Yelp's Matriphony: A Reception Deception!

Posted by Rachel Fell

Man oh man, Milwaukee. I sure do love your style.

Canadian tuxedos and bridesamaid dresses with combat boots? Don't mind if we do. MKE's fake wedding themed elite event — Yelp's Matriphony: A Reception Deception — was killer fun this past Friday night at Great Lakes Distillery.

Where to begin?

Let's start with the craft punch GLD made for the event: Kinnickinnic Whiskey, lemon, ginger, sugar, bitters and local ginger ale? Yes please. What's more? Rehorst Gin, grapefruit juice, port, creme de violette, honey, lemon, rosemary. Also, tastings, to boot! Rouge absinthe, Roaring Dan's molasses infused rum, and more. Holy win!

Not to be missed were the Anaba Tea Room bites, either! They were on hand with their super fantastic Cardamom bars, wasabi shrimp salad, and inpsired steak sandwiches... all of which were more than delicious. Who knew Anaba was doing such great stuff in a basement in Shorewood? (Hint: now Yelpers do!)

Cake smashing? Messy, but oh-so-delightful.

Annnd... the dance off. While the photos explain most everything, winners got to choose from any of the bottls GLD offers as a prize! Needless to say, the final three really seemed to get in there and go for it. You gotta want it!

Bouquet toss! Yelpers got to vie for the (fake) red and white flowers... and our winner received Lakefront Brewery tour passes, Nessun Dorma and Highland House gift certificates, and more!

Renowned Rishi Tea provided favors for the event... their summer iced teas were not only a great touch, but in flavors such as Summer Lemon, Citron Green, Mango and Rapsberry, they sure were a  hit! All that, AND disposable cameras. (Pics to come... watch out!)

So much dancing, laughing, drinking, eating, and fun! A special thanks to Matt Baran and Alex Wickstrom for taking great pictures and spinning awesome jams. So great to see our Yelp community here in Milwaukee grow... I'm looking forward to all the good things to come!

And until then, as always, SYOY!

Late *Late* Afternoon Tea in Manchester...

They say Thursday's the new Friday, and last week was no exception when Manchester's Yelp Elite descended upon vintage tea room Sugar Junction in the Northern Quarter for an evening of canapés, cakes and some very delicious drinks served in their finest china.

IMG_8441 IMG_8443
IMG_8415 IMG_8404

Sugar Junction's well-sourced teacups became the vessels for 'G and Tea' (a cocktail as named by one Miss Lizzie G of Yelp London) made with Brockmans ten botanical-infused gin, as well as Prosecco and local beers from independent off-license Carringtons of Chorlton. Yelpers munched on finger sandwiches, miniature quiches and savoury tarts, lemon drizzle cake, strawberry cream pies and macaroons from the English Rose Bakery on nearby Oldham Street, and swayed along to the soothing sounds of the tearoom's retro soundtrack while Harrison Edwards took quality snaps.

_MG_8550

Before long, Sugar Junction's already ample tearoom was packed out with more than 50 yelpers all keen to get a teacup cocktail and a picnic plate... so much so that they opened up their recently refurbed downstairs area just for the excess, and revellers were spilling out onto the Tib Street pavements to enjoy a seasonally balmy evening.

Alexandra P loved the fact that ''the atmosphere is cosy yet bright and airy; the decor classic-cum-contemporary tearoom, complete with full china teasets sourced from vintage stockists, lovely twee wallpaper, sleek wooden floors and ornate chandeliers.'

'Mrs Z has now become addicted to caramelized onion, pepper and goat cheese tartlets,' Lee Z said of his very happy plus one, 'and I now realise I cannot live without macaroons. Thank you Emma, and thank you people of Sugar Junction!'

_MG_8559 IMG_8419

'Congratulations Sugar Junction,' Chris M, who switched Elite constituencies from Edinburgh to Manchester for the night, announced... 'you've just made my Grandma cry; you have officially won the award for The Best Lemon Drizzle Cake I have ever eaten - and that's saying something considering... a) I have literally eaten a whole shedload of LDC in my time (you can check my back garden, I still have the shed), and b) one of the other contenders for the trophy was in the room at the time! (sorry Ruth H!)'

_MG_8562

And last but not least, we were lucky enough to have sister city Leeds' Community Manager Rowena H on hand to help out – our favourite magpie couldn't resist the tearoom's vintage finery!

Yelp Honolulu Shows Off Its Moves At Kissaten Coffee Bar

Posted by Emi H

We all know Honolulu Yelp Elites are good looking but they managed to prove without a doubt that Yelp's Got Game at Kissaten Coffee Bar. 100 Honolulu yelpers came out to the brightly decorated 24/7 cafe for an evening of trivia, noshing and Yelp themed shenanigans!

Yelp_kissaten-165 Yelp_kissaten-122

Upon arrival party yeeps were presented with their Yelp Elite watches that reminded them on the top of the hour that it was "Time To Yelp." Everyone participated in an easy ice breaker that paired them up with other guests and the prize for gettin' to know you? A sweeet deck of Yelp playing cards!

Board games are never a bore when you're throwing back coffee shots, lemonade cocktails and a bevy of beers. Yelpers enjoyed ice cold bottles of Bud Light, Heineken and Miller Lite which helped them to keep their cool during a heated game of Candyland.

Rarely without something to say online, yelpers were left speechless by plates full of Kissaten's incredible eats. They stuffed their bellies with tomato bisque, grilled cheese sandwiches, caprese skewers, mac n' cheese and yummy butter mochi. Now that's enough food to sink your Battleship!

The competition got heated during a game of Twister where Kaiulani K showed off her "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Yelper" pose and walked away with a prize of Fact Or Crap trivia. But the ultimate win went to Yelp Elite Scott K who mastered his way as champion of the giant Yelp Jenga showdown! As king of the wooden Yelp blocks he won a complimentary stay at the gorgeous Paradise Bay Resort.

Yelp Dallas' Cocktail & Dreams

Dallas Elites showed off their mixology skills at the Cocktail & Dreams Elite Event at the strikingly elegant Studios 1019. Dolce Touch Vodka provided some tasty vodka to perfectly compliment 6 featured recipes for the Elites and their fabulous guests to enjoy.

MeganSdrink Studios1019 Grr

Elites had fun playing 'Tom Cruise' as they submitted their fave cocktial vodka recipes to vie for the top three recipes revealed at the party. As the recipes came flowing in the competition became more and more - well just like the cocktails - stiff. No doubt, every recipe submitted was Elite Event worthy, but we finally came down to three that blew the guests away. Congrats to Megan S, Allison L, and Luke H for creating some clever concoctions!

TomC  Cuties3

Over 120 Yelp guests enjoyed infused cocktails boasting ingredients like meddled mint, basil, and pineapple to blueberry, fresh peeled ginger, and cherry juice. As these lively libations quenched our thirst, LA Burger satisfied our appetites. From their to-die-for Korean tacos to yummy hoagies the line was filled with excited chatter over these highly-anticipated bites!

LABurger4 LABurger

To keep the 'Cocktail' theme what better attribute than a big, fat Stogie? Sabino – The Cigar Roller was there rolling up some tight Cuban-style cigars and educating our attentive guests the craft of cigar rolling. Honest Tea was there reppin' in style with refreshing iced tea flavors.

LABurger2jpg Cigar

Thanks to FANBooth – the fun didn't stop. Yelpers unleashed their wild side inside the curtained off 10x10 booth. You know what they say, "What happens in the FANBooth stays in the FANBooth." Check out the wacky times here. In the meantime, here is a little sneak peek...

Columbus Elites Celebrate Summer in the 614!

Posted by Christina C.

Summer officially hit the 614 and Columbus yelpers welcomed the season with a backyard bash at the original City Barbeque.

Bbq 1
Complete with a spread of smoked and grilled favorites like sausage, pulled pork and chicken, sweet vinegar slaw and potato salad, it's a wonder how anyone had room for Graeter's Ice Cream who generously dished out popular flavors like peach and raspberry! Especially those who participated in the first-ever Yelp Rib Eating Contest.

Ribs

Winner, Seth D took home a City Barbeque giftcard after beating his competitors at eating the most ribs in three minutes, one-handed! Fellow contestant, Tory R, "thought he was in heaven when they brought out a pan of like eight slabs!" After his defeat, "he was shocked… yet impressed!"… "I probably downed a good 3,000 calories that night! But oh well, well worth it!"

Of course this patio picnic wouldn't have been the same without cold drinks to beat the heat. Our thanks to Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey, Crispin Hard Cider and Honest Tea for keeping us hydrated. Brandie W "could hardly wrap her mind around the free samples" of Jack and even though Amity H is preggers, the "frosty cider looked so delicious it made her wish drinking while pregnant wouldn't make her baby need a helmet." And Honest Tea "convert" Seth D's "so glad that they was there because he really liked the drinks, even though his previous experience with their products was negative."

Drinks

Strumming classic blues and rock for the masses, Jim Lynch and Charlie Bleak were Matt R's favorite part of the evening! "The music was great," chimes Liz M.

What could make this summertime party any better? Straw bales, S'mores "around a citified camp fire," reports Amity H, and Cornhole! "I devoured a fantastic and horribly messy S'more," admits Michelle K. "I had so much fun at this Elite event!" confesses Stephanie K. "It was absolutely perfect for a summer day."

Bbq 2
Be sure to check out all of the feedback of those that attended, and write your own review if you were there too! Did you get your photo taken by the charming and talented, Melissa Pena? Take a peek at the pics on Flickr!

Happy Summer!

AtLAntic City: Yelp's Boardwalk Empire

While speakeasies ran rampant in Atlantic City during Prohibition in the 1920s, there's no way a ban on alcohol and nightclubs could hold the LA Yelp Community down! Downtown LA's former stock exchange building and tri-level architectural gem, Exchange LA, was transformed into AtLAntic City: Yelp's Boardwalk Empire, a wild saloon filled with frisky females, gents in flashy suits, gambling, jiving, bootlegging, swell libations, and a fine selection of savories and sweets. Guests got all Boardwalk Empired out and had the rest of DTLA thinking they were in a time warp. Pearls, sequins, fedoras, feathers, and suspenders were seen around every dark corner!

Boardwalk 1

Kitchen12000 took the night to the next level by decking out the place and having a swarm of swanky guys and gals classying up the joint. They also manned a sausage station, pasta and meatball outlet, and olive and cheese buffet. Meanwhile, the bar was fully stocked with Dolce Touch Vodka, Karma Tequila, and Dirty Sue Premium Olive Juice. Drinks included The Mistress (Dolce Touch Vodka with pineapple juice and Chambord), The Bruiser (Original Moonshine served on the rocks with a fresh lime), The Light 'n Dirty (Dolce Touch Vodka and Dirty Sue Premium Olive Juice shaken over ice and served with an olive), and The Exchange Express (Karma Tequila with triple sec, sweet and sour, and orange juice). Those with secret agent skills sneaked their way up to the mezzanine level for the Widmer Bros bar, where a hot to trot Betty served up draft Drifter Pale Ale and Hef.

Boardwalk 6

The main room was in full swing with endless amounts of entertainment. Newestra's DJs, Dances with Wolves kept the room booming with a fantastic mashup of '20s and modern day hits, which paired nicely with the black and white stills of a simpler time. It was truly the bee's knees. The saucy sirens of The Lalas Burlesque dazzled guests with two gorgeous numbers that had eyes popping out of heads and jaws dropping to the floor. Let It Ride Events turned the mezzanine level into a bonafide gambling pit, where people traded in their tickets for clams (ok, poker chips) and bounced from craps to black jack to poker to roulette. Congrats to Love C and Anthony N for being the biggest gambling addicts, er, winners who each took home a pair of tickets to SHREK THE MUSICAL and a gift certificate to Lexington Social House for being the top two earners of the evening.

Boardwalk 5

Downstairs was home to the High Roller's Sweet that contained the most impressive display of desserts yet! Shortnin Bread charmed the crowd with themed treats including a mustache cookie on a stick that doubled as a photo prop and unique rice crispie squares. Pacific Cheesecake Company hasn't even celebrated their Grand Opening yet but after their buffet of mini cheesecakes, they'll surely be a sweet tooth favorite in no time. My Delight Cupcakery turned out their infamous Breakfast Cake (buttermilk cupcake loaded with applewood smoked bacon, topped with a maple syrup frosting and covered with bacon bits) and Vanilla Almond Salted Caramel cupcakes. Farmers' Market fave, Crème Caramel LA, served up decadent bread pudding and their signature and sinful creme caramel. Porch Pies sliced up whole blueberry and buttermilk pies that were as delicious as they were cute! The Fry Girl made a repeat appearance with their adorable donut machine and staff, pumping out the small fried numbers to nibble on (or swallow whole)!

Boardwalk 4

Cooling guests off in the sweets room was Don Francisco's Coffee with an iced vanilla coffee concoction that paired perfectly with the sugary delights. And of course who could forget The Original Moonshine whiskey bar shaking up crafted specialty cocktails like The Spicy Shine (with a real jalapeno) and The Shiner - they tended bar like nobody's business. Vocal stylings added harmonious melody to the room courtesy of 1920s jazz singer, Richard Halpern, "Mr Tin Pan Alley!" Project Photobooth created an entire lounge that had attendees posing for mug shots left and right. The pics are definitely the cat's pajamas!

Boardwalk 3

A suggested $5 dollar donation benefitted California Farm to School, a local nonprofit organization that connects schools and local farms with the objectives of serving healthy meals in school cafeterias, improving student nutrition, providing health and nutrition education opportunities that will last a lifetime, and supporting California's farmers.

Boardwalk 2

And let's not forget the businesses that helped make our two @YelpLA Twitter contest winners Eduardo G and Liz M feel like VIPs: Crown Limousine, Jamaica's Cakes, Epione Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica Place.

Pretty sure Nucky would be proud of the scandalously sinful evening, but you can read the reviews and peep the pics here to see for yourself (courtesy of Santiago Valencia Photography and our very own Albert E)!

Thankfully Prohibition is over and drinking (and yelping) is legal!

Yelp Vegas Rocks Around Red Rock!

Posted by Misti Yang

There's walk arounds and dine arounds, but the only word that preceded 'around' this Wednesday was 'rock', as in the Yelp Elite Rock Around at Red Rock Casino Resort. And, the name was fitting because the evening definitely rocked with Yelp Elites visiting three of Red Rock's fine dining establishments for savory bites and adult libations and ending the evening with a feast of sweets and Cosmic Bowling at Red Rock Lanes. The gathering of 120 Elites were divvied into packs of 40 and spent two hours rotating through the upscale private dining rooms of each delicious venue. Each spot had a unique taste to offer. Suki L sums it up nicely: "It was absolutely extraordinary."

RRCollage1

At T-Bones Chophouse the menu showcased the prime steakhouse's decadent light bites: pancetta mac & cheese poppers, heirloom tomato salad, Wagyu burger sliders, and ahi tuna nachos. While nibbling away, Elites enjoyed a swanky view of the pool and washed everything down with a sweet tea inspired Peach Palmer and some refreshing Rock Collins, two of their signature cocktails.

RRCollage2

Next stop, Hachi, where it was time to sample modern Japanese, specifically succulent sushi! Everyone feasted on their legendary LSD roll and vegetable tempura rolls while sipping Velvet Revolvers (secret ingredient: sriracha) and Asian Pears.

RRCollage3

The trip around-the-world was completed with a visit to Cabo! Upon arrival, Elites went to work on spicy salsas and guacamole galore, and while lounging and enjoying the view of the fountain, servers dished out a sampling from the delectable happy hour menu along with margaritas and strawberry mojitos.

RRcollage4

Sure, that could have been enough, but local heart-throb Red Rock Casino luvs locals, so they didn't stop there! No, for the grand finale, they whisked all 120 yelpers off to Red Rock Lanes for dessert and cosmic bowling. Upon arriving, yelpers received their Yelp Elite watches, so they could confirm they had been rocking around the clock, and two tickets for Friday night's Gavin DeGraw concert, part of the Red Rock summer concert series. After inhaling cheesecake pops and cupcakes, Elites rode a sugar high into a night of out of this world strikes and spares!

Cleveland Elites Celebrate Eating Local At Ol' McYelpy Had A Farm!

Posted by Cara

It's summertime… the season we Clevelanders take seriously (since it doesn't last long) with lots of sunglasses, al fresco dinning, and outdoor activities. And if you were one of the lucky 50 that made it out to Ol' McYelpy Had A Farm, you know summer’s arrival is something to squeal about!

McYelpycollage1

Washington Place Bistro & Inn was the perfect spot to ring in our favorite season and the longest day of the year (which just so happened to also be the hottest and most humid day ever!) Elites and their guests were hosted on the gorgeous patio with a menu that boasts more locally sourced, farm fresh food than you can shake a stick at! The staff served an impressive spread of artisan flat-bread pizzas, shots of asparagus soup with bacon and goat cheese filled that torts that had yelpers yearning for more.

McYelpycollage2

Meanwhile, Ohio-bred Watershed Distillery kept us from completely melting with ice cold, refreshing cocktails with their signature vodka and gin. Washington Place put their own spin on 'em by whipping up sparkling cosmos and bees knees for all to enjoy! Talk about livin' la vida local! Magic Hat was also there to help us bear the heat with bottles of their #9 and Summer IPA. If there is a better way to cool down, I don't want to know.

McYelpycollage3

Elites were also greeted with their 2011 Squad gift from Yelp! Oh yeah—who wouldn't want to sport one of these bad-ass digital watches? But the giving didn't stop there. Guests also scooped up some of the freshest Yelp schwag to come 'round these parts. Yelp hand fans were clearly a favorite on this sweltering day, but folks were getting all riled up over the playing cards, ponchos, sunglasses and Yelp Eats mints! The two most farm-tastically dressed peeps really kicked their boots when they won watering cans filled with gardening tools, seeds, gloves, ponchos, sunglasses and tickets worth $40-100 to Ingenuity's Speakeasy party and a pass to one of the NEO Food Tours! The Speakeasy party passes will earn them complimentary dinner, drinks, entertainment, dancing at more at one of the hottest events this season. Congrats to yelper Lin W and guest Vasanth Pappu for being the two, lucky winners.

McYelpycollage4

What's a farm party without some barn animals, right? Our favorite photog and country gal, Jenny of The Cleveland Photobooth, took some ahh-mazing shots of us on bales of straw donning pig snouts, corncob pipes, straw hats, chicken beaks, beards and more!

Many huge and sincere thank yous go out to Megan, Scott, and the entire Washington Place staff, who not only hosted us and made the night awesome, but busted their butts in the intense heat serving up lots of hot yelpers. Also, thanks to Kelly from Watershed Distillery for pouring lots of locally-made and delicious spirits down out snouts and Jenny of The Cleveland Photobooth for snapping these party pics. Last, but not least, thank you to all the Elites and their guests who also braved the heat to come hang out!

McYelpycollage5

Relive the farm fresh experience through others by reading the event reviews! Didn’t get a chance to write one? It’s not too late! Dan S may have put it best when he yelped, “I had such a great time at this event, as always, and major props to the Washington Place Bistro's servers who braved the heat right along side all the yelpers!"

Yelp Cincinnati Sings It’s Heart Out at an Elite Event with Dhani Jones!

Posted by Alex Shebar

Crowd

“Food, drinks, and karaoke with an NFL linebacker? How freaking sweet is that?!”

It’s hard to describe Yelp Cincinnati’s latest Elite Event better than Jess K put it. On a warm sunny night, yelpers trekked up the treacherous hills of Mt. Adams for a night of good food, good drinks and surprisingly good singing at Yelp’s Karaoke with Dhani event at The Bow Tie Café

Bar
The chic, funky and comfortable café was the perfect spot for yelpers to meet and greet one another. Owned by Cincinnati Bengal and star of The Travel Channel’s Dhani Tackles the Globe, the café captures the essence of Dhani’s personality. Fantastic photography on the wall, ancient books strewn throughout, globes and maps and atlases everywhere and a giant whiteboard wall to write or draw on.

Atmopshere

"The nice, comfortable, quirky Bow Tie Cafe was an unexpected surprise," Howard M happily stated. "Once I heard it was owned by a Bengal, I was expected memorabilia and TVs everywhere. That was my prejudice, but I didn't see any of that." Instead, there was the perfect spot for conversation, drink and eats!

Food

And what eats there was! The café brought out a selection of their fantastic sandwiches, including cold cuts and hot Paninis. There was also plates of hummus on toast and mini-cupcakes with little bow ties on them. The food was so good, the staff had to constantly run back and forth, removing empty trays and replacing them with new ones. "I'm glad we arrived early as the food was all fantastic!" Brian C declared. "The red velvet mini cupcakes were highly addictive, yum!"

Karaoke

The only thing that could beat the food for quality was the entertainment, and we had our socks rocked right off. DJ Scott Wherle, of Hi-Vox Entertainment, began the night by mood setting with music but switched it up to karaoke about half way through … as soon as yelpers became brave enough to try it! There was a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll, and a lot of fun. Alex himself may have rocked the heck out of R.E.M.’s It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).

DhaniKaraoke DhaniKaraoke2

And the man himself even got up to do a little Otis Redding and Sitting on the Docks of The Bay to the delight of the crowd. Karaoke with Dhani indeed!

Beer

Of course, none of that singing would have been possible without the assistance of the night’s fantastic alcohol sponsors. Kentucky Ale brought their namesake beer as well as delicious rounds of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale and Kentucky Ale Light. The café’s staff were also creating cocktails using TY KU, a premium sake and Dhani’s personal alcohol brand.

The warmth of the evening even allowed people to walk outside with these drinks and sit on Bow Tie’s multi-story stone patio and watch the goings-on in Mt. Adam’s. What an event!

But don’t just take our word on the night’s awesomeness, you can read all the reviews right here. You can also check out the other awesome pics by photographer extraordinaire Anna Penny on the Official Yelp Flickr page!

The night? An win for sure!

Yelp + Broke Ass Stuart's Young, Broke & Beautiful Launch Party

This past Monday night, we teamed up with our old pal Broke Ass Stuart to check out the world premiere of his new IFC show Young, Broke & Beautiful. Homeboy's been blazing his own path through San Francisco for the better part of a decade, now you can catch his mug every Friday night at 11:00pm on IFC, and we couldn't be more proud of the giant oak tree our little acorn has become.

Streaming his escapades from a jaunt through New Orleans (episode #4 of the series) on a massive projection screen at Public Works in the Mission, lines wrapped around the block for a chance to see Stu's big break in person. Sam Adams provided cold (complimentary) beers, La Cocina food truck Chac Mool doled out tasty traditional Mayan cuisine, The Workshop rocked it with DIY crafts such as a "Make your Own Beer Koozie" station, The Indie Mart represented with unique local vendors, and we even tapped Ashkon, Richie Cunning, DJ Bad DJ, and Hard French for performances throughout. Blizzow!

Yelp's Fedorable Elite Event @ Mr. Lew's Win Win Bar & Grand Sazerac Emporium

Tuesday marked Yelp's Fedorable Elite Event at Mr. Lew's Win Win Bar and Grand Sazerac Emporium. Yelpers came in droves and sported their most pimpin' headwear, ranging from old school fedoras to flirty J-Lo esque large-brimmed hats, to enjoy a hang at the latest project from the brains behind legendary Tenderloin cocktail haven, Bourbon & BranchPisco Porton and Mr. Lew's gaggle of talented mixologists worked hand-in-hand to concoct a slew of phenomenal Peruvian Gentleman cocktails made special just for this little shindig, and consisting of Pisco Porton, lemon, honey, ginger, and salt. Yum!

As a nifty little parting gift, each Yelp Elite left the event with an exclusive and limited edition Yelp Elite watch in hand. Channeling the spirit of the '80s, these throwback wrist accoutrements were easily the highlight of the night.

Bond, Patio at BOND: We Spy Boston Elites!

Posted by Damien S

An afternoon of perfectly cloudless skies got a little bit more perfecter, thanks to the refreshing libations, UV protection and oasis views from the outdoor patio at BOND Restaurant and Lounge.

More than 100 Elites and guests gathered outside the Langham Hotel Monday to soak up rays, tracks from DJ Mario and Bombay Sapphire cocktails, shaken stirred and strained masterfully from the staff of three outdoor bars. Taking the spirit to the next level, the lovely ladies of Sapphire offered blindfolded tastings of the gin, along with each of its botanical ingredients at the mini-World Bazaar.

Chef Evan Leavy sent out tasters of grilled artichoke, olive and Vermont goat cheese pizza, boxes of sweet and spicy calamari, tuna-watermelon pops, Wagyu beef tataki, and smoked New Bedford sea scallop with corn relish. For the sweeter teeth, the kitchen featured their signature BOND push pops, blueberry thyme soda with vanilla ice cream, and crispy banana fritters with mango coulis.

The rather impromptu event offered yelpers the goods to keep their peepers in tiptop "I spy" shape with brand spankin' new Yelp sunglasses and for the Elites, a very special chunk of accoutrement for their naked wrist. It was time to party, and now they had proof. Plus, two lucky winners roped in either a pair of VIP tickets to Taste of Cambridge or two tix to Second Glass' A Night in Lisbon. Sweet!

The June Monsoon At Junoon!

Clocking out and ready to party, New York Elites kicked back on the Indian inspired sofas and swings while indulging in delights fit for royalty last night at Junoon! Honoring the first day of summer and giving a nod to the raucous rain storms this month, folks donned their fancy frocks and swanky suits to enjoy the happiest of hours chock full of refreshments and high-class hobnobbing.

Screen shot 2011-06-22 at 3.05.47 PM Screen shot 2011-06-22 at 3.07.12 PM

A restaurant that's drawn top honors from yelpers and food critics alike, the team from Junoon served out platters of Monkifish Tikka, Piri-Piri Shrimp, Chicken Seek Kebabs, Veggie Samosa, Achari Mushrooms and more. As Jaime H observed, "The trays just kept coming, and coming, and coming." Each dish was more unique and amazing than the next!

Samosa Screen shot 2011-06-22 at 2.59.20 PM Screen shot 2011-06-22 at 3.02.34 PM

Between mouthfuls, yelpers cooled off with Cardamom Starr and Peppery Pear Starr African Rum cocktails designed and sampled for the first time at this event. As Allison C noted, "it's nice to have a drink to write home about." Er, Yelp about! And when guests weren't slurping on top-notch concoctions, ONEHOPE Wines were there to whet the appetite. Need a reason to clink glasses? The sale of each bottle of wine goes towards raising money and awareness for top world charities! Could you possibly still be thirsty? If all those libations still didn't keep yelpers cool enough, 1947 Lager made sure that guests got their retro-chic buzz on before the sun went down!

HUGE thank you to the incredible Junoon staff for hosting and indulging us, along with all the incredible sponsors for making us forget that it's a weekday. See what everyone is saying on Talk, leave your review of the event and scan the photos right here.

Until next time, yelpers, stay funny, useful and cool!

A Little Bit of NOLA in NYC

It's hot and it's humid. Basically, Brooklyn feels like summer in New Orleans lately...but never more so than last night at d.b.a.! The Brooklyn branch of NOLA's legendary Frenchmen St. bar welcomed NYC Elite yelpers for a fantastic fête with a bit of Cajun flair.

Screen shot 2011-06-22 at 12.41.52 PM Screen shot 2011-06-22 at 12.50.57 PM Screen shot 2011-06-22 at 12.38.21 PM

If you've ever spent some time in The Big Easy, you know that it's all about flavorful food and fun. Nothing in New York embodies that feeling quite like Tchoup Shop, the "pop-up" restaurant that is a true New Orleans backyard BBQ experience. Last night, Chef Simon Glenn (who sets up in d.b.a.'s backyard on summer Sunday afternoons) was slingin' all sorts of samples off his can't-miss catering menu: brisket and duck liver boudin balls, crispy chicken biscuits with homemade pepper jelly, smoked andouille sausage sliders, Char-BQ'd Bluepoint oysters with spicy ginger sesame hoisin that "kicked Paul L in the face with their flavored heat" and more!

Since you can't have a proper N'awlins BBQ without a little booze, the bar was mixing Maker's Mark Mint Juleps, whiskey sours and more. These beautiful bourbon drinks were crafted with both the brand new, smooth as silk Maker's 46, as well as the standard Maker's Mark which Kevin G correctly calls "one of the best commercially-available bourbons on the liquor stores shelves."

After a few cocktails, Brooklyn's best yelpers got lei'd and stepped into a Sweet Booth to celebrate the 1st day of summer and capture the Cajun fun on camera. If you missed out on the madness (or if you just want another taste of the fantastic food), make sure you make it out to d.b.a. one of these Sundays to check out Tchoup Shop in a beautiful Brooklyn backyard. We know you'll leave agreeing that d.amn, b.rooklyn's a.wesome.

Lastly, don't forget to peep the the pictures from our very own Joi B, as well as crack photog Brent Herrig. And of course, the reviews tell the tale of an awesome event!

A Night of Blues & Brews for Salt Lake City Elites

Posted by Jeffrey

There's no more fitting place to celebrate summer solstice than The Sun and Moon Cafe. A cozy locale up the canyon, a delightful dining room, and a patio so sublime you sit for hours and watch the daylight turn to sweet summer dusk.

Sun moon sign  Sun moon wide
Tonight the warm air was filled with something else – the aroma of delicious food being served from the kitchen. Stuffed mushroom caps, homemade Argentinian style beef empanadas, grilled spicy chipotle shrimp with roasted red pepper aioli, and many more. The air was also charged with the soulful sounds of blues man Scott Holt. Currently on tour from Nashville, he stopped in Salt Lake and performed some seriously sweet jams. The guitar was so gripping, the beat so bodacious, that yelpers were moved out of their chairs to dance in the dining room!

The brews were truly Epic. No, really. Epic Brewing was on and the suds flowed freely as Elites sampled a few of their award-winning craft brews and yelpers were able to talk with the Epic brewmaster himself.

Amazing blues, killer brews, raffle prizes (including tickets to the Utah Beer Festival) all made for rad night of Elite Event fun. As the sun set on the longest day of the year, yelpers could only ask one question: "Can we do it again tomorrow?"

Yelp Helps Detroit At Café Cortina!

On June 15th 2011 sixteen Detroit area non-profits were on hand to educate a packed house at delicious Italian eatery Café Cortina about the work they do and how we can help. For dessert? Miniature cannolis satisfied the sweet tooth! Also set up were two pasta stations serving up plates of Cortina’s signature sauces for hungrier appetites.

The rain fell, moving everything from the gorgeous patio indoors but that didn’t stop the fun as Ann Arbor’s deep funk and soul outfit Third Coast Kings brought down the house from right inside the doors.

Yelp´s Jazz Jamsession @ ZWE

Posted by Andreas R

-------------------

Vienna is a city, in which art and culture are hidden in every corner. Sometimes one can even accidentally walk by: the ZWE is hiding modestly in a basement in the beautiful second district of Vienna. The jazz club opened it´s doors for us for one night to Yelp´s Jazz Jamsession!

A8-6
Fitting to the Viennese charme of the place, lots of beer was poured to greet the Yelpers. Zwe, the owner of the ZWE, kept the whole selection of his bar open for us, so that everybody found the right drink.

A8-5
The Yelpers started their discovery through the club and discovered a loaden buffet table filled with homemade chilli con carne, salad plates and chocolate cakes. The highlight of the evening was yet to come though: to justify it´s reputation as a great jazz club, a band had been organised to jam for the crowd. It was more than impressive what the conservatory students managed to get out of their instruments and they definitely created the desire for future visits at ZWE.

A8-7
Even after the two hours of the elite event were over, the band came back on stage for an encore. The ZWE is a sanctuary for people who are in the need of good music, homemade food and who don´t want to go home yet but still want feel like they are at home.

Here you can read what the yelpers think about the evening and here are some more fotos for you.

A big thank you goes out to Zwe and Ursula, who welcomed us with their Viennese charme at the ZWE and who are responsible for this great night.

Servus und bis bald!

The Chicagoland Yelp Community Goes Posh At Yelp Country Club!

Posted by Jelena Z

Start with summery splendor in the grass, take a page from the Official Preppy Playbook and borrow a day of San Diego's enviable climate and what do you get? The Chicago 'Burbs biggest bash yet... Yelp Country Club! On Sunday June 12th, hundred of yelpers donned their most dapper duds and made their way to Wheeling's Chevy Chase Country Club for a preppy, playful (and plaid!) adventure. After entering the raffle and getting outfitted with the hottest bling at the Yelp goody bag buffet, guests sidled up to the club's regal main bar for a Firefly Sweet Tea (or the new Skinny Tea) Vodka and lemonade libation dubbed the Palmer/Daly, Firefly Pink Lemonade vodka, Buffalo Trace's bourbon-kissed take on a glorified Mint Julep and Savida Sangria's sweet salute to punch-drunk love. Who needs umbrella drinks with cocktails this sunny?

IMG_0423IMG_0424
IMG_0515_Version_2IMG_0513

And then, there was more. Refreshing Magners Cider and Dewar's smooth scotch awaited guests as they descended into the stately ballroom. What about wine? Napa schnapa... between offerings from Lulu B. Wine, Opolo Vineyards, Domaine Berrien Cellars, Bowers Harbor Vineyards and Fenn Valley Vineyards, Yelp Country Club's ode to the grape was nothing to scoff at, good sirs and fair ladies. Food galore also lined the perimeter of the oh-so-fancy ballroom walls – guests complemented their wine selections with cheese and charcuterie, noshed on pizza from Wapaghetti's, tried the delightfully dainty, artfully-designed desserts courtesy of Deerfields Bakery, sipped on Tom & Eddie's Häagen-Dazs milkshakes, snacked on healthy popchips, took a bite out of Cookies Fresco and indulged in Kokku's artisan chocolate fondue. Vitamin Water was onsite to quench, and some got a little spicy with Jimmy Luv's Bloody Mary Mix.

IMG_0430IMG_0437
IMG_0433IMG_0450

Outside, a tasty spectacle awaited party revelers... Chevy Chase roasted and hand-carved a 120-pound pig stuffed with beef round and pineapple! Two Brothers Brewing Company untapped the freshest and most delicious kegs and J.D. Kadds brought their smoker to deliver savory pork and beef brisket sliders in addition to hickory-smoked Polish sausage. Not an empty belly in the club! Honest Tea tantalized with their line of organic teas, and Monster Energy hooked up the endurance and cornhole while others played a match of croquet or bocce. For those intent on exercising their competitive edge, Adams Golf sponsored a putting contest replete with special prizes. From Heathers to Gossip Girl, everyone's penchant for prep was fulfilled.

IMG_0403IMG_0482
IMG_0484IMG_0522

Nothing is more handsome than a gentleman in a suit... Astor & Black Custom Clothiers provided suit measurements and displayed the finest of fabrics. Don't worry, the ladies also received a generous dose of doting. Mario Tricoci's glam squad set up shop to provide quick stylings, expert make-up application, polish changes and massages. For those interested in skincare, Carie Parkes demonstrated the Galvanic Spa and the Biophotonic Scanner. Whew... look who's fancy now! With those looks, guests couldn't help but get snapped by Matt Ginger of Ginger by Design and Zoran Orlic of zerostudio. ShutterBox beckoned partygoers with their now legendary photo booth pictures and Ruthie Hauge Photography created a Vanity Fair-esque photoshoot on the sprawling lawn... wait, do you model? Buy Ruthie's hi-res photos here and peep the low-res versions here.

IMG_0411_Version_25832802170_835eda7e33_o

Back in the ballroom, the dancetastic Cage and Aquarium Productions' DJ inspired some rug-cutting moves, raffle winners were announced (hello, free golf and hotel stays!) and the entertainment finale featured a full-on burlesque session from the lovely dames of Vaudezilla. Anticipation heightened, cheeks flushed, and the applause roared. What a finish to a spectacular event! Thanks to all who attended, our gracious sponsors/vendors and our sponsoring host, the chic Chevy Chase Country Club. We're sad it's over too, but you can relive all the magical moments by reading the reviews... 'til next time, yelpers!

Yelp's Day at the Fair at Frank!

Posted by kelly stocker

Remember when you were a kid and the carnival came to town? The air filled with smells of frying corndogs, shrieks of delight and fear, sugar highs and puking after a particularly jarring ride... well it was like that. But without rides and puking. Stu R sums it up: "104 degrees outside.  Snowcones, cotton candy, and free booze inside. Can't beat that."

Frank1

So yelpers piled into Frank Hot Dogs Cold Beer, escaping the summer heat and entering into a cool oasis filled with everything your inner twelve-year-old dreams of. Including Famous Vodka and Magic Hat #9. It was Yelp's Day at the Fair! And Crystal A had high hopes... "Maybe after a few salty dogs or Magic Hat #9s, you TOO can get lucky at the fair!"

Frank3

To bely the 100+ temps outside, Ice Queens snow cones doled out the most mouth watering sno cones. Their shaved ice concoctions (75 different flavors!) were renamed on the spot by Catherine T: "Ice Queens make THE most delicious snow cones I've ever eaten. I ate so much of that stuff, they should be called snow comas." Baldo Face Art has done parties with us before... but this time they went above and beyond, using new special rainbow paint to make folks look like gorgeous butterflies. From Tasha M: "What could be better than a night of rainbows and glitter and butterflies?" Basically nothing.

Frank2

In the other corner of the room, towering mounds of cotton candy, hummus and curry wurst found their way onto plates and fingers and faces. In between sips and bites and booze, our balloon artists wandered around, fashioning hats and little wristlets. Emily Lim of Mac N Cheese Media captured the entire gorgeous affair. Amy D's got it right: "Yelps Day at the Fair had us skipping around like a bunch of sugar rushed school kids; juggling snow cones, cotton candy, and drinks, be it FAMOUS Vodka cocktails or Magic Hat #9."

Until the next sugar rush, SYOY!

Denver Yelp's Indoor Picnic

Last night 100 Denver yelpers and their guests got cozy at Backcountry Provisions for a fun-filled indoor picnic! The gracious host venue supplied lucky folks with many a delicious sandwich including a "day after Thanksgiving sandwich" with turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce that made Sherri S fall in love with an inanimate object. Also on hand for nomming were multiple salads, brownies, and cookies.

Picnic

No picnic is complete without liquid refreshments so red sangria and Dale's Pale Ale were on hand to quench everyone's thirst. The one thirst that was unstoppable though was one for victory! Hasbro generously donated dozens of games from Trivial Pursuit to a Game of Things, Pictionary to Taboo, and many more for yelpers to enjoy during the evening. While everyone walked away with a Trivial Pursuit Slam deck, 3 lucky winners took home a copy of each game available at the event.

Picnic2

All the fun and games were captured by the wonderful Phil H and you can see the photos here. And while you're at it peruse the reviews and Talk thread to see all the happenings from last night. Thanks to all you yelpers that are playas for such a fun-filled time!

Until next time, SYOY (See You On Yelp)!

Edmonton Elites Get Crazy for Coffee Cocktails at Transcend

Posted by Brittany

The Edmonton Elites descended on the newly-opened Jasper Ave location of Transcend Coffee for an elite evening of coffee, coffee cocktails, prizes, a little java widsom, and the hottest South American style eats!

Coffee connoisseur Josh got the party going by adding some delectable liqueurs to Transcend's signature roast.

YelpElite003 YelpElite014 YelpElite025

James ran us through a quick coffee-tasting, where he taught us a little bit about where those magical beans come from, and we tasted a few different roasting methods. Kristin K had fun learning the "little facts - like coffee beans actually come from the seeds of cherries!"

YelpElite008 YelpElite020

And the perfect pairing with the tasty Transcend roast was a sneak-preview of their menu! Quoc C was a fan of every dish, even the ones he couldn't pronounce. "I can tell you they all had really good flavours, particularly the smoking hot salsa verde!" And Kristin K loved the "truly delectable corn tortilla with shredded pork, soft crumbled cheese, and fresh cilantro." Delectable indeed!

  YelpElite037 YelpElite009

With bellies full of a red-seal meal and hot coffee-liqueur combos, the Edmonton Elites partied the night away. Lea A has huge praise for the Transcend staff, who are "so welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable about their work and product." And Aditya R left inspired to try to "master my tastebuds and differentiate between sour and bitter." Taste on!

Thanks to the most awesome staff at Transcend for sharing their eats, treats, and knowledge with us. Major shout out to Dave Clark and Targa Communications for the sweet photos of the night. Don't forget to check out reviews of the Elite Event, and make sure to add your own, too!

Thanks for an energetic and excellent evening, Edmonton Elites! I'll see you at the next party, and SYOY!

Denver Yelpers Rock and Roll All Night

Denver yelpers had a blast from the past last Tuesday evening celebrating a whole night dedicated to glam rock of the 80s. Around 100 rockers started out at the Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Denver where they were treated to Wines that Rock - a group of wines inspired by rock music including Synchronicity Red Blend and Woodstock Chardonnay - and a smattering of delicious eats like Mahi Mahi sliders, burgers, roasted vegetables and an assortment of fruits, cheeses and other accoutrements. Best of all? Everyone got into the mood (including the staff) by donning their best 80s rock and roll outfits! As Leah S put it, "Hard Rock was paradise city..."

HardRock1

After the rockin' refreshments everyone headed over to the Buell Theater to catch opening night of the musical Rock of Ages - a story of a boy from Detroit and a small town girl who are in LA chasing their dreams when they fall in love on the Sunset Strip. The hits kept coming throughout the show including We Built This City, The Final Countdown, Here I Go Again, and of course, Don't Stop Believin'. As Tiffany W writes, it was the "face meltiest Yelp event everrrrr!!!"

HardRock2

Of course, we have to give a standing ovation to our photographer of the night, Dustin Van Nieulande, who captured many priceless outfits. If you want to create posters to paper your bedroom walls with those photos you can check them out here. And don't forget to have a look at the reviews and Talk thread for even more fun memories of the decade that just won't quit.

Thanks to everyone who got wild, wild, wild with us! And until I see you next time keep on rockin' in the free world,

Foie gras, tapenade, chocolat...

Yelp never does things half-way, so to celebrate the first year for Yelp in France the theme of our first Open Party was made-to-measure madness! To blow out the candles on our first birthday, over 300 Parisian yelpers came out to sample custom cocktails, food and activities crafted especially for the occassion by 14 hot local businesses at the fabulous fashion studio and showroom,  Door Studios
Pic 105
The party started on an effervescent note with a sparkly glass of the hip-new soda Tumult and some slices of sweet and savory quiches by Tartes Kluger . Nothing better than an icy bottle of Astroblonde from the artisanal Parisian brewery Demory to wash it all down before hitting the sophisticated stand of Nicolas Julhès for three different whiskeys paired with foie gras, fresh tapenade and smoked salmon.
Before guests got their mugs immortalized on film (yes film!) by the sharp shooters at the Lomography Check In !, they swung by the LR make-up corner for a little touch of this or that. And just when they thought they’d seen it all, they were lead downstairs to the basement where ExBanza was mixing soul tracks as a backdrop to the sexy DIY food porn buffet of Emperor Norton of Paris, the spicy Mexican cooking of El Nopal, and the ginger and violette infused cocktails of it-bar, Candelaria
Door3
Between two turns on the dancefloor in front of the film projection by Leslie M, yelpers continued their culinary adventures on a sweet note with the experimental Algerian pastries by Diamande, homemade chocolate cookies by Lola’s Cookies, artisanal ice cream by Mary served with a shot of espresso by Vélocafé. And to top of the made-to-measure theme, guests gave the final decorative finish to the evening by coloring in the hand-drawn mural by the graphic duo A&M.
Thanks again to all of those who joined us at the event, we’re already plotting the next opportunity to party with you! If you want to leave a review of the evening, you can do so here. The photos are on our Flickr page and the film by Maxime P is here

Yelp Chicago's On A Boat!

Posted by Johnny Todd

The most wonderful time of the year for most folks comes at the end of the year. This isn’t true for Chicagoans. After 15 months of winter, this is the most wonderful time of the year. And, what better way to celebrate this most wonderful time of the year than with a perfect summer evening aboard the Spirit of Chicago? Two hundred invited members of the Yelp Chicago Elite Squad got the chance to enjoy Yelp’s Three-Hour Tour.

IMG_8284 IMG_8413 IMG_8419 IMG_8424

This was no ordinary tour. Thankfully, Gilligan was nowhere to be seen, but the Howell’s would have felt right at home with the accommodations. Fresh from a million dollar renovation, the Spirit of Chicago has never looked better. From gleaming dance floors to jaw-dropping decks, the old girl still has it. And, she showed it off from the beginning.

IMG_8300 IMG_8563 IMG_8580 IMG_8658

As soon as Elites checked in, they were treated to a professional portrait complete with life preserver  and view of Lake Michigan in the background. Fresh from the photo shoot, dazzled Elites boarded the private deck and were greeted with perfectly chilled glasses of Lulu B Chardonnay. Wine in hand (or down the hatch), Elites made their way to expertly laid-out table settings of white linens, abundant silverware, Yelp sunglasses, and Elite Squad watches. What’s the time? It’s time to get yelped!

IMG_8321 IMG_8346 IMG_8519 IMG_8520

But, what’s a table without food? Touring Elites wouldn’t know because they didn’t just have food; they had a buffet. Hungry Elites were sated with mouth-watering Thai Beef, Caprese Pasta Salad, Pineapple Chicken, Tilapia, Twice-Baked Potatoes, and many more options. Is there any wonder why so many went back for seconds (or, thirds? No names. Andre). This isn’t to mention dessert courses of chocolate fondue, fresh fruit, cheesecake, brownies, and other delectables. To accompany the fantastic food, Lulu B  Cabernet Sauvignon and Magners Cider (Original and Pear). No matter what they sipped, mouths and bellies were happy!

IMG_8340 IMG_8335 IMG_8504 IMG_8767

Not satisfied with only happy noses and tongues, the Spirit staff decided that Elites’ ears and eyes must be treated as well. How? Glad you asked. In addition to superb wait skills, the staff of the Spirit can entertain with the best of them. Several servers serenaded Elites to stylings of Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift and Jason Mraz. Those who didn’t sing got out on the dance floor and Dougied and Wobbled to the amazing tunes spun by DJ Chris Somera. For the non-dancing fools of the crew, the top decks showcased a view of the Second City most never get to see. Sunset against the backdrop of the Chicago skyline could only be topped by watching a fireworks display on Lake Michigan against a pitch-black sky. Perfect.

IMG_8626 IMG_8853 IMG_8902 IMG_8906

If you weren’t there or want to relive the evening, the expert eye of Colin Lyons managed to snap every moment of the 5-star night. Gaze at his stellar shots here. If you’re a fan of the written word, take a peek at what guests said here. It’s said that Chicagoans suffer through winter to get to summer. The Three-Hour Tour was proof of that. It was the most wonderful time of the year.

Queens Elites Afternoon/BBQ/Night Time/Dance Party Extravaganza!

This weekend, the mighty borough of Queens saw a double dose of delicious Elite Squad action with not one, but TWO events on Saturday, June 11, bringing together Yelp's most prolific for a quintessentically New York Summer day.

Koreana groupAvel groups small 4Ladies

When things heat up in the city, you'll find folks fanning themselves as temperatures rise while grilling it up in the early afternoon under the hot, hot sun. Though the weather wasn't exactly on our side, we gathered indoors for some good ol' fashioned seasonal fun: BBQ, Korean Style! Inside the expansive dining room of Koreana, Elites settled in for a two-hour feast, featuring grilled-right-in-front-of-you meats and endless banchan! To complement the spicy bites, Coruba Rum and Alize teamed up to create cool summer cocktails with fresh fruit, ginger beer and just a hint of mint!

After a day of downing delicious BBQ, you'll find find real New Yorkers gearing up for a night on the town and this day was no excpetion. At 8pm, Elites arrived at the brand-new nightlife locale Avel in Astoria for an exclusive preview party before they opened their doors for the grand opening to the public at 10pm! In a gorgeous room with a monster sound system, guests sipped cocktails from a specialty menu, snacking on bites from Avel's kitchen and getting down into the wee hours courtesy of Jarrit Scotti & Rolo.

For a day of delicous food, dancing, and merry making, a big round of applause to the staff at both Koreana and Avel, as well as the lovely folks from Coruba and Alize! And to everyone who made it out, a big thank you is in order for making this one amazing day of Eliteness!

For a more in-depth desciption of the day's festivities, check out the reviews of the events at Koreana and Avel! Eye candy, snapped by our very own Wing L, can be found here and here and gossip lives on here!

Sacramento Elites Get MADD...About Broadway!

Posted by Alex L

Over 100 Sactown Elites gathered at Slice of Broadway on Thursday for a star-studded homage to New York's storied theatre district! With show tunes bumping, yelpers entered dressed to the nines or as their favorite Broadway characters. Decorations to fit the theme were donated by Party Concierge.
Picnik collage Our gracious hosts provided a surplus of pizzas with creative combos like hamburger (ketchup, mustard, meat, french fries) and various other classics. Each tasty slice was washed down with generous pours of Lagunitas, Deschutes, or a house red wine. Of course, this being a fundraiser for MADD, all alcohol was consumed responsibly.Picnik collage2 Elites then vied for gift certificates donated by 10 local businesses through a raffle. Over $200 in proceeds went to MADD, the nation's premier organization working to stop drunk driving and support victims of this violent crime!Picnik collage3Even though the evenings events were laid out in a fancy "Yelpbill" printed by Capitol Digital, a surprise was still in store. A Broadway song tribute was performed by Lauren Metzinger, an incredibly talented and super adorable young gal from the Sacramento Theatre Company! After she brought the house down, DJ Rated R raised the roof with some some funky jams that were as hot as the pizza. The dance floor was blazing, much like the final act of "Hair" - except without the nudity. And because the neon lights are bright on Broadway, each Elite was treated to a complimentary pair of Yelp shades! Yelpers Get Fancy @ Yelp's Garden Party in St. Louis!

Posted by Aimee

On Tuesday evening, Yelp St. Louis Elites (aka “the heat warriors”) gathered at the gorgeous Brio Tuscan Grille in Plaza Frontenac for Yelp’s Garden Party! Brio’s spacious patio, clad in gorgeous white curtains and complete with ample seating and pink and silver balloons, made for the perfect setting. Fine looking ladies in sundresses and hats made their way to the party, and the gentlemen didn’t look so bad themselves!

Garden1 Garden2

The Garden Party menu was full of robust dishes and bigtime flavor, and guests enjoyed everything from spicy shrimp with eggplant, to roasted garlic, spinach and artichoke dip, to margherita flatbread! The chefs were working hard all evening to showcase their best stuff and definitely showed why Brio is one of the best spots in St. Louis for Italian food. As one party-goer said, “I’m so full but I seriously can’t stop eating!”

Garden3 Garden4

To cater to the sweet-toothed Elites (and also to keep ourselves from having a heat stroke) Frostbite Ice Cream set up camp to pass out a variety of samples of their homemade ice cream. Frostbite uses the finest local ingredients whenever possible, then churns their ice cream in old-fashioned, wooden ice cream freezers. So basically... yum. Have you ever tried champagne ice cream? St. Louisans would advise you to get on that as soon as possible!

Frost Jackie Kate

Sobieski was on hand passing out the oh-so boozy signature drink called the Bumblebee, which was made up of Sobieski cytron vodka, Citronge orange liqueur, and sweet and sour. The incredible ice sculpture that held the bottles of vodka completely stole the show and had everyone talking all night! (I'm still trying to figure out how that thing stayed frozen for two hours in high 90 degree temperatures.) Cheers!

Sob3 Sob

Lots of posing (and bubble blowing) went on at the Garden Party photo area, and there was also a watercolor painting station so Elites could unleash (and show off!) their creative side. I’ve gotta say, there was a lot of talent going down over there!

Pose1 Pose2
Pose3 Pose4
Paint2 Paint

As guests filed out, they were given their own geranium to take home and plant, complete with some Yelp Life gloves. I guess we’ll see if St. Louis Elites are as good as gardening as they are at writing about local businesses!

Gloves Night

Make sure you check out the full spread of photos and read the glowing reviews! Big thanks to Brea Photography for capturing amazing moments and memories.

Counting down the days until the next one,

South Bay Yelp Elites Get Treated To A Broadway Show!

Posted by Abby Schwarz

Yelp SB Mamma Mia

South Bay Elites showed off their inner stars on Tuesday night at the Broadway San Jose premiere of the hit musical, MAMMA MIA!

Yelpers and their guests met at Pagoda restaurant, located inside the Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Jose, for some pre-show fun. Here they noshed on themed appetizers like the "Honey Honey Walnut Prawns" and "Voulez Vous Veggie Spring Rolls". They also had the option of ordering some fun cocktails, including the "Winner Takes All". Luckily, they all maintained their manners and there was no "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" happening...

As curtain call approached, Elites and their guests headed over to Broadway San Jose's awesome theater to enjoy the show, packed full of classic Abba hits! From all accounts, it was a lively rendition of the show, which was making its debut in the Bay Area that evening.

A good night was had by all!

A Kombucha Kegger To Remember!

Posted by peter d.

Crazy thunderstorms and obscene heat for early summer didn't stop Brooklyn yelpers from coming out for [what we're claiming is] the world's first Kombucha Kegger!

Screen shot 2011-06-10 at 11.12.18 AM Screen shot 2011-06-10 at 11.11.43 AM  Screen shot 2011-06-10 at 11.12.53 AM

The sky may have opened up outside immediately before (and during), but once we all made it inside the clean, spartan digs at Hosh Yoga, we were warm and dry. The near 100 degree heat of the day didn't dissipate right away, but with Yelp fans available, everyone kept cool as they chowed down on wonderful wraps provided by nearby neighborhood favorite, Lite Bites. The diner with the damn good service offered up a pretty platter of turkey, tuna, smoked salmon and more.

Screen shot 2011-06-10 at 11.09.41 AM Screen shot 2011-06-10 at 11.09.55 AM Screen shot 2011-06-10 at 11.10.56 AM

And of course, our Kombucha Kegger wouldn't have lived up to the name without the tasty fermented tea, courtesy of Bad Ass Organics. A locavore's dream, BAO's fresh kombucha is packed with vitamins, enzymes and digestion-aiding probiotic cultures that provide a natural energy boost in a low calorie beverage. No keg stands were caught on camera, but that doesn't mean they didn't happen.

Screen shot 2011-06-10 at 11.11.52 AM Screen shot 2011-06-10 at 11.12.26 AM Screen shot 2011-06-10 at 11.12.09 AM

It might not have been our typical event, but it was certainly a welcome respite from the hectic heat outside. A huge thanks goes out to the Hosh Yoga staff (especially Hamid, Becca and Yuuki) for welcoming us into their place and showing us what the pay-what-you-like yoga studio is all about (clearly, hanging out and having fun). Whether or not you made it out, be sure to check out the pictures and the reviews! Have a great weekend, and we'll catch you on the flip side...

Cheers,

Domo Arigato, Mr. Yelpboto Elite Event in Minneapolis

Posted by Annie D

Collage1

Despite winds that might have blown their bots onto Lyndale Avenue, Twin Cities Elites flipped their switches to party-mode at Domo Arigato, Mr. Yelpboto!

Collage4

moto-i, Uptown's own sake brewery, hosted this rooftop event for nearly 150 yelpers who came dressed in their robo-best. Minneapolis yelpers never ever shirk their duties when it comes to representing in costume and everybody looked good enough to break a few hearts and trip a few circuits. If you cannot compute, here's a picture of Jared M. texting that had us dying of laughter.

  Collage3

Elites powered up on Thai meatball skewers, pork buns, tofu lettuce wraps, cucumber skewers and taro chips with chili aioli while sipping on Tokyo Shandy cocktails, as well as Schell's and house white wine.

The winners of the raffle drawing are... Brendan B. and Cait M.! Message me to find out what you won!

Thanks (rather, domo) to all those who attended, especially those who generously donated to the North Minneapolis Recovery Fund for tornado relief, and to our sponsors moto-i and Schell's Brewery—if you'd like to read more, peep the reviews on Yelp. And lastsly but not leastly, thanks to the lovely and talented Katie Workinger from Point & Blog for working her photo magic.

Yelp Elites Celebrate Calgary's Quaintest 'Hood: Inglewood

Posted by Wendy

The clouds part and the sun shines when the Yelp Elite Squad is in town. After days of rain, Calgarians brought back the rays on a sunny Sunday afternoon at DaDe Art & Design Lab for Yelp's Inglewood Block Party, the kick off of for our first ever Passport to Inglewood. Eats from local hot spots Bite Groceteria, Hose & Hound, Wilde Grainz and WilderNest made for an impressive spread as Elites and guests mixed and mingled and put their passports full of offers to good use.

Room

Joel S relates: "How does one sum up DaDe? They have a wonderful eclectic collection of genuine Chinese antique furniture, contemporary art and furniture, and Jackson Pollack themes. There was much to arouse my need for visual pleasures. Early Cambrian blown glass fossils were the icing on the cake. Glass trilobites have to be seen."

Crostinis, cheese spreads and bread, samplings of wings and meatballs–neighbourhood food stops showed off a sampling of the culinary diversity this community can cook up. Reginald T was most impressed with the "bread sticks that looked like twigs" included in the presentation of cheeses from Bite. "Those things blew my mind..."

Food

Prizes from local businesses wrapped up the afternoon as excited Elites and guests won gifts from Savour Fine Foods and Kitchenware, 4Cats Inglewood, Mid-Century Dweller, Kickaxe Guitars, and Riva's - The Ecostore and event moments were fabulously captured by Amy Lavonne Photography.

Yelp Edinburgh's Beer Garden BBQ @ The Outhouse!

Posted by Jenny Lovatt

Beer, burgers, rain and rum. Sounds like the magic ingredients for a proper Scottish BBQ, and last night Yelp Edinburgh threw its first of the season! 50 yelpers followed the smell of sizzling meaty goodness to The Outhouse's beer garden, brollies at the ready, to feast on some of the finest Crombie's beef burgers on The Manna House fresh baked rolls, St. Lucia Distilleries rum tasting and a final surprise sweet treat from The Manna House patisserie. As Mirren F quipped before her first dram, 'rock and rum!'

BlogPost1
'Ahhh Scotland, where people are optimistic enough to plan BBQs in June, even when there had been thunder, lightning and hail the day before' muses Emily V. Did that stop us? 'Rain? Thunder? Pfft! Outhouse, barbecue, rum and cakes. You do the math!' was Joe A's response! And so as The Outhouse fired up their barbie and yelpers started to fill up the bar inside, there was no time lost in forming a queue for the burgers.

BlogPost2
And what burgers they were! Crombie's quarter pounders - some of the freshest, local coo on a bun. And not just any buns: The Manna House, Easter Road's very own patisserie and bakery, had baked up a batch for the occasion. Throw in some relish, mustard and a pint of beer and many a happy munching yelpers there were!

Blogpost3
Burgers in our bellies was a good idea before the rum, and Susan D agrees 'as what followed was a rum tasting marathon, with white following dark, and spiced following white.. or was it the other way around?!' Ed from St. Lucia Distilleries began with an explaination of the history of the rum trade and process of ageing whilst Graeme served up the drams.

BlogPost4
Joe A is proving a track record for remembering the finer details after a fair few drams, so we'll hand it to his sharp memory to recount the Chairman's Reserve 'a wickedly bourbon-esque number', the 'divinely sugary white beast' that is Toz, the 'smoother, rarity and a treat' of Admiral Rodney and the Chairman's Reserve Spiced which everyone agreed 'smelled like Christmas!' After a wee nip of all four, it's safe to say everyone had forgotten about the rain!

BlogPost5
BlogPost6

As it was drawing closer to the parties end, there was one final surprise for these lucky yelpers. Not only had The Manna House wrapped the burgers in the best bread in town; their pastry chef, Jean-Phillipe, had crafted some 'very sophisticated' looking cakes.

BlogPost8
Tray bakes these were not. Strawberry and kirsche ganache, chocolate truffle fondant, and chocolate on top of chocolate on a base of biscuit chocolate. There was a moment of revered silence as the sheer, lush splendour of these little beauties melted onto our tastebuds: 'small but packed with so much gorgeousness' sighs Emily V.

BlogPost7
As the night drew in, and to escape impending midgies and pneumonia, everyone headed back to the comfort and closer proximity of the bar and beers on tap. It was long past the official end of the Elite Event and yet there were still plenty yelpers left standing, enjoying the drinks and cocktail offers for the regular DJ Stirfry set of a Wednesday eve. Kay L's discover of the evening was that 'The Outhouse do one of the best French Martinis she's had in Edinburgh!'

BlogPost9
It was past midnight before the final yelpers merrily strayed, or perhaps stumbled, home. Rounding it all up, Dug W's advice to 'anyone who enjoys a great beer, take a wee wander down Broughton St Lane to The Outhouse. You'll be welcomed by a selection of very tasty drinks of which he would recommend the Innis & Gunn on tap. Whether you choose to partake in tasting a multitude of rums on a school night is up to you...!'

And so, as ever let's raise our Yelp shot glasses once more and toast a huge thank you to Kim and Graeme at The Outhouse, Ed from St. Lucia Distilierries, Drew and Jean-Phillipe from The Manna House, all the guys at Crombie's, Robin the photographer for the fab photies and to each and every yelper who came, saw, drank and partied – despite the weather!

BlogPost10

Edinburgh yelpers brought their own sunshine to the beer garden that night. Hats off to 'em! Read the reviews of the event, keep the banter flowing on Talk, and have a wee peek at all the photies!

Until next time!

Yelp LA's All Starr Rum Cocktail Challenge

The Yelp LA community is definitely suffering from one big rum-over after last night's poolside finale event celebrating Yelp LA's All Starr Mixology team at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

All Starr 1   All Starr 2

The team was comprised of the top 7 Starr African Rum cocktails as voted on by yelpers throughout the month of May during Yelp's All Starr Rum Cocktail Challenge. BLT Steak's Andrew Parish had guests swooning over his STARRberry Mojito (featuring fresh strawberries, smoked agave nectar, and house-made lemon verbena), while E.T. (Eric Tecosky) of Jones Hollywood created quite the stir with his Physical Graffiti (touting canton ginger liquor, agave nectar, and fresh strawberries). Matt Biancaniello of Library Bar fame was busy concocting samples of The African Rose (with fresh mint leaves, house-made rose germanium water, and topped with a saffron-infused St. Germain foam) in between catching glimpses of the robe-wearing Aidan Demarest (The Spare Room) whipping up his Coco-Butter Baby (with hints of pineapple juice and Torani Coconut Syrup, served over crushed ice for Tropicana Bar. Rounding out the group, there was a mean shaking tournament taking place in the corner between La Descarga's Kenny Arbuckle, Eveleigh's David Kupchinsky, and The Edison's Joe Brooke. Kenny's Starr Stealer included Taylor's Velvet Falernum and a house hibiscus liqueur that transported guests to a far away land, David Kupchinsky's Banana Daiquiri suprised everyone with its delicious notes of bananas, housemade lime Cordial, and sprinkle of nutmeg (later renamed "Holler Back Girl" because "this shit is bananas..."), and Joe Brooke's Fuji Starr completed the fruit tree with fresh apple juice, fresh lime juice, and Benedictine.

All Starr 3

All Starr 4

After sampling all of the exquisite Starr African Rum cocktail samples, Yelp Elites and their plus ones feasted on a Mex Beach Buffet, courtesy of Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill. The staff was friendly, speedy, and most importantly, dishing out delicious full plates of their menu's finest. The beautiful Tropicana Bar presented the perfect background to soak it all in, from the beautiful sunset to Hollywood's twinkling night lights, not to mention the slew of celebrity sightings!

All Starr 5

Before the night came to a close, guests had the nerve-racking task of narrowing down their favorites to just one. After the final votes had been counted, Physical Graffiti from Eric Tecosky of Jones Hollywood took home the coveted "Yelper's Choice Award." Everyone was a great sport and each drink deserves a seriously rummy nod. Also, heralded for their participation in the month-long promotion, "Best Name" went to The Gorbals for their Charlize TheRum and The Foundry on Melrose for their MadagaStarr, and The Roger Room was coined "Best Bar." Thanks also to those bars that participated all month long: Bar Lubitsch, Bar Marmont, Church & State, Copa d' Oro, and Lexington Social House.

All Starr 6

As the event winded down, Tropicana Bar's Summer Movie Screening began with a funky mashup of BIG and Notorious B.I.G. hits. It was a memorable Monday evening, for sure. A big shout out to all the staff at Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel for their help in making this event a smashing success!

The Yelp 500 at The Service Center

For 100 years Indy has celebrated race weekend, and finally Indy had what they've been clammoring for -- a Yelp party open to the entire community -- The Yelp 500! Over 500 locals came to the party, which was also the grand opening of Big Car's new project, The Service Center for Contemporary Community + Culture. And, what a spectacle it was.

The White Rabbit Cabaret's Dorgan Muncie was the ever-tasteful emcee, and Albaster Betty & Poppy wowed the crowd with their burlesque bacchanale. Sun King Brewing, which we can go ahead and say it because everyone's thinking it -- the official beer of Indianapolis -- was the official beer of The Yelp 500 and served 500+ plus pints of their Sunlight Cream Ale, Osiris Pale Ale, Wee Mac Scotch Ale, Bitter Druid ESB and Firefly Wheat. To continue the day of firsts, they released their brand new iphone app!

New Day Meadery -- at the top of the heap of unique mountain with the only draft mead in Indiana -- served up their sudsy honey wines. From their special South Cider to the sparkling blueberry honey wine, they weren't clownin' around!

DSC_6727_small DSC_6829_small

Smoking Goose made their international debut at The Yelp 500 -- serving up their kitchen sink sausages. 3 Days in Paris was the hit of the party with their Parisian sweet & savory crepes. Papa Roux slung bacon etoufee and his world famous Po' Boys. Fat Sammies ciao wagon delivered their handheld meatball sammies. Georgetown Market (in their 38th year of being Indy's health food store) served their dessert vegan chocolate cake, while Bjava coffee (our faithful microroaster) did pour overs to perk the crowd up (sheesh... if burlesque wasn't enough, eh?)

To cement the spectacle, The Phoenix Theatre spoofed The Indy 500 with the Zippers of Zoomerville, and Broad Ripple Music Fest presented the live music of Harley Poe. Their punk-gypsy-honky tonk vampire busted the seams of putting them into any genre and made the event an incredible treat. And, Big Car's Joey Molinaro -- violionist supremo -- played an impromptu surprise performance, too!

ESCrossroads and Twisted Frog Photography, and A Man Named Harold snapped photos of yelpers. And, Indy Photo Booths brought their booth to put the memories on film strips, (which you can see here):

The Circle City Derby Girls, and Race City Rebels (men's derby team!) rolled through. The Indycog (bike advocacy non-profit) made a spoked appearance. NUVO's street team gave away concert tickets (you lucky yelpers, you). The spectacle was so amazing that the Million Dollar Road Trip had to stop by with their local-business festooned airstream (which in the end brought together Sun King and White Rabbit Cabaret -- where the former funded and the latter was selected for MDRT's local business grant!).

Speaking of scratch... yelpers raised $1,300 for Big Car's Service Center! Speaking of which... we can't leave without showing you the work of Big Car's Kamilah Gill:

June Tasting At The Camden Kitchen

Posted by Annie

What better way to extend a bank holiday weekend then by having an Elite event at Camden Kitchen on a Tuesday evening? There is no better way unless you invent a time machine but I digress. Hidden away from the busy Dublin streets is this bistro that forces you to relax and then gets you excited again by it's culinary delights.

Pic1

Magali, the manager, explained to us that their mission is to give their customers great locally sourced food at affordable prices. Their early bird is 2 courses for €18 which ain't too shabby! As we all relaxed upstairs and got to know old faces and catch up with new faces a steady flow of bites came our way. Such as...

Pic 2

Homemade chicken liver parfait with nectarine chutney, country style pork & cornichon terrine, arancini with Wicklow blue cheese and citrus cured salmon with langoustine mayonnaise. Are you hungry yet? Take a breather because there is more! Confit duck with celeriac puree & apple  with was served on a spoon and no one had difficulty getting their mouth around it. Goats cheese croquette, black olive puree Bayonne ham croutons and last but not least fresh pea & truffle risotto.

Pic 3

All this was washed down with some delicious French wines that Alan from www.frenchwines.ie taught us about. They were Domaine Saint Amant, Las Clapas, 2008, Rhone Valley and Domaine Michaud, Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, 2010, Loire Valley. They thoughtfully paired the wines to the bites that we salivated over!

Pic4

A glorious evening with friends on a sunny June in Dublin was had. Thank you so much to Magali for helping plan the event and for all the Camden Kitchen team for going to such efforts with the food that they presented to us Yelpers. Thank you also to Alan for sharing his French Wine knowledge. Thank you for coming out to give Yelp your time! You can gossip about the night here. Review the event here. And most importantly look at yourself in the photos here and drool over the food once more too!

Till next month, all my best!

Yelp Elites Tie The Knot At Yelp's Big Fat Italian Wedding!

Posted by Don Bourassa

JerseySM Portland's Yelp Elite said "I do!" and "What you gonna do 'bout it?" to Yelp's Big Fat Italian Wedding at Amalfi's! On Monday, 6/6 at 6pm, over 200 Yelpers tied the knot with an incredible buffet of down-home Italian food, frosty Oregon beer, fantastic Oregon wine, and a live band. With spring in full swing and love in the air, Portland's finest got decked out in their classiest (or "kla$$iest") Italian/Jersey wear for Yelp's Big Fat Italian Wedding at Amalfi's! This family-owned (3rd generation) spot sitting up in Beaumont really knows how to throw a party!

GroupSM Upon entering Yelpers were greeted with a warm, inviting atmosphere and a live, 3-piece band! The bar (stocked with plenty of bartenders) offered up ice cold Spring Reign from Ninkasi (in 12 oz bottles!) as well as three fantastic wines from A to Z Wineworks (by Rex HIll): The 2008 Chardonnay, the 2009 Pinot Noir, and the 2009 Riesling (in a silkscreened bottle!). With wine and beer in hand, the fast-growing crowd mixed and mingled to the tunes of the band.

BandSM Then came the food. And boy did it come. A full family-style Italian buffet featuring caramelized pear, candied walnut & gorgonzola salad; a classic Caesar; antipasti platter with bleu cheese and meats; house-made zesty meatballs; lasagna classico; creamy pesto penne (a hit of the night); cabernet marinara with penne; fettuccine alfredo; a classic spaghetti with meat sauce; and of course a huge basket full of focaccia. And the food kept on coming - dish after dish. It was incredible. The only thing wider than the plates were the eyes of the elites!

FoodSM Yelpers loaded their plates from the buffet and fanned out across the restaurant, finding spots to sit and chat at booths and tables, as the incredibly attentive wait-staff came around refilling wine, clearing tables, and generally treating everyone not only like honored guests, but like family. Needless to say, the Yelp Elites were more than impressed.

After a couple of hours of mingling it was time to say goodbye - but not before scoring a 2011 Elite Gift - the Time to Yelp watch, as well as a copy of the most recent Chinook Book and… get this - take-home food! Yes, there was so much food that Amalfi's passed out to-go containers for Yelpers to take home some food. This has to be a first for a Yelp Elite Event. And the Yelp Elite loved every second of it.

DonMattTylerSM A huge thanks go out to the folks without whom this would not have been possible: Kiauna Floyd and Jennica from Amalfi's, for throwing an incredible shindig; the Amalfi's staff for bringing your A-game; Ninkasi Brewing and Morgan Miller for the always delicious Spring Reign; Mike and Deb from A to Z Wineworks and Rex Hill for the fantastic Oregon wines; the band; and Matt D and Hilary B for all of the help during the event. Oh, and who can forget the Yelp Elites - without you, this wouldn't be possible.

But don't just take my word for it, check out the reviews and the photos!

Until next time,
SYOY!

With Yelp Kicks Butt happening throughout the month of June here in San Francisco, what better way to ring in the fitness festivities than with a nifty little hang at one of our 20 participating active life locations, Circus Center San Francisco! Our Yelp Kicks Butt Launch Party at Circus Center went down this past Saturday, and Yelpers tapped into their inner circus freak while trying their hand at juggling, scaling ropes and ribbons, hula-hooping, trampoline jumping, and many other fun and impressive activities.

Collage 1

In between trying our hands at wacky circus shenanigans, we also had the fortune of watching riveting high flying acts from some of the pros at Circus Center, all while carbo-loading on Dash Cafe's delectable caramelized waffles and healthy VEEV Acai spirit drinks paired with oh-so-good-for-you Honest Tea. Drinking alcohol has never felt so healthy!

We could wax poetic all day, but as "they" say, pictures are worth 1,000 words. Click here for a few snapshots of the swanky soiree, and to read all of the glowing reviews, guide your mouse here. And of course, don't forget that Yelp Kicks Butt is happening throughout the month of June with 50% off all sorts of ways to snub the chubb... including a super fun circus boot camp at Circus Center!

Yelp Toronto's Magic 8 Ball at Hotel Ocho

Posted by Vivek S

On Wednesday June 1st, over three hundred yelpers assembled at Queen St W and Spadina Ave to make Yelp history: Toronto's first party open to the entire Yelp community! With a simple click on the Yelp Events page, newbies and Yelp Elites alike got a ticket to Yelp's Magic 8 Ball in the fabulous and brand-spanking new Hotel Ocho.

Openparty01

Elites and VIPS arrived early to get the ball rolling with some complimentary cocktailing. Bourbonisto (is that a word?) extraordinaire Matt Jones regaled the crowd with an intimate Maker's Mark tasting. Payam Z not only thought it was educational, he might "send a personal thank you to the fine people of Maker's Mark." How polite!

Openparty02

Maker's was key to two of the night's seven signature drinks: the Chinatown Julep and Old Fashioned Streetcar. And the cocktails didn't stop there. Hot on everyone's lips were Bacon Vodka Caesars made with Mott's Clamato. What could be more Canadian! Those red hot bevvies took Patrick M way back: "it reminds me of my shameful childhood of snacking on synthetic bacon bits and sneaking vodka from the liquor cabinet." You're not alone, dude.

Openparty03

Did some say MOAR COCKTAILS? Brian K couldn't help but notice that "there were there some hot bartenders" at Ocho and they were mixing and muddling faster than you can say "Review of the Day." Russian Standard starred in Eight is Enough, which refrshed Anne B. "I've never had basil in a drink before, but now I think I'm hooked!" Hornitos Tequila anchored the very sassy Ocho You Didn't, and yelpers also got to try Hotel Ocho's signature cocktail —invented within their very walls: the Halfway to Christmas. It's Red Stag and Jim Beam with a cherry on top. That double-barreled potable will make anyone feel festive!

For yelpers that preferred their drinks unmixed, Amsterdam Beer rolled out their refreshing Oranje Weisse Bier, and Elaine K found her "new summer blackout beverage" in Palm Bay Spritz coolers. And for those already seeing octuple, VitaminWater was handy to keep guests healthful and hydrated.

Of course, yelpers need some substance to settle those booze-filled bellies. Ocho served up coconut shrimp, mini quiches, spring rolls and other delights served piping hot from their kitchen. For those in search of savoury snackage, the girls serving PopChips on platters was the answer. For Yvonne T the evening's highlight was the macarons provided by Butter Avenue, who previewed their sinfully sweet sensations for the Yelp crowd. "I can't wait until they open up for business!"

Openparty04

Putting the magic in Magic 8 Ball (literally) was Phil the Magic Guy. "Did you guys see the magician?" Steph L was entranced by Phil's legerdemain. For the arty amongst us: "the interactive canvas by PaintLounge was a fun and novel idea." Nisha S's "creative hands were itching to claim quite a few of the circles" on the board. And while Nicole H found "there was no shortage of fun stuff to do" her fave had to be the Snapz Photobooth. "I want one of these at every party I go to now, Yelp event or no!" And Ocho's rocking two-piece house band, Falcon, played a mélange of "I-can't-believe-they-just-played-that" tunes into the dark hours of the evening.

Openparty05

A very special thanks to all of our sponsors and volunteers as well as Paul Hillier Photography, Captain Printworks and the entire staff of Hotel Ocho: Amanda, Angelo, Chris, Collette, Esther, Jamal, owners Louise and Hamish and General Manager, Kenneth. You guys were more than on the ball, you rocked it!

Openparty06

And of course, much gratitude to the Toronto Yelp community for making our first open party truly memorable. Event pics are on the Yelp Flickr and photobooth pics are here. Stay tuned for more Yelp events happening this summer! See you then!

Sactown Parties Like It's 2012!

Posted by Alex L

Sure, we survived the Rapture, but the next doomsday scenario is just around the corner: December 21, 2012, or the date the Mayan Long Count calendar supposedly predicts the world will end! To celebrate their last year on earth and go out with a bang, Sactown Elites gathered on Tuesday, May 31 at the swank new Tequila Museo Mayahuel.
Picnik collageHeld in the restaurant's classy and candlelit Coa room, the apocalyptic ambiance was only enhanced by a Mayanesque video projection from Visaomedia, coconuts filled with dried corn and candles, plenty of Yelp goodies, authentic Mayan artwork on loan from Spanglish Arte, and a beautiful wall-sized paper, charcoal and paint rendering of the great Mayan pyramid Chichen Itza by local artist Lorena Moreno.
Picnik collage4Of course you can't party like it's 2012 without great food and drinks. Waiters handed out bite-sized authentic Mexican morsels and bartenders served up spicy watermelon and smoked jalapeño margaritas filled with Don Pilar tequila. As an added bonus, the legendary Don Pilar himself was there to hand out samples of his tasty creation!
Picnik collage2
The undisputed highlight of the event was a performance by the Maquilli Tonatiuh Aztec Dancers, who performed a blessing ceremony and danced along to thundering drums. No sacrifices were needed, as yours truly was blessed with smoke and gave thanks to the four directions! All this and more was captured in stunning shots from photographer Melissa Uroff Millner.
Picnik collage3 If that wasn't enough, Elites left with the brand spankin' new Yelp watches so they could count down to the end of days! Suddenly, the end of the world didn't seem so bad.

Apocalyptically yours,

Kansas City Elites PLEY With Their Food!

Posted by Joi

On Tuesday night, the Culinary Center of Kansas City opened their doors (and kitchen!) to a select number of Elites, making this our most exclusive event of the year so far!

Photo by Daniel Hu  Photo by Chloe Mann Pley45

The Culinary Center features cooking classes, special events and meals cooked by a talented group of chefs, so we knew we in store for some delectable edibles! We enjoyed beer braised brisket on fresh baked focaccia, grilled veggies, creamy artichoke bacon spinach dip and for dessert, liquor-infused truffles. Did tipsy truffle-shuffles ensue? You had to be there!

After making our own masterpieces at the interactive crostini bar (featuring fresh vegetables, goat cheese and a variety of fresh herbs), Chef Matt Chatfield gave us a presentation and we got to take home the recipes of all the food we savored.

Pley11 Photo by Chloe Mann Photo by Chloe Mann

For a "final course," we enjoyed our own interactive meal plan game with scary diet recipe cards from the 1970s! Fluffy Mackerel Pudding, anyone? Alicia R, you put it so well: I greatly enjoyed getting to know some new folks while making a "meal" with my fish stir-fry and my fellow guests' surprise chowder, frankfurter pie, and slimming dessert beverage (made of beef bullion and water)--yum! Ah, a true foodie can find the potential in anything, right?

  Pley23 Pley25 Pley28

Those who gave in a donation for Joplin relief received one of these gorgeous aprons made just for this event. We were able to raise $325 for Convoy of Hope and contributed many non perishables for the Culinary Center's food drive.

Thank you to Maria, Connie, Chef Matt and the entire staff at the Culinary Center of Kansas City!

Havana Nights at La Descarga LA Elite Event

Last night the LA Elite Squad closed out Yelp's All Starr Rum Cocktail Challenge with a cool, (mostly) white linen Havana Nights event at La Descarga.

Descaraga 1

The hot-to-trot guests lined up along an inconspicuous part of Western Avenue causing a frenzy of passersby in a seedy Hollywood 'hood to look on with suspicion and intrigue. And while waiting to be taken through the secret entrance to this Cuban-inspired speakeasy, they feasted upon mobile Cuban munchies thanks to No Jodas! Cuban Kitchen truck. A meal of rice, black beans, chicken (or beef) and plantains resulted in an onslaught of drooling and seconds.

Descarga 3

Once they entered into La Descarga's mysterious entryway, Elites and their plus ones were engulfed in a dark, sexy Cuban lair. The intimate space paved the way for close encounters, drink sharing, and a little dance floor action once the live conga band started to strum from the interior balcony. Starr Stealers (featuring a homemade hibiscus liqueur) and Starr Daiquiris were being shaken with force from the talented and attractive staff and dished out with sheer speed.

Descarga 2

Meanwhile, the cigar bar was taken over by representatives from Starr Rum who offered the crowd a little background on the African treat that has a strong note of cherry, while serving it up neat (combine it with a Coke and indulge in a little cherry beverage action). And then things got wild.

A fiery burlesque dancer appeared and regaled the linen-ed, fedora-ed group with a hot, hot performance. She shook her hips, kicked her legs, and all jaws dropped as she contortioned her body this way and that, all while keeping a flaming stick lit. She was sensational to say the very least.

Descarga 4

Luckily for us, Ellen Choi Photography captured the essence of the evening beautifully, so be sure to see her work right here. Read the reviews for even more tantalizing details!

Yelp Milwaukee's Ping Pong Madness!

Posted by Rachel Fell

Rally, set... point!

This past Thursday, May 26, Yelp elites in the four-one-four rocked Yelp's Ping Pong Madness! at SPiN in the Third Ward. Curious as to what this "madness" actually entailed? Think singles and doubles tournaments, an inspirational and oh-so-cheesy playlist, photobooth antics, adult root beer floats and SPiN's signature tap beer, innovative and delicious bites, plenty of sweatbands, cheers of victory and roars of defeat... do we really need to go on?

Bites: SPiN's interesting menu meant, for us, an assortment of sliders and sandwiches from fried chicken on homemade biscuits to brisket sliders and reubens, brown sugar sweet potato chips and chocolate covered strawberries, and a huge charcuterie plate complete with a killer cheese log. Cheese log = awesome!

IMG_0268  IMG_0273

Hand-eye coordination a la Forrest Gump, and you win! Great prizes for tourney winners including Roaring Dan's Rum from Great Lakes Distillery, a Wisconsin-tastic gift bag from West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe, Nessun Dorma and Highland House gift certificates, Lakefront Brewery passes, BAAM at Turner Hall passes, and more!

Shutterbox Milwaukee was again on hand for this event, and their stellar photobooth photos are always  a crowd pleaser. Antics mean giggles, and giggles mean fun! (And who doesn't like fun?)

The MKE elite squad sure does bring their A-game to the table! For real, this event was a blast, seriously. Ping pong + booze/great food + photobooth + prizes = fun times a hundred! I'm loving every minute of this crazy Yelp ride, and getting to plan events for MKE's stellar elite squad is the icing on the cake for me as CM here. Looking forward to so much more Yelp-tastic goodness here in "the good land!"

Cheers!
