Hamburger Yelper feiern den Spätsommer... eiskalt!

Posted by Sophie Krause

Oreo-Duplo! Hamburger Yelper mögens also unfruchtig-schokoladig.

------

Hamburg´s Yelpers got icecold amidst late Summer in town. But wait... icecold seem to be wrong... actually it´s "yogurtcold". In the FrozenYogurtWelt the got the tastiest cooling while the sun went down. What´s so special about the FrozenYogurt here is that you do not get your icecream with toppings but you mix it all up for your very own icecream. So Yelpers became icecream-designers and invented tastes like mint-white chocolate, blueberry-oreo or plum-marzipan. Of course, we had a very own Yelp-creation as an opener which was strawberry-mango and had just the right colour.

DSC_0014
So, now that we had all the Yelp-creations we had to do a froyo-election. Which flavour was the best one?

Guess! The Yelp flavour of the month is Oreo-Duplo. So, Hamburg´s Yelpers are more chocolatey than fruity :)

Check out the photos and get hungry for froyo.

Bravo à Claire R, Emy-Line C, Fanny D, Christine G, Alexandra T, Sophie H, Camille W, Alex M, Virginie L et Nathalie E !

Marseille plunged into Yelp waters last night with its first ever elite party, Yelp se jette a l’eau (Yelp Takes the Plunge)... Mother Nature gave her thumbs up in the form of one of the most gorgeous indian summer evenings the city has ever seen.

The venue chosen for the occassion perfectly captured what makes locals so proud of their city. Behind the picturesque Vallon des Auffes with its small fishing boats and miniature houses, over 70 Yelpers were lead to the mini-beach of the diving club Avec ou Sans Bulles (With our Without Bubbles). In addition to the warm breeze and gorgeous sunset Yelpers were treated to delicious pizza bites, custom-made Cosmopolitains, loads of exciting French Yelp schwag and even a raffle! Sylvain, the owner of the club, was also on hand to share his passion for this beautiful beach where his boats set out to explore the surrounding sea. “What an excellent party at a wonderful diving club that I knew nothing about,” said veteran Marseillaise, Christine G, who is rarely taken by surprise in this city she knows like the back of her hand.

Picnik collage 2

As the sun was setting, pizzas and cocktails were enjoyed between conversations about the exciting arrival of Yelp in the city. Pizza in Marseille is an institution (invented here, it is said..) so it was the essential component of the first Yelp Marseille party and these pies from Chez Jeannot lived up to their reputation! “I was thrilled to see familiar faces from the site and discover new ones,” said Christine F who is already dying for her next party invite.

“Would you like your cocktail with or without bubbles?” was the question asked to all the guests by Benjamin B and Chloe M at the bar. David and Karim, the genius bartenders at it-bar Le Duke, concocted the Cosmo Yelpy especially for the occasion to be served with our without Champagne bubbles in reference to the name of the venue! Everyone raised their glasses before the lense of sharp shooter Xavier S. “The first Yelp event in Marseille supassed all expectation. Everything that Marseille has to offer — gorgeous weather, yummy food and drink, fun people to talk to and great ambiance — were all there for the occasion” said Alexandra T, clearly smitten.

But what is a party without some fun giveaways?? Upon arrival each guest was given a ticket for a special prize. Mid-way through the party, Eliott and Dune, two of the youngest yelpers at the event helped with the selection of the lucky winners. As the numbers were read off, the winners came to collect their gifts: a deep sea diving lesson with none other that Sylvain, the owner of the diving school!!! “The icing on the cake was cleary raffle” said glowing winner Emy-Line C! Congratulations to all of the ten winners: Claire R, Emy-Line C, Fanny D, Christine G, Alexandra T, Sophie H, Camille W, Alex M, Virginie L and Nathalie E !

If you were at the event, click here to share your impressions of the evening. And don’t miss the fabulous photos of the party here!

Yelp Detroit Talks Trivia and Ann Arbor with "Answer This!" Star Christopher Gorham!

Posted by Annette

Screen shot 2011-09-30 at 1.29.18 AM

"Answer This!" is a classic college story about friends who would rather talk girls, drink beer and play pub trivia than figure out what to do with their lives. This flick is Michigan through and through--shot entirely on the University of Michigan campus and is the first movie the university has ever allowed to use its name (not to mention shoot a scene in a live football game at The Big House!).

Yelp Detroit’s Community Manager Annette J recently got to ask a few questions of Chris Gorham, the star of Answer This! (and tv shows such as "Covert Affairs," "Ugly Betty," and "Popular"). She grilled him on his favorite Ann Arbor haunts, favorite eats, and his real life trivia skills (or lack there of). Check out why this delightful gentleman and his family “fell in love” with A2 during their time filming here and see what his director (and Ann Arbor native) Christopher Farah has to say about some of his responses.

20
Gorham and his costar Arielle Kebbel rollin' through the streets of Ann Arbor's Old West Side

Annette: You recently spent some time in Ann Arbor filming the upcoming film "Answer This!" Can you tell us what you thought of our lovable tree town?

Chris: We, meaning me and my family, absolutely fell in love with the place! We've been back every year, since filming "Answer This!" Ann Arbor has beauty, great coffee, amazing food and football. What else do you need?

A: Not much as far as I'm concerned! Now, in the film you play a trivia virtuoso with the skillz to pay the pub quiz billz. So we have to know--which piece of the Trivial Pursuit pie do you go for first and why?

C: First of all, it's not a pie, it's a playing piece. Second, it's not a piece, it's a wedge. Sheesh. Amateur hour. ;) I can't tell you how many conversations took place on set surrounding Chris Farah trying to explain this to us. I mean, it looks like a pie! Which "wedge" do I go for first? Whichever is closest, I'm horrible at the game.

A: If you were to enter a pub quiz tourney yourself which A2 bar would you want to see that go down in?

C: Well, I'm partial to Ashley's because we spent so much time in there.

[Director's note: that's where we shot most of our pub scenes. The other main bar was the 8 Ball Saloon.]

A: If you could take any Ann Arbor restaurant and transport it back home to Cali with you which one would it be and what would your regular order be?

C: I'd take Zingerman's Deli, put a Comet Coffee inside it and add The Jefferson Market and Cakery's bon bons to the dessert counter. Zingerman's reuben is maybe my favorite sandwich, plus...gulp...there's all that cheese!

A: You've got a lovely wife and 3 kids. Did you guys spend any quality family time exploring the area? If so, what was your favorite adventure?

C: The kids love the Hands-On Museum and, strangely (unless you've been there), the Google offices in Ann Arbor. They also love visiting the 826 Michigan Robot Store and searching the streets for new fairy doors. A bit outside of Ann Arbor is the must-see Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum.

[director's note: we arranged a tour of the Google office for Gorham and his kids, because the kids wanted to see the fairy door there -- it's the only fairy door in Ann Arbor not open to the public. Gorham and our other star Arielle Kebbel also talked to the whole Google staff as part of an informational Q&A / brown-bag lunch thing.]

A: What's the one thing you learned about Michigan after having filmed Answer This! in our fine state?

C: One thing? I learned that the cafeteria in U of M's law quad has a secret room! I'm impressed by this kind of thing.

A: Quick! One last thing: Give us a list of some of your must visits in Ann Arbor and around Detroit!

C:  Comet Coffee; Jefferson Market & Cakery (best bon bons and pancakes ever); Zingerman's Deli (Reuben still my favorite, also my favorite chocolate cake); Ann-Arbor Hands-On Museum; 826 Michigan Robot Store; Downtown Home & Garden (lot's of hats among other great things); Michigan Theater (!); The Big House; Fairy Doors; Washtenaw Dairy (best donuts and kids love Superman ice cream); Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum (must see!); The Detroit Zoo.

[director's note: Zingerman's created a sandwich for Gorham called "Chris Gorham's Answer This!" during art fair. It was basically a reuben, but with a slice of pickle in it and on sour dough -- he really does love that reuben.]

-------

"Answer This!: was written and directed by Ann Arbor native Christopher Farah. The film stars Christopher Gorham (“Covert Affairs”), Arielle Kebbel (“Vampire Diaries”), Chris Parnell (“30 Rock,” “SNL”), Kip Pardue (“Remember the Titans”) and U-M Professor Ralph Williams. It premieres on Friday, October 14th but you can attend the star-studded world premiere on October 13 at the Emagine Royal Oak Theater. Buy tickets at answerthismovie.com.

Yelp Detroit is also giving away a limited number of tickets to a special Funny Or Die screening at The Michigan Theatre on October 23rd as part of the Yelp Detroit Culture Club! Featuring 10 minutes of exclusive, never-before-seen video clips from FOD and a Q&A with the film’s producer Mike Farah and celebrity guest Chris Parnell  ("30 Rock," "Saturday Night Live"). RSVP to win tickets here or buy them yourself at answerthismovie.com.

Yelp Baltimore Elites "Yelp Around the World!"

Posted by Elsa M.

A trip around the globe in a couple of hours with no jetlag and just a few (ok, maybe more) hangovers! Not too shabby, Yelp Baltimore. Not too shabby at all.

"Walking in and seeing that giant globe twirling in the air and passports on the table....I knew the night was going to be a memorable one," reflects Lynn K.

_MKC8783

Yelp Elites packed their Yelp totes for “Yelp Around the World” at Howard’s of Mt. Vernon last night. The former deli has expanded and completely changed up the menu to include American, Italian, Chinese, Thai, and Indian-inspired dinner entrees. Yelp Baltimore elites dined on them all, many of which highlighted Howard’s of Mt. Vernon’s homemade curry! Dan A was nearly knocked out by it all: "I remember when the servers opened the lids to the food and I was hit by the smell of the food. It was like getting hit by a truck of awesomeness."

_MKC8790 _MKC8845 _MKC8763 _MKC8890

"The chicken tikka masala was so tender and flavorful and quite perfectly paired with the rice," says Michelle H. "The Estrella Damm Daura beer was so smooth - I need to hunt down a case or two the next time I'm at a liquor store!" Mike F was just as impressed with the service as he was the food: "I waited for nothing; the service was prompt and genuinely friendly."

_MKC8911 _MKC8720_MKC8906 _MKC8920

Elites put their mental muscle to the test with a world trivia challenge (Who knew Iran was the ‘nose job capital of the world?!) and even faced off against each other in a battle over who has eaten the most exotic food (“Jungle Rat” and "Monkey Brains" tied for first with “scorpion lollypops” a close second). Winners got tickets to another cultural treat next weekend: The Maryland Oktoberfest! Scorpion-eater Gary H claims the trivia caught him "totally off guard," but that "it was a TON of fun." He walked home a winner, nontheless. We had to give him something for having guts to admit he once ate what many a Fear Factor constentant wouldn't! That's just how Yelp Baltimore Elites roll.  What can I say? :)

SF Yelpers Gets Historic at Jasper's!

Many would attest there's no better way to celebrate warm nights in the city than with a cold refreshing cocktail and good company. And that's just what went down at Yelp's Historic Yelp Elite Event at Jasper's Corner Tap and Kitchen last night.

Jasper's is inspired by one of San Francisco's first surveyors, the legendary Jasper O' Farrell. Jasper's pays homage to the history and culture of the social city Jasper O'Farrell envisioned by putting interesting twists on classic pub food, and through their extensive beer selection and their notable cocktail menu.

Concurrently, yelpers paid homage to ol' Jasper O'Farrell by donning outfits depicting their favorite historical figures! From stewardess outfits, to fun bunny costumes, to two girls dressed as the famous "We Can Do It" poster, yelpers celebrated the theme with some unique get-ups. Upon arrival, yelpers were able to learn more about the wonderful local charity Wonder Dog Rescue, staffed by their awesome volunteer Morita who came equipped with a slew of great information and with a ton of adorable puppy pictures.

The gorgeous wood adorned bar boasted three remarkable drinks which captured the essence of Jasper's perfectly. There was an Improved Manhattan with Wild Turkey Bourbon, an Espolon Paloma, as well as Negroni on tap (yes, on tap!).  Jasper's not only delighted yelpers with their formidable drinks, but they also satiated appetites with samples from their gastropub menu. Well known for their deviled eggs, their staff passed around an impressive Deviled Egg Trio - which included a Cesaer Salad Deviled Egg, a Garden Medley Egg, as well as a Spicy Romesco Egg. The chef revealed at the end of the night that they went through 800 eggs! The kitchen also showcased house made sausage with yellow mustard, house cured sausage on crostini, as well as some tantalizing homemade caramel corn in miniature boxes for yelpers to take away with them.

Pittsburgh Elites Welcome The Roaring 20's @ Cioppino!

Posted by Rachel Carlson

The Pittsburgh Elite Squad put on their best flapper flare and most dazzling dapper attire for Yelp's Dapper & Dames Elite Event at Cioppino where they were puttin' on the Ritz for all to see! Jaime J can attest "Everyone looked great and really embraced the theme - so much fun to dress up on a day that's not Halloween! I got to meet more Yelpers this time and everyone was so fun and friendly."

"Cioppino outdid itself," exclaims Linda W. "Those adorable little sliders were first rate...the lamb burgers with sweet caramelized onions and smooth, tangy gorgonzola cheese perched atop were succulent little morsels of goodness." Not only did guests get to nom on some delicious Elysian Fields Farm Lamb Mini's, but they were also able to sample Pork Sliders, Risotto Fritters and Margarita Pizza.

"Being a +1 has never been so much fun," the debonair Ricardo T recalls. "The drinks held back no punches on equal parts flavor and equal parts kick." Elites were able to sample creamy RumChata martini's such as the Tiramisu, Coconut Macaroon and White Russian as well as the Dirty Dame Martini compliments of Boyd & Blair Potato Vodka. This was anything but speakeasy!

Queens Elites celebrate Tiki Tuesday @ The Astor Room!

Posted by Jando

Summer might be over, but Queens Yelp didn't get the memo. Elite Yelpers of the Qborough were out in full force for an island experience of tropical proportions in the name of Tiki Tuesday at The Astor Room.

Yelp.Tiki.Banner01

The Astor Room was terrifically tiki'd out for Yelp's finest, offering a vast bar, tricked out lounge, and some of the best luau treats in Queens. Vikki M was impressed with the food and service, noting the "pork tenderloin, pork dumplings, and chicken with Polynesian sauce were good, great and greater. There was no shortage of snacks with the amazing Astor room staff consistently making rounds with trays and a smile."

Yelp.Tiki.Banner04

Yelpers are a thirsty bunch and the drinks were a hit. Mai tai and planter's punch cocktails were blessed with some of the finest Jamaican rum, courtesy of Appleton Estate, which had Elites feeling nice and toasty. Lara G sums it up best: "Appleton Estate Rum had everyone chanting "ruummm" instead of "ohmm" at the next morning's yoga class."

Yelp.Tiki.Banner02

After a few cocktails, Queens' best Yelpers walked into a tiki photo booth, courtesy of Sweet Booths, where they put their on their best smile after getting lei'd once, twice, even three times. The island tunes of the Fisherman band featuring Kitty Chow was a hulu highlight of singing, dancing, and twirling; inspiring Yelpers to form a limbo contest and conga line. Jason R is right on the money when he says "sprinkle in an authentic Hawaiian band and this night went from good to great." He's onto something, because Tiki Tuesday might have just been the greatest Tuesday on Yelp record.

Yelp.Tiki.Banner03
Hats off to The Astor Room, Appleton Estate Rum, Sweet Booths, Kitty Chow and the Fisherman Band for making this Queens Elite Event one to remember. Still feening for more? Yelp this event and check out the galleries for both Flickr and Sweet Booths. Be sure to get on the list for the Yelp Elite Events in October and keep your Elite dial tuned to Yelp Queens.

Yelp Invades North Bay Yelp Elite Event @ Vin Antico

It's been awhile since the North Bay has had any Yelp love, so this past Saturday afternoon , yelpers from all across the Bay made their way to sunny San Rafael to Vin Antico for an intimate Yelp Elite event.

Vin Antico is a modern trattoria and wine bar with a focus on simply prepared ingredients just picked from local farms. Their outstanding Italian food is often seasonal, so their menu is constantly rotating with a slew of dishes any locavore would love. Their pasta and pizza dough are all made by hand and with organic ingredients.

At the event, Vin Antico's wine director Tyler McNich and staff were on hand with a formidable spread of piquant passed bites. Guests were able to sample a multitude of dazzling seasoned oysters – including one one with Prosecco mignonette shrimp relish and tobiko citrus gelee! Mini bruschetta topped with bacon, burrata cheese, heirloom tomato and basil, corn cakes adorned with spicy shrimp and fresh vegetables, beef tartare, flat bread pizza with sausage, ricotta, olives, tomato sauce and a grated cheese trio also made it's way to the dining room from the open kitchen at Vin Antico, proving to be quite the way to spend a weekend in San Rafael.

Vin collage 1

To compliment Vin Antico's organic Italian bites was Navarro Vineyard's new yet to be launched wine called Hungry Hollow (it was the first time that they'd ever poured Hungry Hollow at an event before!) Hungry Hollow follows the tradition of worthy, local wine at prices every thrifty and hard-working man or woman can afford. Their grapes are grown in Mendocino County and the winemaking is done in the area as well. Eric B was a "big fan of their dry Gewürztraminer and also enjoyed their Riesling and Syrah." After he got home he even ordered the Hungry Hollow Introductory Special (3 different bottles delivered to his door for $32.15 including sales tax).

Providence Elites Get Down at a Yelp Hoedown!

Posted by Hilary H

The Providence Yelp Elite Squad mounted up and rode into the legendary Olneyville New York System for one humdinger of a hoedown on Tuesday night at Yelp's Hot Wiener Hoedown!

Wienercollage1
Elites went 'all the way' with their hot wieners all night long! The amazing and entertaining crew of chefs behind the counter were "slingin' those dogs on a steady, meaty stream while setting a welcoming, friendly tone" that kept Carly B lassoed in.

Wienercollage4
Narragansett Beer Co. was there to keep those Elite whistles wet with copious amounts of the RI staple brew, "some of the best beer in Rhode Island" according to Jennifer E. "This hoedown throw-down was pretty epic... a lil rootin', tootin', and drinken' with a side of coffee milk, fries and wieners" that Jay D only has two words for, ya'll: "giddy up!"

Wienercollage3
All Jen H. needed on this Tuesday night "was a stool at the counter of Olneyville, a hot weiner, a cold 'Gansett in a Yelp cozie, and a whole bunch of my fellow Yelpers to share it with. I never thought I'd say it, but I'm a weiner gal, y'all!" Get along, little doggie!

Philadelphia Elites Score At Lucky Strike!

Posted by Michelle C

Philadelphia ushered in its largest Yelp Elite Event of the year on Monday night at Lucky Strike Lanes. From the moment yelpers crossed the threshold, servers were eagerly waiting to offer bottled beer and glasses of wine. Bowling shoes were picked up and the many lanes filled with the quickness. Pool tables were occupied throughout the night, while others chose to simply chill in the lounge area, taking in the Phillies game.

Bowling1 Bowling2
Pool1 Pool2
Stationed snacks and passed hors d' oeuvres including brie, apple and bacon quesadillas, vegetable dumplings, fried mac and cheese bites and pizza were more than plentiful throughout the evening. Yelp koozies lied in waiting for people to insulate their beers.

A raffle was held and a gift certificate for a bowling party for eight was awarded to Meg B's guest, Jason. And in a surprise twist, another gift certificate was awarded to the bowler with the lowest score in game 1: elite yelper Jessica M! Keep practicing, Jess!

The winners!

Reviews are pouring in and elite yelper Yiwen S believed this YEE to be "THE BEST elite event so far." It wouldn't have been possible without the generosity of Lucky Strike and their incredibly friendly staff who worked the room tirelessly throughout the party to make sure guests were happy. Extra thanks to Kimberly, Joshua and Daniel of Lucky Strike Lanes Philadelphia, plus Yelp intern Allison B for holding it down at the check-in table.

KC Elites Sizzle At Original Juan!

Posted by Joi

It was a hot time in Kansas City this past Saturday evening when the Elite squad and their guests gathered at Original Juan Specialty Foods for All Fired Up!

Allfired001   Photo by Monica Cole Photo by Monica Cole

Was anyone up for a contest to see who was the hottest? Uh yeah! We're not talking review writing right now, we're talking sauce! After a few tastes of many hot sauces and salsas, each increasing in heat and scovilles... well, let's let the pictures do the talking:

Allfired17   Allfired14 Allfired28

Ouch! Thankfully, there was the cheesecake dip, just in case things got too hot to handle. And lucky for us, 360 Beverages were on hand to cool things down, along with cocktails made with local brands, Clear 10 Vodka and High Plains Distillery (whose Bloody Marys/Marias were also rather caliente!)

Even those not down with turning their tongues on fire found that there was something mouth-watering (if not eye-watering), whether that be delish BBQ burnt ends and beans from Zarda or various cheeses, dips and snacks from Original Juan Specialty Foods. There were also tasting stations of BBQ sauces, rubs/seasonings and an area where we could test the unreleased products. Original Juan allowed us a glimpse into their testing kitchen and enormous factory so we could see what goes on behind the scenes. Of course yelpers are all about the process of what goes into making everything so delicious!

And then there was the array of incredible raffle prizes, which included an Original Juan gift basket, a $50 gift certificate, a box of the highly-anticipated unreleased products, and bottles from High Plains and Clear 10 Vodka.

"First Yelp Party = happy yelper," Zach G. "This was an awesome evening. I had no idea what to expect coming to this place, since I had never heard of it before. I can't believe how many times I have driven past this place, never knowing what magic stood behind the doors." Right on, for that's what these parties are all about!

Thank you to Lindsay and Joe and the entire amazing staff at Original Juan Specialty Food, Geoff and Sierra of High Plains Distillery, Clear 10 Vodka, 360 Beverages and WiredBBQ.com for providing a live video feed.

Time to fan the heat: check out more photos from Monica Cole on the Yelp flickr page and by Daniel Hu. Be sure and read the reviews for even more sizzlin' recaps.

Halifax Elites Get Brunched Up At Morris East!

Posted by Ben

The Saturday morning alarm clock never rang so sweetly as it did this past weekend when a dozen Halifax Elites made their way to market, to market for the One-Two Brunch Elite Event!

20110923-YelpMorrisEast-01

On special invite from the wood-fired wizards of Morris East, yelpers like Rhia P braved the fall drizzle for a sneak peak of the Halifamous pizzeria's new booth at the Seaport Farmers Market.

Our reward? A wonderful chat with owner Jennie Dobbs who was happy to hand out insider info on what we can expect from their kitchen in the new year, not to mention incredible snacks like "salt caramel tarts, pork rilettes, and spritzers" to get the day off to a delicious start.

Market

After making countless other market-goers jealous, we lived out a Saturday morning tradition en masse, walk-of-shaming our way to the permanent home of Morris East's fantastic feasts! And, of course, we were not disappointed.

Their in-house mixologist had already whipped up a batch of Asian Pear Fizz cocktails, a twisted pear mimosa made with "local pear cardamom cordial and madagascar vanilla cognac" before being topped off with Prosecco. Asheley R is bang-on when she calls the concoction "simply scrumptious," on the one hand, and "rather dangerous" on the other.

WalkanddrinkAfter a quick toast, it was time for the highly anticipated second brunch of the morning. And friends? This wasn't your average cold slice from the fridge the morning-after...

The Big Breakfast Pizza that had Lesley-Anne S "totally intrigued" was everything you could want and more: tomato, mozzarella, spinach, portobello, house-made bacon, greens and a fried egg, earning only the highest of internet praise: "it tasted amazeballs!" Meanwhile, an Apple & Pulled Pork Pizza with crispy sage and Nova Scotian apple chutney, a vegetarian medley topped with balsamic and goat's cheese, and a gorgeous vegan mushroom 'za gave healthy competition for the nicest slice!

Food
The event reviews couldn't even contain the love from our yelpers after this brunchtastic morning; Jill M was back for dinner that night, and Adam S went back "the next day. It was even better. Likely because I didn't have to share anything."

Catch all the early morning goodness in the photo gallery courtesy of the talented and lovely Michelle Doucette, and make sure you're on the list for Halifax's next elite event.

Until next time, see you on Yelp!

The Yelp Cannery, A Yelp Elite Squad Experience in Indianapolis

This is the Yelp Indy Elite Squad, you see? We're heading to The Yelp Cannery, you see? That's right, we're turning Sun King Brewery into an after-hours speakeasy, with Big Green Bistro (the new, private dining mobile food bistro) and Q Tonic, and we're not going to hear a peep from you, you hear?

Yelp Indy Elite Collage -- 9262011 -- 1

Elite Squad, tie your black tie, knock twice, and show us your green egg to get in the door. Then, once you're in get your Giggle Water: a prohibition citrus punch crafted by the BGB with Sun King Cream Ale. Refill your jar with Sun King's house beers: from Osiris Pale Ale to Wee Mac Scotch Ale.

Yelp Indy Elite Collage -- 92611 -- 2

Meet us in the corner for some craft sodas featuring Q Tonic & Q Ginger to tickle the back of your throat. The Q-ito: hand-picked Peruvian Quinine tonic, muddled lime juice, mint & bourbon smoked mint sugar, and The Q Tonic Fizz (shook with fresh egg whites). The Big Green Bistro will goose you with Smoking Goose bruschetta, Korean spicy short rib tacos, local cornmeal and mushroom polenta and the Hotsy-Totsy pineapple cocunut creme anglaise cake.

Once you've had your laughs, your local beer swill and grilled gifts, (safely, discreetly) Charleston your way home. Once these brewery lights go off, the Yelp Cannery, A Yelp Elite Squad Experience never happened you hear.

Who are we foolin' of course it did (with proof from Solar Flare Photography photos here and 5-star reviews here).

Miami Elites Sneak A Peak At vitaminwater uncapped LIVE!

Posted by Monica

Last Thursday, Yelp Miami elites lined up along the red carpet in preparation for VIP access to vitaminwater uncapped LIVE. This 4-day series boasting 10 free parties, with all the hottest in Miami talent, had all the local cognoscenti vying for a spot on the list. But being a Yelp Elite, they had no problem scoring a spot on the list and even snagging a weekend badge for VIP access.

Picnik 1

The elite event kicked off at 7pm at Miami's most awesomely cool music venue, The Stage. During the two-hour VIP Yelp Elite bash, bikini models posed atop boxes donning CameloPardus Swimwear, DJ Joe Dert mashed up the mashable jams, local graffiti artist, Abstrk, showed off his mad skills with a live piece while elites got to try their hand-eye coordination on the ping pong table, thanks to Chalk. Of course, it's no party without the proper sustenance and liquid lubrication, and for that we called upon Michael's Genuine to showcase their new food cart concept and Cupcake Vodka to help give those yummy vitaminwater flavors a little vodka spike!

Picnik 3

As Sergio F can elaborate, "Picture a dark urban area, close too an overpass... on a weekday. You don't see anything from the main thoroughfare, but wait, is that music? Is there a line near there... in an alley? Yes! The very cool Stage was rocking with great DJ mixes and a live jazz/rock/hiphop fusion by the kicking local band ArtOfficial" and all the funky folk in town were just waiting to get a taste of vitaminwater uncapped LIVE!

Picnik 2

Wondering where you can see more of the (somewhat scandalous) photos and read the reviews? Check out the Yelp Miami Flickr set for more captured action thanks to PhotoBokeh and see what all the elites are still buzzing about here!

Yelp's French Connection @ Le Grand Bistro

On Wednesday evening, 150 Denver Elites and their guests were warmly welcomed into the newly open Le Grand Bistro & Oyster Bar for Yelp's French Connection! Dressed in black and white stripes or berets of all colors and twirling their (sometimes fake) mustaches yelpers were treated to tray after tray of amuse-bouche deliciousness from Le Grand's kitchen including fresh oysters, house-cured bacon, pâté, ratatouille bruschetta, steak tartare, truffle craime freche on a curled crisp, and much, much more.

Blog1
303 Vodka and Rob's Mountain Gin were also in the mix, literally as they were the basis for the drink of the night called Rob's Kiss, a cocktail "so deliciously intoxicating that Michael S claims he totally would have made out with that dude" if they were to meet. But, with bartenders as talented as the ones at Le Grand and spirits as lovely as those distilled locally in Colorado, every cocktail ordered up was a taste sensation for yelpers.

Blog 2
Make sure you peep the photos to see all the amazing food, drinks, and fun. And don't forget to check out the reviews while you're at it.

Jusqu'à la prochaine fois (until next time), SYOY (See You On Yelp) party people!

Orlando Elites Enjoy A Lazy Sunday

Posted by Colleen Burns

Orlando knows how to rock the Sunday evening and this month we spent it OLV and and experienced the "Cafe we LOV-ed!"

It was about time to sit back, get together and just relax to enjoy good wine and friends and eat delicious food! We took over OLV which was was created out of the sense that we all need a “third place” – a place that’s not our office, or our living room, but where we can feel just as comfortable... and that we did!

"I had so much fun at the OLV Elite event! First off, I love OLV! I have been wanting to try it and it was pretty fantastic. The employees were very attentive and the environment was so laid back & chill." -Elizabeth F

Picnik collage2
We enjoyed various Canon Road wines and Yuengling drafts to celebrate their Toast To Thursday deals. We also dined on various dishes from hummus, fruits and cheeses, chicken curry salad, beef empanadas, crab cakes and various freshly made flatbreads!

"OLV is a great place, I felt very relaxed and at home in their evironment. We really enjoyed the event there. Playing games with fellow Yelpers and sampling their many various menu items was a real treat. I can't wait to return." - Rob W

Local musician, Chris Glover graced us with his guitar and singing skills with fabulous cover songs and gorgeous originals.

Picnik collage

"Chris Glover provided audible entertainment on the acoustic guitar covering some rocking good songs. I LOVE covers and he did a spectacular job with his selection. Check him out. Chris Glover and the Sunday Riders. Listened to his CD on the way back to Tampa after the event." -Mark A.

We played tons of boards games for chances to win tickets to various shows for The Yelp Culture Club before general public had a go! There was Operation! Family Guy style, Guess Who?, Mad Gab and other fun stuff.

Overall a great evening of pure fun with a fabulous community and local business! A huge thanks to our fabulous photographer, Jim White was mingling with the yelpers and captured the evening with shots of all sorts. Check all the photos out here. If you want to catch more of the event buzz, hop over to the event listing to read all about the excitement from your fellow yelpers.

DC Elites Get Freaky At Grand Central

Posted by Kristin Mink

Wondrous marvels and fantastical feats were on display at Grand Central this week as over 120 brave Elites stepped right up to enter Yelp's Carnival Fun-House! First-timer Jess Y said it best: "Yelp DC's got it going on!"

 Blog1

Theresa D "wasn't sure what to expect with the carnival theme, but the night had all the carnival fun and thankfully none of the creepy clowns. Jared Rydelek's amazing contortions were freaky enough!" Jenny T had an educational takeaway: "I now believe that it is possible to put a screwdriver in my nostril and a sword down my throat....Still never gonna try it." Aw, c'mon, Jenny!

Screwdrivers, swords and delightfully disturbing bodily manipulations weren't the only surprising sights this Tuesday. Danny V thought "Madame Mims was esoterically awesome," and he was "razzle-dazzled" by "Josh Norris, the handsome and charismatic magician" who "performed magic within arm's length - no tricks revealed!" The night made quite an impact: "Gosh, I lost my elite event virginity and I'm, like, a total whorebag now.

Blog3

Steve L was thrilled to be "able to try the local brew courtesy of DC Brau," and Toya G grooved on the "sweet and fruity" Stoli cocktails featuring white pomegranik and wild cherri vodka. Luckily for Nicole L and her fellow imbibing Elites, "the awesome Grand Central was a great host, serving yelpers generously with all kinds of tasty food (wings, chicken strips, hummus, shrimp poppers)!"

Blog4
Blog5
Thanks to all the Elites for coming out and getting down, and to photographer Jeff Martin for capturing it all on camera! Be sure to check out Yelp's flickr page for the complete spread of photos, and read all the full reviews on the event page!

Until next time, keep those screwdrivers outta your nose (or don't)!

Manhattan Elites Murder It at Albert Hall Tavern

It was a dark and stormy night. Members of the Yelp Elite Squad descended upon a dim, candlelit tavern deep in Hell's Kitchen to meet for one of their regular secret society meetings. Er, or some sort of party function.

Screen shot 2011-09-23 at 10.19.23 AM Screen shot 2011-09-23 at 10.25.08 AM Screen shot 2011-09-23 at 10.37.07 AM
Dressed to the nines and feeling fine, Elites prepared for an evening affair at Albert Hall Tavern just like any other. That is until venturing a bit further inside where a dramatic storyline took hold of unsuspecting guests, courtesy of the professionals at Manhattan's very own Murder Mystery Company. Richard D had "no idea what was in store" when he stepped through the door, though in no time he was acting a (homicidal) fool as Eric Shun -- say that three times fast. To be sure, this was one of veteran yelper, Alyvia M's "favorite Elite-only events. Everything from the bar/bartenders and service, food, atmosphere, location, attendees to the Four Roses Bourbon, this one had it all! We even saw some bloodshed. I mean, who doesn't like a little murder with their bourbon?"

Platters of spicy braised short rib sliders, tuna tartare bruschetta delicious Artichoke dip crostinis... Margaret T couldn't get enough of the "calamari salad that was - as they say in California in the 90's - Da Bomb! Crispy, herby, dressed perfectly." Even "the hot wings were the best she's ever had...trust; She's the leading expert on hot wings."

Screen shot 2011-09-23 at 10.39.16 AM Screen shot 2011-09-23 at 10.36.26 AM Screen shot 2011-09-23 at 10.20.40 AM
Not hot enough for ya? Then the masters behind the bar paired all these extra awesome eats with three featured Four Roses Bourbon cocktails: the creamy Millstone, classic Mint Julep and a Midtown man drink with murderous intentions. The result: "Holy crap, awesomest event ever!"

Screen shot 2011-09-23 at 10.24.20 AM Screen shot 2011-09-23 at 10.20.26 AM Screen shot 2011-09-23 at 10.36.06 AM
Thanks to the Albert Hall Tavern crew, the theatrical genius behind Murder Myster Co. and the amazing makers of Four Roses Bourbon. And of course, thank you to the Elites and who made the evening magic. Check out Madison McGraw's stunning photos here for a taste of all the action. For reviews of the evening, and perhaps some clues, check out the event page and Yelp it!

Dallas Elites Let Their HAIR Down!

Peace, Love, and Yelp was in the air last night as the Dallas Elite squad channeled their psychedelic side and let their hippie side shine for the celebration of the Let Your HAIR Down Elite Event.

IMG_3574   IMG_3580

Over 90 Yelpers gathered at the stunning Winspear Opera House in the AT&T Performing Arts Center for the award-winning production. There was merry mingling, imbibing, and exciting chatter in the beautiful lobby, pre-show.

You can't say Hippie without saying Flower. Free love was passed throughout the evening in the form of flowers for our yelpy flower children. Post show, we strolled over to Jorge's for some margarita's and nachos. The weather welcomed some lovely times on the patio as we schmoozed and discussed our thoughts on the smash hit musical. Check out what elites had to say about all the fun here!

Soirée Elite Chic Fast Food chez Fripesketchup pour les Yelpeurs Lyonnais

Posted by Camille L

Yesterday night over 120 Lyonnais yelpers came out to celebrate the rentrée and the first Yelp elite party in Lyon at the very chic Fripesketchup shop (for non French speaking, a pun on "Frites ketchup", fries and ketchup, fripes meaning vintage clothes !). No French fries tonight though, but ketchup... served in the form of custom-made “Yelpy Ketchupy Bloody Mary” cocktails, along with Bubble Tea, finger foods and lots of conversation. “Trendy but totally unintimidating, the location was super impressive,” enthused Alexandra D, who like the other guests got a personalized tour of the chic vintage boutique by the father-daughter owners of the shop, Olivier and Pauline.

The party got off to a quick start with the guests exploring the multitude of drinks and nibbles served downstairs. On the menu: Bubble Teas prepared on site in six different flavors by Bubble Fever, cool Wodka Wyborowa cocktails prepared by Marc, the dandy bartender from one of the best cocktail bars in the city, L'Antiquaire, and mini-burgers from De Bons Plats Chez Vous. “What an awesome evening,” raved Monique V, who went crazy for the “great setting, BUBBLE TEA (yes, this should be in capital letters) and wonderful people all around. I can't wait for the next one”

As the party spilled out onto the street, guests marveled over their favorite vintage finds and Bubble Tea flavors and even spotted a reality-TV star among the crowd!  As Philippe H puts it "a great party that allowed me to reconnect with familiar faces and witness the Lyon Yelp community grow before my eyes."

Charlotte Elites Shine At The 2011 Yelpy Awards

Posted by Nicole W

Last week's Emmy Awards had nothing on the celebrayelpies who graced us with their presence at The 2011 Yelpy Awards! Thanks to Upstream, a plethora of Elites and their distinguished guests enjoyed a beautiful night of bites, bevvies and seven very coveted awards.

Yelp Charlotte Elite Collage - September 21, 2011_5
Guests were escorted to the patio for a variety of delicious nibbles like watermelon and tuna skewers, curry chicken springrolls and white shrimp and pineapple ceviche. All of the bites were washed down with plenty of libations. New Belgium rocked out with four of its ales including Abbey, Hoptober, Ranger and, of course, Fat  Tire. The winos of the group were well taken care of by Constellation Brands who provided Estancia Pinor Noir and Toasted Head Chardonnay.

Yelp Charlotte Elite Collage - September 21, 2011

In between the snacking and mingling, guests visited the Stila Cosmetics corner where their red carpet looked was refreshed for the many gorgeous photos to come. Whether it was an impromtu paparazzi photo on the patio or a proper pic in front of the Yelp backdrop, everyone looked stunning behind the lens thanks to Tonya P, of Poprock Photography, and Ben G.

Yelp Charlotte Elite Collage - September 21, 2011_3
After all were sufficiently imbibed and snacked away, the official Yelpy Awards presentation began. Seven awards were handed out including Most Useful, Funniest, Coolest, Biggest Foodie, Best Compliments, Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Elite. Acceptance speeches ranged from Shauna H thanking the crowd to Peggy C thanking the delightful establishments of Charlotte for making her reviews so funny. But it was Chad E who took home the highly coveted MVE award, complete with a custom made visor!

Kickin' Off Yelp Eats For Hunger Relief In Calgary

Posted by Wendy

Yelpers unite! We kicked off Yelp Eats For Hunger Relief in Calgary with a rockin’ launch party at Ming. From specialty martinis to a spread fit to feed any yelping-worthy palate, guests were treated to the better than best from this communist-themed, Yelp-approved, local cocktail hotspot. It's all for a wicked cause as we start out a week of good eating and good deeding in support of the 10,000 Kids Project and Brown Bagging It For Calgary's Kids.

Sept blog 1
Crystal E recounts the evening: “Tasty drinks, delicious snacks, and great people all around-what more could you want? A photo booth with costumes you say...?” You bet your boots! And we can’t forget the whirling, twirling hula hooper!

Sept blog 2
The Yelper, the Passiontini and the Jamaican Storm had guests juiced and jazzed over these feature drinks while quizzical server James kept Elites entertained with a pop quiz every time he came around. The best part, the Skyy Vodka consumed as part of our martinis was said to be purer than other leading vodkas, which meant no headaches for this crew–"at least, not from the vodka. Whatever else you drink is your onus." You said it, Tiffany N!

Sept blog 3

While some guests fitted themselves up for a photo courtesy of costumes from The Costume Shoppe, others filled themselves up with anything from ginger beef (a family recipe) to spring rolls. Carol K “loaded” her plate with chicken wings and admits, “I probably ate 10 chickens.”

Reginald T relishes he’s found “a new current favourite in the city.”

Yelp Eats Week has begun! Now, mosey on out to visit any of the equally, mouthwateringly wonderful Yelp Eats restos. From now til Sunday, for every $30 your table spends, the restaurant will donate $10 to the 10,000 Kids Project in support of Brown Bagging It For Calgary’s Kids. That translates to feeding one child for two weeks! Just drop your receipt into the Yelp Eats box on location at the end of your meal. Let’s get eating. Forks up, Calgary!

Want more details? Check out the party reviews and photos!

Big thanks to Voyager Photography for some stellar party photos!

See you next time!

Boston Elites Bear Witness To A Real Yelp Wedding!

Posted by Damien S

We've thrown a number of parties here in Boston: 80s proms, White Hot jams, brass-wrapped circuses (circii?) and chocolate-coated spectacles. Then on Monday, we leveled up and showed the strength of our community. For the first time in Yelp's history, we hosted a real-life, honest-to-goodness wedding. And what better spot than a candlepin alley/organic pizza joint!

  Wedding1

Dave "Papercut" F and Diana "Chisel" R merged their love of Yelp, bowling, cupcakes, hard cider, the Deathray Davies and, well, each other by exchanging vows in front of family plus 130 of their closest (and newest!) friends. The couple originally planned to hold the wedding and reception at Davis Square favorite Flatbread Company for it's unique spin on organic, wood-fired pizzas and old school candlepin action.

Wedding2

So how did it become a Yelp event? Dave spills it: "At first (the idea) was kind of funny, but then it started to make a lot of sense.  Over the last year and a half, I've been pretty active in the Yelp community.  Diana and I have made lots of friends by going to various events in that time, and many of the people we would have invited to the wedding would have been people from Yelp anyway.  Doing this event gave us a chance to make the wedding what we wanted: a fun time to celebrate with all of our friends and family."

Wedding3

And a fun time it was! Following the short-but-sweet ceremony, guests were treated to a neverending supply of delcious flatbreads and salads, as well as a barrage of Crispin hard cider to keep the whistles whet. Between competitive strings of little ball bowling and mugging their best booth face for the Photo Fun Box, yelpers summoned a collective sweet tooth, subsequently sated by a tower of Sweet cupcakes. Shwoopy factoid: Dave proposed to Diana over the Sweet cupcake course of an über-loveydovey picnic. Get us tissues!

Wedding4

Before heading out, guests offered Marriage Quick Tips around a coupley framed pic, jotted down romantic couplets for their photobook and packed Chinese take-out boxes with fortune cookie soaps and custom lip balms. Pro-grade photos provided by the lens wizard Tatsu I (be sure to tag the twin albums on Facebook) and the reviews of this blessed union of souls are rolling in. But enough about us, all the best to the newlyweds!

Forever the Bridesmaid,

End

Damien S (with assist love to Coco K and Hilary H!)

LA East Cowboys or Aliens Elite Event

One Elite event isn't enough for LA East Elites, so on Saturday, September 17, the squad did a double feature of summer blockbuster proportions in Sherman Oaks.

The first set dusted off their cowboy hats and boots with the spurs for a BBQ Hoedown that involved a feast of smoky meats, lick-worthy sides, and a few good draught beers for good measure. Smoke City Market created a hefty plate of its finest menu offerings like brisket, sausage, chicken, turkey, beans, mac 'n cheese, slaw, and Texas caviar potato salad that left guests grinning from ear to ear with full bellies. A few brave souls saved room to participate in a rib eating contest. Contestants bowled over a trough of tender, juicy pork ribs to see who could leave the most bones dry in 5 minutes. Although a valiant effort by everyone who stepped up to the plate, Adolfo H walked away the winner by scarffing down 12 ribs. It was a honky tonk of an afternoon, and you can ready the reviews right here, cowboy!

Picnik collage2

Then just down the road, an entirely different group channeled their inner ET for an out of this world alien-themed event at The Oaks Tavern. Unidentified flying objects dropped off their most ecclecticly dressed passengers for a late afternoon of liquid lunching. Mars Crush (Pisco Porton, lemon, simple syrup, egg whites, maraschino), Purple People-eater (Pisco Porton, blackberries, creme de mure, lemon, mint), and Martian Twist (Pisco Porton, St Germain, lemon, grapefruit) Pisco Porton cocktails were oozing from the bar, not to mention an impressive array of craft beers from The Oaks Tavern's ever-rotating darught selection. Popcorn was popped, pizza was eaten, beer pong was played and shuffle board was shuffled. Probe the reviews right here, yelpthing!

Picnik collage3

Big thanks to the staff at both locations and since you're dying to see the costumes, all pics have landed on the Yelp Los Angeles Flickr page courtesy of yelp rock stars, Ken C (check out more of his snap happy pics of life here) and Brian S (feel free to send him loads of "write more" compliments)!

What better way to while away a sunny (and hot) Sacramento Sunday than with wine, acoustic melodies, massages and gourmet bites, all set among miles of picturesque vineyards on the delta? That's what Sacramento's elites were treated to on Sunday at Yelp's De-stressing on the Delta event at Scribner Bend Vineyards!
Picnik collageThe festivities began and ended with a classy party bus ride provided by Rockstar Limo Lounge. Close to 50 Elites and their +1's cruised to the party in red pleather style, jamming along to Madonna tunes and challenging each other to dance-offs on the stripper pole. Mind you, this was before the drinking even began...
Picnik collage2This group of lucky travelers joined another 150+ elites at the venue itself, set amongst acres and acres of lush grapevines next to this family vineyard's beautiful restored barn and fountain. They wasted no time sampling their delicious wines (a refreshing Pinot Grigio and Almond Sparkling Wine to name a few), all of which paired beautifully with blue cheese wrapped grapes, fresh apples, pears, nectarines, tomato and watermelon gazpacho, pineapple chicken skewers and shredded beef baguettes provided and created onsite by Whole Foods Market. And who can resist something sweet when giving your mind and body a treat? That role was filled by Vanilla Bean, who brought dozens of their famous vanilla and chocolate minis, along with a maple bacon cupcake that was most definitely a crowd-pleaser.
Picnik collage3In addition to an excellent spread of eats and drinks, local chanteuse Dinorah Curkendall serenaded the group with latin-flavored acoustic ease. If that wasn't relaxing enough, there were not one, not two but three massage therapists - Wellness Massage by DeAnna Cavnar, Precious Massage Therapy by Angella Darrington and Capitol Chiropractic - ready to use their magic fingers to work out unwanted back, neck and hand kinks. Those who wanted to stay a bit more active were treated to a tour of the Scribner vineyard, including an inside peek at their air-conditioned fermentation room. And about midway through the event, yours truly raffled off prizes from all of the generous sponsors, including two seperate gift certificates to private parties for up to 50 guests at Scribner Bend Vineyards and a basket of goumet goodies from Whole Foods! As Jeffrey M puts it: "This event was the perfect match for why I spend so much time on Yelp - because I discover new things."Picnik collage4 After three hours of drool-inducing satisfaction with some amazing elites, it was time to say goodbye to this stress-free oasis and return to our busy lives. Sac Elite Kevin T provides this summary: "After a week of non-stop exams and HOURS of endless studying I definitely needed some time to decompress and remind myself that life doesn't COMPLETELY suck. De-stressing on the Delta was just what the doctor ordered." Yelp South Bay's Endless Summer Nights @ Garden Court Hotel

Posted by Abby Schwarz

Summer is by far the most beautiful time of year in South Bay (DUH!), so why not celebrate with four awesome parties?!?!? From August 11 - September 8, the South Bay Community and beyond were treated to a series of events, otherwise known as Yelp's Endless Summer Nights at the lovely Garden Court Hotel, located in Palo Alto.

Night 1: Country Club

Yelp Country Club Collage 1

In honor of the first of four parties the Summer Nights series, yelpers donned their summery Great Gatsby themed clothing with pride. Il Fornaio catered the event with elegant style. Guests were bowled over by the phenomenal spread: including a massive salmon sculpture lined with capers and cucumber slices, giant cocktail shrimp with a mix of cocktail sauces, stuffed foccaccio bread, roasted tomato slices with with marinated mozzarella hats, stuffed mushrooms, delicious panini bites, tender slices of beef served on focaccia with au jus on the side, little triangle cucumber and tuna sandwiches, brick oven pizza slices, sensational charcuterie and cheese, and last but not least, an exotic giant fruit tray arrangement on both floors with pineapple, watermelon, green melon, cantaloupe, and other fruits. And that was just the savory selection of bites. For dessert, yelpers were able to endulge in a decadent chocolate fountain surrounded by scrumptious dipping bites such as strawberries, marshmallows, rice-krispy treats, madeleines and more. Sprinkles was the sweet highlight for many with their beautifully moist specialty cupcakes including Red Velvet and Chocolate Cream.

The selection of food was evenly matched with a dazzling array of robust drinks and cocktails. Hendrick's Gin had a gin drink that packed quite a fun punch. St. Germain dazzled with their champagne cocktail. Crispin Cider was a crowd favorite with their to die-for Raspberry Pear. And Pisco Porton kept the night feisty with their powerful Pisco drinks. For the designated drivers of the night - there was Sokenbicha botanical tea.

DJ Tanoa had everybody moving throughout the night. His groovin' beats kept the party alive well into the evening, and yelpers even broke out their finest moves for a fun dance competition to win a pair of coveted Rock the Bells tickets. Not only were yelpers able to try their feet at dancing, but they were also able to try their hand at some watercolors. All of the art was hung in the windows on a clothesline - capturing the creative spirit of the beaming crowd.

In the spirit of all of the art happening upstairs at the hotel, Foundation for a College Education was hand with exceptional volunteers to inform attendees more about their ongoing pursuit to open Higher Eduation doors to low income students. Their staff collected an impressive amount of donations throughout the event.

Night 2: Fashionably Lei'd

Fashionably Lei'd Collage 1
Donning festive lei's, bright tropical flowers pinned neatly in hair, long flowing turquoise dresses, Hawaiian themed collar shirts and other island wear - yelpers arrived at the space with relaxed smiles.

The courtyard was bursting with Hawaiian spirit, blow-up palm trees, festive flowers, a magnificent Clear Memories ice sculpture and the lulling sound of - Island Breeze Entertainment - with their graceful hula dancers and beaming ukulele rockstars.

While taking it easy to the mellow island grooves, guests indulged in Li'll Puffs s'mores and homemade strawberry & passion fruit marshmallows. Yelpers also sampled Da Kin Cafe's "absolutely tasty and fresh" ahi tuna, as well as Il Fornaio's mind-blowing chocolate fondue, cheese and fruit spread. Upstairs guests delighted in Bibo's NY Pizza Hawaiian themed New York style slices and decadent chocolate dipped strawberries, bananas and oranges from Edible Arrangements.

There were two different Coruba rum drinks as well as Yelp sno cones. Meanwhile, others sipped happily on Pisco Porton pineapple punch. Primo Hawaiian Lager was also flowing, so yelpers got a real taste of the island in a pint glass. ZICO coconut water provided some handy extra chocolate and coconut hangover-free electrolytes.

Yepers got all polished up in Umbrella Salon's masterful and magic hair-ea before hitting up PHOTOSTUDIO29's photobooth area to take a "few photos in COCONUT bras and lei's," noticing that it was primarily the MEN who wore sporting the coconut bras!

All tips collected were combined with all of the at-the-door donations, given by Hawaiian adorned attendees - to Breast Cancer Connections. Breast Cancer Connections is a phenomenal non-profit that seeks to educate women about Breast Cancer and raises money to provide more accessibility to important cancer screenings exams for women.

Night 3: Magic 8 Ball

Magic 8 Ball Collage 1
The magic wand was waved and Voila! Belgian beer including Duvel on tap and a super-popular Leifmans Fruitesse beer that had hints of cherry, raspberry, elderberry and some other wacky Belgian berries flowing all night, along with sparkling St. Germain champagne cocktails and a selection from Cupcake wine and spirits that included their famous wine and their new flavored vodka, which was used in delectable coffee cocktails using Illy Issimo. Non-drinkers were treated to some gourmet fermented soda from Cascal.

The beverages were a perfect complement to the endless summer food options that were there that night as well: Butterscotch on the Go, Bebecakes Cupcakery, Willet's Mini Creations, and RawDaddy's Dessert Cones provided the sweet treats (along with a classic chocolate fountain provided by the Garden Court), while Old Port Lobster Shack, Morocco's Restaurant and La Morenita provided the hearty savory dishes including quesadillas and lobster rolls.

The perfect way to burn off all those snacks? Jumping around for a flip book photo booth by The Laugh Box, of course! Check out this fun video from the night, provided by The Laugh Box. Or perhaps cutting a rug on the dance floor to music courtesy of DJ Aaron E (p.s. This may have been the most successful dance party in Yelp South Bay history!) Those who weren't satisfied with their black and white attire enhanced their look with intricate face painting by Lisa, and the theme really came full circle thanks to personalized readings by Elite Wanugee of Golden Dragon Fortunes.

The most magical part of all, though, was the smiles on the faces of those representing the Palo Alto Humane Society, who took home about $2,000 in donations to help coordinate rescue efforts for animals in Palo Alto.

Magic 8 Ball Collage 2

Night 4: Jorts Jam

Jorts Jam Collage 1

From tiny seventies daisy dukes, to longer surfer style jorts, yelpers rocked their denim with style. There was even a jorts bedazzling station at the event.

Yelpers arrived to an impressive array of local food options.  There was The Counter (voted "Best Burgers in the Bay") serving up mini burgers (including veggie ones) and sweet potato fries. Rubio's Mexican food delighted with chicken tacos and a chips and salsa bar, Saag Sausages's grilled up juicy sausages all night (they even had delicious packaged ones for people to take home), while Garden Court had their famous chocolate dipping fountain flowing with smooth milk-chocolate. Milkshake Werks held down the sugar fort upstairs, with their nutella, mint chocolate chip, and bourbon sundaes with a cookie on top. Wowee!

To match the dizzying array of enticing food options painted throughout Garden Courts picturesque courtyard area and well decorated upstairs and downstairs' rooms were a bevy of bold beverages including Sailor Jerry's rum (they passed out some truly killer swag), Don Pilar tequlia shots and margaritas, as well as Hell of High Watermelon Beer from 21st Amendment. Firestone beer was happily dispensed by Yelp's own engineers (also sporting Jorts) out of the Yelp kegbot, while Sokenbicha Tea satiated all those looking for some non-alcoholic options.

And of course what better way to compliment some strong drinks than with Homefry's giant Jenga (there were excited Jenga yells throughout the night), Partybooths' photo booth (epic photos here, event key "yelpsummer"), and Smule's Glee Karaoke. To keep the party in full party form throughout the evening was Yelp's own Ruggy J (aka - Dusty Muffins) on the turn-tables (also sporting some kick-a$$ jorts).

Not only was the event an exceptional way to celebrate outstanding locals businesses, but it was also a wonderful way to increase awareness about the Palo Alto Art Center Foundation who had an informational booth in the lobby, where they collected donations throughout the evening.

Jorts Jam Collage 2

4 nights, 1,200 yelpers, 50 lbs of flowing chocolate, 3 photo booths, more than 10 types of beer and 15 types of alcohol, Lord knows how many calories consumed and, most importantly over $5,000 raised for Palo Alto charities. A special thank you to the Garden Court Hotel for hosting all four events (and some rowdy yelpers)! Read all the event reviews here AND check out all the photos on the Yelp Flickr page.

Until our next shindig, SYOY!

Yelp Cleveland's Parddy On The Paddy-O

Posted by Cara

Over 75 Elites came out last week to reconnect to their Paddy at Yelp's Parrdy On The Paddy-O, hosted by Claddagh Irish Pub. Or as Cami T so eloquently puts it: "Whiskey, music, warmth...Fáilte!"

Paddycollage1

What pairs perfectly with a chilly evening on a gorgeous patio? A fire, some heaters and some warm grub to fill you up! Claddagh spoiled us rotten with a huge buffet full of light bites, like salmon mousse, caprese kabobs and hot spinach dip. Then there was the interactive grill with choices of chicken satay, beef and veggie sliders that Simon I says were "anything but light to my taste buds!" And just when we thought that was all, out came a full buffet of desserts, including macaroons that Rachael N said were "so, so tasty."

Paddycollage2

With all the feasting going on, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Absolut Vodka and Magners Irish Cider were all thankfully there to wet our whistles. Claddagh kept us buzzed serving up complimentary bottles of Magners, a fruit-y punch with Absolut and Jameson with ginger ale. We were all feeling pretty warm, especially Roxanne O: "There was a chill, but the fire pit (and the Jameson) kept us all toasty."

Paddycollage3

Ackey+Z Photography captured us celebrating and the Craic Brothers serenaded us all night with their folky, Irish tunes. In fact, Jeff T said, "kudos" to the "cool band" who "made the night memorable."

Paddycollage4

We also had two "best dressed" winners of the night who left with baskets full of green knick-knacks, a grow-your-own shamrock kit, DVDs, a blanket and more. Plus, a Claddagh scarf, mug and Magners schwag. Claddagh also gave gift cards to each guest of the party!

Paddycollage5

Many thanks to Claddagh, GM Mark Kelly and staff who made this event amazing. Andrea Z puts it well: "The atmosphere from the Claddagh staff was so welcoming and great, very nicely done, and hats off for their outstanding hospitality!" Also, thanks to Jameson, Absolut and Magners, Ackey+Z Photography and the wonderful Craic Brothers!

See all the rest of the fabulous party pics here and don't forget to check out all the event reviews here (or write your own!)

Until next time, SYOY, yelpers!

Portland Yelpers pleY'd On! @ OMSI - Yelp's 8-Bit Adventure Open Party!

Posted by Don Bourassa

Mario’s princess may have been in another castle, but we know where the party was! On September 17, 2011, over 1,350 Portland Yelpers experienced the largest PDXYelp event to date at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry for pleY On! Yelp’s 8-Bit Adventure. With 20 partners on site, food, drink, and access to OMSI’s Game On 2.0 exhibit, it was a night of adults-only nerdy fun at P-town’s perennial playground!

Pley collage 1

Playing video games makes for hungry Yelpers. From pulled pork to foie gras to lamb sandwiches to salted ice cream with caramel, Portlanders enjoyed tasty bites by incredible local food sponsors including Thirst Wine Bar & Bistro, A Cena, Irving Street Kitchen, Aquariva, Davis Street Tavern, H50 Bistro, NEPO 42, Bunk Bar, Uptown Billiards, Salt & Straw, KIND Snacks and PopChips! These partners stepped up and served a ravenous crowd with loads of high-end food.

While sampling scrumptious savories, party-goers powered-up with tastes from local wineries Z’ivo, Terra Vina, Utopia Vineyards and Enso Winery. Those in the mood for sudsy libations had as much as they could drink from Widmer Brothers Brewing with their Falconer’s IPA and OKTO Octoberfest beers. And of course it wouldn’t be a Yelp event without some fantastic cocktails made with Pucker flavored vodkas, Sauza Blue 100% Agave Tequila and Jim Beam Devil’s Cut 90-Proof Bourbon. While the Pac-Man bar with its fruity punches (including editor’s favorite Donkey Kong Punch) was a sure hit, the bourbon and tequila bar offered hand-shaken cocktails for the discerning palate. All of these luscious libations were expertly blended by the pros from Oregon Bartender’s Guild – the dapper folks in their daring green Portland Cocktail Week t-shirts. Oh, and parched lips were never so quenched as they were here by Dry Soda, Hot Lips Soda and Honest Tea

Pley collage2

But it wasn’t just all about the food. Oh no. Yelpers enjoyed access to many OMSI exhibits including Narnia, Life Sciences, Turbine Hall and of course the showcase exhibit – Game On 2.0 (which took Kris J “back to a simpler time when real men were plumbers and eating green magic mushrooms added to your life.”) DJ’s Saltfeend and Atom13 kept those trunks moving on the dance floor with their stylings on the wheels of steel. Meanwhile, those stuck in line were treated to some strummin’ tunes by Andy Kuss from Kinder Bison. And yelpers decked out in their video game best (like Warrio, Mario, Star-fox, Zelda, Asteroids, Tetris, King Hippo and Dr. Mario, to name a few) got their photos snapped at the Captured! Photography booth, the PopChips booth, and by roving paprazzi, Izzy! Those best dressed in the crowd also won amazing prizes from Salty’s On The Columbia, NEPO 42, Thirst Wine Bar and Ex-Libris Anonymous. It definitely pays to show off your costume prowess at Yelp events!

Pley collage3

Many like Melvin T have consider this “the best Yelp Event ever put together,” and it definitely would not have been so without the help of many people including Melony, Mark and the incredible staff at OMSI; Dave, Jabriel and the studs (and studettes) from the OBG; Mindy and Widmer Brothers; Greg, Rick and Cody from Beam Global Spirits; our incredible wine and food partners; Ed and Adam (DJ’s extrordinaire); The hard work of Matt D and his minions, Crystal H, Danny W, Katy H and everyone that helped out; and of course the Portland Yelp Community, without whom none of this would have been possible.

This truly was an event for the ages, and you really don’t have to take my word for it. Check out the reviews and photos!

Until next time, see you on Level 1-2.

Yelp Tucson Had An App For That @ Fox Tucson Theatre

Posted by Corey Dane

After a week of eating specially priced exclusive appetizers and voting for contending kitchens during Yelp Has An App For That: The Ultimate Food Fight, it just seemed fitting to gather a few hundred vintage-clad yelpers downtown at the historic Fox Tucson Theatre for Yelp Has An App For That: The Wrappetizer Party. This, the first Open Party in the OP, was a celebration of the city's finest fare, in addition to serving as a platform to announce T-Town's champ of the chomp!

IMG_1949

Kamryn C claimed the food from the 18 participating eateries was epic! She sunk her teeth into the quinoa patties from Contigo, goat cheese tart from Jax, Downtown Kitchen + Cocktails popcorn surprise (handed to her by Chef Janos Wilder himself), caprese and beets from Tavolino and a spinach artichoke crostini from Renee's Organic Oven. Danny S savored oxtail croquettes from Maynards, pork belly BLTs on corn pancakes from Pasco and smoky braised beef tongue sandwiches from the Cup Cafe. Ana T touts terrific things for Rio Café and the tuna bites from Delectables, while Molly H favored duck confit fried rice from Neo. Apps from Om, 47 Scott, The Abbey, J Bar, Lodge on the Desert and La Cocina rounded out the menu of intense eating which led Cheryl M to wonder, "Was that just a dream, or was I just in appetizer heaven?"

        IMG_1947      IMG_1977

      IMG_1986       IMG_1994

How do you wash down delectable bites from 18 eateries? Five New Belgium brews certainly helped quench people's thirst! For wine lovers, Lulu B "paired well with friends," and made sure party-goers were having a grape time with pourings of Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio. Those that didn't aim for alcohol were happily satisfied with Vita Coco and Vitamin Water. And our yelpiest of yelpers, Tucson's Elite Squad, had a private reception where they were given tastes of exclusive wine from Yvonne Foucher at CataVinos. Cheers!

         IMG_1895     IMG_1884

  IMG_1934  IMG_1832  IMG_1857

What's a party without a little entertainment? Genevieve and the LPs certainly set the soundtrack for the night! They were jammin' away with their irresistible blend of jazz, blues, soul, R&B and funk upstairs in the Clubhouse, while downstairs in the Locker Room the experts at Elements In Balance offered short stress-relieving rituals to help get peeps prepped pre-fight.

IMG_2081 IMG_2042 IMG_2043

After mixing and mingling at the winner's circle soiree, folks filed into the theatre for the main event! Big Tony & The House Boys took the stage to offer up fist-pumping tunes and Jennie and Chris of 92.9 The Mountain raffled off oodles of amazing prizes before announcing the winner of Yelp Has An App For That 2011, Steve and Renee Kreager of Renee's Organic Oven! On the way out of the theatre guests were greeted with yelpgasmic mini red velvet cupcakes from the famous Lucy Cioe and Pretty Sweet Desserts

IMG_2094 IMG_2302 IMG_2176   IMG_2229 IMG_2334 IMG_2340

Thanks go out to Executive Director, Craig Sumberg at Fox Tucson Theatre, Kara Chesser and the entire Fox staff, in addition to Carrie & Ken Flower of Arizona Party Rental for tables & linens, Pop-Cycle and DDCO Design for creating amazing commemorative coasters for our chefs and all of the sponsors that donated their time and product to make this event so successful. Yelp Tucson raised over $1000 for the Fox Theatre Foundation, and thanks to Chris Richards Photography and Billy Kovacs we can relive the entire evening through photos. John Sears Media and Stepheny Kieth of Black Sheep Filmworks are editing together some video, stay tuned to our Facebook page for those links. Until then, read the reviews, peek inside the photobooth and check out shots from the main event!

St. Louis Elites Bust a Move @ Yelp's High School Reunion

Posted by Aimee

What stereotype did you fit into in high school... jock? Nerd? Prep? Goth? Whatever it may have been, chances are there was a Yelp St. Louis Elite that looked just like you last week at The Fountain on Locust. We got together for Yelp's High School Reunion and I think it's safe to say we got plenty of laughs out of the costumes... especially Christine F when she came through the doors as a pregnant prom queen.

First2
First
First4 First5

Tons of delicious eats were on hand including a house-made hummus, goat cheese bruschetta, grilled chicken & pesto focaccia, vegetable focaccia, and house-made chocolate. The star of the show, though, was the Raspberry Lemon Drop -- an incredible ice cream martini, which is what the Fountain on Locust is known for here in St. Louis. This drink featured vodka, lemon sherbet, and fresh crushed raspberries.

Foodtop

Food1 Food2
Food3 Food4

Too add a little bit of hilarious trivia to the night, Elites sent me photos of themselves from high school prior to the event, and the spread of shots was more than entertaining and sparked some great conversations. Each guest got a numbered sheet along with a name bank, and they had to match the person's name to their picture -- most got them right, but some were a little tricky! After playing the high school photo matching game, Elites signed the giant Yelp High School yearbook. Remember sayings like "LYLAS" (love you like a sister), and "HAKAS" (have a kick ass summer?) All the classic yearbook signatures made it in, and we gave the finished product to The Fountain as a token of our appreciation for them hosting the event.

Shots

Sure the food was great, the drinks even better, and the high school photos enough to keep us laughing for days... but what was the best part? The dancing. We danced around to a 90's pop playlist all night, but when classics like the Electric Slide & the Macarena came on, Elites couldn't help but bust a move.

Dancing
  Cword3 Crowd1
Crowd3 Crowd4 Crowd5

Thanks to all my Elites & their constant enthusiasm... and for their reckless abandon on the dance floor. Also big thanks to DS Production Studio for capturing everything on camera, and of course to The Fountain on Locust for hosting & providing such a wonderful space with great food and drinks. For the full spread of photos, check out Yelp's Flickr page, and make sure to read the reviews re-capping the evening on the event page.

Rockin' the running gear & sweatband and still singing the Spice Girls greatest hits,

Pimp Your Profile Pic at Lomography

Posted by Vivek S

Last Thursday night, Toronto’s Yelp Elite Squad took a break from all things digital and took an analogue jaunt to the very hip Lomography Gallery on Queen street west. It’s the middle of the Diana World Tour, so yelpers got to take in the beautiful space and enjoy creative examples of cameras made into art. Brian K mused, “it was nice to party at something other than a restaurant/bar. Lots of things to look at, enough space to float around and chat with friends. With the DJ going there was definitely a different vibe going than the usual elite event.”

Blogpost1

The party got started with a small group of elites who got a hands on demonstration of the cameras and embarked on a photocrawl of the neighbourhood. Karen S dug it: “The photo crawl was great fun.  I never knew that graffiti alley was so close by. The lesson was very helpful. The staff super unpretentious and knowledgeable.” A new angle to explore the city!

Blogpost2

After the crawl, the space filled up with yelpers! For the snackish, Laura C was thrilled that “the food table was never empty and always full of my favourite: Pop Chips.” And of course, a bevy of beverages were at the ready with cocktails featuring Canadian Club, Russian Standard, Maker’s Mark and Skinny Girl margaritas. Danielle F’s drinks were poured gingerly: “A lovely fellow-redheaded bartender was so nice and willing to make my drinks with a heavier hand.” Now, that will definitely blur your focus.

Blogpost3

And of course yelpers rocked the Lomo photobooth!

Blogpost4

Many thanks to the staff of Lomography for hosting us in such an eye-popping space, and who were kind enough donate all tips to Project Sunshine. To learn more about the store and Lomography’s cameras please visit their website. Thanks again to our sponsors and to Cherry Cola who kept the party going at the event afterparty. A special thank you goes out to DJ extraordinaire Fabio N who also hosts a killer podcast called BitBang. Scope it out!

And make sure to check out the ever photogenic elites and stellar reviews on the event page!

Until next time, shutterbugs.

Last thursday night over 100 Parisian yelpers came out to celebrate the rentrée intelligently, at the very clever Smart Store. With Yelp behind the reigns, that translates into lots of drink, lots of food and lots of conversation. The secret concept store tucked away in a courtyard in the residential 9th “with its clean lines and ceiling lamps that looked like they walked off a Stanley Kubrick set” blew guests, like Fred L, away.

Smartgood1
In between discovering the latest high tech gadget, organic facial cream and porcelain water cooler, the elite squad was served a smorgasboard of perfectly packaged liquids and nibbles. On the menu: individual bobuns from the Vietnamese restaurant Bo Bun, cool salad compositions from Nova Verde, fabulous wines from Clarandelle served in Reidel glasses, green tomato, grape and apple juices from Alain Milliat, high-design soft drinks from Borderline and adorable and devlish desserts from . “Sumptuous bobuns, excellent wine and sinful desserts all went into the success of this latest elite event,” raved Camille D.

Smart1
Between mouthfuls, guests found the time to marvel over the shop and all of the avant-garde objects on display. “Meeting new people, discovering new places and convering my non-yelping guest into a new recruit,” convinced Fanny B to never, ever, miss another Yelp elite event!

Yelp´s Home Party @ Apartment Rentals Vienna

Posted by Andreas R

------------------

Who doesn´t enjoy remembering the cool home partys from back in college? A couple of beers and all your friends at your place, those were the simple ingredients for a great night. Inspired by these memories we decided to throw our own home party - pimped by Yelp of course!

Therefore, Yelp´s Home Party did not take place in a messy college dorm, but in a spacious rooftop apartment owned by the Apartment Rentals Vienna. Instead of canned beer and potato chips, Yelpers got a welcome glas of bubbles and after that, a fully equipped bar that had been carried all the way up the apartment. The barkeeper made sure that the Pina Coladas, Caipirinhas and the Planter´s Punch didn´t run out through the night.

Nobody had to go home hungry: plates with fingerfood carrying herbed chicken breast, roastbeef & mustard pickle, prosciutto & melon, salmon & mustard dill sauce, ham & sparagus, mozzarella, tomatoes & fresh basil as well as fried duck & apple were provided and constantly refilled by the busy helpers from the Apartment Rentals Vienna.

A special attraction was of course the apartment´s balcony, which was crowded with Yelpers throughout the whole evening. Petrus must have finally become an Elite Yelper as well because he made sure to provide us with great weather for the Elite Event.

A big thank you goes out to Gerhard, Anika and their team from the Apartment Rentals Vienna, who have been the perfect hosts for the night.

As usual, you can find the Yelper´s event reviews and more photos online.

Servus und bis bald!

Yelp Columbus Gets Masked & Mingles @ Latitude 41

Posted by Christina C.

Ya know, Mother Nature can be a real pain. A "fickle beech" according to Jason S. But that didn't stop Yelp Columbus Elites from enjoying themselves to the fullest at Latitude 41 / The Renaissance Columbus Hotel for Yelp's (Almost)Rooftop Masquerade!

Masquerade 1
"Latitude 41 earns mad props for letting us crash their restaurant since the rooftop thing wasn't happening," chimes Bryant M. "The space was beautiful and everyone working there was incredibly lovely." But what abut the food?

Chef Dave Maclennan prepared Smoked potato and leek soup, Chicken and Waffles, Devils on Horseback (bacon wrapped bleu cheese stuffed dates, romesco) and Cranberry Sticky Toffee Pudding, while Brother's Drake Mead and Tessora Limone offered tastes and Latitude mixed Watershed gin cocktails to pair. This was Jason S's first opportunity to try the Burgamot Blue – "a sweet, addicting blueberry mead." And "Tessora's unbelievably bold and bright Limone liqueur/digestif puckers the lips and opened the imagination to all the ways it can be served. Neat? In a mixed drink? Over or with a dessert? Endless possibilities for this sweet liqueur."

Masquerade 2 Columbus Photobooth Company captured all the fun behind the curtain. And from these photos, it appears much fun was had.

Special thanks goes to CATCO for providing tickets to "Evil Dead - the Musical" for best masks and Diamond Entertianment for playing music on the patio.

Arguably the highlight of the party were all of the amazing masks! Don't act like you weren't impressed!

Until the next one, SYOY, yelpers!

Yelp SF: Where Fair Weather Fans Need Not Apply

Sure, our San Francisco Giants are all but assured of missing the playoffs in 2011, hordes of true Giants fans came out in droves and proudly sported their finest orange and black threads, paying tribute to The Beard, The Freak, and the rest of our Jints at Brick Yard last night for the Let's Go Giants Rally Cap Pep Rally Yelp Elite Event. Brick Yard is a neighborhood sports bar and lounge in the Marina, which boasts rustic brick and redwood throughout and offers healthy organic California cuisine.

Yelpers clad in Giants garb were able to watch classic baseball movies while sampling Brick Yard's colorful array of organic bites. An-Nhien applauded the plentiful and amazing Shrimp and Corn ceviche seasoned with fresh guacamole and jalapeno as well as Brick Yard's Butter Lettuce Cups full of juicy chicken, crisp celery, raisins, cherries, grapes and yogurt. George A couldn't get enough of the ribs, marveling at their mind-blowing crispy outside. Julia D's dad was also smitten with them and described them as "buffalo wings, but ribs."

Not only was piquant food flowing throughout the evening, but the drinks packed a punch as well. Sailor Jerry and Hendrick's Gin represented with delicious cocktails such as "The Bomb" and "The Gigantes," all served in hip stainless steel Sailor Jerry take-away cocktail mugs.

At the end of the night, yelpers posed for fun photographs by Brick Yard's massive back wall Golden Gate bridge themed mural and three lucky costume winners walked away with a ridiculously huge tote-bag full of Sailor Jerry swag, including bottle openers, buttons, tote bags, and stylish (and coveted!) pirate tees.

Read about all of the fun here and stay tuned to the Yelp Blog for photos from PHOTOSTUDIO29.

Brooklyn Yelp Says Goodbye to Summer

Posted by peter d.

It's sad, but true: summer's ending, and with it, the season of backyard BBQs. But Brooklyn's finest yelpers came out to Two 8 Two last night, because there's no better way to say goodbye than with bourbon, beer, and burgers in a backyard.

Screen shot 2011-09-13 at 2.34.12 PM Screen shot 2011-09-13 at 2.42.36 PM  Screen shot 2011-09-13 at 2.40.13 PM

This brand new burger spot on Atlantic is making a name for itself as one of the best in the borough, and they certainly didn't disappoint last night. The kitchen was slangin' sumptous sweet potato fries, those of the regular variety as well as onion rings...but the burgers are what bring Brooklyn to their door. All different sorts were served, from their namesake burger with roasted poblano chiles and cheddar to their turkey burger that'll make you forget about beef to the Breakfast Burger that had Claire F amazed: "An egg riding bareback on a burger. This was life changing."

Everyone knows you can't nibble on a juicy burger without a little booze, and one of the best bourbons around, Buffalo Trace, was providing complimentary cocktails like the fresh Bourbon Limeade. For the yelpers interested in quality craft beer, Peak Organic offered up their crisp Nut Brown Ale, as well as the unique and hoppy Peak IPA. Both excellent when paired with food, they certainly put a smile on Joolz M's face.

Yelp Miami Knows How To Party At Salsa Fiesta!

Posted by Monica

Already a fan of the Biscayne Blvd Salsa Fiesta location, when Yelp Elites caught wind of the Yelp Elite Event going down at Salsa Fiesta's newest Pembroke Pines location, the RSVP lines filled up and the masses took notice. Armed with a freshly prepared spicy salsa bar, bomb burritos, toothsome quesadillas, nachos topped with 100% natural ingredients and other Mexican delights, Salsa Fiesta stunned the crowd with their show-stopping eats.

Salsa 2

Enlisted with the task of ordering whatever they wanted from the menu, Yelp Elites settled into a full meal of edible ecstacy. As Sergio S can attest, "There was something for the tech junkie (I liked their cool electronic check in system); There was something for the beer connoisseur (Negra Modelo in the house!); There was something for the dessert snob; There were great full meals; There was attentive service; There were awesome Yelpers!" This south of the border soiree was a bonafide great time had by all!

Interested in seeing what more folks have to say? Don't forget to check out the Yelp Elite Event reviews and peep the photos (thanks to Photobokeh) here!

Manchester Elites Get 'Frurty'

Welcome to a first for our city! Manchester's premier Frozen Yoghurt shop Frurt has only recently opened in the Oxford Road Corridor, and a lucky few Elites were able to sample all the delicious flavours these talented yoghurteers have on offer.

SAM_1625SAM_1629

Yelpers were welcomed with a 'healthy Bounty shake' upon arrival – a chocolatey-coconut concoction – and then treated to any fro-yo they wanted. Not only that, but even the spoons were edible! Yes, these were made of cookie and added extra deliciousness on top of an already tasty frozen treat.

SAM_1604 SAM_1627
SAM_1625 SAM_1637

Four flavours were made available that evening – their dairy-based natural and strawberry, and their vegan options, green tea and mango. The mango is their monthly offering, and it went down an absoute storm with our guests. As Mike R put it, 'It was delicious, strong but not overbearing and was also soya based... The strawberry was also great, very refreshing and made me wonder what a raspberry one would taste like – which would not be hard to do either considering they can make absolutely any flavour you can think of!'

SAM_1611 SAM_1607

Surely that's enough goodness, though? Wrong. Frurt harnessed their contact database and provided guests with amazing gluten-free gorgeousness from the Healthy Deli in the form of biscuits, brownies, lemon cake, flapjack... Amazing news for our dear Claire I.

SAM_1620 SAM_1602

But don't just take our word for it. Hop on the talk thread and chat, review the event here and have a peep at the pics on Flickr.

Ye Olde Yelp Picnic in Minneapolis

Posted by Annie D

The ladies and gents of the Twin Cities Elite Squad gathered to bid a fond farewell to summer at Ye Olde Yelp Picnic, an old-timey indoor picnic with an all-local lineup of gourmet Minnesota purveyors!

Collage2

Christina and Ben at Besade Studio put a roof over the group's coiffed heads in their restored 1890s warehouse studio. The exposed beams and brick of this award-winning event and photography space in North Minneapolis was a beautiful backdrop for the turn-of-the-century fashions roaming around at the party. Handlebar mustaches, bow-ties, white gloves, top hats, parasols and lace for days made this one of the most dapper gatherings we've seen yet.

Collage1

It was BYO-Blanket, so yelpers chilled together on the floor like real picnic-goers between tasting MN-made artisan treats. Yelpers noshed on the most sophisticated little savory and sweet PoshTarts—or "happy pockets," as Ben D now calls them. And Christopher N is craving more of the garden-fresh raspberry pepper jam from Lucille's Kitchen Garden, declaring, "I will be stopping by Kowalski's to pick up a jar in the morning!" Though... he may have stashed some in his 'stache for later too.

Mariel L picked up a few recipes for Seven Sundays' "simple and delicious muesli parfait and the perfectly chewy-inside/crispy-outside muesli cookies." She's already planning a trip to Midtown Farmers Market to say hi to Seven Sundays and her other new friends at Black Paws Bakery: " The most wondrous, fresh-baked breads paired with delectable gourmet butters. I will definitely hunt these guys down for the pesto bread. Pesto! In a bread! Genius! Pair it with the rosemary-thyme butter, and it's heaven."

Collage3

The brand new craft carbonators at Joia Soda served a few delicious cocktails made from their local soda, brewed in creative combos like lime, hibiscus and clove or grapefruit, chamomile and cardamom. Matt G noted, "The sodas explored flavors often considered too complex for that type of drink. Once again, Yelp helps me broaden my palate."

And what's a Yelp event without photos, eh? Snapz Photo Booth and their hilarious props inspired Cindy S in more than a few ways: "You can always expect to see me in the photo booth more than once. I got some awesome shots and now I have been considering going out and buying myself a turkey hat for the hell of it."

Collage4

A party is a party, but this one just had something special for Melissa L, who summed up this event's palpable local pride perfectly in her review: "I loved being able to sample the diversity of local goods and it really made me appreciate living in a city where others also value that." You can't see us, but our heads are nodding and hearts are smiling right now. Well-put.

Collage5

A special congratulations to Jessie S, who won a gorgeous picnic spread courtesy of Vicki from Grass Roots Gourmet at the Midtown Global Market... much to the chagrin of Ben D and quite a few other yelpers who had their eye on this most delicious prize full of Midwestern cheeses, apples and lots of other goodies. And a special thank you to everyone who was so generous in their charity donations to Big Brothers Big Sisters—we raised more than any other event so far!

Thanks again and again and again to all the generous sponsors who made this event possible, and to everyone who attended this bash! If you want to see more, take a look at the photos from the event by Alanna Olson and the reviews for the party. If you want to know more about joining the Elite fun, check it out!

Lots of Minnesota love,

Yelp Berlin mag's bubbly

Posted by Svenja

--------------------------------------------

This time we decided to get bubbly on our Elite Event. We took a culinary journey to Taiwan and tried bubble tea at Babbel T. The refreshing drink is currently conquering Berlin, so it was about time that we learned more about it. But Babbel T is not only about bubble tea, but the happy and colourful shop belongs to the UNSA cooking club. The lovely club members opened the doors of their club house for Yelp Berlin and the elites and told us all about the magic that takes place here.

To get into the bubble spirit we clinked glasses with some sparkling wine, which Omio (the molecular gastronomy genius) pimped with caviar-sized bubbles made from Aperol and blue Curacao - a recipe, which he invented especially for the Elite Event. We feel honoured!

In three stations we learned about bubble tea and where it comes from; the cooking club and its history and we were taught how to make lovely and healthy summer rolls; the third stop was dedicated to green crepes and the building process of the club house. It was not all about cooking and drinks but we also got some home improvement advice. To sum up the evening: we had bubble tea in all its variations, self-made summer rolls and the recipe to practice at home, green crepes and green cake plus a lot of fun!

A big fat Thank you to Kimmi, Omio, Hoang, Steffi, Tina, Nils and Diana aka UNSA cooking club and the Berlin Elites for a fabulous evening! If you attended this amazing evening and haven't reviewed it yet, you can do it here.

See you next time,

LA West Goes Wine Tasting in White

Posted by Brinny

What's the difference between a pinot noir and a cabernet? The LA West Elites can tell you as they spent Saturday afternoon sipping, sampling and savoring an assortment of wine and food from the newly opened Malibu and Vine.  The outdoor tasting spot is set amidst a dramatic mountain range and overlooking the Malibu golf course.

Picnik%20collage(7)

Locally grown Semler and Saddlerock wines such as sauvginon blanc, cabernet and pinot noir were served along side the Bar & Grille's many dishes which included famous crabcake sliders and more. Kislev A definitely didn't leave hungry: "Chef Matthew Zubrod, he with the extensive illustrious background, made the mundane sublime. That grilled cheese sandwich, the gazpacho, the melon/prosciutto salad, the liver pate on crostinis, the rib and mac and cheese (lipsmacking), the cheese platter, the steak bites, and the caprese salad (easily man-handled)." Yummy!

Picnik%20collage(9)

The Semler family was there in person to welcome us to their new digs and show off those local vinos. In between eating, Elites were able to test their palates with a blind tasting of 3 red wines. Winner's won seats to a private tasting dinner.

Picnik%20collage(12)

Live jazz kept things smooth and upbeat while Vita Coco debuted refreshing new flavors like pineapple and tangerine. Jennifer L has found a new favorite with Cookies N Cream who kept everyone's sweet tooth satisfied with red velvet, vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, over 6 different cookies and ice cream sandwiches. "Step aside Diddy Reese, it was the sweetest treat for Cookies N Cream to come out with a fabulous presentation of countless cookies and ice cream sandwiches made-to-order."

Picnik%20collage(10)

The Picture Healing guys and Lew Abramson had everyone "strike a pose" and captured each and every yelper, wine and food in site! View more photos here.

Picnik%20collage(11)

And no one left empty handed! In addition to getting Yelp sunglasses, fans and bottle openers, plus certificates to come back and have a free wine tasting, each and every attendee received a free ticket to Iris by Cirque Du Soleil.

Yelp Baltimore Kicks Mother Nature's Butt (in the most Zen-like of ways, of course)!

Posted by Elsa M.

First: an earthquake. Next: a hurricane. Now: a series of flash floods?! It's been a hard couple of weeks in Charm City, so Yelp Baltimore decided to serve up a little R&R in advance of the impending arrival of locusts (Just kidding! **Lawd, please don't send locusts!!**).

Yelpy-yogi Elites braved the wind and the rain for "Yelp's Got Soul" - a celebration of wellness inside and out. Located in Charles Village, The Living Well hosted our newly-enlightened Elites, providing yoga and Tai Chi instruction set to amazingly-beautiful and relaxing live music by Simon Wojcik and Jonathan Fell. Chaka C walked away on clouds. "The vibe was uber-positive and inclusive. I dig it!"

yelp-54      yelp-1       yelp-15

Elites took a "tea time" break in between the lessons thanks to refreshing beverages from Honest Tea ("After I heard the story about its start, it tastes even better," says Nina U). An after-workout buffet of delicious vegan soul food catered by The Land of Kush capped off the night and helped Yelp Baltimore Elites fully achieve the 'Zen within.'

yelp-7-2     yelp-49

"It was a rough week at work and an evening of Yoga and Tai Chi and hanging out with Bal-mer Yelpers was what I needed," sighs Jen L, who also loved The Land of Kush's soulful sides (All hail the kale!). She's "usually not too crazy about Vegan food, but it was pretty damn good. That carrot cake is better than most carrot cakes made with eggs and butter! YUM! Everything was good!"

yelp-41  yelp-63 yelp-43-2  yelp-34  yelp-47

Simply put: Katrina W raves it was "Yelpers Paradise! As a person who lives for new happenings, last night was a great community building event."  It might have been pouring outside, but it was impossible to rain on "Yelp's Got Soul"  - the most peaceful party around!

A special thanks to ImaxPix Photography for capturing all the pictures and to Ripple Effect Productions who captured all the moves via video (which you can see on the Yelp Baltimore YouTube Channel). Maneuvering around discretely in a setting like this one was no easy feat! :)

West End Passport Launch

Posted by Chris Docherty

What do you get whe you take a great big handful of excellent independent businesses in the West End, whck them into a wee book with, each with an amazing one off deal lasting from the 9th to the 16th of September and sprinkle a little Yelp magic... the answer? Yelp's Passport To The West End! That's what!

Passport1

Epic just about covers it.... We're making a check list. On it are the following. Kick ass people. Check. Amazing alcohol sponsors. Check. Scrumptous Grub. Aye. Splendid independant businesses. Yipper. Oh and a great wee venue to boot. All present and correct. Ok, let's launch this bad boy!

Passport2

70 plus guests arrived on the night of Thursday the 8th to pick up a passport, meet up with some of the biz owners, grab a drink, some grub and a gab whilst having their ears serenaded by some soulful, sweet music.

P3

Peeps

Climbing the stairs to the Lansdowne Church, members of the Yelp community mingled with regular Glasgow civillians (not popped that Yelp cherry yet) and helped themselves to a welcome beer from the uber punky Brewdog, with Scottish sales manager Jonny whipping out tasting of the epic Punk IPA, 5am Saint and 77 Lager. Many tasted, all loved!

Brew

If mutt was too much for some folk, the fine folks from The Finnieston brought along some of the amazing blended scots whisky and whipped up some truly stunning and game changing concoctions. Peely Wally (Whisky White Russian with peppermint bitters) anyone? Or are you more of a Sweet FA kinda guy (apple juice and peppermint bitters )? Whatever your poison (both?) it's safe to say that Colin from The Finnieston had you covered on the night!

Finnie

Whisky AND beer?! Geez, just as well we had some fantastic nibbles available on the night thanks to the lovely folks from Gambrino, who in the spirit of this great community evening, answered a last minute grub grab with a whack of pizzas that had the room swooning. Add to that, a cheese board spread fit to topple of the table from I.J Mellis, served up by manager James to the 'ooh' and 'ahh' of the gathering crowd. With main and starter covered, the fine folks from Flamingo Bakery flew to the flocks rescue with an outstanding array of cupcakery the likes of which has never been seen! (Find these guy and try 'The Elvis'... do it!).

Cake

Cheese

Pizza

With the belly filled and the dutch courage fuelled, t'was time to mingle and chat to some of the participating passport businesses, with the likes of Mind The Gap, Macs Glasgow, Damselfy And The Queen Bee, Alice Rocks and Miss Lottie Lou all in attendance, chatting and mingling with the newly 'passported' punters!

Biz

And hey, if that wasn't enough, the ears of those in attendance were treated to some suberd sounds from Glasgow band The Meatmen, who pounced upon the chruch piano and provied the crowd with some great tunes.

Men

Big thanks on the evening go again to Jamie K who put in a shift and a half to get the venue set up. Jessie D for help on the night and Kevin L for applying his 'Just do it!'attitude to the end of the night!

Ra photies? Awesome aint they! Once again our good friend Alasdair Watson snapped and papped his way through the event. Many thanks to him!

Go forth and Passport good people. Don't forget, if you didn't manage to pick one up at the event, then you can always download one here, use the Yelp app to access the offers in the 'Deals' section, or simply pop into any of the participating businesses and pick up a copy!

Once again folks, if you attended the event and want to share your views on how awesome it was, then jump over here to the event listing and let the rest of the community know you thoughts.

Got something else to chat about? Jump onto Talk and share the word.

Yelp Edinburgh's Americana Foodie Feast @ The New York Steam Packet!

Posted by Jenny Lovatt

It was all aboard the New York Steam Packet in Edinburgh last night as Captain Kev readied the grill, prepped the meat and fired up the fryer for an epic American food feast Yelp style! Over 30 hungry yelpers ducked off Rose Street to this "best kept secret" on Rose Street Lane and took the winding stair-case to the upper deck of the New York Steam Packet, squeezing in side-by-side to make merry with OneGlass Wine, Vitamin Water and lots and lots of finger-licking food!

NYSP1
Whilst Kevin began prepping the feast, the servers Barbie and Vino made sure everything was set whilst old and new yelpers gathered in the cosiest American diner this side of the pond. 'From the moment' Joe A 'turned off Rose Street and beelined for the secluded alleyway where the blink-and-you'll-miss-it New York Steam Packet resides ' he knew he was in for a good evening!NYSP2
One Glass wine was promptly opened and there wasn't an empty glass for the rest of the evening. Despite saying 'I'll be on the Vitamin Water tonight guys' it only took Emily V 15 minutes to have her first glass in hand. 'It's those OneGlass wines - they just look so great and beg to be consumed!' No one disagreed!

NYSP4 Americana costumes were compared, new yelpers were introduced, and the New York Steam Packet itself was admired. This wee diner has been keeping Edinburghers full of fine American food since the 70s, and much of the paraphernalia remains the same as the day it opened - including the giant wall-mount of the Statue of Liberty. Those in the know stop by for their amazing three course set meal, which these lucky yelpers were about to experience in epic proportions.

NYSP8
They weren't kept waiting long as platters of mussells in garlic and white wine, chicken liver paté, potato wedges with harlem dip and sweet potato soup got everyone in the mood for munch. 'Testament to the amazing taste of these mussels was Martin, a virgin to mussel eating, who we coaxed into trying at least one' explains dining companion Kerrin R. 'After his first NYSP mussel, he declared he had been missing out on the world of mussels. Win.'NYSP5 Here come the mains! The first to arrive was the one Kerrin R 'tried his best to keep the longest, because it was simply delicious – the "New York" beef burger.' Followed by sirloin steak strips, zigan chicken, salmon fillets with lemon and parsley butter, veggie enchiladas, and more fries than a McCain advert. Followed by even more steak in a sauce that made Emily V go 'oooooeeee was that amazing stuff'. She swears if she had a straw she 'would have been happy in the corner drinking that peppercorn and brandy sauce' and Jurgen D suggests 'if you go back, order it on the burger. OMG'. A definite champion of the night!

NYSP6
And the food just kept coming. 'The amount to come out of the kitchen over the course of the night was epic, three courses of tapas-style American food'. Three courses you say Emily V? Why that's right, because there was cake too - Dime Bar cheesecake, New York cheesecake, chocolate cake and pecan pie. It was so good fights almost broke out as the sharing platters passed back and forth - but everyone was still smiling!
NYSP9
The party continued well into the wee hours and Kay L agrees 'it is a tribute to the atmosphere of New York Steam Packet and all the wonderful Yelp people that the wine kept being topped up and the food kept coming.'  And the evening didn't end there as all 30 yelpers, Kev and the other NYSPers trooped to a local bar for a drink or three. 'All in all an awesome, great meal and a great start to a great night! Yelp Elite know how to Party. FACT!' Too right Jurgen D!

NYSP10
NYSP11

A huge thank you to Cap'n Kev and his New York Steam Packet crew for hosting such an epic feast. Catriona C wants to give 'extra kudos to the staff who worked the room with food and style, the night would have been less without you.' And thanks to OneGlass Wine for keeping Edinburgh yelpers topped up all night and Vitamin Water for the refreshments, and Robin Mair for being so snap-happy.

NYSP12

Read all the reviews of the night by many a-happy yelper, have a peek at all the photies to see both food and yelpers looking fabulous, talk about the night some more, and keep up with the New York Steam Packet on Facebook!

Until next time!

Yelp Miami Touches Down At Shula's 347 Grill!

Posted by Monica

On Tuesday night, 75 Yelp Miami Elites descended upon South Miami's premier corner spot, Shula's 347 Grill. Donned in their finest cocktail attire, guests prepared for an endless smattering of toothsome delights while being serenaded with sexy lounge tunes. DJ Chilly and electric violinist, JC, wowed the room with their collaborative performance.

Shula's1

The generous folks at Shula's 347 Grill offered Elites a bevy of complimentary beverages options including Belgian beers Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, and Leffe. For those seeking a taste from the vineyard, Ferrari-Carano Cabernet Sauvignon and Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc. Even those with a leaning toward distilled tipples savored a special cucumber infused martini with Hendricks Gin! As for the plentiful bites bestowed upon the group, Shula's treated guests to an array of their signature appetizers: Blackened Tenderloin Tips, BBQ Jumbo Shrimp, stuffed with basil, wrapped in applewood bacon and dipped in BBQ sauce; Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, served with remoulade and lemon; Truffle French Fries, tossed with truffle oil, parmesan and parsley; and Crispy Ravioli, lightly breaded cheese ravioli served with warm tomato coulis.

Yelpers Got Their Quiz Bowling on at Bowlmor OC

Posted by Hazel Q

Last night yelpers gathered in at Bowlmor Lanes Orange County in Tustin for Yelp OC's 4th Annual Quiz Bowl. (Quiz Bowl! Get it? GET IT?!) Ah yes, puns were in abundance at this event full of trivia nerds. But before one can remember what Mickey Mouse's orginal name* was, they must be well fed.

The absolutely amazing staff at Bowlmor made sure these yelpers got to sample almost everything on the menu from tater tots with bacon ketchup to kung pao calamari. And of course, what would a Yelp event be without a few Cruzan mojitos to wash it all down? To work off those hard-earned calories, everyone laced up their bowling shoes and hit the lanes for some fantastic bowling action.

After exercising the bod, it was time to work out the mind with the official Quiz Bowl for 2011. These Jeopardy wannabes tested their knowledge about Disney, US Presidents and even John Hughes. It was a strong showing by all, but Yelptorious Basterds proved a worthy adversary by coming in first place.

Thanks to all who came out for one amazing night and a huge thanks to everyone at Bowlmor. Read more about it from the reviews on Yelp and check out the photos from the ever-so-talented Albert E on Yelp's Flickr.

Until next time... SYOY!
