Yelp Elites Fall in Love...with autumn!

Posted by Monica

Last night, amid Supper's appropriately autumnal hues, Yelp elites celebrated the departure of summer and the arrival of fall at Yelp's Urban Harvest. Swooon! Garbed in the season's finest threads (flannels and plaids and scarves, oh my!), elites nibbled on crab cakes and spinach frittatas whilst imbibing spicy autumn cocktails.

Yelpers couldn't get enough of the apple cider hot toddies spiked with Sauza Hornitos Anejo tequila or the cayenne/cinnamon Urban Harvest margaritas. When it was time to move onto beer, local brewer Victory, provided three different suds: Festbier, Whirlwind Witbier, and the ever famous, 9% Golden Monkey!

The intimate setting in Supper's upstairs private room was enough to get all the elites and their +1s talking. "It's such a great place that it is impossible to not fall in love right away and Mitch the owner is wonderful!" Susan G isn't lying either. Mitch acted as a gracious host, often found bouncing in and out of conversations with all the laughing elites. He was either that funny or the drinks were that good.

Elites began to notice the side-effects of alcohol when Susan G and Blake F jumped into a breakdance battle, while MaryAnn Z and Kate S gave Brad P their best shot.

Scope out more of the photos of the event taken by our very favorite yelper photog, Ferry, and read what party-goers are saying!

Until Next Time...

¡Salud! and SYOY!

Yelp's Stirring Things Up at Public Bar!

Posted by Tara Lewis

Shaking, stirring, mixing and mingling has never felt so good...especially after eight rounds of original recipe cocktails! Last night at Public Bar, round two of the three part cocktail competition served up some fun for the DC Elite squad. The dedicated drove of drinkers were seeing double this round with almost twice as many cocktails to sample and judge, so competition was stiff - just like the drinks!

Cocktail concoctions galore were poured fast and furiously, with gorgeous garnishes and accents. With original, creative drink names from The Autumn Bicycle Ride to the infamous and notorious Middle Finger, the mix of flavors tickled and tested every taste bud. So many drinks, so little time! Good thing DC Yelp Elite are professional ... drinkers?

In moments of rest and recovery, the crowd feverishly devoured tasty cheeseburger sliders, kickin' quesadillas and wicked wings provided by Public Bar.

This round Graham C, one of our newest "Beantown" additions to the DC Elite squad repped as the official Elite judge on the voting panel. Hailing from the Bay Area, Ani P was also in the house at her first DC Elite event. Derryk A was spotted double fisting quesadillas (yea-we saw you) and Jake K apparently grew a few additional hands after sampling his favorite cocktail during the last round - it was that good.

Be sure to check out more photos of the event taken by our very own Elite squad member, the lovely Alicia G.

Until next time...

Cheers and SYOY!

Yelp LA's Coffee Experience at LAMILL

Posted by Dawson S

Focused on the bronzed bean and perfect leaf, an intimate group of Yelp's LA Elites spent an unseasonably warm afternoon this first weekend of fall touring, learning about and tasting some of the world's finest coffees and teas with LAMILL's family of coffee savants at their private facility in Alhambra.

Lamill collage 2

From cupping coffee and tea to viewing the roasting process, and learning all about packing a proper espresso to the fine art of foam, it was a grown-up field trip for everyone aboard. After the afternoon of erudition, (did you know that coffee is a fruit?), yelpers imbibed tea infused champagne cocktails along with LAMILL's signature Black & Black (you guessed it, their Kenya AA Thangathi and Guinness), alongside Michael Cimarusti's sliders, mini-grilled cheese sandwiches, and fresh fried shoestring Kennebecs.

Lamill collage 1

Before wrapping up, everyone was treated to gift bags of fine coffee and tea and a few lucky yelpers held winning raffle tickets for limited edition roasts. One ecstatic Elite scored herself a Japanese Hario iced coffee maker courtesy of LAMILL CEO, Craig Min, while others took advantage of frame worthy burlap coffee sacks from source family farms. The warmth and passion of the experts leading the behind the scenes glimpse into the boutique coffee world left us all buzzing on more than just a caffeine high. As Sukhraj B put it, “As good as it gets just doesn't describe how good it was. I've been trying to find the perfect word but I'll settle on wow."

For more great photos taken by Yelp's own shutterbug, Roo M, check out our Flickr pool, or, leaf through some of the first-hand experiences in reviews. Better yet, hustle down to the LAMILL Coffee Boutique for a latté of your own!

Until next time...

Phoenix Yelp Goes Black & White!

Thursday evening, September 24th, Phoenix Yelpers gathered downtown at Switch for a Black and White themed affair... Rockin' everything black and white from sports jerseys to sport jackets, boas, wigs, hats, make-up, and more; this crew went all out and managed to have a delightful time.  A variety of beverages from beer and wine to drunken Italian sodas were matched with quite a spread of appetizers making this party a huge success.  Favorite bites included the meatloaf, caprese sandwiches, hummus, lobster / crab puffs, and pecan treats.

Switch and sister restaurant Fez provided generous raffle prizes including bottles of wine, vodka, gift cards, black and white cookies, and even a zebra stuffed animal that Georgeann G scored as a souvenir of the evening.  In addition, Yelp lunch boxes were a bonus for all who attended!

Boston Elites Say 'So Long' to Summer at Scampo!

On Tuesday, September 22, Yelp Boston Elites gathered together on the fabulous patio of Scampo in The Liberty Hotel to wave goodbye to the Summer we never had! Although we'd be lying if we said we were ready for Fall, you'd never know we were sad to see the warm weather go, 'cause Elites mingled, munched and mmm mmm mmm'd over the cuisine, cocktails and company throughout this wonderful evening.

Yelp_Scampo-1 Yelp_Scampo-17 Yelp_Scampo-80

Greeted by what can only be called some of the friendliest, most hospitable staff in all of Boston, the night began at the bar, with Ultimat Vodka cocktails of choice, bottles of Heineken and Heinken Light, glasses of Merlot, Cabernet and Albarino, and Scampo's signature Fall cocktail. Mounds of delicious dips including Taran, Fava Bean and Eggplant were consumed post-haste as the hors d'œuvres began making their way out of the kitchen. The menu included Julia's (yes, that's Child) Roka Tart with Concord Grapes, Bufala Ricotta Ravioli, Sugar Cane Chicken Thighs, Chanterelle Pizza, Chestnut Soup, Naan with Prosciutto and Mozzarella, Petite Mozzarella Salad and Mini Lobster Popovers. Clearly, the food and drinks were the star of the night's festivities.

Throughout the evening, you could catch glimpses of Chef Lydia Shire handing pizzas to salivating Elites, merrily chatting them up on the subject of chicken thighs, asking if they'd tried the Lobster Popovers, which were utterly, intoxicatingly amazing, if case you were curious! We welcomed Elite event first-timers Jamie K, Traci K and John A, who snagged a plus one from Nik B!

Though we'll soon be suiting up in scarves, hats and mittens, this was one gastronomically great way to celerbate the change in season: a casual night of happy bellies, good friends and service fit for kings and queens! For making this night happen, a big shout-out to the lovely ladies at The Moxie Agency, the management and staff of Scampo, including Richard, Gina & Cara! And for tantalizing our tummies and making us feel right at home, special thanks to Chef Lydia Shire!

Be sure to check out all of the mouth-watering photos, snapped by our very own Tatsu I and add your own two cents about the event with a review here! Check out the delicious creations and updated seasonal menus at Scampo often, including brunch, and always, always, always pop onto the Elite Calendar for more exciting Yelp Boston bashes!

Till next time, Boston...which is The Passport to Kendall Square on October 14. Keep your eyes peeled for the invitation!

I'm On A Boat @ The USS Midway Museum

Posted by Danny Wurst

In this San Diego event Yelp Elites said, "Bleep land, were on a boat mutha Bleeper!" Thursday evening on the beautiful USS Midway Museum; yelpers sported tuxes, shades, swim trunks, and flippy floppys representing the Lonely Island music video—"I'm On A Boat."

The amazing spread and brilliant presentation of food provided by Behind the Scenes Catering highlighted the evening. From finger foods to desserts there was no shortage of tasty treats. Yelpers also quenched a seaman’s thirst with Sailor Jerry cocktails and Airdale Brewing Co. suds.

DJ Edgartronic kept the party hoppin with tunes and gear provided by Raphael’s Party Rentals, while LivebattleUSA showed yelpers the wave of the future of laser tag

The evening concluded with gift bags taken ashore filled with donations from The San Diego Symphony, Event Beverage Solutions, The Fantail Café, and Sailor Jerry Rum.  Check out the pictures to this epic event which were provided by San Diego Photo Factory. You can also read the reviews or add to the talk threads if you missed the boat.

Yelp's Stirring Things Up at Policy!

Posted by Tara Lewis

Last night, DC Elites stirred things up at Policy - the first event of a three part cocktail competition series.  Among the graffiti-painted, chandelier-adorned venue, five bartenders shook and stirred their little tails off to a panel of judges and Yelp Elite as they competed in the DeKuyper MixMasters Challenge.

The crowd chowed down on gourmet BLT sandwiches as they listened and watched each bartender mix their cocktail and explain how they came up with their original recipes. Samples of each tasty cocktail were then passed around to all of the thirsty attendees and judged based on taste, appearance, creative of name, simplicity and originality. At the end of the night, three winners prevailed and two moved on to the next round of competition.

$500 Winners - Voted on by the panel of judges

Isabelle Ardelean - Southern "Rita"

$100 People's Choice Winner

The crowd was kept spirited thanks to the energy and tunes by the fantastic MC and DJ, Brian Anderson from Last Call Entertainment

Special shout outs to Cat B, our very own Elite celebrity judge for the evening. How did the newbie hazing go, Kendall W and Judith L? It was great to see Jeremy L in the house - you are a "solja" and everyone is happy to know you are doing better! Also, thanks to Keon D's hot feet for keeping us impressed and entertained. Fenny L - it was all of your fault.

East Bay's Space Odyssey 2009!

Posted by Ligaya T

Yesterday evening yelpers from all around the Bay gathered in the hills of Oakland for East Bay's inaugural open party to explore the mysteries of the universe at Chabot Space & Science Center! This event included not only Elites, but the entire extended Yelp community.

Lip-smacking good refreshments and nibbles abound, guests wandered through three floors of interactive exhibits, simulations and learnings while grooving to the beats of fflood, Vagabond and Demodulate. With stunning panoramas as a backdrop, guests peered into three enormous telescopes at newly discovered asteroids and Jupiter and three of its moons.

There were out of this world eats around every corner: Edible Explorations served up incredible molé and salsas while Miraku wowed with a spectacular array of sushi. Otaez was a pescatarian dream with loads of scrumptious fresh, chunky ceviche, and The Sage Table offered a taste of Indian chutney. The other end of the taste spectrum was satisfied by delectable cupcakes from Sweetface Bakery, brownies and cookies courtesty of A Sweet Affair, and Gelateria Naia with a rainbow of gelato including the ever-popular whiskey flavor!

Miracle Fruit USA made a distinct impression on many a palate with their special berries too; yelpers were seen taking shots of straight vinegar! Now that's certainly not all their was to drink, when it came to beverages the choices were plentiful! For the beer lovers, Dogfish Head, Drake's and Humboldt offered refreshing cold brews, while Bear Flag Wines and ginger mimosas from Domaine de Canton pleased the oenophiles. The line was likely the longest for Partida though! We all know how much yelpers enjoy their tequila.

Considering it was a Sunday evening, the non-alky bevergages were just as popular though, and folks enjoyed Honest Tea and effervescent hibiscus drink, Ooba. Berkeley café, Local 123, also dripped fresh Flying Goat coffee for all! And it doesn't stop there: Think Escape's fantasy shuttle stocked with refreshments kept the party going from the subway station to Chabot and back!

Three cheers to all our guests and sponsors for supporting this marvelous organization that continues to make important contributions to the field of astronomy and provides a unique learning ground for the curious of any age! Chabot is now hosting nightlife events that include telescope viewings, planetarium showings and live music. Check out their last party under the stars of the year!

Want a peek of the festivities? The costumes should not be missed! Head to Yelp's Flickr page for photobooth shots by PhotoWorks Interactive and pix by CDMFoto and see more from Will A's perspective. Read the reviews of the event too! As you can see, it was truly a stellar evening.

Hope you'll join us next time...

Toronto Yelpers Get Laide @ Laide Lounge!

Posted by Kat F.
This past Tuesday night yelpers from across Toronto raised their sugary sweet martini glasses to officially say goodbye to summer at the sexy and seductive Laide Lounge, just east of the downtown core!

On hand was an ample supply of Laide’s signature cocktail, the marvelous Pink Glove Martini – an alluring combination of Sour Puss raspberry liqueur, orange vodka and lime juice. In between sips of sweetness poured by Laide owner Racquel and her trusty staff Traci & Tizz, yelpers snacked on meaty munchies like chicken skewers, mini pizza bites and seasoned meatballs.

The mercury was definitely on the rise inside Laide, and we couldn’t tell if the sexy vintage erotica on the big screen or the 60+ yelpers busily mingling that were to blame, but no matter – Yelp fans were on hand and they were put to good use throughout the night to help cool down.

Photo opps abounded at the entryway, where life-sized human casts of naked bodies greeted yelpers like Carmen M (ahem, no relation to Kate M!)

Check out the first reviews and photos of the event captured by Jeff Jewiss if you’re eager to relive the evening (or if you just wish you were there!).

Yelp LA's Sweet September Party

Posted by Dawson S

What do you get when you mix LA yelpers with more than 1500 pieces of Belgian chocolate, jumbo cupcakes, homemade Ding Dongs, cake truffles, cookies, brownies and more? Yelp LA's Sweet September party!

Last weekend we brought yelpers' dreams to life with a grown-up dessert playground courtesy of Essential Chocolate Desserts and Kitchen 12000 at the LA Meeting & Event Center. Think you're too old to spend an afternoon going wild in a candy shop? Well, think again...

Stepping inside, special Yelp Security set the stage and since a yelper can't live on sweetmeats alone, there were plenty of other treats, like tricks from the Magic Castle's Marc Bachrach and palm readings with Spencer. DJ Armando set the mood along with the floral stylings of Floral Fields while we were spoiled rotten with savory bites from Kitchen12000 served by psychedelic candyland servers, washing it all down with candy laden vodka concoctions like Red Vine Lemonade, and, what no sweet tooth could be without, a Milk Bar

Sweet sept collage 2

Before calling it a day, Elites grabbed their Yelp lunchboxes and goody bags and a few lucky revelers went home with raffle prizes from the Pure Delish Candy Shoppe, a cookie basket from Sabrina's Sweetery, eyebrow shaping from Queen Bee Waxing, and a night at the historic Culver Hotel, snagged by new Elite, Pat K.

Have we sugared your sweet tooth? Check out all of the amazing photos taken by Pamela Masters and Yelp LA's Amy K. Craving more? Peruse reviews of this decadent afternoon.

Metro Detroit Yelpers put the "art" back in Party!

Posted by Mariah C

Last night, Metro Detroit Elite Squad yelpers and friends gathered at the Scarab Club - the historic artists' club nestled in amidst the cultural distract of Midtown Detroit.  With a fascinating variety of metalwork in the club's main gallery, tunes by DJ Forest J, and delectable treats from the Caucus Club, the stage was set for an artful evening at a true Detroit gem.

Guests were seduced by the ideal weather, and drawn outdoors into the Scarab Club's picture perfect garden, where they sampled gazpacho, inside-out deviled eggs, salad on pita, and mini-burgers as they sipped mimosas and welcomed new faces to the Elite Squad!

The Scarab Club's Treena E led yelpers on a tour through the building -- and the many stories -- of the club, wrapping up on the top floor with a peek into one of the private artist studios. Yelpers then returned to the courtyard garden for art and fashion related give-aways and the waning light of sunset.

Check out the first reviews and photos of the event to relive the evening (or if you just wish you were there)!

New York Elites Get Blessed at MEGU!

Last night certainly put the "elite" in Yelp Elite when a hundred of Manhattan's finest descended on the swanky Kimono Bar at MEGU in Tribeca. Greeted at the door by trays of Takara Sake, Lucy L couldn't kick her addiction to the clear cool stuff and may have consumed "more than half bottle of sake" throughout the evenings festivities. Get that girl some water! The bartenders, Erik and Jacqueline, kept drinks a-flowing from behind the bar for yelpers like Sisi Z and a resilient Roderick A who preferred to quench their thirst with the Double Cross Vodka Geisha Punch that Rod described as: "sweet and strong and delicious. Like Craig."

And that's just the drinks! When it comes to gourmet cuisine, MEGU is the master of fine Japanese dining and they certainly didn't hold back with sushi and appetizers galore. Salted edamame blossomed from side tables while the sushi bar was stocked with spicy tuna, eel avocado rolls, dungeoness crab rolls and  endless amounts of nigiri topped with hand-shaved wasabi. The flawless staff, Malik and Colin passed gorgeous trays of Crispy Okaki Asparagus, Kobe Beef Croquettes, Tuna Tartare, and Kanzuri Shrimp--a selection that turned our Yelp Elites into human piranhas at ten minute intervals. As Abigail M says: "Holy kobe beef balls! This was the best food I've ever had at a Yelp event." Amen, sister!

The plentiful cocktails, sakes and satiating eats kept all the yelpers in good spirits as they tore through the brand new Elite gifts: The Yelp Lunch Box! Each Elite at the party received their new gift and we'll try to get the rest out at the upcoming NYC Elite Events

HUGE thanks to MEGU for hosting such a top-notch event, I'm sure we'll all be returning for the Weekly Recession Specials very soon! Check out the reviews, photos and talk thread for more of the fun stuff!

Denver Yelp Elites Laugh it Up With A Night of Improv Comedy

Posted by Laura Levaas
We laughed, we cried. But, we only cried because we were laughing so hard. Denver Yelpers sent Tiffany C. off to L.A. and welcomed me on board in unique style at the Bovine Metropolis Theater Tuesday night.

Elites sipped on Macollo Rum (some in mojitos, some in shooters) and Twisted Pine brews, they noshed on a huge variety of sandwiches from Cheba Hut, and also became part of the improv acting from the theater itself. We all enjoyed skits using Yelp Libs napkins and yelpy lingo, and somehow Tiffany and I ended up in a harmony of songs displaying emotions -- "Horny" Tiffany and "Stoner" Laura put on quite a show.

Photographer and yelper Demetrius A snapped the night away! Several people walked away with tickets to the upcoming Roller Derby Bout courtesy of the Denver Roller Dolls, and some yelpers won copies of Beer Wars.

We wrapped the up the night with a variety of sweet treats from Cheba Hut, including a rice crispy-like treat made from Cap'n Crunch Berries. Yes, it was as delicious as it sounds!

Check out the pictures of the event captured by Photography by Demetrius and don't forget to read the reviews if you missed out.

Houston Is Sweet On Yelp!

Posted by Farrah Akhtar

What a sweet Sunday in September it was! More than 100 awesome H-town Elites made it out to CRAVE Cupcakes for their legendary cupcakes and bit of bubbly! This sugar-filled event attracted new and old Elites alike, as they noshed on more than 300 Yelp-famous cupcakes with flavors, like the ever-popular red velvet, chocolate on vanilla, coconut and pumpkin. (Fujio W and Alex R, were spotted consuming more than five of these delectable delights!) And all were adorned with a Yelp sugar topping.

It was a bitter sweet evening, as we said a farewell to Anthony H before his trek back to the UK. (We did, however, get to witness the tasting of his first cupcake ever. Yes, first cupcake ever!). The night continued on with rump shakin' beats from DJ Eddie Spettro and a drawing for a pair of tickets to The Wine Conference, which Morgan C ended up snagging!

With childlike excitement over sweets, treats and musical beats, the Sqaud's went wild over the new 2009 YES schwag: old skool metal lunch boxes, thermos and all! Check out pictures of the evening, along with raving reviews. The Squad was thrilled to have a chill Sunday evening event, and despite the 50-percent chance of rain showers, our prayers were answered and it was nothing but clear skies. Hallelujah!
