie Café and freshly squeezed OJ from The Fresh Squeeze greeted guests from this local, organic market. The highlight for Cassandra D was the “yummy lamb sausage. Simply scrumptious and wow! The flaxseed pancakes were huge and extremely tasty.” Filled with gourmet pancakes and AM drinks doth a happy Yelper make!
Special thanks to Jay del Corro from The Aimless Cook and Vijay Desouza for getting’ snap happy with us. Thanks for the photos!
Until next time!
