Yelp Cincy Shops Local with a Golden Ticket Hunt!

Posted by Alex Shebar

The holidays are a time for many things: joy, warmth, a little stress forgiveness, but above all … adventure!

During this last holiday season, Yelp Cincinnati premiered its first ever Golden Ticket Scavenger Hunt to promote local shopping and the official Yelp Shop Local Pledge.

Over 70 independent Cincinnati businesses in 13 different neighborhoods partcipated, giving people a chance to search, shop and win hundreds of dollars worth of local prizes if they found that coveted golden ticket!

The rules were simple: a golden ticket was placed secretly in a business and clues to its location were sent out through Yelp Cincy's Talk Threads, Twitter and Facebook. Six tickets were hidden in Cincinnati and six very lucky people discovered their locations:

PaigeMPaige M (Found in The Spotted Goose)

Rachel G (Found in Knickers XY)

Ann Z (Found in Picnic & Pantry)

Kara C (Found in Atomic Number Ten)

Ryan B (Found in Dean's Mediterranean Imports)

Robert W (Found in Robeling Point Bookstore)

While treasure hunters were searching for that golden ticket, they also could fill out their official Yelp Shops Local passport. Once they got eight businesses to sign it, they could enter in to win a raffle for even more prizes … and we had one of those winners as well:

NatalieNatalie N was the lucky one!

Of course, this whole adventure was mixed in with a series of other amazing events, encouraging people to eat and shop local. We made cards for local businsses owners, tried new food, donated toys, ate sweetscelebrated Cincinnati’s history (with drinking of course), and so much more. Check out some of the amazing photos from these events, taken by Anamedia and Lux Per Diem Photography:

All in all, this was the happiest of holiday seasons. On to 2012!

Yelp Detroit Elites Get Into The Holiday Spirit!

Posted by Annette

On the 13th day of December the Detroit Yelpers gave to me--tasty holiday cookies in 30 vari-e-ties!

Ah, yes! Last week Yelp Detroit Elites gathered at Torino Espresso + Bar in Ferndale to spread some holiday cheer and raise each others glucose levels at our first ever Tis the Season Holiday Cookie Exchange! Elites and their guests provided us with nearly 30 different cookies/treats from snickerdoodles to biscotti, salted chocolate chip to rice krispie treats.

To help those cookies go down Torino hooked us up with tasty cups of coffee spiked with either Bailey’s or Kahlua. For something a little more savory we also snacked on Tornio platters—their signature plates of chef chosen cheeses, meats, and accompaniments like olives, honey comb, reduced balsamic vinegar, and more!

To continue the holiday cheer we also gave away holiday themed prizes like copies of Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer and Christmas Vacation on DVD, a chocolate Trivial Pursuit game, and the most fancy of all—a white chocolate Santa beard and moustache!

Since there was far too many treats to eat on site guests were provided adorable holiday take out boxes to fill with sweets to take home and munch on throughout the coming days. A decorating station with plenty of glitter, bows, and stickers also allowed folks to amp up the holiday spirit by fancying up their containers.

If you made it and want to share your thoughts feel free to check out the reviews (and write your own) over yonder. Photos can be found here for your enjoyment. As always, thanks to Doug Coombe for snapping those lovely memories and a hundred thanks to Torino Espresso + Bar for hosting such a fabulous evening.

And so we end a most amazing 2011 here in Detroit. Filled with delicious snacks and drinks, rock and roll, bocce, wine, karaoke, culture, and the Greatest Show on Earth. Happy holidays to all and here’s to many more memories to be made in 2012!

SYOY in the New Year!

Portland Yelpers Spike Up The Holidaze With Yelp's Ice Cream Social @ Salt & Straw!

Posted by Don Bourassa

Oh the weather outside may be frightful, but that didn't stop 60 of Portland's elites from heating things up at Yelp's Holiday Ice Cream Social at Alberta's top ice cream spot - Salt & Straw! With such a cozy, intimate space, we decided to roll 'elites-only' (sorry +1's - you'll have to read along in envy) to this event which, as Kari M notes, "took it to another level. Adding booze to some of the best ice cream in town?" That's a win-win.

Picnik collageSM

The event was split into two hours, the first starting at 4:30 and the second at 5:30. At both the smiling, sweater-bedecked elites were met with single-origin Cacao drinking chocolate spiked with locally-made Lavishmint Vodka from NW Distilling. As Melvin T can attest: it "was really comforting and heated my soul." Once warmed up it was on to chocolate-Lavishmint milkshakes and Ninkasi Otis Oatmeal Stout beer floats. No, not root-beer floats. Actual BEER floats. In fact, party-goers even got to sample Salt & Straw's soon-to-be-released Ninkasi Otis & Fudge ice cream. Aaron W considers it "the best of their beer ice creams so far. The stout is present but not overpowering, and the sweet fudge stays controlled for a pleasing experience." And if floats and shakes and cocoa were not enough, Yelpers were welcome to sample their way through S&S' long list of unique flavors (think balsamic and strawberry, maple and blueberry, etc).

Picnik collage 2SM

Of course Festivus got the best of us with holiday gift-exchanges and food-drive raffles! For each item of food brought to the event, Yelpers got a raffle ticket to win prizes like 22oz Ninkasi Stout bottles, light-up rotating nativity regalia and fun kitchy craziness. Sweet surprises from the blind gift exchange included a spatula (much needed, claims the giftee), crafty wares, booze, a five-pack of beer and more! All told we donated over 140 lb of food to the Oregon Food Bank which, as Don D describes, "made the gluttony feel a little less gluttonous!" Hear hear!

A sleigh full of thanks and holiday wishes to Kim and her insanely welcoming team at Salt & Straw; Meghan and the fine folks from NW Distilling/Lavishment Vodka; Morgan and the team from Ninkasi Brewing; Hilary B (no Matt, she's not the new intern); to Ron, Melvin, Michael, Roman (these boys each brought multiple bags!) and all of the folks who brought such an incredible amount of food for the Oregon Food Bank; and of course to the Yelp Portland Elite Squad - the best Elite Squad ever!

Did you go to the event? Where's your review? Looking for some photos? They're here. Didn't get a chance to catch the event? Head on over to Salt & Straw - there's a taster spoon waiting for you.

Until 2012,

Yelpers Get Nauti and Nice in Half Moon Bay

Posted by Abby Schwarz

Forget Santa, South Bay-Peninsula Elites are what's up this December... and they proved it with an amazing, nautical-themed holiday party this weekend.

Nauti Collage 1

Mavericks Event Center, a former boathouse-turned-beautiful waterfront event space, was the host for shindig. Over 100 guests dressed as sailors, pirates, jellyfish and mermaids came to celebrate the holidays in Bay Area stye. Half Moon Bay Brewing Company provided delicious finger foods such as crab fritters, tuna tartare and "beeramisu" (yes, tiramisu made out of beer). The Brewing Company also provided tastings of their delicous beers, including their Hefeweizen and Winter Ale. To compliment all the delicious offerings from the venue, ZU Bison Grass vodka whipped up several batches of holiday punch and Sailor Jerry served up spiced rum and Coke in tin cups. For those who had to be DD's, there was also Cascal fermented soda as well as Illy Issimo espresso drink.

Nauti collage 3

Elites got cozy and warm at the outside deck's firepit and heat lamps, while admiring the amazing view of Half Moon Bay. If that wasn't enough, PartyBooths was onsite so everyone could ham it up for the camera.

Nauti collage 4

Before heading home, Elites and their guests got to take homemade goodies to-go, courtesy of a pre-arranged cookie exchange. The array of treats was a little overwhleming - everything from giant red velvet stuffed with cream cheese frosting to "Reindeer Droppings" to candy cane sugar cookies. Everyone "oohed" and "ahhed" at their fellow yelpers' talents!

Nauti collage 5

Andrea B had this to say about the party:

"Seriously one of the best YEE I have ever been to. The Mavericks Event Center is an AWESOME venue. The views from the patio were amazing.  The staff serving up all those yummy appetizers and free flowing beverages were super friendly.  Loved the photo booth, it was simple, fast, and great keepsake from the event."

Nauti collage 2

Read all of the reviews here and check out all of the event photos (party pics and photo booth images) on the Yelp Flickr page. All in all, it was a beautiful and relaxing way to end 2011. The 2012 Squad will be announced in early January and we're looking forward to all sorts of UFC events in the year to come!

Happy Holidays and SYOY!

Yelp DC's Brilliant Brunch @ Kellari Taverna!

Posted by Kristin Mink

Yelp DC toasted a whole year's worth of yelpy awesomeness this week at Yelp's Brilliant Brunch! Over 120 Elites and plus-ones blinged out their Sunday best and indulged in Kellari Taverna's full prix fixe brunch, while body-painted models and waitstaff kept things colorful! Keon D noted, "As soon as I stepped in, I knew it was a huge celebration - Yelp went all out!"

Tons of dazzling delectables tempted hungry yelpers, from spiced lamb burgers to house-made pasta to fresh-baked pastries. Antonio M fell hard for the "perfectly poached eggs (with all sorts of gooey yolk goodness hiding inside) seated atop a piece of lamb or on generously sliced salmon," while Theresa W loved the "well-seasoned meatballs" and Rachel M couldn't help "drooling over the succulent shrimp salad." Nate H simply realized, "'Unlimited mimosas' is my favorite expression!"

When they weren't busy striking a pose with the paint-adorned models, guests added glam to their own get-ups with glitter tattoos by Let's Make A Face! The "shiny black dragon" on Steve L's forearm has "attracted so much attention," he's now wondering, "Maybe I should make it permanent?" (We vote yes!) And of course, the end of the event found both the naughty and nice getting down with DJ Hazzard like Santa wasn't watching!

Big thanks to Kellari Taverna for being such fun and fabulous hosts! Just like Abegail A, we'll "definitely be back for brunch!" Kudos to the amazing Adrienne Mills (Figure Photos) and Kim Reyes (Kim Reyes Makeup), who teamed up to paint the blue-and-gold model and Kellari Taverna's servers. High-fives and hat tips to the fantastic Barb Scheeler (Let's Make A Face), who painted the multi-colored model and did all the glitter tattoos.

Be sure to check out the rest of the photos by Rolux Photography on our Flickr page here, and read or write your party reviews here

Yelp's Totally Bazaar @ The City Market

Yes Indianapolis, Yelp's Totally Bazaar. 1,100+ guests at the holiday shopping party of the year proved that Indianapolis has taken The Yelp Shops Local Pledge, and had a yelped out time while doing so. The host -- The City Market -- lead by Homespun: Modern Handmade & Sun King Brewing, welcomed 60 local businesses coming together under one roof for one night, for one goal: To shop local and Yelp on.

We here at Yelp believe that if we must shop, then we must first relax. Thus, Sun King Brewing's gift to the guests: an early release of their Cowbell Porter (yes... More Cowbell was called for). The City Market's all-Indiana beer bar -- Tomlinson Tap Room -- tapped keg after keg. Beer flowed like Santa down chimneys... all night long. Between beers and gift buying... guests were treated to massages by Specific Kneads and Blue Wren Studio. Hoosier Momma Bloody Mary's, New Day Meadery and Mass Ave Wine Shoppe provided complimentary sips while offering up their perfect concoctions as perfect gift options.

Yelpers filled their Totally Bazaar totes with gifts from local stores to handcrafters and non-profits: Bad Ass Glass, Bets & Mags, The Binding Bee, Bjava Coffee, Bobaloo!, Bookmama's, TheBrickShirtHouse, Busty's Fun Bags, Chatham Home, Chef JJ's Back Yard, Cordial Kitten, Crimson Tate: Modern Quilter, Curly Pigtails, Get Lathered, Green Illuminations, Hayes & Taylor (with Pattern Indy), Homespun: Modern Handmade, Iha Clothing, IndySwank, Jackie J Jewelry, Little Green Boutique, Liz Alig Clothing, Luna Music, Minx Vintage Fashion & Furniture, Nurpu River & Mountain Supply, Nurture, Oberweis Dairy, Opposite Of Far, People For Urban Progress, Pogue's Run Grocers, Project Endure, ReFind Originals, Sara B Jewelry & Metalsmithing, Staci DeBolt Pottery, Studio AMF, Tina Lynch Wilson Art, TreeHouse Herbs and Vouched Books: An Independent Press.

Hey yelpers, get off your feet and eat! A crepe from Three Days in Paris? A po' boy from Papa Roux? A Bistro Box from Chef JJ's Big Green Bistro perhaps? Or The Flying Cupcake's treats? How about... Circle City Soups, Circle City Sweets, U Relish Farm's savories, Smoking Goose truffle bologna, 240Sweet's Artisan roasted marshmallows, Just Pop In's craft popcorn, Natural Born Juicers, Bjava coffee or, as beer is food, a Sun King beer? No yelper went home hungry, or thirsty.

The Naptown Roller Girls rolled through the party with Winter essentials: yelpsticks, Yelp ponchos and gloves. Speaking of essentials... what's a party without prime music? A-Squared Industries very own Andy & Annie Skinner were on hand for the entire four hour party making sure ears & hearts were full & pumping. Solar Flare Photo was running the Yelp photo booth while Kelley Jordan Photography was taking snaps of the action.

An epic-epic-epic evening for all involved. Five Stars to you Indy yelpers for taking the pledge to shop local, following through with it & partying while doing so. The Five Star party is celebrated with five star reviews here.

Didn't make it? You have a handful of hours left to finish your holiday shopping and every one of these local businesses are ready & waiting for you.

Until next time, Yelp On!

Yelp Cleveland Parties On The Naughty List!

Posted by Cara

'Tis the season to be nice and check your list twice. But sometimes it's necessary to self-gift yourself some fun and that's just what Elites did this past Wednesday at Yelp Cleveland's Naughty List party!

Our gracious host, Lion On Lorain, helped us say the perfect adios to 2011. Not only did they close down the pub for our shindig, they pulled out all the stops with a comfort food spread of epic proportions! We're talking about house-made chips, corned beef hash sliders topped with fried egg, hash browns and coleslaw, homemade sweet potato tots, pulled pork and fried chicken sandies and deep fried ice cream sandwiches! Kaitlin D swooned, "Those tots are gonna get them famous one day. And fried ice cream sandwiches? I definitely didn't expect those (neither did my arteries, but so worth it)."

What's an Elite holiday party without a few, ice cold spirits to keep the season bright? North American Brewing Co gave us the gift of complimentary Pyramid Snow Cap Winter Warmer pints and variety packs full of Magic Hat bottles to enjoy. Even self-proclaimed beer snob, Christina P approved: "I had never tried Snow Cap before, and I was a fan!" And trust, the liquid courage was needed for the naughty photo booth! Stefanie C "loved taking pics with Mz. Claus! We were naughtier than she was. I think we frightened her a bit."

Reindeer games were in full effect with drunken Twister and Candyland stations. And who says you can't booze and craft simultaneously? Let's just say we have many-a-multi-tasking yelpers who loved the homemade holiday ornament table, like Cami T: "Whoa! Crafts in a bar! I'm sold!" And it didn't end there. Elites and guests put their pens to work and anonymously submitted their most naughty and nice moments of 2011. And without further a-do, here are the results. (Drum-roll please!)

Top 3 Naughty and Nice Moments - Yelp CLE 2011:

1) At the Browns vs. Rams game, I coordinated about 20 people to move a Rams fan's car.

2) I tried to expense a lap dance for a coworker in Vegas.

3) I don't think about sociology in class... I think about my bow-tied sociology instructor wearing nothing but the bow tie.

1) I listed to my boyfriend's taste in music, like Phish!

2) I helped a stroke victim learn to speak again.

3) I was at the grocery store and the lady in front of me was short $20. I told the cashier to put it on me and the lady was so grateful that she cried! It made my day.

big, jolly, thank you once again to our beer sponsors, Magic Hat and Pyramid for providing us with delicious seasonal brews and the staff at Lion On Lorain for making this party one of the best ones, yet! Russa W thought it was "Crazy-Crafty-Boozy. Adorable." And Will S agreed, "I've already been to 4 holiday parties so far, and this, has been by far the best one."

Be sure to check out the rest of the photos from the event from our photographer extraordinaire, Ackey+Z Photography and don't forget to you read/write your party reviews here

Keep it naughty (er... nice) and SYOY!

Long Beach Yelpers Had A Very Vampy Holiday

Posted by Hazel Q

...or one could say that they had a bloody merry Christmas. Either way it was a night to be immortalized at Alex's Bar in Long Beach last night. Elite yelpers donned their vampiest best and celebrated with holiday spirits, like Bulleit Bourbon cocktails. Or as the very informative bar menu put it: "Bourbon + _______ = Happy." Who needs algebra when you've got math skillz like that?

Feeding the ravenous crowd was the ever-so-amazing Chris from Mr. Hot Bunz. Yes. Mr. Hot Bunz. (Not a stripper, but wizard with bacon wrapped hotdog magic.) Complete with pineapple habanero sauce and even a serrano pepper, Mr. Hot Bunz made sure not a soul in the house went hungry. Even the vegetarians got hooked up with some vegan chorizo! While everyone's sweettooth was taken care of by the fine folks at Sweet Embellishments.

But everyone knows that no Yelp Elite shindig is complete without a rad photobooth to tie it all together. Enter Capture Fun Photobooth. Don from Capture Fun just launched this awesome business, and started with a bang (and a flash!) at the party last night. While the hardest working man of the night, resident Yelp photog, Albert E made sure not a single second went undocumented.

You can read all of the reviews of the event on Yelp, check out Albert E's photos on Flickr, and the Capture Fun Photobooth pics on Facebook. It's been one rad year here in Yelp OC (and LBC), and we can't wait to see what 2012 has in store.

A True Bloody Merry Christmas to everyone!

Vegas Elites Seek Elf Help At Petra Greek Taverna

Posted by Misti Yang

With holiday fervor at full blast, Vegas Elites took a Sunday afternoon to seek some Elf Help at Petra Greek Taverna at Tivoli Village, and in case you were wondering, Elf Help means plates of delectable Greek eats, multiple signature cocktails and a little stocking stuffing!

The private upstairs room decked with holiday trimmings set the perfect scene for a mingling and merriment. Between coloring holiday scenes and filling up their stockings, the Yelp crew enjoyed traditional Greek favorites starting with a selection of passed treats including a sampling of dips, Mini Spanakopita, Mini Gyros, Keftedakia (meatballs!) and Stuffed Mushrooms. Then, a real feast began with Petra delivering to each table a plate of tender, marinated Souvlaki Skewers (Chicken, Beef & Vegetable), Saganaki (aka flaming cheese!) and Horiatiki, a Traditional Greek Salad.

Suki L puts it best: "Such an awe-inspiring event for the Holidays and for Yelp of 2011. It was a very delicious place to have our last Elite Yelp event. I'll definitely stop by again for some more Authentic Greek Cuisine!"

Read all the rave reviews, and be sure to peep the pictures on our festive Flickr

Providence Elites Deck The Halls At The Dorrance!

Posted by Hilary H

Naughty and Nice Elites of the PVD gathered for their final party of the year – Yelps Holiday Soirée at The Dorrance – last Thursday evening.  Collage1Elites were escorted in their finest Mandmen apparel "up the staircase and into the mezzanine of decked-out Yelpdom" to nosh on gourmet snacks and couture cocktails that Marcy L describes as "scrumptious and magnificent!" We were treated to a sampling of the best of The Dorrance: the "inventive and abundant" hours d'oeuvres, consisted of sweet potato with caviar, duck en croute, and seasoned ham on a minuscule biscuit that inspired Sarah VM to write poetry. Naughty&NiceCollageWilliam H loved the "beautiful venue – ornate, festive, and plenty of space for a crowd" to stand around with not one but three types of Manhattans and two punches - one rum, the other pico sour - all of which "were plentiful and delicious," in Mark S's book. "This was definitely an evening to remember" for Maura C,  "and a place worth revisiting!" The talented Stacey Doyle was there to capture the magic of the evening on film, so check out more photos on the Flikr stream!Collage2It was a splendid way to end a year of fantastic Yelp Providence events – from hot wieners to white rabbits and plenty o' cocktails in between, we've done it all in 2011! In closing, I'll borrow the words of Marcy L, as I cannot say it any better myself: Happy Holidays to all, and to all a good YELP!

'Twas The Yelp Before Christmas Dallas Elite Event

'Twas the Yelp before Christmas and all through the bar, the event was bumping and way above par. The stocking nametags were displayed all pretty and fare. In hopes the Best Santa Hat title would soon be theirs. For the sensational Sushi Axiom had a surprise in store, the bright and shiny A Lounge had just opened next door!

The Yelpers were cheerful and ready to mingle, while sushi and sashimi was displayed with a jingle. Crafy cocktails were served with a twist. Veev Vodka, Champagne, or Kirin – guests all took their pick! Rolls of raw fish have never tasted better, but then again who would think to have Japanese food while donning a Holiday Sweater!?

Yelpers were all a-glow, but it was these folks that really took the show. But wait, the fun doesn't stop there as postcards were set with some flare. Brave troops overseas are in for a treat, Yelpers that wrote cards for them are so sugar sweet.

Children's Diagnostic Center is our awesome recipent of donated Toys. Boy, our Yelpers sure have some poise! After our Holiday hunger was put to bed and just enough libations danced in our head – only a single tear of happiness by proud by your proud CM was shed. Until next year my friends: I will miss you and for the Holiday and New Year, I wish you all the best.

Please share your stories and pics on the Yelp listing here and stay tuned for what we have in store next year!

Vancouver Elites Have A Cozy Up Pajama Party At 131 Water

Posted by Robin

It may be cold and rainy outside, but Vancouver Elites cozied up in their PJs in Vancouver's historical Gastown neighbourhood at 131 Water Restaurant and Bar on Wednesday night. That's right, "three rockin' floors of pajama-party fun is the best way to party in December!"

"It was a clever plan, giving people plenty of food, drinks, and candy while in our sleepwear, so that we could crawl into bed once we got home, all carbed, sugared, and boozed-out." And carbed, sugared, and boozed-out they were! Annie W has never "come across servers that were so eager to bring me stuff. Lots of nibbles just showed up at our table: Spoonfuls of Chilli, Mini Fish & Chips, Turkey & Veggie Sliders. It was way more food than I was expecting!"

Nicole F "had a glass of Barefoot Shiraz in my hand before I even left the front area, which I followed with a warm boozey Maker's Mark apple cider. SO delicious!" Yumm! "The bar was packed as usual serving warm and traditional drinks," like the warm apple cider from Maker's Mark (thanks Beam Global!), the very timely Granville Island Winter Ale, and some awesome Pinot Grigio and Shiraz from Barefoot Winery. Then Fritz S headed "upstairs and you got your Gingerbread making station with all sorts of candy decorations. Oh man, a fat man's fantasy right there!" Nicole F agreed: "Within 10 minutes of finding the candy buffet with the naked gingerbread men," she "decided this was the best elite event ever."

"Yelpers are hardcore - really hardcore. Who else dresses in pajamas in the middle of December to a party in Gastown?" Evilyn T even brought along a "pink-haired +1 down for her first ever elite event. Hah! Another converted, do I get a door prize for that?" Well… maybe? But like Simon K said, " on a wet and chilly night, somehow this Yelp party was one of the warmest things" of the season. "It was a great way to wind down 2011," and Theresa W "can't wait to see what 2012 has in store for Yelp Vancouver!" And neither can we.

A huge thank you to the amazing and talented staff at 131 Water for an outstanding evening, and to photographer Aziz Dhamani for capturing it all and posting to Flickr. Read more about the event in the reviews found here.

Yelp Miami Celebrates The Holidays From Ocean Drive

Posted by Monica

Unlike, say New York City, where the holidays are marked by snow-covered evergreens, sleigh rides through a grand park, figure eights in a prominent square and temperatures dropping below the 30s, Miami's holly jolly holiday is decked with temperate breezes from the ocean, twinkling palm trees and lows in the 70s. Ask any local Miamian and we'll take it! This past Thursday, to celebrate Santa, 180 Yelp Elites descended upon the historic Hotel Breakwater for Yelp's Naughty or Nice Holiday Party

Santa 2
Located on Miami's famous Ocean Drive, Hotel Breakwater's been known for over 40 years as being part of the original pack of Art Deco hotels and last night, Elites got the first view of their new rooftop, penthouse digs. The hotel opened up both penthouse suites, each one even had an outdoor whirlpool, and treated guests to ceviche from their new restaurant, Nine. Adding to the savory samplings, Bunnie Cakes treated guests to her famous gluten-free, vegan mini cupcakes.

Picnik collage
As Andrea F can attest, "Holly Jolly Yelp Party! This was up there as one of the swankiest locations we've visited and the Breakwater treated us like VIPs escorting us up the elevator to the gorgeous penthouse with a panoramic view of the ocean and South Beach." Making appearances for the crowd, Santa Claus gave every single yelper a hug while the naughty, Sexy Wonders sponsored, Ms. Claus, posed for photo ops with guests.

Picnik collage3

In between bites, guests imbibed SKYY Infusions cocktails and Glenrothes Scotch eggnog and got down to the music curated by Miami's own DJ Haitian Hillbilly! Towards the end of the glittering affair, yelpers got to exchange gifts in the White Elephant Gift exchange! Whether it was a car vacuum or an x-rated bestowal, elites left with high spirits and a little something.

Honolulu Yelpers Celebrate Yelp-Mas At The Dragon Upstairs & Hank's Cafe

Posted by Emi H

Saturday night’s blustery winds and torrential rains were no match for 125+ Yelp Elites (& their +1s) who got cozy at intimate Chinatown bar Hank’s Café and it’s soulful sister, The Dragon Upstairs, for The Grinch Who Stole Yelp-mas Holiday Elite Event

Yelpmas-8057 Yelpmas-7852
Yelpmas-8021 Yelpmas-7897

Never one to be under the weather, Chris M hummed, “when the weather outside is frightful, the party inside is so delightful!” Now that’s the Yelp-mas spirit! And delightful it was. After checking-in with the Yelp-mas Tree, intern Thomas O, Elites warmed up to the live entertainment downstairs with steaming cups of Kim Chee Fried Rice and Grill’T Kalua Chicken Sandwiches hot off of Grandma G’s griddle. Both were a hit, and never too little!

Yelpmas-7835 Yelpmas-7798

Shogunai Tagine treated guests upstairs to tasty Cuban Sandwiches and Fried Spiced Chickpeas, which went well with bottles of Peroni and Blue Moon and the smooth sounds of a local jazz duo.

But a holiday party wouldn’t be complete without the customary eggnog and holiday sangria made with Sailor Jerry’s Rum & Root Liquor. All Kine Ice Cream Truck was on hand to sweeten the deal with bite-sized morsels of Peppermint Bark Brownie Sundaes and S’mores constructed with homemade marshmallows. If Santa had a taste of these, he’d forget the milk ‘n cookies!

Jamila J, Jonathan V and Melissa J are now “living the snug life,” after acing through the Grinch trivia game and walking away with the best-worst gift ever - their very own Snuggies!

However, the real winners that night were the families that benefit from Helping Hands Hawaii, who stopped by to collect the boatload of unwrapped toys donated by Yelpers

'Tis the Season for a Very Merry Yelp Hartford Kickoff!

Posted by Emily

What better way to close out 2011 than with Yelp Hartford's official kickoff event? Hartfordites ventured out Wednesday evening to the historic West End neighborhood to get their martini on at Tisane Euro-Asian Café - a teahouse, fusion restaurant and martini bar all rolled into one!

While sharpening their appetites for future Yelp events, they also scored a taste of Tisane’s finest happy hour apps- artichoke and brie fondue, vegan potstickers, flash fried tofu, smoked chili calamari and the list goes on- these ain’t your typical bar bites!

Yelpers around the city met, mingled and noshed in merriment, while meeting their shiny new CM (me, Emily C!) grabbing some shwag and gettin’ their first taste of that infamous Yelpstick.

From flirtinis to plum sake-tinis, Tisane's vibrant cocktails were a mega hit with Yelpers and their guests, who sipped away at these sophisticated elixirs in between all that noshing, chatting, and ogling over Tisane's festive holiday decor.

Big thanks to Tisane for hosting this rowdy bunch! Here's to an action packed 2012 for yelpers in the Hartbeat!

Manchester Do The Great North West Proud!

Any time of day is a good time for pie, right? Well, Manchester's finest Yelpers and their guests enjoyed an epic teatime feast when the marvellous Fyg Deli served them a variety of Great North Pie quarters hot and fresh from the oven – the perfect antidote to a rainy Thursday.

P1010766 P1010778

P1010761 P1010747

New kids on the Northern Quarter block Fyg, led by the fabulous Eileen and Jayne with skilled help from Nick and Sam, served up a splendid evening to warm the cockles of Yelpers disillusioned by dreary, drizzly Christmas shopping. The food just kept on coming. Pies were plated up for our hungry guests alongside homemade and artisan chutneys, smaller cold cut pies, big bowls of salad and plenty of friendly banter.

And that wasn't all, folks. Showcasing their finest deli counter produce, revellers were treated to samples of cheese, breads and oils, and some simply couldn't resist digging into their pockets and purchasing some unique Christmas gifts from the tempting shelves right on the spot!

P1010750 P1010753

Something was necessary to wash all that tasty food down, and we couldn't have asked for finer than Brewdog Craft Beer. Ice cold, crisp and in three delicious varieties (Punk IPA, 5am Saint and Hardcore IPA), the superb Josie made sure no attendee went thirsty, and the Manchester community absolutely lapped it up.

In fact nobody wanted the party to end... 'Full to the brim with beer, cheese and pies - there was more still on offer which I was absolutely distraught at leaving behind.' Yup, Chris M just had to accept that we all need our beauty sleep this time of year. Shame.

P1010758 P1010781

And that's it for 2011's Yelp Events!

I can't thank everyone enough for such an incredible year of parties, the 10th of which for the Manchester community was this one right here: Brew Ate All The Pies?. Exceptionally big thanks go to the Fyg staff and Josie for making it what Bex T called 'the best event so far'. Jessica H was raving about the 'pies and beer' on Twitter, and the combination went down a storm. Huge kudos also to Harrison for the lovely snaps.

Read the reviews of the event and chat about it too.

SYOY in 2012...

Nashville Elites Mingle With Mummies, Mystery, and More!

Posted by Marcia

Some may say that we were all treated to Christmas a few weeks early this year... An exclusive yet curious group of Nashville Elites were given a very special experience at the Frist Center For The Visual Arts recently. We gathered in the fabulous Frist Center Cafe with Community Relations Manager Emily Harper Beard and Director of Communications Ellen Pryor for some socializin', giftin', and vino sippin' to get the evening started!

387325_290948690943952_170841222954700_820631_369801693_n 378629_290949007610587_170841222954700_820644_1850227890_n

The Frist's docent extraordinaire, Mancil Ezell, led Karla A and the rest of us to the first gallery and gave us an "informative, entertaining, and insightful" tour of the A Divine Light: Northern Renaissance Paintings exhibit from the Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery. Jackie Y was so spellbound by Mr. Ezell that she referred to him as being the "bomb diggity. If you're with me say "mmmmhmmmm." I want to have coffee with him every day! He really made the Frist and an exciting and understandable place to visit! I'm not an art lover, but my god I was excited! I'm not sure if it was his enthusiasm or those badass original frames, but whoa! I actually want to go back to a museum! (We're all together now, say, "Whoa")

We never want to keep things predictable for the Yelp posse, so we switched gears next with the mysterious and edgy work of artist Tracey Snelling's Woman On The Run exhibit. Facinating sculptures of rundown buildings on the outskirts of town showed a keen sensitivity to the psychological tensions and hidden narratives of ordinary life. Lynne D appreciated the artist's "most ambitious work to date - composed of nearly life-sized facades, cardboard cutouts, comic strips, photographs, signs, and videos, accompanied by a soundtrack." The installation creates a cinematic setting for a classic whodunit.

"In case you were getting bored (I'm not sure how), Yelp spiced things up with the writing contest!" exclaimed Tim M. We encouraged Elites to elaborate on the many twists and turns of the exhibit participating in the “Woman on the by Run” novella project. In a separate online activity, participants can help the accused Veronica Hayden assume new identities and find clever places to hide out, and/or answer specific questions about the exhibition—all in exchange for a chance to win a spiffy $100 gift certificate to any locally owned business of their choice as a reward.

Before we entered the final gallery of the evening To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum, we were greeted by a special guest... The Frist Mummy! Our favorite mummy first made a splash with us at Yelp Helps in November by cutting up the dance floor. He's now apparently campaiging for a Yelp 5 star review as he was offering up photo opps and hugs too! You can follow him here.

Aaron F adores Egyptian Treasure as it is "not to be missed. The guys out there will love hearing about the mummification process. The gals out there will enjoy the beautiful mural photos and some of the bling. But everyone will come away wiser and having learned more about Egyptian lore." I'm sure that along with myself, many attendees took advantage of the opportunity of a Yelp discounted rate for Frist membership that evening! Support the arts y'all...

We can't believe that this was the final Elite Experience for our first year in Nashville and love making our yelpers happy. "I'm a big fan of these "classier" elite events. It just feels so... elite. A nice compliment to the earlier symphony event. A great way to close out 2011!" Well Gregory R, just wait until you see what 2012 has in store for us....

Did you contribute your recap of the spectacular soiree? You can do so right here, or just drop by to read the glowing reviews. Perhaps you prefer to peek at some photos? If so, click on this link to see the images that our fantastic photographer Kristin Milner was able to capture.

Much appreciation again to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, their staff, especially to Ellen Pryor and Emily Harper Beard for the ultimate gift of art!

Cheers and have a very Happy Holidays!

Yelpiges x-mas @ Onkel Zozo

Posted by Svenja

Punsch,brownies, presents

'Tis the season to be jolly falalalalalalala… In December the Berlin Elite Squad found its way to Onkel Zozo in Kreuzberg. A little bit hidden at Heinrichplatz the Yelpers dove into the wonderland of Zozoville in Onkel Zozo. A world in which fluffy monsters, furry creatures at the hairdressers, men with giant noses and Little Riding Hood creating her own wolf made from stone. While Onkel Zozo is the second, yet bigger shop of Mateo and Johan, their first shop Zozoville is located in Friedrichshain. Onkel Zozo used to be a white, cold box-like shop, which under the creative influence of Mateo and Johan turned into a fabulous, warm, welcoming paradise for creatures of all kinds.

Shop Yelper

The most difficult part of the evening? That was certainly trying to decide on one, two, or three or more of the prints. Käthe F is picking a picture: "This one is clearly going into my office!" On it is a creature in suspenders and above its head it says "Casual Friday". Well and how could this be a cosy evenign without the right amount of sugar and hot beverages: Café Hilde took care of our sweet tooth by giving us the most amazing brownies one can get in Berlin. Really rich, full of chocolate, sugar and nuts! Ok, a brownie only occupies one hand, so the other hand can be filled with a cup of hot punch, or to be more accurate: Schwedenpunsch. 100% fruitjuice which are prepared after an old Swedish recipe. Especially since a lot of people are struggling with colds right now and counteract with drugs, the Yelpers were happy to hear, that Schwedenpunsch is non-alcoholic. The healthy ones among us just spiced up their punch with Amaretto.

Since this was a christmas-sy evening, we of course had presents. Mateo and Johan hand-picked the presents, which went into a pile of boxes on the top floor of the shop. Some lucky Yelpers, that found a button in between their two cups were the chosen ones to pick a box from the pile. And of course we followed the rule: The biggest box does not always hold the most precious present. While Lennart chose one of the smaller boxes, he found a note in it, which made him squeek in joy: "You get a 2012 Kalendarium from Mateo, Johan and Yelp!" Hooray and congrats. The other presents were not less amazing: T-Shirts, buttons, sticker and prints (one of which is one of a kind and was created right before the event). Mason D was the lucky winner of the one of a kind sketch, which showed a weird creature, sitting in a boat and fishing. "You know what?! I study fish." Mason D beamed all over his face. Well that is what we call match-making (by coincidence)!

First of all I would like to thank Mateo and Johan for opening Onkel Zozo to us and being amazing hosts. Thank you for the help and for taking your time for this evening, for the great chats and for letting us into your Zozoville-World. Both in their shop in Kreuzberg and in Zozoville in Friedrichshain as well as on fleamarkets you can meet those two incredible artists from USA and the Netherlands. Next I would like to thank Tina and MJ from Cafe Hilde for baking those amazing brownies. They also offer a wide selection of tea, breakfast and lunch. On certain occasions guests can also participate in their evening filled with music, films and book-session! last but not least i would like to thank Schwedenpunsch for providing us with this exceptional punch. Until 22nd December you still have the chance to drink and buy Schwedenpunsch at the Lucia Christmasmarket in Kulturbrauerei.

The pictures of this fabulous evening are to be found here and if you liked the event please leave your review here. And as usual you can find us on Facebook and give us your "like" and you can follow us on Twitter. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

LA West Elites Celebrate the Holidays in Ugly Sweaters at Fred Segal

Posted by Brinny

Screen shot 2011-12-15 at 5.41.15 PM

It was a cold night in Santa Monica, but the Elite yelpers of Los Angeles didn't care... They had their ugly sweaters to keep them warm! 500 Elite yelpers came out to Fred Segal for a night of shopping (after all we are still doing Yelp Shops Local), drinking and eating! A 20% discount was great incentive to get a a jump on some holiday shopping! Another find for Steevan A: "the Fred Segal store was awesome. I had never been inside before and I had a great time. Just another way that Yelp has introduced me to a new business." And that's how we do...

There were sponsors galore! Umami satisfied our burger cravings with delicious mini sliders and sweet potato fries while Qupé Wines had wine flowing like water. Laura S shares "The Syrah was awesome! I'm not a red wine person but I loved the Syrah!" Hurrah for Syrah!

Voli vodka showed us that vodka can be low calorie and taste great with their drinks like vanilla orange and cocoa raspberry. Sharon L admits, "We didn't make it over to the photo booth... got a little distracted at the Voli vodka station - only 1/3 of the calories!"

Firestone Walker went all out with a full on beer garden. Hovik N brags, "they were giving out free beer in real glass from Firestone Walker! Not Budlit in a plastic cup but great beer in a real glass!" Yogurtland swirled chocolate and tart all night long with holiday toppings galore. Kent D got his fix: "The Yogurtland booth was closing up so the nice lady gave me an extra tall serving of tart frozen yogurt... My favorite! I piled on crushed nuts, holiday yogurt pretzels and chocolate chips and it all went down the hatch! Yum-o!"

A.sweeT kept our sweet tooth happy and Travis I found, "A cute little sweet shop that doubles as a clothing boutique. They also cater events, I'm told. The little baggies of candy they thoughtfully presented us with hit the spot." CoolHuas was as popular as ever with their amazing ice cream sandwiches in flavors like eggnog and mint chocolate chip. Tara C was thrilled: "I love my annual eggnog indulgence, so at the Coolhaus truck, I pounced on the Oatmeal Cookie with Egg Nog ice cream.  Mmm...  I don't care if it's cold- ice cream or shave ice is always awesome!"

Benny's Taco's took us all to Mexico via their tacos! "Benny's went all out bringing enough food to feed the hoards," acclaimed Anita W. Fred Segal Comfort Cafe showed healthy food tastes good too with their wraps and tuna sandwiches.

And Isabella's Cookies reminded us that this is the best time of year to eat cookies. Pink Shutter photo booth gave us keepsakes to take home. And Picture Healing snapped the night away per their usual!

Our DJ from The Play List Generation played music to our ears and Lock Sicker jeans debuted their new raw denim line.

Michelle C sums up the night perfectly: "I'm surrounded by UGLY... sweaters! I LOVED this event. Thank you Yelp and Brittany B. for throwing such a festive shindig! I had fantabulous time in my makeshift ugly sweater, met some awesome Yelpers, grubbed on delicious free food, got silly in the photo booth, and took home nifty souvenirs to boot. My favorite was the Firestone Walker beer pong table--so much fun. What a wonderful way to end a humpday on a crazy, busy week.
Yelp, you jungle bell rock my socks! :)"

Oh what a night! View all reviews here and the photos here!

Until next time,

Yelp Chicagoland's Black + White Holiday Ball!

Posted by Jelena Z

Some people dream of a white Christmas... but Chicagoland Yelp Elites celebrate their holidays in the style of black and white! Last Wednesday, over 200 Yelp Elites and their guests headed towards the north pole for some festive celebrating at the Cuneo Mansion and Gardens in Vernon Hills. Donned in their crispest whites and most dazzling black, debonair Elites turned up the style quotient in the majestic mansion and beautiful pavillion dotted with gorgeous arrangements by Joseph's Florist.

Picnik collage1

Elites truly were the belles of the ball with their choice in beverages – Dewar's rocked the evening's house cocktail, Bigby's Pour House provided sensational seasonal brews, Woodchuck Cider crushed it on the crisp side, Lulu B. made smiles with their feel-good and taste-even-better wines, Crispin Cider got guests swooning and Cocoa di Vine's chocolate dessert wine indulged every sweet tooth in the house (err, mansion). Honest Tea delivered a non-alcoholic punch, and appetites were sated by magnificently delicious bites from Bauer's Catering, Go Roma and Cupcakes for Courage

Picnik collage2
Picnik collage3

Fueled by liquid courage, guests brought their crazy antics to the ActionBooth and smoother-than-Usher dance moves to the floor, with beats provided by Memory Makers DJs in the pavillion and Cage and Aquarium Productions in the mansion. Have you checked the ActionBooth photos? Insanely amusing. After all that movin' and shakin', Elites got glam and relaxed to the max in the Mario Tricoci Beauty Lounge where hair was styled, party make-up was applied and massages: delivered. Art and Nature Salon demonstrated eyelash extensions, too! Were you led privy to what the future holds by the palm reader, Mister Vibe, in the stately library? Do tell.

Did you contribute your recap of the spectacular soiree? You can do so right here, or just drop by to read the glowing reviews. I know you're pumped to peep all the photos, so click on this link to see the art-tastic collection of black and whites by the uber-talented Matt Ginger and click here to view the holiday-vivid snapshots by the always amazing Andrés J. Yelp Philadelphia's Holiday Fiesta

Posted by Michelle C

The weather outside may have been frightful, but the tequila inside Cantina Dos Segundos was delightful, which Philadelphia elites and their guests discovered at the the final YEE of 2011. Yelpers brought their holiday cheer and dressed to impress in festive outfits that ranged from Santa hats to sparkly party dresses.

Yelp Philly Elite Collage 12-12-11 1

Sauza margaritas courtesy of Southern Wine & Spirits and pints of beer flowed from the bar all night long, while tables of meat-loaded and meat-less nachos, quesadillas, Mexican pizzas and more were fully stocked. Flan and banana-chocolate empanadas made their sweet appearance later in the night.

Yelp Philly Elite collage 12-12-11 2

DJ QiCommand eased everyone in with some holiday tunes but the vibe quickly turned dancey. It wasn't long before some tequila-inspired moves were thrown down. In the meantime, yelpers filled out slips of paper describing the naughtiest and nicest things they did in all of 2011. Anonymously, of course. On our nice list this year? The yelpers who: donated bone marrow to a sick child; fostered/adopted dogs; gave their lunch to a homeless person; returned a lost credit card; invented penicillin... Hey, wait a minute!

Yelp Philly Elite collage 12-12-11 3

With all that good came a little naughty, some dirty deeds so scandalous they'd make George Michael blush. Fit to print are the yelpers who: did the dirty with their parents in the next room (time to move out!); flashed a merchant in Cozumel in exchange for some bling. Expect coal, guys. Tsk, tsk.

Yelp Philly Elite collage 12-12-11 4

Perhaps one of the nicest things yelpers did all year was bring new and gently-used gloves, hats, scarves and coats for a collection. A very hefty bag was brought to Philly AIDS Thrift the day after the party. Proceeds from sale items will benefit local organizations involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS, while other items will be donated to homeless shelters.

This was an incredible party to end an unforgettable year, and we couldn't have done it without the continued support of the Cantina Dos Segundos family. Peep the pics by Erika Letitia here, check out the reviews here and chime in on the conversation here.

Until next year, SYOY!

Soirée Elite Yelp fête Noël 2011 @ Les Minots de Marseille

Posted by Julie M

Ho Ho Ho !

Before his big Christmas rush next week, Santa decided to head south to relax with yelpers in Marseille last night at the last elite event of 2011! No, he was not in a hurry; he enjoyed his time with some chocolates, sushi, Bistrotea, beer from La Cagole de Marseille white chatting it up with over 40 Marseille elites!
Picnik collage 2
Les Minots de Marseille (which means “kids from Marseille”) is one of the most beautiful toyshops in the city. Far from the shopping frenzy in the city center, the shop, located off the Vieux Port, offered a relaxed, colorful spot for yelpers to peruse the thousands of toys on display and take advantage of owner Vincent B’s 10% discount. Davy U, who had never been to the shop before, “took advantage and got some x-mas shopping done” in between socializing and sipping wine.
What’s Christmas without snow? Well, in Marseille it never snows, but that didn’t stop from Mitsouko Sushi from sending in a storm of delicious snowball-shaped sushi that guests like Jean-Baptiste L found “almost too beautiful to eat.”
Thirsty? Not our yelpers! After a few glasses of rosé wine, it was time to raise a toast to the brand new e-shop for the famous local beer brand, La Cagole de Marseille with a couple of locally-made brewskies that Julien L found “irresistible!”  But wait, we don’t only drink alcohol, we also like tea! And Laure F was here to introduce Bistrotea to yelpers. Those little sticks are so chic! Emy-Line C liked “the smart design and the very good taste”.

La Chocolatière du Panier could not come because she was preparing all the Christmas chocolates... But she made some specialties for yelpers! La Barre Marseillaise is “one of the most delicious chocolates” Noura N has ever tasted in her life. And yelpers could also taste some ginger chocolate, coconut chocolate... And guess who could not eat chocolate with his white gloves? Yes! Santa himself! He came! After a long day working in a mall called Centre Valentine, Santa Claus came with Serge his personal photographer! It was a surprise and they all were happy to take a picture with him with no kids around! Yes children aren’t the only ones who want pictures with Santa and after snapping their pix with the big man himself, guests like François Mtook the opportunity to rattle off their wish list to Santa.

Eventually everybody left with a little present: a Christmas-tree-shaped soap from a local soap factory La Licorne, scented with lemon-verbena, lavender or orange blossom. Christine F sums it up best with this “rosé wine, yummy sushi, delicious chocolates, cute gifts, and a warm welcome in a fantastic setting, what else could you ask for?” Ummm, maybe an iPad, since you’ve asked...

San Diego's XXX-Mas Party!

Posted by Danny Wurst

The holiday season is usually filled with nice family moments, but this year San Diego celebrated a night of naughty with an XXX-Mas Party at Cuvier Club. Monday evening 300 Yelp Elites stripped their Santa outfits and suited up with the other type of stockings for a scandalous affair that won’t be soon forgotten.

Upon arrival guests were greeted by a sensational staff showering all with beer, cocktails, and a wondrous wine tree courtesy of The Abbey Catering and Event Design. Their tray passed food samples of coconut shrimp, chicken skewers in peanut sauce, mini sliders, and more were the perfect pre-game meal for the mayhem that was to come.

Scantily clad costumes from throughout the years of Yelp parties surfaced in a slideshow, while more memories were created from two different photo stations. JDIXX Photography captured shots of the sexy Downtown Dolls posing with everything from short shorts to streakers and printed strips of four poses from the house booth gave almost everyone a chance to recap the rambunctiousness.

DJ Decon kept the tunes bumpin for a dance party of epic proportions and even included beats for a booty shaking competition in which Amber Elizabeth E walked away with a trip to Puerto Vallerta for winning. Other raffle prizes featured dinners at Couvier Club and stays at The Abbey’s Vegas high rise. It was indeed a pretty amazing way to end the year of being Yelp Elite.

View the pics of the event or if you couln't make it read the reviews to see what you missed. Thanks again to all of the rockin’ sponsors! Check out all of their social media below...

Yelp Chicago’s Art-filled, Hard Day’s Night

Posted by Johnny Todd

Does it seem like no matter what you do, you can't get everything done during the week? Like, it's nigh impossible to eat, drink, party, get pretty, dance, and do good in just seven days? Well, the rock stars of the Yelp Chicago community figured out how to handle all that: The 12 Days of Yelpiness. Over 1500 invited guests opted to check out the art, food, drink, and more at Bridgeport destination Zhou B Art Center.

What’s a party without eats? We couldn’t tell ya, because there was food as far as the eye can see. And, not just foodamazing food. How could there not have been? With restos like NYC Bagel Deli, Go Roma, Isla Pilipina, Sweet Ride, Homage Street Food, Ra Sushi, Fiore's Deli, Ste Martaen & Soul Vegetarian Vegan Food Truck, Flavor 180, Wow Bao, Steve's Deli, Union Sushi & Barbeque, Sprinkles Cupcakes, Forever Yogurt, Starfruit, Chimney Cake Island, and Beard Papa's Cream Puffs doling out plate, bowl and cup full of their mouth-watering fare, attendees were left wondering if the 13th day offered beds to sleep off their food babies.

Beds, no. Libations, yes, yes, 1000 times, yes! Whether one had a taste for beer, hankering for wine, a longing for spirits, a need for coffee, or a passion for TEA-totaling (ha!), no thirst was left unquenched. CityGrounds Coffee Bar, Spicebox Whisky, Lulu B Wine, Honest Tea, FRS Healthy Energy, Crispin Cider, Dewar's Scotch Whisky, Rishi Tea, Magners Cider, Remy Martin, and Chicago Beverage Systems, LLC with Diageo (offering up Guinness Black Lager, Harp, Smithwicks, and Smirnoff Ice) served up holiday cheer by the gulp and invitees were gleeful for it.

Setting this grand fête at an art center was not by accident. This was an evening to celebrate art & entertainment. The light & draping genius of Art of Imagination set the upstairs stage for drama and excitement. The creative visionaries of Kelly Cardenas Salon, Strange Beauty Show, The Chicago School of Flower Design, and Trish Page made sure hair, face and environment were as perfectly gorgeous as the day is long. Cage & Aquarium Productions kept the beat bumping, while the lords and ladies of Design Dance Company leapt and danced their way into guests hearts. Daniel Crane provided drum sauces for, at least, 11 percussionists. And adding to the magic, Alex de Guzman and Lauren P piped up and belted it out.

Rock For Kids was the charity partner for this night of live art installations and art galleries to peruse. Your Private Limousine got guests to and fro while Uber provided pics, gear and trips for the long haul. Keeping the evening on track were the professionals of D'Absolute Catering. With so much going on, it’s a good thing we had a crew of folks documenting it all. Victoria Sprung snapped all the candids to make you feel like you lived the action. Bernard Costa put the ‘pretty’ into portraits and Capture This captured the attention and admiration of people who like to take photobooth pictures. If you’re into the written word, we’ve got you covered here. VIDEO from Mike Hendzel forthcoming. Yep. Video.

2011 has been a year of incredible events and adventure for Yelp Chicago and none of it would have been possible without the businesses, vendors, photographers, djs, and people (yelpers!) that make The Windy City second to none. Enjoy the holidays and thank you for wrapping 12 nights of magic into one.

Brooklyn Yelp Walks the Wok.

Posted by peter d.

Last night, the best of Brooklyn Yelp took a tasty trip to China via N. 10th St. in Williamsburg. NYC Elites gathered at the Brooklyn Wok Shop for an exclusive look at the newly opened, beautifully appointed restaurant serving Chinese food, 2.0.

The brainchild of Chef Edric Har and his wife Melissa, the Wok Shop is offering up an alternative to the greasy Chinese takeout joints on every NYC corner. Having worked in some of the finest kitchens (Le Bernadin, Cru, Veritas) in New York, Edric is bringing French techniques to bear on traditional Cantonese dishes. Combined with higher quality ingredients, including naturally-raised, hormone-free meats, the Wok Shop has upgraded Chinese food to a new, healthier, tastier level.

Some of the samples offered Elites were the addictive, finger-licking good wings with a cinnamon soy glaze, salt and pepper squid, and their signature beef short rib soup. This broth, fortified by handmade noodles, was a comforting treat on a cold evening.

Sixpoint's brand new Brevity Wit paired perfectly with the menu of magnificent Chinese treats, while many a happy guest sipped on the tasty Pinot Grigio and Malbec options courtesy of Lulu B. A huge thanks goes out to Edric, Melissa and the rest of the Wok Shop staff for all their hospitality. Milwaukee Elites Celebrate a Very Yelp-y Kitschmas!

Posted by Rachel Fell

I knew this was going to be a good one, Yelp-nation.

I guess I just had a gut feeling that this was going to an end-of-year, holiday bash for the books. I knew it when after almost a year of being a solid Yelp community here in the fine, fine city of Milwaukee — which is Algonquin for 'the good land,' if you aren't familiar with Alice Cooper — we had amassed a group of amazing elites from every nook and cranny of MKE. I knew it when we started eating sushi and Turkish and French food on the regular together. I knew it after watching elites and guests polka together. I knew it when I read the reviews, celebrating everything beautiful and vibrant and unique about the four-one-four and stellar local businesses.

So when Yelp Milwaukee got together this past Thursday at Libiamo Restaurant + Hall for 'A Very Yelp-y Kitschmas,' I knew we were in for a good time. And the photos don't lie, friends.

A quick rundown? Montepulciano, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, hot cocoa (spiked and N/A) and amazing bites both beloved and brand new courtesy of Libiamo's sister establishment, Nessun Dorma. (See pancetta BLTs above!) Elites and guests were also treated to smoked salmon bruschetta, balsamic-glazed ribs, caponata, formaggio sandwiches, portabello-marsala ravioli, and more! We played "take away" white elephant, which was a total blast, rocked giant jenga + bags, played "Pin the nose on the Rudolph," and hung out with a rather sketchy Santa...

We raised some solid coin for the Hunger Task Force, danced Charlie Brown-style to Vince Guaraldi, voted on our favorite ugly sweater (check out Mark S in all his winning glory below!), and had an absolute blast celebrating the holidays and our Yelp community. I'm so proud and honored to be a CM of such an amazing group of folks in such an amazing city. I can't wait to see what 2012 has in store for Yelp in MKE!

It's Kitschmas Time In New Orleans!

Posted by Joi

It might have been a chilly night in New Orleans, but the prospect of mingling– and jingling– at Chickie Wah Wah drew many a naughty and nice Elite.

Who can resist some Holiday cheer? Like Cajun egg nog
made with Old New Orleans Rum, and cocktails featuring Tito's Vodka, wine from Pasternak Wine Imports (Cave de Lugny Les Charmes) and everyone's favorite, Abita Amber. A variety of festive bites from then newly opened Pizza Garage at Chickie Wah Wah included all kinds of gourmet pizzas, veggie stir fry, wings and other bits of Southern fried goodness!

Wait, is that cheer? Or straight-up naughtiness? You be the judge.

Speaking of... I'm sure we're all wondering, have our Elites been naughty or nice this year? Of course they've been very good boys & girls, what with all the funny/useful/cool review writing and encouraging their fellow yelpers to do the same! Not to mention bringing non perishables for our food drive to benefit Second Harvest! Shockingly, though, the naughty things outweighed the nice, according to our Naughty/Nice box. (Note: you must be 18+ to read most of these): "Got trashed and wore a trash bag." "Touched myself while thinking about another yelper" and "Had a 3-day vacation affair with a HS boyfriend 15 years after first meeting him."

The nicest thing? Someone "proved Joi to NOLA" (thank you, lovely person!) Oh and someone also "wished Santa a Happy Hanukkah at the mall"... who obviously wasn't the same person who "told Santa that I'll never tell anyone about Thailand."

A huge thank you to Dixie and Dale of Chickie Wah Wah and Karen at Garage Pizza for hosting our kitschy holiday bash! Also to Carolyn Turgeon who took our photos for the evening! Don't forget to read the reviews and peep the flickr for the rest of the photos!

Merrily, Merrily Yours,

Yelp's Weihnachtspunschtrinken

Posted by Andreas R

As a good Viennese, you spend a big part of December with christmas shopping, snow shovelling and of course with drinking Glühwein at the christmas market. We are still waiting for the snow to come this year, but the many booths at the Weihnachtsdorf im Alten AKH are of course already opened.

A group of Yelpers was invited to get a free tasting at three booths of the market to get an impression of the various Glühwein and punch variations. And there are countless of them: the choice between Turbopunsch, Glühmost, Beerenpunsch, Bärentöterpunsch, Heiße Liebe Punsch, Tequila Punsch and many many more was not exactly easy.

All three booths convinced the Yelpers with their great quality of drinks. The final visit at the famous Punschstadl was definitely the highlight of the night though - because of the "good" music (who doesn´t love DJ Ötzi) and because the Yelpers finally got to see some snow, even though it was seven degrees outside.

Since Santa Claus is not an Elite Yelper yet, the Viennese Community Manager took his role that night and distributed christmas presents from a red Yelp bag. Especially the Yelp gloves were very popular to warm cold hands together with the warm drinks.

A big thank you goes out to the team from Weihnachtsdorf Altes AKH who provided us with the free drinks and due to the high quality of the punsch hangovers were rare the next day. Another thank you goes out to the Viennese Yelp Community, that turned every Elite Event this year into a big success.

Find the reviews of the Yelpers for the event and of course more pictures to look at.

Servus, merry christmas and a happy new year!

A Merry Kitschmas To All In Pittsburgh!

Yelp Elites walked into their very own holiday card at Claddagh Irish Pub for Yelp's Merry Kitschmas Elite Event. As Nick C remarks, "If one could walk through a Christmas story, it is quite possible some of the pages would have been mirror images of the Yelp Elite's event." Let's open up the pages on this story...

"It was a cold and wintry day outside," recalls Meredith B, "and walking into Claddagh was like walking into someone's cozy living room – stocked with food, booze, and friendly people!" A holiday duo of guitar and voilin treated the crowd to a mellow mix of holiday and Irish tunes as Elites cozied up to the fireplace or caught a kitschy moment in the photo booth compliments of Ray Miles Photography.

Claddagh's pulled out the very merry red carpet, as guests stuffed their belly's full of the most magnificent platter of treats this side of the North Pole. Ricardo T's "mind is still reeling from the amazingness that was the food. The meatballs were light and full of flavor, the mini chicken pot pies were savory and I don't even remember how many caprese skewres I had, but man I could go for several dozen more." Nom!

But the feast didn't stop there! Karl M chowed down on the chocolate and cream puffs, "but it was the bread pudding that blew my mind. The added bonus of real pudding (made with whiskey) was a delicious surprise. The most unique aspect was the apple flavor. I could eat an entire meal of that bread pudding." Honest Tea also joined us for the holiday merriment, with samples of their delicious Pomegranite Ice Tea, Honey Green Tea and Lemonade. For a little harder treat, Stephanie T "was delighted to find Magner's Cider there. I've always been a big fan. I liked that Claddagh's was keepin' it in the fam' with some good Irish cider. I am tooootally sold on their pear flavor!" Bottoms up!

London Elites Celebrate XXXMas @ MADD

Posted by Katie

Have you been good girls and boys this year? Well after attending Yelp's Exotic XXXMas Party @ MADD last night, some of our London Elite Squad may have to be very very good for the next couple of weeks if they expect any presents in their stocking this Christmas!

Last night MADD (that stands for Mango ADDiction) in Soho hosted our naughty revellers at a very sexy soiree that saw tasters of their brand new menu, some seriously strong mango shooters, chilled bottles of Meantime lager, and even a chance to build their own dessert from a selection of naughty and nice treats - chocolate or fruit? You decide!

Yelp LONDON Elite Collage1 12 Dec 2011
At 7pm prompt the Elites started flooding through the doors of the newly renovated mango joint to be greeted by Santa's helpers holding trays of Mexican Mango (tequila, mango and lime) and Spicy Mango (vodka, mango and Tabasco) shooters. Samples of MADD's new menu were beautifully laid out and included Mango and Passionfruit Fool, Shortbread with Mango Salsa and Mango and Sticky Coconut Rice.

Yelp LONDON Elite Collage2 12 Dec 2011
While our Elite Squad tucked into the delicious treats, the party got underway as the Sexy Santa of Soho-ho-ho flirted with yelpers in his mistletoe-clad grotto. Lysh J and Cordelle P certainly enjoyed his company (we couldn't get them out of there!) Santa also had some gifts for those brave enough to go and sit on his knee - a fabulous Yelp shot glass and bottle opener! Christmas has come early this year for the London Elites!

Yelp LONDON Elite Collage3 12 Dec 2011

Next, mango coulis, fresh pineapple, crushed Oreos, gummy bears, dried cranberries, toffee sauce and lots of other ingredients were laid out as it was time for the yelpers to build their own dessert! Things got messy as the whipped cream circulated and Santa was covered! But who licked it off? Well, you'll just have to look at the photos to find out! Our very own super-Elite Matt B was celebrating his birthday - so what did we give him? A boob cake of course! Well, it was an XXXMas Party after all...

Yelp LONDON Elite Collage4 12 Dec 2011
A huge thank you to Ralph Monthienvichienchai, Director, and Jon Sivak, Manager, of MADD, for hosting such a fantastic and fun event, thank you to Phil Sharp for his ever-fabulous photography and thank you to Santa and his helpers for keeping our Elites truly entertained for the evening. Lastly a huge thank you to all of the seriously sexy London yelpers who made the event, and remember to check out the reviews, Talk thread and photos - warning, some of them are very naughty indeed!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Yelp sets Amsterdam On Fire! @ Grand Cafe Gezond

Posted by Philippine

Yelp zette Amsterdam On Fire39

Heep Heep Hooray! Yelp.nl celebrated its first birthday last Saturday, December 10th and what better way than to celebrate it with the Amsterdam yelpers?! The first Yelper Event stated: Yelp is On Fire! The magnificent venue Grand Café Gezond was completely transformed and combined grandeur with the best food, drinks and entertainment Amsterdam has to offer! With a truly stunning turnout of over 200 yelpers and guests, it was something Amsterdam had not seen before…

De Fabulous Doorhost Hoax gave everyone a warm welcome at the entrance. Once you had entered the venue, the sponsors displayed their delicious food, thirst-quenching drinks and skillful acts. And did they! Princess provided a live-cooking show; a chef made small bites from heaven, which perfectly matched the various beers of Jupiler at the bar! There was dancing to the tunes of DJs Alarm& Paniek and the band "Blood, Sweat & Kiers", sponsored by Cafe Casablanca. Meanwhile, the cocktailshakers of House of Bols served 200 yelpers dandy cocktails troughout the whole evening! Luckily, the lounge area was decorated by Mean Bean for some relaxing and reflection.

Elite Yelpers have a special place in everyone's Yelp-heart, therefore the Players was left in charge of the VIP-area. Who better to ask for their zesty signature drink and their notorious golden-cages-with-fireworks-on-top?! In combination with the inflatable ‘Chesterfield-sofas’ designed by Blofield, this area exclaimed "Very Important" indeed. Spectacular entertainment was brought by no other than the entertainer Baris Bilgiç, a.k.a. Mr.NoOne, who literally set Yelp On Fire. A special praise to the fine gentlemen who work for the international security company Holkema Group; they kept everyone safe and sound during the feast.

Yelpers indulged themselves with the extraordinary cheesecake provided by Sucre, the traditional Dutch cheeses of Reypenaer and the rich soups of Cafe Flinck. Did you know that SoVine winebar serves over 100(!) different wines per glass?! The yelpers eagerly tasted their wines... In the middle of the venue, there was a podium for the brands of A Brand New DayFinlandia Vodka, Arizona Ice Tea and Southern Comfort. Whether you prefer yours “on the rocks” or pre-mixed, there was no stopping in serving, while the semi-pro pokerplayer Steven Smith taught yelpers the ins & outs of playing poker. He even gave a box full of pokerchips to the best poker-playing-yelper!

And there was more... Princess en Yelp Amsterdam organized the Yelp Princess Award 2011; the most active and inspiring yelper was being honored and received two fantastic Princess appliances! Floor R. can righteously call herself the Yelp Princess for a whole year, as she was truly the most active yelper in Amsterdam and has never missed a Yelp Event! Congratulations Floor R.! Let's see which yelper can surpass her next year?!

The organic beverages of Oggu and the water of Earth Water were pleasantly refreshing, whereas the organic energydrink 28BLACK made yelpers want to dance, and dance some more. When in need of fresh air, you could step onto the balcony. The boys and girls of Fouteskipakken.nl transformed this part of the venue to an European-style 'après-ski bar'! They served glühwein, shots and made it 'snow' with an artificial snow machine... When in need of something warmer, the 'barrista' of Smit & Dorlas made excellent coffee & Legends Tea! It could also be served 'to-go', because the night was not over yet... Players hosted the after party and yelpers continued the party for quite some time! Needless to say, no one left Yelp is On Fire empty-handed; all the sponsors had provided brilliant goodies and Princess even gave a Fondue as a present to every yelper!

Dear yelpers from Amsterdam, guests and sponsors: thank you very much for your presence and all your effort! You have made Yelp is On Fire exceptionally memorabel!

It has been a striking one-year anniversary, or as Caryn B. states "a really gezellig event for all us Yelpers". Read and write the reviews here

Fortunately, there are photos and a video... JP Oelen and Susanne van der Raaij, thank you so much for all the photos!

Eline Wonders will make a captivating video to remember this evening. If you are ever in need of a video, Eline is a Wonder!

Again, thank you very much for truly a night to remember!

By the way: Nemo is missing! Who has found Nemo?

Yelp zette Amsterdam On Fire39

“On the rocks” of gemixt, deze drankjes vlogen over tafel.

Jullie hebben Yelp is On Fire zo bijzonder gemaakt!

Yelp Orlando Shops Local

Posted by Colleen Burns

Orlando is deep in the Yelp challenge to spend your holiday shopping dollars with boutique and specialty neighborhood merchants; we are taking the Yelp Shops Local Pledge! Not only are local businesses pumped about being part of such a great initiative, but they are also getting the word out about where they shop local and what Orlando holiday festivities they love.

We chatted with a wide range of local personalities in Orlando so make sure to check them all out and get some ideas of where you can shop local!

Scott Joseph, the most trusted restaurant critic in Central Florida, gives us his insight on where to dine out locally this season if you are not for spending hours in the kitchen. However, you won’t find him here towards the end of December because for the holidays, he gifts himself with travel! “Last year I was in Vienna, Prague and Berlin. This year it will be Britain, with visits to London and Edinburgh. I enjoy seeing the holiday traditions of other cultures.”

Jami W of Peterbrooke Chocolatier in Winter Park has literally dreamed of owning her own chocolate Shoppe since she was a kid. “The original version of the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was released the year I was born, 1971, and it was my absolute favorite book as a child - pretty sure it was my destiny to own Peterbrooke. Chocolate is in my veins.” She also shares her Top 10 Shop Local stops in our City Beautiful.

Dana R lives and breathes shopping local and has dedicated her business to it! Other Peoples Property, more loving known as OPP, has a two-fold purpose: 1. Encouraging people to buy less NEW items, therefore, creating less waste and 2. To create revenue streams for giving. This is done through selling the most amazing Vintage around and sponsoring local events to spread our vision. Find out what her favorite holiday tradition is and checking out her next Swap & Shop event in 2012.

You can find Melissa F and her husband, John F, owners of Mother Falcon & The Falcon Bar & Gallery in Thornton Park, doing their shopping at this Sunday’s Grandma Party Bazaar. She also shares other local stops she plans on making while wrapping up her holiday shopping. They also have a great deal going on for shopping local at Mother Falcon, don’t miss out.

Orlando’s own local fashion hero, J from J Everyday Fashion, loves “all the boutiques along Park Avenue, and the second-hand furniture stores in Ivanhoe Village.” Also a fun Orlando fact about her and her favorite gift she ever received was when she was 10 and that “year all my gifts were The Little Mermaid themed.”

Charlotte Elites Delight As Their Own Holidays!

Posted by Nicole W

It was a holiday party unlike any other. Re Salon & Med Spa hosted a bevvy of Charlotte Elites including, but not limited to, Festivus, New Year's Eve, Thanksgiving and even Make Your Own Hat Day...who knew?!

Even though the costumes were in full force it didn't prevent the guests from noshing on the delicious bites from The New York Butcher Shoppe. David A says, "The spicy meatballs from New York Butcher Shoppe were so tasty that I counted my shirt lucky for catching some of the drippings!" Those who were desperately seeking sweets checked out re's gorgeous upstairs area and snacked on Cupcake Delirium's minis! Whether it was the Caramel Egg Nog, Peppermint Chocolate Candy Cane or Hot Chocolate, guests were certainly in a sugar filled delirium.

No holiday would be complete without an array of beverages! New Belgium came to the rescue with Fat Tire, Snow Ale and Ranger...complete with free glasses! Bruce K "looks forward to opening his next New Belgium Ranger or Snow Day with the neat bottle opener and drinking from his great beer drinking glass!" That's a gift that keeps on giving. And guests also indulged in hybrid wine – to the tune of a petite sirah and chardonnay! What a grape addition!

Guest were treated to a wide variety of mini spa services from a zen worthy chair massage, to skin analysis to a hot holiday polish change! Bethany R says "Jesse, stylist extraordinare, rocked out a precise edge trim for me in no time flat!" And we did spy a few Elites getting competitive in the toy room...hey, Connect Four can be intense!

'Tis the Season for Toys, Tidings & Too Much Fun in Columbus!

Posted by Christina C.

It was a magical evening filled with beer, bites, and burlesque!?

Hundreds of ugly Christmas sweater-wearing Columbus yelpers arrived at The Bluestone – a renovated and converted church – for the second all-community party of the year: Yelp in Toyland!

"This was hands-down, not-even-really-a-competition, holy-cow whizz-bang the best holiday party of any stripe I've ever been to, ever. Rollicking entertainment, delicious (free!) food, booze samples and one of the most handsome venues I've ever had the pleasure in which to step foot, yep, it was a Yelp party- WRIT LARGE!" exclaims Matthew B.

Toyalnd collage 1
Toyland collage 2
This variety show and party raised more than $1,000 and 50 toys for charity CD101 for the Kids to ensure families all over Central Ohio have a great holiday. But of course with the good, comes a little bad…

Turning up the heat on stage – and giving Teri D the "must-go-repent" feeling – were The Ooh-La-Las & Viva Valezz burlesque. "My old upbringing came back to haunt me with the building having once been a church and here were ladies doing their really darn good burlesque routines on stage." But the cool sounds from the voices of acoustic acts Joey Hebdo, Ryan Humbert and Phillip Fox Band were sure to excite their ears. Guest MC and Dj Charles Erickson of TheClampDown spun spectacular tunes and yelpers even had an opportunity to make music of their own on the giant floor keyboard.

Toyland collage 3
But wait a second! This WAS a variety show, right? Jest Jugglers featuring Evan Smith and Wes Bourne took the stage with unicycles & bowling pins, Swing Columbus featuring Shannon Varner and Mark Calkins showed us their moves – and aerial tossesBill Gladwell read and blew our minds, Laylia shook us all night long with belly dances that topped Mindy W's evening, and Open Heart Creatures made us think out of the box when it comes to puppetry.

Not to be outdone by the entertainment, the complimentary beverages were in a spotlight of their own! If you found yourself thirsty, Wyandotte Winery & Camelot Cellars were pouring a few of their made-in-Ohio wines, Elevator Brewery passed out locally-brewed Three Frogs IPA and Winter Warmer, Honest Tea hydrated the masses with delicious, truly healthy organic bevs, and Middle West Spirits educated and elated each yelper who tried their high-end liquors like OYO Honey Vanilla Bean vodka.

Toyland food collage 1
And the food? Erica P tells us she and her friends "stuffed their faces with some of the best treats and samples of dishes from around Columbus!"  Well, duh! With savory samples from The Fresh Market, Zapico Foods and The Lodge in Hide-A-Way Hills, Buff Lo Dip, Taste By Design, Commonwealth Sandwich Bar, Banana Leaf and Yabo's Tacos, it's no wonder guests walked out satisfied.

Forget the milk 'n' cookies! Santa is going to want the sweet treats provided by Winans Chocolates and Coffees, Al's Delicious Popcorn and Three Babes & a Baker! Heather G "is seriously still dreaming about that raspberry chocolate cupcake."

Speaking of Santa… who dared to hop in the photo booth with that jolly fella? Thanks, Shutterbooth Columbus! Photos can be found here.

As the busy holiday shopping season falls upon us, Yelp is encouraging everyone to shop local this year. Making it hard to avoid, the oversized Yelp Shops Local Pledge Wall collected the signatures of hundreds of yelpers who agreed to try to buy local this season! And if you want to see what you missed, check out the photos from Adam of GroovyDoodle Photography on our Flickr page. (Feel free to post, but please keep the Yelp & GroovyDoodle watermark logos in tact.)

"Finally, I doff all my caps for the many and varied sponsors- many of them my favorite businesses around town," concludes Matthew B. Happy Yelping to all, and to all a good-night!

Happy Holidays & SYOY!

Yelp LA's Tinsel Town Holiday

In true LA East Elite fashion, Yelp’s Tinsel Town Holiday party at Libertine was a dancing, drinking, photoboothing festive time. Guests glittered from head to toe in fancy attire and kicked off the evening with an Original Moonshine cocktail hour featuring Fall Haze (Original Moonshine, fresh apple & pear juice, accented with ginger, lemon & clove), Spice the Night (Original Moonshine, fresh lime juice, jalapeno and essence of basil & orange), and Holiday Thyme (Original Moonshine, fresh lime juice, cucumber and thyme) hosted by black LAB ventures. Once upstairs, Elites sampled treats like pumpkin spice cake pops, miniature chocolate peppermint cupcakes, miniature snickerdoodle cookies from The Sweet Chemist.

Picnik collage

A slew of sparkly new avatars are now spotted all over Yelp thanks to Project Photobooth. While they were waiting to show off their fierce poses, guests guzzled down Golden Road Brewing Point the Way IPA and Hef, as well as seasonal Pisco Portón cocktails - Portón Sparkler (Pisco Portón, St. Germain, champagne, Ruby Red Grapefruit juice, and club soda) and Portonero (Pisco Portón, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, bitters, and ginger ale). After being loosened up by liquor, the crowd busted out some serious moves thanks to the bangin’ beats provided by Newestra DJs Dances with Wolves. And in between boogying and boozing, Elites found it in the spirit of the season to donate to Eagle Rock Yacht Club, raising over $300 for the non-profit that provides after-school activities for kids in high-risk neighborhoods around LA. Those generous souls were entered into a raffle to win Eagle Rock Yacht Club swag (including a “Don’t be a Dick” flask) and iMainGo portable speaker cases for the iPhone provided by Portable Sound Labs.

A big thanks to all the sponsors for giving LA East Elites one last bash to close out the year. Pics can be found on the Yelp LA Flickr page and on Project Photobooth's website.

Until 2012,

Orlando Elites Enjoy Holiday HH @ NV

Posted by Colleen Burns

What once used to be an alley way is now a posh, relaxing bar in Downtown Orlando and our Elite squad welcomed in the weekend this Friday with a hopin’ Holiday Happy Hour.

NV Lounge is a small lounge tucked away on Pine Street in downtown Orlando. It's a bar built for atmosphere, artistry, ambiance and gorgeous sounds. Recently acquiring their liquor license, we celebrated with festive Complimentary cocktails: Vanilla & Strawberry luxuriousness called Christmas Martini and Magic Christmas which was basically a refreshing Christmas in a cup.  We also previewed their brand new, cozy rooftop lounge that brings the big city feel to our beautiful Orlando skyline.

Picnik collage (7)

NV provided the perfect combination of downtown allure with a quaint neighborhood vibe that was ideal for this event. I hadn't been to NV in awhile, so I pleased to find out about the recently acquired liquor license and the rooftop addition -- so cute! - Jacqueline F.

Orlando's premiere gourmet cupcake delivery company, The Ultimate Drunken Cupcake, provided the most intoxicating cupcakes around. If you can have it in a drink they can put it in a cupcake! We noshed on delicious Egg Nog and Pumpkin Spice mini cupcakes, with a dark liquor flare!

Picnik collage

The Music and the atmosphere, although tight is very nice. I was actually surprised at this lounge and would love the opportunity to come back for great music with friends. - Rhea P.

Small noshes from Orlando's Organic Tea CafeInfusion Tea kept our tummies full including a nice Fruit and Cheese spread, Goat Cheese Crudités and their well known fresh hummus with pita chips.

For our listening entertainment, Liza Hartline brought down the house with her energy and spit some Poetry in motion! It was pure spoken word flow like no other, passionate and filled with emotion. Some yelpers took part in a White Elephant Yelp Exchange ranging from a bottle of wine to old antique china!

Picnik collage2

Also enjoyed the yummy cupcakes that were on hand. The spoken word poetry was entertaining and provided a unique touch to the night.  Ryan N.

A huge shout out to all of our sponsors and Urban Flats who graciously took care of validating our parking for the evening as well and for NV Lounge in hosting us on such a beautiful evening. Great big thank you to Elite yelper Kelley S who took care of photog duties - check out all the pics here.

If you want to catch more of the event buzz, hop over to the event listing to read all about the excitement from your fellow yelpers.

Happy Holidays,

Yelp Wash & Drink

Posted by Robin

It was the first time this year Munich was covered in snow, when the Yelper´s and all those who still want to become Yelpers, met at Wash & Coffee in order to celebrate the start of YELP in Munich. Who now reads Laundrette and automatically thinks of some tiled hall from the 80s, is absolutely wrong! Here at Wash& Coffee, you can easily sweeten your idle time... The modern Laundrette, which combines a normal Laundromat with a stylish Café, provides a bar, a nonchalant lounge, complimentary internet access as well as funky illumination! Everything we needed to initiate a yelp party – so Yelp Wash & Drink was launched!

Wc20_bea  Wc8 Wc22-bea Wc16_bea

In that trendy location we were only missing the right drinks and snacks which is an absolut must-have. What was served then was the pure indulgence. Instead of coffee and cake, gin, beer, cola and sparkling wine were dulcifying our time. The time flew and the Yelpers were enjoying the party… Fortunately the people from Wash & Coffee were so tolerant and generous, that we were able to extend the party for an hour. Our sponsors also were so generous that it took us a bit to empty all the provided drinks. Therefore a big THANK YOU to The Duke Gin München, whose Gin was the greatest party guarantor ever. A real Bavarian original from Munich. That Gin was born here and is still brewing in the Barerstrasse in Munich. Also a big THANK YOU to Lammsbräu, whose organic beer not only tastes fantastic but also it´s sustainable programme suits to the location. And last but not least to Afri Cola, which is a great brand for every party.

Wc23 Wc24 Wc26 Wc25

We tried to finish the party at 11 pm, but we had to extend the party till Midnight. Nobody wanted to go because the party just seemed to be on zenith. A great evening for everyone!

I just want to thank thank Linus for hosting the bar, Jan for the great music he played and Erol, who will show up with a great movie of this event. And of course a big thank you to all the guests and the sponsors The Duke Gin Munich, Lammsbräu, Afri Cola and Wash & Coffee. Everybody who wants to see all pics of the evening please klick "hier", for the reviews of the event please klick "hier".

Soirée Yelp Paris Elite Dessine moi un Ugly Sweater au Lieu Commun

Posted by Elodie

So luxe !"

Take a famous French designer, add bubble tea galore, Fauchon pastries to die for, comforting Poilâne toasts, some good homemade mulled wine and a whole bunch of ugly sweaters and you will get one of the most colourful Elite events this year! Last Friday at Lieu Commun, Matali Crasset and her team welcomed around 100 yelpers for the last 2011 Parisian Elite Event. A fantastic evening for Amaury C "to wear a sweater he will probably never take out of his closet ever again, melt for the santa hoodie-shaped sweet treats prepared and served by Fabien Rouillard, Fauchon's new Pastry Chef and rediscover Bubble tea with the adorable team from Bubble Fever  "

The challenge that night was to come dressed in your ugliest sweater, with as many reindeer or Christmas patterns, glitters and shoulder pads as possible. Welcomed by a glass of mulled wine or a vanilla/taro bubble tea, the Elite guests soon discovered the fun and pop atmosphere of Lieu Commun, where indie designers showcase some of their latest creations along with the colourful books from Les Editions de L'Epure. Laura C  fell in love with "these hand-bound books with a single focus on pepper, chestnut or yoghurt... So unique !"

Between two conversations on the obvious ugliness of their seasonal cardigans, Elite members indulged in a few Poilâne tartines with tapenade or tuna spread, before throwing themselves at the Carachoc Christmas cake served by Fabien, Fauchon's Pastry Chef. After a couple glasses of spicy mulled wine, things were getting hot in Lieu Commun ! As a matter of fact, Fanny B  overindulged in "the mulled wine, for the the first time this season, and it rocked - terribly Christmasy !"

If you were at the event and want to share your impressions, you can leave a review here. For more photos from the evening, swing over to our Flickr page.

Vegas Elites Have A Santa Snack Attack!

Posted by Misti Yang

With all the shop localing going down in Vegas, it was time for yelpers to have a Santa snack attack to refuel, and what better place to do that than at Double Helix Wine and Whiskey Lounge in the heart of Town Square. The afternoon was filled with eats, songs and shopping!

Collage 1 DH
Double Helix served up snacks fit for Saint Nick from savory Olive Poppers, arancini and Grown-Up Grilled Cheeses to sweet chocolate chip cookies and warm Cabernet brownies prepared with real wine flour, and it all washed down nicely with Adult Chocolate Milk and Mexican Coffee. All of this kept yelpers in the spirit for Shop Local Sunday at Town Square and for a rousing holiday song game.

Fremont Foodie Crawl with Seattle Yelp Elite

Posted by Crystal H

Bundled up Seattleites descended on Fremont businesses this past Wednesday night for a bar crawl meets sugar high mash up like no other. Groups of yelpers were broken into Blue, Red and Green teams and after a short schwag grab headed out to taste what Fremont has to offer: food, drinks, candy and ice cream? Oh my!

Stop One: At 9 Million In Unmarked Bills, yelpers were treated with a lesson in the proper way to taste whiskey with the Woodinville Distillery's Harvest Release Bourbon's microbarreled line. Firestone Walker Brewery's ales were on on tap along with nibbles to munch on.

Stop Two: Theo Chocolate's turned a wine and chocolate pairing into a sweet competition. The winning group received, you guessed it, chocolate as the prize. New Yelp Elite Jessica H couldn't resist the tempting salted almond and "went back for thirds and fourths!"

TheoStop Three: No one sliced it better than Christopher T: Pie's pies are "scrumdiliumptious!" Welcoming everyone with a raffle ticket, Pie shared a selection of bites from the sweet sweet apple + key lime pie to the savory brocolli and cheese mini mini pies and served them alongside of Victrola coffee.

Stop Four: The split scoop contest at Bluebird "was just a non stop festival of deliciousness," according to sugar highed Marc M. Yelpers scooped, sampled and selected the best and, in the end, the best name was then turned into Bluebird's monthly feature!

Thanks Fremont businesses and to YOU for joining us. Until next time, SYOY

Things Got Holiday Bazaar In Vegas

Posted by Misti Yang

Where can you find burlesque, neon and robots? Easy: Yelp's Holiday Bazaar at downtown Vegas's creative collective Emergency Arts, the go-to spot for artists, creative-types, and tech entrerepenuers and where Vegas yelpers enjoyed an evening of local shopping and unexpected treats. Guy C sums it up nicely, "After a while it felt like you were just going deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole of increasingly cool things.  Every room yielded a new surprise, an impressive piece of work, a really great person. The event was funny, and interesting, and it had a cool vibe, and great music."

Local coffee shop The Beat served up Peppermint Hot Chocolate, Mulled Spiced Red Wine, Monkey Bread and Homemade Pumpkin Soup, while yelpers perused a bevvy of offerings from local shops, artisans, tech geeks and museums! Emergency Arts galleries Kleven Contemporary, Gamma Gamma, Action Red, Found, Lil' Art Bodega and Get Up opened their doors, and volunteers from The Burlesque Hall of Fame, the Neon Museum and the Smith Center For Performing Arts were on hand to educate a little!

Collage 2
For all the fashionistas, Dee Rubio, Jessica Galindo Leather Couture, Makeshift Apparel, Phatcake Hats, Owl Posse and Slidin' Thru Swag set up shop, and The Fragrance Factory mixed up custom scents all night long. Dog lovers were treated to Pits N Weiners creations, and even the cyclists found friends at the Fremont Bike Clinic. When it was time to take a break, storyteller Aaron Glassman from Storyteller Gigs had a story to share.

Collage 3
And move over Silicon Valley, the Vegas tech scene was in the holiday spirit too. /usr/lib, a brand new library, informal coworking space, and venue for technically minded people and entrepreneurial folk opened its doors for Romotive to showcase their simple and affordable robotic platforms that interact with people in meaningful ways. And, Vegas-based app Rumgr kept everyone in the know with a visual marketplace of items for sale!

Collage 4
A special thanks to Alex Mo Photography for capturing the evening and to PBTH for shooting some fun holiday portraits. DJ Ladyfingers kept us in the mood with festive tunes too! Yelp Baltimore Elites Suit Up for a Magical Night!

Fire-breathing. Sword-swallowing. Fortune telling. Throw in a 5-star caterer and two memorable causes and you get why we called December's elite event "Yelp's Holiday Magic!"

In the spirit of "Yelp Shops Local," Yelp Baltimore Elites and their guests headed to Party Dress in Fell's Point for a magic-filled night. Master of Mysticism, world-record-holder Jared Rydelek shocked the crowd with his crazy contortion, fiery tricks, and artistry of escape, while fortune-teller Mary Shock read what was in the cards for Elites in 2012.

The night benefitted two great causes (Baltimore Child Abuse Center and House of Ruth) and came with a mind-boggling spread of fantastic foods from Water for Chocolate, the evening's caterer. "The potstickers and pulled pork were awesome," says a still-amazed Gary H. "Have you ever watched a TV show that was great, but as each season passed the quality got exponentially worse? Yeah, these events are nothing like that. Quite the opposite, actually." Chef Sean Guy surprised guests further with a special Yelp burst ice sculpture just for the occasion while John Reusing from Bad Decisions manned the bar and loosened up Elites with some lively libations, including Estrella Damm and Daura Beers (always a crowd pleaser!) which definitely kept the night going strong as people entered the photo booth upstairs.

Shannon L summed up her love of the event with lines slick enough to nab a nun: "Damn Yelp Baltimore, you looked GOOD last night! All gussied, primped and polished! You looked so refined stuffing your face with sloppy joe sliders and somehow you looked classy while pulling a lollipop out of a man's nose. Now THAT is some talent. Do you model? You should definitely think about it. Here's my card." Touché, Ms. Shannon. You know where to find us. SYOY!

Sparkly Sactown Elites Celebrate Yelp Shops Local!

Posted by Alex L

Tis the season of giving, and Sacramento's elite met the challenge by selflessy donating to three great local charities as a way to kick off the Yelp Shops Local Giving Pledge in Sacramento. From December 8-11, over a dozen Sacramento businesses will donate 10% of yelper purchases to either Loaves & Fishes, Happy Tails or Horses, Hope & Healing. Last Thursday's gala event at SPARKLE Bridal Couture kicked off the campaign in grand style, with over $300 ADDITIONAL dollars generated for the cause!Picnik collage
SPARKLE's beautiful, modern and spacious shop proved to be the perfect setting for this holiday-themed affair. Naturally, everything about the shindig had to be sparkly, from the outfits to the drinks to the decor! DEEDA Salon provided absolutely free hair and makeup throughout the night! And with Christmas tunes a bumpin', the sparkles only served to enhance the hip shaking and head nodding on the dance floor.Picnik collage2
Three gracious vendors provided sparkling beverages galore! The staff of Heat Shabu Baru was on hand to serve up their famous sparkling sake mojito concotion. Woodchuck Cider donated three flavors of their hard ciders, and Karmere Winery, located in nearby Amador County, served almond peach and raspberry sparkling wines! Scrumptious small bites, including breaded and baked risotto balls, mini spanakopita triangles with creamy dill dip, and crudite platters with creamy dill dip were provided by Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op.Picnik collage3
The night culminated with a big thank you and rounds of applause for the charities and local businesses involved. Anyone who donated that night recieved a raffle ticket and raffle winners got Shop Local t-shirts and gift certificates from SPARKLE, DEEDA, Zocalo Restaurant and Gunther's Ice Cream! There was also a costume contest for the most sparkly outfit, with waves of applause going to the winner, Tara H!Picnik collage4
All in all it was the perfect night to get out of the cold and collectively generate that holiday spirit! Read the reviews to find out more! And check out the pics from Photostudio29!

It's Mathletes vs. Athletes in Denver Yelp-land!

Denver yelpers enjoyed a sporting good time on Wednesday night at Highland Tap & Burger, where folks gathered for a night of geeky goodness and athletic fun at the Mathletes vs. Athletes Elite Event! Yelpers chose which side of the equation to represent and came garbed in gloriously geeky or athletic attire to show their team spirit. And while enjoying these brainy and brawny pursuits guests were kept well sated by Highland Tap with cocktails, beer, wine, and small bites galore!

There were various challenges to test athletic prowess such as rounds of basketball, ring toss, sholf and even a station provided by BOARDLife where yelpers had to put together a part of a skateboard. Not to be outdone, Kelly T came up with 10 of the hardest trivia questions we could have been asked to test the thinking (wo)man's abilities. At the end of the night winners were declared in several categories - best costume, most athletic, brainiest, and best all around competitor. Our winners walked away with some great prized included gift certificates for local restaurants and stores and rousing games such as Banagrams.

Make sure to check out the reviews of the night and browse the fun photos captured by Autumn Cutaia Photography. Until next time yelpers, stay warm out there, Happy Holidays and we'll SYOY (See You On Yelp)!

Tampa Bay Techs (And Dines) Out!

Usually when you head out to eat, the star of the show is the cuisine in front of you. But for the Yelp Elite Squad, Carmel Cafe and Wine Bar gave them more than just delicious dining. It wasn't just the amazing meatball lollipops or the creme brulee that was to die for; it was being able to get in touch with your inner nerd, as at Carmel your menu is an iPad! And yes, this means you can play Connect Four or check your email while awaiting some fantastic "Mod Med" (Carmel's very own term for Modern Mediterranean) cuisine. And you might not believe this... but merging sumptuous food with terrific technology is kind of a yelpers dream.

"From the moment I walked in the staff was extremely attentive, and the bartender even tweeted to me that I couldn't leave without saying 'hi.' Friendly and tech savvy!" cooed Cara B. "I would be doing a disservice not highlighting Carmel's most unique feature. I LOVE ordering off iPads (who doesn't want to see what they're about to order?) and am confident this trend will catch on soon. Way to be early adopters Carmel. Yes, that's the social media geek in me coming out."

"The food samples and Pinot Noir that I experienced almost immediately upon arrival were scrumptious," stated Brad S. "The extra meaty lamb skewers were especially tasty, as were the buttery crab cakes and the rib and portabello mushroom flat-breads. I also enjoyed the meatball lollipops, basically exactly a red-sauced meatball on a stick. In fact, nothing disappointed in any way. I'm not a big dessert fan, but the creme brulee and the chocolate-covered somethings on a stick were a huge hit with the female contingent."

"The entire staff made a consistent effort to showcase a large portion of their menu and they did so in a way that conveyed that they appreciated having us there and wanted to put their best foot forward," moaned Michael Z. "Despite my lack of a sweet tooth, both the truffles and creme brûlée were irresistible.

It was a night to remember, and one we'll all laugh at 50 years from now when we're taking our hoverboards to eat and ordering by letting the waiter read our minds. But until Marty McFly puts us in the DeLorean, we'll have to suffice with Carmel's fabulous food in a fun and friendly environment. Those that were there can share their experiences on the Event Page, or chat about the future you experienced this past Wednesday on the Talk thread.

Until next time, SYOY!!

Edmonton Elites Go Ugly Sweater Chic!

Posted by Brittany

On Wednesday night, gorgeous art and ugly sweaters collided at the Daffodil Gallery. Edmonton Elites got down with Dirty Santa and Frisky Elf martinis and sipped some sweet Grandma's Non-Alcoholic Punch, too!

A trio of tasty cocktails took centre stage, including our favourite, The Canadian Holiday Classic. These special wintery creations got our Elites out of the cold and into the Peppermint Schnapps and whipped cream! And in addition to sips, d'Lish filled our bellies with their addicting savoury and sweet popcorns, the perfect complimentary d'Lish dish.

The art at recently-opened Daffodil was certainly a highlight of the night, but our Elites stole the show with their festive ensembles. Accompanied by a few Falalas and holiday headbands, these made for some epic photobooth photos.

And just when we thought things couldn't get any more festive, the Elites took things one step further with a game of "Pin The Ironic Hipster Mustache on the Iconic Holiday Characters."

Big thanks goes to Karen at The Daffodil Gallery, resident pianist Evan for his seasonal songs, d'Lish for our savoury and sweet treats, and Meryl Smith Lawton for the snazzy shots of the evening. Make sure to check out the fabulous reviews of the event and take a sneak peek at Meryl's captures at the Yelp Edmonton Flickr Page.

Miami Vice-mas In San Diego!

Posted by Danny Wurst

Sure…The action adventure series has been off the air for over two decades, but that didn’t stop SD Yelp from ringing in the holidays Miami Vice-Mas style. Last Thursday over 100 elites went undercover at Davanti Enoteca sporting white suits, shades, and other South Beach attire that started the season more chic than ever before.

Vice 1
Guests investigated the delicious offerings of Little Italy’s newest hotspot featuring menu items such as brussel sprout salad, mascarpone polenta, pork cheek, mushroom pizza, and several sweet desserts. Washed down with a complimentary open bar of beer, wine, and signature cocktails it was an event that Crockett and Tubbs would have certainly approved.

Read all about it and check out the pics. And if you haven’t dropped your review yet, what are you waiting for?

Until next time, See You On Yelp!

Strega & Sparkles Elite Event @ Valentina!

Posted by Josephine B

Last night saw the London Elites make their way to a part of town made (even more) famous by Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts' classic love story, Notting Hill. Yes, the home of the renowned Portobello Market was alive with the sound of yelping as the first of our two spectacular December Elite Events kicked off in style.

Situated neatly on Notting Hill Gate and sharing the corner of Campden Hill Road, Valentina makes her presence known with her distinctive and stylish blue and white signature colours. Flying the flag for excellence and proudly standing independent on the bustling high street. This family run authentic Italian delicatessen, restaurant and shop, aim to 'provide the best store cupboard essentials and Italian regional specialities, as well as serving recipe dishes that have been handed down through their own families for generations.'

On arrival the yelpers were treated to a Prosecco reception, which was followed by wines that were palate-enlivening! William did a wonderful job making sure there wasn't an empty glass in the house - grazie William!

As the wine flowed, so did the treats and goodies from the deli and restaurant: cheeses, hams, breads, chicken and olive oil which is pressed from the family olive groves no less! And to wash it all down, there was of course more wine!

The yummy Antonio handmade us equally delightful hors d'œuvres. The breadsticks wrapped in Panchetta, and the Asiago cheese laid on a thin bread bed drizzled with truffle oil, were both big hits!

The care and attention that was taken was evident, and could be seen in all areas of Valentina. From the Vespas hanging on the walls, to the hand selected wines - which can be purchased from the shop, and for a small corkage, enjoyed with a meal in the restaurant - table for two please!

Up next, we were really spoilt with the sampling of the acclaimed Panettone, which was awarded second place in the Guardian Panettone Christmas Taste Test 2011. Needless to say, it ranked 1st place with the Elites!

After all that sampling some of the elites just had to do a spot of shopping and take some of the delights home. Tisha B opted for a huge Christmas hamper, while Lauren V couldn't leave without some of the beautiful pastries. Looking at the shelves, the London Elites will be feasting on Valentina food and drink for a while!

Antonio, Andre, William, Laura and the whole Valentina team were simply amazing and the night was truly filled with Stars and Sparkles.

A big thanks to you all and to the skilful hand and eye of Phil who captured it all. Check out the photos and peruse his handiwork. Read the reviews and come and talk about what happened the morning after the night before!
