Yelp Phoenix Enjoys La Dolce Vita!

Phoenix Elites and guests got a taste of the sweet life this past Sunday evening at La Bocca Urban Pizzeria & Wine Bar in Tempe. With excellent service, a fine selection of pizzas and bruschettas, flowing wine, music, conversation, and biscotti to-go, yelpers appreciated the VIP treatment and had a blast! Donald S describes the event as "delightful, convivial, tasty, chic, warm, comfortable, friendly, happy, sweet, savory, tasteful, creative, beautiful, conversational, stylish and ...Yelptastic! In short, the best Sunday evening you could ask for!" And Julie P has a similar opinion: "The coolness of the space and the energy of the yelpers seemed to marry as perfectly as some of those toppings on the bruschetta."

For more juicy details on La Dolce Vita OYE, read the reviews, visit the talk thread, and don't miss the photos taken by Gary Millard of four white walls photography.  Thanks again to Julian, Dan, and the entire staff at La Bocca for taking such great care of us!

Until next time,

Cheers and SYOY!

YELP MSP Gets Hoppy at Summit

Posted by Sarah Peterson

The Twin Cities Elite Squad certainly got hoppy at Summit Brewery in St. Paul! About 90 Yelpers and their guests spent two hours giddily imbibing on Summit’s extensive variety of craft beers, touring the brewery courtesy of Carey, and nibbling on a variety of Pizza Luce’s unique and gourmet pizza served up by Luce spokesman, Remee.

New friends were made, and many were finally able to put a real-life face to the profile pics they’ve been communicating with for so long. Lindsay C and Jennifer S’s guest Dave D didn’t go home empty handed as the winners of the six-packs of the newly-released Horizon Red Ale, which was graciously donated by Summit.

Jackie G’s guest Jon K went above and beyond the call of duty by jumping Remee’s car. Thankfully that was the only glitch of the evening!

Thanks to all who came out this Elite event. Another on is in the works for May, so be sure to watch for your invite!

SYOY,
Sarah P

Portland Elites Indulge In Some Gilty Pleasures

Posted by Don Bourassa

Portland's Yelp Elite took a trip to the swank side on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, when they were invited down to the Gilt Club in Old Town Portland to indulge in some Gilty Pleasures! Yeah, that's right! Those Portland Elites sure do clean up nice. Chloë W and her crew got all swanked out in their choicest gear to sip on craft cocktails made with locally distilled New Deal and Portland 88 Vodka, local wines by Andrew Rich, and an assortment of local micro brews.

 Party1  BeenYelped

The Gilt Club brought their A-game, from the red carpet and velvet rope out front, to the bar and to-order drink service and beyond... blowing Elite Yelpers' minds (and taste buds) with a decadent display of ultra-high-end food. Joshua C and David Z doubled up on the oysters on the half shell while Catherine F absconded with the assorted cheese plate replete with bleu and manchego cheeses. The rustic bread with fois gras and manchego fritters were a huge hit, and deviled eggs topped with caviar and served in quarters (each on a single spoon) took this amazing event right over the top! Was this a royal reception or an Elite Event?!?

 Group2

As if the food and amazing cocktails were not enough, a few Yelpers walked out with some solid raffle prizes to boot! Ash A took home one of the most sought after prizes of the night, The Last Yelpicorn. Andrew C and Janessa P didn't make out too bad either. But the big winner of the evening was Britta E, who took home two VIP passes to the upcoming Taste of the Nation charity event to end childhood hunger. 50 Restaurants, wineries, breweries, distilleries, and live music, all for a cause? Oh yeah.

Westside Booth1

All said and done, Portland Yelp Elites were treated to an exclusive night of amazing food, swank atmosphere, delicious vodka, tasty wine, and frosty cold brews... and all with style. The bar has been set even higher!

But hey, don't just take it from us. Check the photos and reviews too!

Until next time... SYOY!

Boston Elites Get Their Hands on Some Herb!

'Twas the eve of four-twenty, when all through the square,
Elite Yelpers were gettin' their herbal on in the Soiree Room at Upstairs!

Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite1    Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite3    Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite6

That's right, on April 19 Boston Elites gathered at Harvard 'hood gem, Upstairs on The Square, for an evening of herbal exploration of the legal variety. Tarragon, nasturtium, Thai basil, lavender and rosemary were craftily infused into every bite and beverage, thanks to the culinary creativity of Chef Steven Brand and the fabulous beverage team at Upstairs.

Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite24  Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite72  Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite34 Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite54 Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite58

Greeted by Kir Royale cocktails crafted with house-infused lavender syrup, grapefruit libations with a sprig of fresh rosemary, Chardonnay made from grapes grown amongst herbs and a boldly blended Cabernet, Elites were welcomed into the Soiree Room for mingling and conversation. With drinks in hand, we sampled nasturtium deviled eggs, wraps of duck confit, fresh charcuterie, cured olives, stuffed cherry tomatoes, Tarragaon Blondies and chocolate-covered brown-sugar turtles.

The highlight of this delightful night? A contest of herbal proportions, of course! Hand-picked by Upstairs' Director of Operations, Matthew Lishanksy, five Elites sat blindfolded on an herbal panel to sniff, sample and nibble their way to guessing five different herbs! The Elite with the keenest herbal awareness scored a sweet gift certificate to Upstairs! Sparing no drama, it came down to a sudden-death Herb-Off between Blair H and Kristen P. The winner? With a clutch guess of Tarragon, Blair took home the prize and the title of Grand Champion Herb Master.

Some of the evening's most memorable moments:

*Ericalynn G being the first to arrive!

*Welcoming Elite-Event virgins Bret C, Holly S, Melissa D and Virginia Su M!

*Chef Steven Brand declaring the winner of the Herb Off with his line to Kristen P, as she was stuck on her last scent: "I think that is the smell of Blair winning!" Classic!

*Co-Proprietor Mary-Catherine Deibel chatting it up with Elites all night long about everything from vegetarian dishes to trips to Provence!

*Meeting Don W and his lovely wife Diane, who traveled all the way from New Hampshire to be with us!

Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite45 Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite43 Tatsu_upstairs_at_square_yelp_elite26

All of our gratitude tonight goes to, in the words of Kim K, our "unbelievably gracious hosts" at Upstairs on The Square: Mathew & Matthew, Augusto, Steven, Mary-Catherine and the rest of the Upstairs team, who went above and beyond to create a delectable menu of hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, and who's genuine hospitality made everyone feel at home.

To get an idea of of the night's festivities, check out the amazingly mouth-watering photos taken by Tatsu I or just read some of the stellar reviews. Oh, and for extra gossip, there's even a thread on Talk!

If you missed the fun, Upstairs on The Square has a whole host of happenings going on weekly, so be sure to stop by!

Cheers,

Houston, The Show Must Go On!

Posted by Farrah Akhtar

A major thunderstorm, flooding and a closed down I45 wasn’t enough to stop the almighty and powerful Houston Yelp Elite Squad from making it out to their April 18 Elite Event. Through the relentless rain, they made their way to the legendary SugarHill Recording Studios for a yelperific, rockin’ good time.

Sporting vintage concert tees and with mixed CDs in hand for the music swap, the gang was ready to tour one of Texas’ oldest and continuously operating music studios. SugarHill CEO and world-renowned music producer Dan Workman was there on site to give the Squad a welcoming tour; not only that, but the studio was open for all members to record their very own song in the historical Studio A and Studio B! What an honor to have Dan Workman producing our very own Yelp tunes! We caught Katie F spittin’ out Sir-Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” Long T wailing to “Dead or Alive” and Jaire Q completing an entire album (“Barbie Girl,” “Toxic,” “I Will Survive” and many more)! Thank goodness for those sound proof windows, because little laughter filled the soundboard room!

Special thanks to Indulge Desserts for providing heavenly treats. Nothing but "oohs and ahhs" filled the kitchen as yelpers noshed on chocolate croissant bread pudding, chocolate crème brulée topped with edible roses, strawberry shortcake bites, and chocolate covered strawberries glistening in edible gold.

Another huge thank you to the entire SugarHill Recording Studios gang, including Dan Workman, fellow Elite Gina M and all of the friendly and amazingly talented sound engineers. It was an Grammy Award-winning night!

For those who miss out, check out what others are saying about their experiences in the event reviews and on Talk, and don't miss out on the fun pictures!

DC Yelpers Compare East vs. West

Posted by Kevin L

Yelpers from in and around the nation's capital congregated at Vinoteca last night for a true battle of supremacy of the ages. At Yelp's East vs. West bi-coastal brew against vintage comparison, yelpers sampled craft beers from up and down the Atlantic seaboard and a variety of vinos from California's vaunted wineries to see which would come out on top.

Amanda M tipped back Allagash White from Maine and James L raised a saluted with some Victory Pils from Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, many other yelpers sipped, slurped, and swallowed from the bevvy of fruitful Californian options of Pedroncelli Winery, the sustainable estate of Tolosa Winery, and Roots Run Deep Winery's Educated Guess. It's fortunate that Vinoteca offered an unending spread of sample nibbles throughout the evening!

Paired up against these pleasant potables, we were graced by the presentation of a performance by our local flamenco troupe. On hand to capture all of the action, we had Jane K with her swift and sure shooting skills - be sure to scope out all of the photos. As if all the action last night weren't enough, the debate continues...

Until we rumble next, SYOY!

Chicago Yelp Branches Out: Wine & Vine in Elmhurst!

L

The Elite Squad made their way to Elmhurst on a recent, sunny Saturday afternoon to get a taste of the 'burbs! Yelp Chicago(land)? Indeed!

Newly opened Wine & Vine played host with a luxurious offering of pesto stuffed mushrooms, fresh fruit, a sinful spread of various cheeses (yelpers were wowed by the creamy bleu cheese!), a live pasta makin' station, and lemon chicken piccata in addition to other tasty nibbles. Chef and owner Hank Dreyer amazed onlookers as he masterfully "knifed" a seemingly regular cantaloupe into a lovely swan garnish, and regaled guests with tales of his stints on the Food Network!

On hand to educate the aspiring vinophiles with a fabulous wine tasting were the folks from Southern Wine & Spirits, offering a fabulous selection of reds, whites and bubblies for yelpers to "oooh" and "ahhh" 'over! Nickle & Nickle, Berringer Reserve and Moet Chandon champagne among others? Yes, please!

Two lucky winners (Kim D and Evan T, both guests of elite yelpers!) took home "Chef for a Day" packages, where they'll get to return and shadow Chef Dreyer in the Wine & Vine kitchen for a day!

Safe to say all that attended were lucky with this first suburban event...as everyone left with a special gift from Wine & Vine, a card good for a complimentary bottle of wine when they return for dinner! And after this "sneak peek," who wouldn't want to go back for more?

Look what all of the yelpers are saying: read the reviews here! Special thanks to the folks at Wine & Vine for their hospitality, the guys at Southern Wines for providing the vino, and to Amanda C  and Mike O for serving as official photogs for the day..."cheese" is right, eh!?

Until the next time we rock the 'burbs!

Yelper, You've Been Made!

Posted by Dawson S

This week the LA Elite Squad descended on downtown to party like it was 1933 at the Mobsters n' Molls Elite Party hosted by historic Cole's restaurant serving up their famous dip sandwiches since they opened their doors in 1908. Guys and dolls dressed to the nines in their finest '20s-'30s flapper and mob glam and our very own Dick Tracy was on hand to issue citations to those who forgot to don their vintage threads.

YelpColes0409_0022YelpColes0409_0351YelpColes0409_0151 YelpColes0409_0101

YelpColes0409_0334The evening got off to a great start with the stylistic sounds of a live jazz trio and delicious samples of Cole's Famous Dip sandwiches with roast beef, pork, turkey, lamb and plenty of jus accompanied by cole slaw, bacon potato salad and atomic spicy pickles.

Free flowing were the 1926 Cosmopolitans made famous by the Traveling Mixologists of the time. Pretty in pink, they packed a punch with gin, house made raspberry syrup, lemon juice and a cloying twist of orange zest.

Lucky costume contest winners Keisha F and Vinh N went home with gift certificates for a fabulous pin-up photo session courtesy of  Boudoir Rouge and a classic hot shave from Sweeney Todd's Barber Shop.

After our bootleggers were done strutting their stuff, it was time for some good, old fashioned fun with the pie eating contest! Four brave contestants went head to head to see who could conquer the chocolate cream pie, but only one prevailed. Austin S and Emily H put up a good fight, but it was winner Kevin C who walked away with some serious street cred, a pail of goodies from Cole's... and a belly ache!

Also on hand was Monica from Boudoir Rouge and local paparazzo blogger Ed Fuentes to catch the entire evening on kodachrome. To end on a sweet note, guests sampled more of Cole's tempting treats like the caramel drenched bread pudding and bourbon pecan pie. After that it was lights out!

IMG_9869-vi Last night, Yelp Elite and guests indulged at Esquire's Best New Restaurant of 2008 and Michelin-star recipient Plumed Horse in charming Downtown Saratoga. The beautifully renovated interior boasts a gorgeous glass fireplace, a private plush champagne room, a magnificent dining room, an intimate chef's tasting room and incredible wine vault with a glass floor looking down to the massive wine cellar. Yelpers were definitely in for a treat!

Guests sampled Chef Peter Armellino's culinary delights including filet mignon sliders, oysters, scallops, tuna tartare and brownie bites with caviar just to name a few, and enjoyed fine wine tastings provided by local vitners Ridge Vineyards & Winery and Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards. Bartenders Matthew and Tiffany also served up tasty lemon drops with a sweet surpise at the bottom: tapioca pearls!

Many thanks to the gracious staff at Plumed Horse for hosting such a fabulous event. Be sure to check out the official photos taken by Christina C on flickr and if you missed the event, read what the Elites are saying about the event here!

Brooklyn Yelp Gets Down at the Tax Evasion Celebration!

Posted by peter d.

Last night 175 NYC yelpers got sinfully smashed at a subterranean soiree in the UnderWater Lounge at Water Street Restaurant! Zach K showed up early and hid from the IRS behind a stack of cash, while yelpers got down doggy-style with complimentary cocktails from Bulldog Gin and more than a few peeps were pounding beers from Harpoon Brewery. Everyone got a chance to sample the the culinary creations of Water Street Restaurant's own chef, Reggie, including Swedish meatballs, coconut shrimp, and the WINGS.

Although a few yelpers might be hurting today because they put down a little too much of the Recession Proof Punch and the , sometimes that's how you know it was a great party! Whether or not you were able to make it out, be sure to read the reviews, peep some pics, and check out what people are saying!

And if you missed the party, and had to pay up...damn the [Tax]Man.

SF Elites Smoke the Hookah at Morak

Posted by Nicole Grant

Yelp Elites came out last night for an enchanting evening of throbbing beats, sexy belly dancers and exotic hookah smoking at the Morak Restaurant and Lounge.

Exotic aromas of mango, licorice, passion fruit and caramel filled the air as yelpers puffed away, and many people ventured over to see Henna Garden and have some beautiful tattoos applied. Belly dancers from Damage Control Dance Theater at ShoeBox Studios hopped up on the bar to entertain the crowd.

IMG_0816IMG_7880IMG_0806

The cucumber and lychee Kai Vodka cocktails were dangerously delicious, and the Firestone Beer paired perfectly with the bites from Morak's menu, including tasty hummus and pita confections, roasted red bell pepper with walnut and spices and chicken wraps.

Congrats to Aaron G for winning Dinner for Two at Morak and Courtney B who scored Hookah for Two at Morak in the raffle. Also, Amanda C, Chrissy L, Lynnie P, Stephan W and Chris D won 5-class passes for belly dancing lessons at ShoeBox Studios!

A lovely time was had by all.

Arrrrrrgggh! Pirate party with San Diego's Yelp Elite!

San Diego's Yelp Elite Squad rounded up their Elite Double Header on Saturday with a jaunt over to Fiddler's Green on Shelter Island. With the fun, open watered nature of the sailor hangout at Fiddler's, party invitees were encouraged to sport pirate gear to the event!

In addition to the pirate theme, we walked out on the plank just a bit and encouraged wenches and gents alike to bring a (clean) pair of chonies to the party for our pirate "booty swap." Get it? We think this picture says it all:

Yelp Denver Gets Involved In A Hairy Affair

Last Thursday evening Denver Yelp's Elite Squad donned mustaches, mullets and sometimes a combination of the two, and headed over to the Atomic Cowboy for the latest Elite Event. Whether yelpers were au natural or using the stick-on version (we even saw one "bus-stache"), they all went to great lengths to look hairy. But, in the end Dave W and Jesse B (you knew her as Chuck for the evening) took home the winning trophies.

Deschutes Brewery supplied the motley crew with Black Butte Porter and Mirror Pond Pale Ale to get those 'staches nice and foamy, while Goat Vodka provided a different kind of "refreshment." Through it all Fat Sully's kept our bellies full and our mouths happy with a wide variety of their pizzas.

You can check out what everyone is saying in the reviews. And while it's true that pictures are usually worth a thousand words, some of them from the event just may leave you speechless!

Yelp Chicago Does the Mango!

Over 350 Chicago yelpers hit up West Loop club Bon V on Friday night in an effort to get their MANGO on! Of course, complimentary Absolut Mango cocktails (the Fixx, Cosmo and Retreat), mango + coconut cookies from the sweethearts of Suvan's Café & Bakery, salad wraps by Citizen Bar and snacks and eye candy by Pink Monkey all awaited the Yelp Elite crew..not to mention a large Pink Monkey roaming, dancing and helping the party into high gear!

Actionbooth.com got folks to jump around, as evidenced by hundreds of yelper action shots that were instantaneously projected onto the 100 foot screen over the Bon V bar! Joe R and his actionbooth.com ninjas made sure everyone was all over the place (jumping, tumbling, posin', you name it!), and from the looks of some of these shots...they did a fantastic job of getting people off the floor! Nikki C provided the musical stylings...per usual!

Also on hand was Matt Ginger of Ginger By Design...to flick a few photos of the mango madness...thanks to all that came out to "da club" and stay tuned for the next one!

What happens when you shoehorn 150 Austin yelpers with killer beer, great pizza and two of Austin's rising comedians! Well, hilarity of course! We gathered into the ambient confines of The Jackalope, where Austin yelpers took on some tasty bevvies from North Coast Brewing, complemented those with some killer pies from The Jack pizzeria, and brought the whole thing home with comic sets from John Ramsey and Bryan Guttmann. As always, we were surrounded by familiar faces and shining new ones, and reveled in the best part about elite events. Each other!

Miami's Elite Squad ventures north!

Posted by Maria Arguello

On Tuesday, April 7th, Miami's Elite yelpers partied their way into new territory as they gathered in Ft. Lauderdale. The venue for this inaugural Elite event was Yolo located right on Las Olas. As South Florida was having a slightly chilly and windy night the yelpers headed indoors and took over the O Lounge for the night's festivities.

Picture 6 Picture 7 Picture 13

Elite yelpers and their guests sampled some of Yolo's most succulent treats and sweets including tuna sashimi, bbq ribs with green apple slaw, truffled Yolo chips, szechuan calamari, shrimp and crab rolls, homemade carrot cake, and of course the Floridian staple key-lime pie. Denise F summed it all up "The food was OUT OF THIS WORLD."

Seattle's Yelp Elite go to Intiman Theatre!

Posted by Katie Scharer

Wednesday night, Seattle's Yelp Elite joined up with for a night of theatre at Seattle's beloved Intiman Theatre! Crime & Punishment, a thriller adapted from one of the most famous suspense novels of all time.

IMG_5986 IMG_5987 IMG_5992 IMG_5991

Before the performance, Yelpers partook in some pre-funk action in The Founder's Room, mingling with fellow Elite before the show. With punch and small bites, along with some delicious candies provided by Landrin, it made for the perfect pre-party before the show. Sandra S confesses that it was in fact her, "stuffing her face with cheese, Landrin chocolates, and those amazing strawberries."

DSC01908 DSC01896 DSC01906

The performance itself was a fast-paced (to say the least) thriller. The cast of three performed for a solid 90 minutes with no set or costume changes. The result? An extremely impactful, thrilling performance. Inna B really enjoyed the show, stating that she's "glad she took the opportunity to experience it. It was interesting seeing three people play all the roles. It'll probably take another day or two to fully process..." It was pretty intense.

Afterward, Yelpers joined up with the rest of the patrons for what else? A White Russian Discussion. Those in attendance were presented with the opportunity to openly 'ax' any questions they may have had about the performance, which prompted some very interesting discussions.

IMG_5994 IMG_5998 IMG_6009

If you've never been to Intiman Theatre, 2009 is the year to do so! Not just to check out Crime & Punishment, but with upcoming performances like "A Thousand Clowns" and "Othello," it's a 'must' for any Seatteite who loves the arts. Or even better yet, check out their Subscription Options with lots of packages to choose from!

A big thanks goes out to the lovely folks at Intiman Theatre for hosting such a fabulous event. Check out Ron M's photos on flickr and read what the Elite are saying about the event here!

Yelp Elite Double Header--Bing Crosby's Piano Lounge

San Diego yelpers donned their finest garb last night in honor of of the Rat Pack themed Bing Crosby's Piano Lounge in Fashion Valley. From vests, to dresses, to fedoras... the Yelp Elite Squad here in San Diego proved to be a rather stylish bunch.

The first of TWO Yelp Elite events this week was a huge success and a ton of fun! Yelpers nom nom nomed on open faced BLT sandwiches. Mini crab cakes with lemon aioli. Stuffed mushrooms with blue cheese, bacon, and spinach. Asian style tuna tartare on a crispy won tons. And the roast beef and pork tenderloin carving stations were a huge hit as well!

L-3 L-2 L-1

Of course, none of this could have gone down without the AMAZING hospatility from the staff at Bing Crosby's. Bryan and his team went all out to ensure everyone in attendance had a wonderful Tuesday night. If last night was any indicator of the great taste featured every day at Bing's, San Diego might have a new foodie haven on it's hands!

Big ups to Trumer Pilsner for providing their delicious brew for the duration of the party and Stoli vodka for hookin' up the specialty drinks.

Metro Detroit Yelpers Get Their Game On...

Posted by Mariah C

Right before the kick-off of the Final Four in D-town, the Metro Detroit Elite Squad participated in some friendly competition of their own... though of a slightly less athletic nature!

Elite Squad members and their guests turned out in full force at Mudgie's on the evening of Thursday, April 2 to challenge each other to some favorite childhood games (Jenga or Scrabble, anyone?), as well as attempting to play some crazy random thrift-ed finds (Cheers trivia? Gremlins Uno? Wheel of Fortune?). We learned that Janelle P rules at Sorry!, Henry B plays a mean game of Chutes and Ladders, and Kelly W rocks (maybe a little too much) Boggle!

The Elite crew was comfy and cozy as owner Greg Mudge and his staff served up a spread of delicious mini-sandwiches, some samples, and a famous "Fudgie Mudgie" sundae for each table.

As wheels were spinning and dice were tossed, yelpers tossed back a few cold ones, enjoying some Bell's Winter White while saying goodbye (we hope!) to Ol' Man Winter.  One of the first major thunderstorms of the spring raged outdoors, but inside the warm orange walls, spirits were sunny!

Angela B and Andrew B took home miniature giftbags with a few Detroit themed goodies, and other people just took home some great photos and very, very full bellies! You can check out what people are saying about the event, and also see some pics from the evening.

Many thanks to Greg Mudge and everyone at Mudgie's for being such superb hosts, to Jeremy W and Louis P for helping out, and to all of the fantastic Elite Squad members and guests who came on out to get pleY-ful!

Until next time, SYOY!

New York Yelp Elite Get 'Wasted' at Toxic Avenger!

Two Elite Events. Two nights. One very large, very green and very slimy mutant dude from Jersey.

Though it opens April 6th, a select group of NY Yelp Elites previewed one of the "funniest, cleverest" musicals about Jersey ever: The Toxic Avenger! Overtaking the private Tox Box at New World Stages, musically-minded John N and Topher B scooped up Crimson & Cream cupcakes courtesy of Sweet Revenge while Liz B stole to her seat with one (or two) glasses of adult grape juice before the show.

How did Toxie fare? Don't take our advice, check out the reviews here and don't miss the sexy photos of our gorgeous audience!

Yelp Salutes Beer

We recently had the opportunity to help promote Beer Wars, a feisty documentary that focuses on thAbee "daily battles and all-out wars that dominate the beer industry." As part of the deal, director Anat Baron agreed to let us show a 60-second spot right before each film screening. Being our typically scrappy selves, we asked yelper Remy M, who had previously created our Things That Make You Go Yelp video, to work on the project. After some brainstorming, we found inspiration, much like Obama did, from our 16th President! Now, more than ever, it's imperative that we all drink good beer.

Here's the link again, in case you are already drunk and can't read so well.

Channing Frye Yelps!

Posted by Don Bourassa

Channing-deck

Portland loves its Trailblazers, but is that lovin' reciprocal? To Channing Frye it is! He's from Arizona but might as well have been born and raised on the South Waterfront. The "Buffet of Goodness" is so stoked to live in Rip City he even blogs about it! Don B sits down with Channing to find out how one of the nicest guys in the NBA rolls in the five-oh-three.

Don B: I know you've reviewed some restaurants on your blog, what are your top-5 restaurants in Portland?

Channing Frye: “Easy: Pok Pok stands out because it’s so different. That Spanish place… Toro Bravo… love it. People are gonna kill me for this one, but Stanich's. Oh, and Fratelli, I love that place.” “And breakfast at the Screen Door! We waited and waited outside that place and thought “this better be worth it." I got the chicken and waffles. I saw that one person had it, and, this is so stereotypical, but I had to get it, and it was SO GOOD.”

DB: Any other places?

CF: “Veritable Quandary. I love that place.” “And Cha Cha Cha. Great burritos.” “Oh, and Stepping Stone Café.”

DB: Where do you go out? The upscale bars/clubs?

CF: “Hate ‘em. I prefer spots like the Goodfoot and the Gemini – it’s in Lake Oswego so you would expect the crowd to be all… you know... but they’re actually cool and chill.” "Dante's is always interesting too."

DB: Do you ever eat at the food carts?

CF: “One time. I ate at a Mexican cart and it tore my stomach UP! But I heard they’re legit, so I am down to try anything.”

DB: What about post-game food?

CF: “My parents like to go to El Gaucho. We like Fratelli, Buffalo Gap.” “Oh, and the White Eagle Saloon. They gave me a free pitcher of beer when we went in there after a game (laughs). “

DB: This is beer-town. Where do you like to go to drink beer?

CF: “Widmer. I have a good friend there, so my loyalty is to where my friends are. I used to go to Bridgeport a lot. And I tried Deschutes, but I just don’t see the difference between them and, uh, Bridgeport. I see different beers being like Hair of the Dog. I used to go out to the Horse Brass a lot. We used to go when it was all smoky, though, so we had to stop going.”

DB: Okay, this is "Bridge City", what’s your favorite bridge?

CF: “The Ross Island Bridge, it’s the bridge I look at every day.”

DB: That’s right, you live on the South Waterfront. What’s hot down there?

CF: “Not much going on down there right now. Le Hana and this Vietnamese place called [Bambuza], which is good, but not too healthy.  I think that when they put that in there, they put it there too early. They should have put something in different from Le Hana. They should have put a sports bar in there, that would be packed 24/7. People get done with work and want to go watch a game, and now all they have is the Buffalo Gap or Gemini.”

DB: Alright, where do you get your gear in Portland?

CF: “Nike? (Laughs). Ok, I get most of my clothes made for me [he is 6’11” and 245lb], but I get my clothes and kicks at Oddball and at Upper Playground, I love that store. Oh, and I got a suit for my wedding at Mario’s. And one of my underground spots is Hot Topic. They have the best funny T-shirts. They used to laugh every time I went in there in Phoenix and in Tucson. They would say ‘um, not to be racist or anything, but you’re the only black person who ever comes in here.’ I was, like, ‘I love you guys too.’ These guys are emo, with painted white faces. They were so scared when I came in. ‘Excuse me sir, do you know which store this is?” “Yeah, I just like the funny shirt section. Not the teddy bears, the pacifiers, or the pants with 36 chains and stuff…’”

DB: Where do you go to watch a game when you’re not on the court?

CF: “Buffalo Gap. I need to buy them a new couch (laughs), but seriously, it’s so old. I told them I’d buy them a new couch… they at least need to put some cushions on that thing.” “Macadam’s is kind of my little sleeper on Macadam because you look at it and it think ‘oh, it’s not going to be all that good’, but the clam chowder is good, the burgers are good, and they’ve got TV’s.”

DB: What about your favorite places to get outdoors and play?

CF: “90% of the time I am somewhere near the Willamette or at that park on 33rd and Russell [Grant Park] playing kickball. I love playing kickball.”

DB: What else do you do in Portland?

CF: “Saturday Market. Oh man. Elephant ears. That’s the best part about it. That, and the fact that I am constantly looking over my back to see if I am going to get stabbed by someone all wacked out on drugs. I was scared… for my LIFE. I thought the dude playing the guitar was going to stab my in my clavicle with his claw.”  (laughs)

DB: What do you do for fun besides Saturday Market?

CF: “Anything and everything. See shows at Roseland and Wonder Ballroom. Saw Mickey Avalon at Dante’s. Saw Lupe Fiasco at Roseland. I never went to concerts before but now that I’ve been to these places, I love ‘em.” “I love Uptown billiards. That place is fun. Grand Central is trend setting. I love that place because I can bowl for a while, then I can go upstairs to do some adult stuff, have a drink, and there’s so many TV’s. That place is great.  It’s just a good venue.”

DB: What’s your favorite thing about living in Portland?

CF: “Everybody here is unique. It’s not like ‘I’m wearing this to be cool… I’m wearing it to be comfortable.’ Everyone here is unique and comfortable and loves being outside. I love that on a nice day the restaurants have big sliding doors that open up and everyone can be outside. It’s like an adult college town.” “I also love that people do stuff like Flugtag here. I had so much fun at Flugtag last year. “

DB: What about the MLS deal here in Portland, you a soccer fan?

CF: “No, but it’s cool! I like anything live.” “I would go to a Timbers game.”

DB: What is the one thing Portland’s missing?

CF: “A Major League Baseball team. I love the Beavers, but there are no major names to watch. If we had a team, even if we sucked, people would go to see teams like the Mariners and Yankees come and play our team. Plus it would help the economy and create more jobs to build a stadium. Plus, it gives us some summer sports. “

“Other than that… what’s that Mexican place? Aquí? Well, let’s just say we need better Mexican food. We have plenty of good Thai food, like that place up near PSU, [Baan-Thai], but we need more Mexican food. Oh, and we need a place that has a good breakfast burrito. Tell me where that is. Bacon, egg, potato, and cheese. That’s what I want.”

Yelp Atlanta Scores a Hole in One!

The Yelp Atlanta Elite Squad drove one home at South City Kitchen in Vinings for a Masterful March Celebration! As our neighbors over in Augusta trim the azaleas and prepare the greens, we in Atlanta were celebrating in true Southern style!

While Alain L putted a hole in one on our practice putting green, Jim W enjoyed mint juleps by Maker's Mark. South City Kitchen provided wonderful Southern eats like fried green tomatoes with goat cheese, pulled pork, butterbean hummus, and macadamia nut chocolate chip cookies. One of the party highlights for Zack E was the specialty cocktail just for Yelpers: a "Masters libation" consisting of sweet tea vodka, lemonade, unsweet tea, and triple sec. It was certainly green-jacket worthy!

You can find all of the photographic evidence here and be sure to post your own take on the festivities here! FORE!

See y'all next time!
