MSP Yelpers Get Ghoulish at Club Jager

Posted by Sarah Peterson

Yelpparty31_2 On Tuesday, October 28th, about 60 of the ever fabulous Twin Cities' Elites gathered at Clubhouse Jager to partake in a pre-Halloween warm up party. Could a better venue have been chosen for these festivities? Yelp thinks not.The historic building had a eery yet funky vibe with its low lighting, bygone-era details, and opium den-like booth that hosted our omnicient tarot reader, Viki. Jager's amazing manager, Angie, offered up a delicious spread of tasty meats, cheeses and other fun nibbles and Fabulous Freddie, the shaker of all things Yelptini, made sure the Elites' thirsts were satisfactorily quenched. Travis kept us groovin' while we were all hard at work carving up some spectacular pumpkin art. A huge thank you to all who made MSP Yelp's second Elite event an affair to remember.

So, in short, just what went down? Well many of us saw glipses into our deeper selves with the help from Vicki...some found out they were worriers, some just sailed through life, and one of us found out they were having a 6.9 lb baby boy! Hmmm...only the New Year will tell! Kristian V payed it forward by donating to the Coats for Kids Drive and was the proud recipient of a Kowalski's gift card for his charitable efforts. Thanks to all who donated; there are not 44 Metro Area children who will be a bit warmer this winter. Keith S once again brought along the winners. Not only did his crew win last month's bowling game, but his fan club also won the Pumpkin Carving Competition!! I hope they share the Halloween Microbrews with you Keith! The Aloft ladies came in a close second with their last minute entry of the Accu-Pumpkin. Talk about working under pressure!  Ralph M might file a complaint with ACORN for my voting policies, as he thinks I closed the booths a little early!

It was great seeing some new faces in person, like Jim M, Matthew C, Michael C, Sally K, Jen E, and Val B. And, of course, reconnecting with other Elites like Kevin M, Maureen C and Gilbert A (among many more). A yelpin shout out to Gabi K, who travelled all the way from temperate Arizona for this fantastic get together. You rock!

Thanks again to all who came out and an extra special thank you to everyone at Club Jager!! I'm sure many of us will be stopping in soon!

As the fall winds down, keep your eyes on that Elite calendar (remember, you access it by clicking o your Elite badge)...the posting for the December event will be up soon!!

Have a Happy, Safe, and Scary Halloween!

NYC Elites Say Wine Not?

This past Tuesday proved that plummeting temperatures and a rain storm can't keep our Yelp Elite at home when there's wine on the line! New York's creme de la creme Elites gathered after work at Bowery Wine Company in the East Village to imbibe boozy Pearl Vodka cocktails, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Chardonnay. The good people at BWC also served up big bites of bruschetta and gooey yummy pizza.

Old school Elites, like Nina C, Mel F and Ro N, came out to show our Newbie Elites how it's done. Natasha L and Lexy M convinced Craig N to shuttle wine from the bar to their cozy corner while Meg W and Peter D mastered the Elite mingle. Yelpers are a thirsty bunch and the wine was so popular that Neil, resident master bartender, had to revert to beer glasses for the Jesus juice--much to the despair of a very parched Jeffrey K!

The big announcement of the night caused a bit of a stir as resident Mayor, Sam P, handed over the torch to our new NYC Mayoress, Jane K. We'll miss you Sam-o, but the party...er show, must go on! Check out our Elite Calendar for all the fun stuff heating up as the mercury drops.

For more details, check out the reviews, talk, and photos from the evening!

LA Yelp Elite: The Fifth Time's the Charm!

Posted by Sarah A

Dsc_7405On October 27th, the LA Yelp Elite squad met, mixed and mingled at The Fifth in Valley Village. Old school members and brand-spankin' new additions to the Elite squad came together to enjoy delicious Christiana Vodka cocktails, mixed to perfection by the fabulous bar staff.

Dsc_7321Dsc_7362 Yelpers took advantage of the 200 free credits on the jukebox, picking out a selection of awesome tunes, and the delicious pizza from Danielle's Woodfired Pizza was devoured in the blink of an eye by hungry Elites!

Dsc_7314 It was yelper vs. yelper on the old-school video game tables (drink in one hand, joystick in another!), while other Elites showed off their pool shark skills on the table in back.

Yelpers also got a surprise treat with the former LA Mayor of Mischief, the legendary Stephy S in town to announce the newest additions to Yelp's SoCal family: the lovely Veronica R joining the LA team and Hazel Q debuting as Orange County's long awaited community manager! Welcome ladies!

Austin Yelpers Get Shot(s)!

No one knows Austin like the local band of explorers we know as Austin Yelpers, and arming them with single use cameras only helped to deepen that distinction. Because recently, Austin yelpers gathered after a week of photo taking to explore the fruits of their labor, namely, the many terrific photos of our city that helped to exemplify what makes Austin (and the Yelpers taking these shots) special. What we ended up with was an amazing collection of photography, vodka, chocolate and beer and the company of some of the coolest, most creative peeps in town. Some days, seeing your world through the eyes (and lens) of others is deeply satisfying.

Boston Elites: Costumes, Candy and Trick or Treat!

And let it be known, there were treats for EVERYONE!

In the spirit of All Hallow's Eve, Boston's Yelp Elite Squad packed the house at Tantric Indian Bistro for a spooktacular night of dressing up and getting down! Greeted by the Great Yelp Pumpkin, creatively costumed party goers were entered into a raffle for tickets to Thursday night's Jack O'Lampin Halloween Party with Travis McCoy from the Gym Class Heros and DJ Questlove. Plus, everyone received a mysterious gold-sealed envelope upon arrival. A peek inside revealed an opportunity for yelpers and guests to get in touch with their saucy side: a gift card from Newbury's sleekest adult shop: Too Timid!

The hotness only continued with a spicy feast of delectable Indian cuisine courtesy of Tantric, who supplied a little something for everyone with vegetarian and vegan options! And with beverages in bulk supplied by Beck's, everyone kept their cool with Beck's Dark, Beck's Light and Beck's Oktoberfest flowing all night long! Even the Beck's girls came out in their luscious lederhosen, doling out necklaces, hats and those super-nifty beer steins.

But the goodies didn't stop there! In between bites of pakoras, yelpers were elaborately decorated in traditional mehndi by the fabulously talented Heather, from Henna by Heather. From beautiful palm work to more delicately placed designs, many left the party even more adorned than before! And in case you missed out at the last event, tarot card readings were in full affect once again, interpreted by Steve Carter, a spiritual maven who's talents extend beyond the cards. Bringing a little authenticity to the event, real-life witch Joni Ray Latham was in the house to  educate Elites about the practices and importance that All Hallow's Eve holds for her culture.

Costumes you say? Costumes indeed!  With Amanda H as Cock Sauce, Damon I as Joe Six Pack, and John S as the Yelp Profile, it's no surprise that Boston Yelp's got the creative juices on lock! For those who went above and beyond, the spoils were sweet: Melissa C scored 'Best Female Costume' as an adorable Wind-Up Doll and took home a gift card from G20 Spa & Salon. 'Best Male Costume' went to Jon H's Quail Man and he was rewarded with a sweet speaker bar from Beck's. Ericalynn G scored the coveted 'Most Creative' for "Change You Can Believe In" and a MiniLuxe gift certificate. And 'Best Couple's Costume' went to Scott B and Melissa M as Juno, who'll dine at Tantric with a gift card!

Special thanks to our prize sponsors: G20 Spa & Salon, MiniLuxe, Tantric, Beck's, and Jon at FutureClassic for providing the Jack O'Lampin tickets! Our appreciation to Mary and her team at Tantric, plus Ed and the Beck's crew for helpin' to make the night happen!

Capturing the moments of mayhem and debauchery was our very own Billy Idol, er, Tatsu I, and keeping the door in check was the ever-gracious Yumiko F! Had a costume favorite or memory to share? Peep the official photos and be sure let us know what you loved!

Be on the lookout for the next Elite shindig!

And until then...

Masked Yelpers Have a Roux-ing Time at Santana Row!

Posted by Connie Chang

2970253772_a910eac7fa On October 22, Silicon Valley Yelp Elite and their guests were disguised in beautiful masques and dressed to the nines, to kick off the Halloween season at Roux at Santana Row. Festivities ensued for five, yes, five hours!

Guests had a blast trying to figure out who was hiding behind the masques while enjoying New Orleans-inspired cocktails and Creole appetizers all night long. The masked bartenders served up Roux's signature cocktail, the Cucumber Mojito Martini, as well as deadly Hand Grenades and Hurricanes. Delicious tastes from the kitchen included hush puppies, crab cakes, chicken tenders, Jambalaya rice, grits, sweet potato fries, Cajun wedges, onion rings and pulled pork sliders.

Most Yelpiest Masque goes to Serbelle I -- spot her Yelp burst masque in photos! Check out the reviews and Talk thread to hear what people are saying and to see photos by yelpers, including our official photos taken by Richard T!

Have a Yelpy Halloween!

Seattle Yelp Elite Rock Out at Kings of Leon!

Posted by Katie Scharer

The Seattle Yelp Elite Squad became the "Cowboy Kings (and Queens) of The Rodeo" the other night when we Yelped it up Elite style at The Paramount Club, before hittin' up the Kings of Leon concert!

Img_4807Yelpers were challenged with the task to submit the 'Ultimate Maker's Mark Cocktail.' The most innovative entries got them access to this event, which took place in The Paramount Club: an exclusive 'Members Only' Club (complete with a private entrance) located in the basement of the Landmark Theatre. Swank, sexy lighting and an intimate atmosphere make this the perfect getaway from the crowds and a lovely way to prefunk before any concert!

Winning submissions were the featured cocktails in The Paramount Club on the night of the show. Yelper Emily T, who had "Maker's Mark coursing through her veins" was thrilled to see that her concoction "Leon Meets his Maker" took first place, alongside Mairead R's submit entitled "Maker Say Hell Yeah!" In addition to the winning cocktails, the Elite Squad also partook in some tasty traditional Maker's Mark Manhattans. If that wasn't enough, we were lucky enough to have the Maker's Mark Assistant Master Distiller, Denny in town (from Kentucky) as our Special Guest that evening.Img_4811

Yelpers indulged on tasty nibbles, ie: a Massive (Gorgeous!) Cheese plate, Roasted Vegetables, and Sandwiches, provided by Tom Douglas Catering. Tony G particulary enjoyed himself that evening, as he admitted that "sometimes when people were talking to him, he would tune them out and focus on how he could get more bread, cheese and sandwiches without looking like a fata**!" Hey... we don't blame you Tony... that spread was outta this world!

The fine folks at The Paramount Club also held a drawing for tickets. The winning Yelper was Natalie W, who got herself a pair o' tickets for Cathy Griffin next month! Funny thing is, she was planning on going to the show anyway.

Cheese and Bourbon aside, the balcony seats to this SOLD OUT show were fantastic! The Paramount Club seats are where it's at. Up front and personal in the first section of the balcony, these are easily the best seats in the house! Yelpers rocked out together (and some in unison) to their favorite songs by bands, 'The Stills', 'We are Scientists', and– WooHoo– 'Kings of Leon!' And while completely unplanned (we'd like to say we had something to do with it), Eddie Vedder jumped out on stage and partnered up with the band on 'Slow Night' towards the end of their setThis event was one for the books.

We'll end with a quote from Yelper Amie S, as we feel it best sums up the evening: "Secret Squirrel side entrance, hidden club under the stairs, a sweet spread of cheese, cheese, and more cheese... cocktails, nerdy rock boys and balcony seats with a spectacular view of the stage???? YES PLEASE."

Until Next Time, Seattle!

Phoenix Yelp's 1st Birthday pARTy!

The Phoenix Art Museum was the perfect venue for Phoenix Yelp's 1st Birthday pARTy... Old school Elites and tons of new yelpers mingled, mixed, lounged, and explored the night away.  One for All, and All for One: The Jumpsuit was the favorite exhibit of the night.

Krow Music
and DJ Tricky T rocked the hizzouse while our favorite food partners went above and beyond with samples galore! Thanks again to the herb box, Bombay Spice, Mamma Mia, Fez, Ticoz, and Switch for the plentiful eats, and to Gelato Spot and Wicked Bakery for the sweet treats!

Special guest appearance from Marilyn Monroe was a entertaining; we truly enjoyed the "Happy Birthday Yelp.com" adaptation of the song!  Kudos to Arizona Photobooth Company and four white walls photography who captured the pARTy on film.  This was the biggest Phoenix Yelp event yet, and a fantastic time was had by all!

For more details, check out the reviews, Talk, and pictures from the evening.  (More pics coming soon.)

Broke-Ass Stuart on being Young, Broke and Beautiful in San Francisco

Posted by Nicole Grant

It's hard being young, broke and beautiful. Luckily, Broke-Ass Stuart, author of the popular Guide to Living Cheaply in San Francisco (and a pretty swell yelper himself) has been penny pinching for a long time. Our own Nicole G and Jessica T got cozy with the Broke-Ass One at Butter to get his take on all that's fun, cheap and free in this zany city we call home.

Broke_ass_jess_nicole Jessica: We hear San Francisco is your all-time favorite city. Why?

BAS: Because no matter how freaky-deaky you are, there is always someone WAY more deranged than you. Plus, have you looked at this city? It's beautiful.

Nicole: You're known for searching out the best cheap eats in town. What's in your top 3 right now?

BAS: I'm always a fan of Yamo -- that place is so good and so cheap! I've also recently been going to Taqueria Guadalajara, which is amazing. Plus, a few weeks ago I had a slice from Golden Boy Pizza for the first time in a while. I had forgotten how stellar that sh*t is.

Nicole: What's your favorite late night dining option?

BAS: These days I'll just go for whatever taqueria is closest, whether Cancun or El Farolito.

Jessica: Man can't live on bread alone. Can you really get free booze every night of the week?

BAS: Yes, you can. A lot of the nicer hotels around Union Square, like the Hotel Monaco, give out free wine from 5 - 7 p.m. So you can always check those out.

Shirt Jessica: Where can we find you hanging out on a typical Friday night?

BAS: I'm usually in the Mission. I've been lazy lately, so I haven't had the desire to leave the neighborhood.  I think I end up at Delirium or Casanova a lot, but that might just be due to their proximity to the Bacon Dog Cart.

Nicole: How do you impress your lady? You must have some unique date spots up your sleeve.

BAS: Luckily for me, having "Broke-Ass" in my name sets the bar pretty low. They know that we're not gonna go to Boulevard. :) I like activity-related dates like going to the museums on free days. If it's a nice night, drinking wine or 40s in Dolores Park is always a solid bet. Otherwise, try an art opening.

Jessica: What are some of your favorite free activities?

BAS: I like to wander and explore neighborhoods I don't usually go to. You can always find cool sh*t. San Francisco is full of neat places to see like the Wave Organ or the pet cemetery in The Presidio. There are tons of cool stairway walks you can take. If that sounds like too much walking for you, you can just sit in your house and play Grand Theft Auto.

Nicole: You're on top of the local art and music scene. How can we enjoy the arts while penny pinching?

BAS: When you go to an event, let’s say like the SF Indie Mart, you can meet people who are into the same sh*t you are and do some networking.  That way you can find out about all the cool, cheap, underground events.

Broke_ass_3 Nicole
: Where do you get your clothes? You have that je ne sais quoi.

BAS: Almost everything I wear is second-hand. I shop at thrift stores like Mission Thrift and Community Thrift and garage sales. Plus, I stole a lot of clothes from my dad's closet. I've also had a lot of my clothes for years, so what I do is constantly try to think of new ways to wear the same clothes. I try to match them up differently each time. Sure, sometimes I look like Stevie Wonder dressed me, but most of the time I end up looking kinda fly.

Jessica: We hear you just got a new apartment. Where did you go bargain hunting for furniture and quirky decos?

BAS: Craigslist is of course my go-to source.  You can find anything from an armoire to a blowjob on Craigslist, and often at the same place. Also, we've been going to Ikea, the Salvation Army and the Goodwill to fill in the stuff we couldn't find on the internet. But thankfully this is San Francisco, and sometimes you can just be walking down the street and someone has put out some furniture on the street that you just so happen to need. Some call it serendipity, I call it "finders keepers, losers weepers."

Nicole: One person's trash is another person's treasure. Where can we find the best castaways?

BAS: Anywhere really. It's just a matter of luck. But if I were a betting man, I'd wager that at the end of each school year you’d find some pretty good stuff on the streets around USF. There are a lot of rich kids at that school. But then again, I'm not a betting man, because the last thing I need to be is any more broke.

San Diego yelpers mix it up at The Office Bar!

This past Saturday evening, San DIego's Elite Squad descended upon The Office Bar in North Park with mix CDs in tow! It was a mix CD swap party, and everyone walked away with a newfound love of cutting edge jams.

Sticking with the music theme, Rock Band was 'a ROCKIN' on a projection screen, testing the shredding talents of Yelp's wannabe grungers.

Big ups to Dave from Alex's Brown Bag deli for supplying 45 feet of Philly Cheese Steaks! They were literally gone in 45 seconds... proving once again that yelpers love to eat! Svedka Vodka also deserves a round of applause for getting our crew good and crunk!

Also, be on the lookout for a BIG announcement soon! We're throwing the biggest party ever to hit San Diego Yelp very soon and we're sure you'll be stoked.

Portland Elites Hit the Wall!

Posted by Laura Nestler

It was a dark and stormy Sunday night as Autumn has abruptly taken Portland by storm. Literally. But that didn't stop over 100 Yelp Elites and guests from tackling Paddy's legendary Wall of Booze, known only as "The Wall." Img_0864

The Wall is stocked with over 600 selections of spirits from around the World, innocently resting on on 7 shelves accessed only by a 14 foot ladder, (and a Yelp name tag)! Michelle H recounts her experience: "Jenny C and I stared in awe at the wall. It really is a sight, and while you can't help but want each and every bottle for your very own, you have to stop and wonder--just how much would a wall like this set you back?" You'll have to check out the reviews to see her magic math in action. Img_0897_3

Armed with Yelp shot glasses and hard earned hoodies, rookie elites mingled with the vets and both enjoyed their favorite libations from The Wall while snacking on some of the best comfort food in town. Overall, this Sunday evening event made for some priceless Monday morning yelping!

A giant thanks to the kind folks at Paddy's for hosting, and of course the ever vigilant Andrew C for digitally capturing the evening.

Want more details? Check out the pics!

Peace from PDX,
Laura N

Bizarre Yelping with Andrew Zimmern

Posted by Sam Perwin

Bizarre_foods_sea_slug If it looks good, eat it, right? Well, Andrew Zimmern, host of Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods, who's been on a quest to try any – and we mean any – and every odd cuisine the world has to offer, has been living by this motto since his days growing up in New York City, and manages to keep it alive today in his current home town of Minneapolis. We had the pleasure to sit down with the king of culinary creepy to pick his brain on jewel-encrusted scimitar belt buckles, walnuts, and just what was that thing he ate in Chile.

Yelp: You recently premiered your new season of Bizarre Foods, what initially led you on your quest to try anything and everything?

AZ: My Dad was a big advertising maverick in the 50s and 60s and I grew up in that food revolution that was taking place in New York. We’d eat chicken feet in Chinatown or enjoy Cuban fare like black bean soup at Victor’s. He was also an International traveler with a lot of eating experience and took me with him. Wherever we went we ate what the locals ate.

Yelp: You grew up in New York, what do you miss about the city most?

The pocket of ethnic food enthusiasm. The hustle and bustle of the streets – the action. That saltwater smell. The fact you can get any food known to man in an extremely well made version at any hour of the day.

Yelp: If Yelpers wanted to have their own “Bizarre Foods” experience in New York, what neighborhoods should they hit up?

Of course the two Chinatowns in Flushing and Lower Manhattan.  Definitely Astoria for their Greek, Egyptian and Lebanese offerings. Brighton Beach’s M&I – it’s a transcendent experience – and cap it off with a visit to Little Korea. Many of the restaurants actually operate on Korean time given there are so many Korean investment firms in the area - meaning you can get an entire dinner service at 3am.

Yelp: And in a similar vein, what are your tips on gateway bizarre foods? As in, perhaps you go for fried grasshoppers before baked tarantulas?

AZ: Foods that get people across that bizarre bridge usually come from the ocean: Oysters, Crabs. They resemble bugs. So in essence, it’s jumping into the psychological shallow end of the pool. It really has nothing to do with taste or texture – it’s a brain thing.

Yelp: So, now that you call the Twin Cites home, what restaurants do you haunt?

AZ: One of my favorites is La Belle Vie for French food. Tea House for Schezwan. Porter and Frye, Restaurant Alma and Heidi’s are all  up-and-coming, and for the best pizza in the Midwest hand’s down, Punch.

Yelp: Are there any food-driven trends you’re currently seeing in Minneapolis?

AZ: There are two big things happening at the same time: small neighborhood, chef-driven restaurants are appearing, like Café Maude, as well as Heidi’s and Alma. Food is being taken seriously, but not necessarily just downtown. Rather, restaurants are opening up where the customers are. Second, we’re seeing ethnic food becoming more honest and authentic. Previously, you saw immigrants cooking for subsequent waves of immigrants. Minneapolis is now seeing a rebirth, and with that some of the best Vietnamese, Hmong and Ethiopian food can be found – especially on University Avenue.

Yelp: Is there anything you wouldn’t try - something mundane like a water dog or bananas - not giant beetles.

AZ: Walnuts  – I can’t stand the flavor of a raw walnut.

Yelp: OK, so when you’re not eating fish heads, where are the places you go when you’re really hungry?

AZ: The best New York burgers are at JG Melon on 74th & 3rd. For a good steak, Peter Luger. Got to go to Carnegie Deli for a pastrami and brisket. Any Papaya King. Nobu or Jewel Bako for Japanese. And every time we come we go to Da Silvano, my wife’s favorite.

Yelp: What’s the last really bizarre thing you bought whether it was outrageous, expensive or just plain weird and where did you get it?

AZ: Orange prison grab from Korea. They look like thick cotton canvas pajamas. They’re actually worn in very specific set of Korean saunas. That and I just bought a jewel encrusted rock star belt buckle with scimitar swords. It’s an everyday type belt.

Yelp: And of course, inquiring Yelpers want to know, what is the most bizarre thing you have ever put in your mouth?

AZ: Definitely Piure - iodine-tasting puffy creatures found in Chile.

Be sure to catch Andrew on Bizzare Foods every Tuesday night at 10pm on The Travel Channel!

Denver Yelp's Brew-Ha-Ha

Thanks to our latest Elite Event at the Great Divide Brewery Denver yelpers can now tell you a thing or two about how to make some seriously strong brews! Great Divide, the 23rd best brewery in the world as Kym B tells us, served up Samurai rice beer, Titan IPA and Raspberry Ale alongside Marco's Coal Fired Pizza's offering of, well pizza, and wings for Denver's October Elite Squad event. And boy, was it a blast!

Denver yelpers took a tour of the brewery which created many reenactments of the intro to Laverne and Shirley. With all those bottles lined up, ready to be filled who can blame us? In between tours and learning, there was mini pumpkin decorating fun with prizes from the Denver Roller Dolls going to the cream of the crop.

And one of our very own elites served as photog for the evening. Kealoha V, let us know in no uncertain terms that not only can he capture the essence of a gummy bear, he knows how to use his camera on a crowd of people, too. Many, many thanks to him for the pictures of the evening. You can see them all here.

All in all it was a night that will be hard to top. But, we'll try our hardest next month. Until then, fair yelpers, SYOY (See You On Yelp)!

Seattle's Yelp Elite Celebrate Oktoberfest!

Posted by Katie Scharer

Question: What's more fun than a barrel of sauerkraut?
Answer: A bar full of Yelpers, of course!

Seattle's Yelp Elite Squad joined up at Ballard Loft last Wednesday night for a some seriously fun partying, Oktoberfest style. Beck's provided our Squad with libations of the Regular and Oktoberfest variety, while the awesome folks at Ballard Loft served up Sliders, Hot Wings, and quesadillas.

Yelpers were encouraged to wear their most clever tee, as there was a 'Wit T-shirt Contest', and they did not disappoint!  2908510399_38581d039c

Scott K
donned his 'A city built on rock & roll would be structurally unstable' tee, while Carrie H busted out her 'Make Me a Sandwich' shirt.

Yelpers voted by applause on who's tee reigned supreme and in the end, it was Will L who beat out Helen H in her 'Where my hose at?' (picture of a fire hose) tee and Andrew F, who's tee read the following in pixelated font- "A wizard turns you into a whale. Is this awesome. Click yes or no."

WIll's Winning tee:

He was awarded with a basket of cured meats, stone ground mustard, and sauerkraut from Seattle Favorite Bavarian Meat Delicatessen in Pike Place Market. Gotta love that schnitzel!

Thanks to everyone for coming out for a great party!  Until next time, SYOY... and Prost!

'Show Us Your Grill' with the Atlanta Elite Squad!

Posted by Deanna Jue

And show some grill, indeed! The Yelp Atlanta Elite Squad headed to Woodfire Grill for much fun involving blackberries and gold teeth (We'll explain)!

Picture_6 The Woodfire Grill, a spot heralded for their au natural organic and locally sourced cuisine, is recently under new ownership by our gracious hosts for the evening, Nick and Bernard. They started things off with a Blackberry Bramble, the cocktail hit of the night. And with fresh muddled blackberries, we were all asking for the recipe! Also at the bar, tasty libations from winery Lapostolle, with a  smooth Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot to pair. The hor'dourves got resounding 'oohs' and 'aaahs,' with tastes like the corn meal fried sweet pepper stuffed with cheese grits, sweet potato gnocchi, and foie gras mousse on petite pecan toasts. And the hit of the night was the spoonfuls of Vietnamese steak.

Things got interesting in the Atlanta Photography hosted "Show Us Your Grill" photo booth. The theme? The Seven Deadly Sins, as Max S & Picture_2Frank L snapped away photos for inclusion in their upcoming gallery show. Scenes filled with gold teeth, backstabbing, lust, and greed, oh my! If you want to see the final piece (and quite the piece of art do yelpers make!), check out The Granite Room from October 4 - 31, 2008, to see some Elite Hotness. And the rest of the pictures are housed here!

Though, yes, we (as in our entire city!) were out of gas (yes, literally.), the Elite Squad showed up in droves to party the night away. Alexa G and Erin W both looked adorable in their matching dresses (see photo!), Wallace S strolled in too! Molly S mingled the night away, and we sadly had to say goodbye to moving up North Jill G. Yelp's Grass is Greener in Miami

Posted by Maria Arguello

Miami yelpers descended en masse upon Grass the dark and sensuous restaurant/lounge in the Design District. Elites like JoseLuis A sampled mini grilled churrasco and chicken skewers.  While Sabrina C really enjoyed the yummy Yelp drinks and thought the tangy, sweetness suited the yelpers perfectly.

Thanks to the lovely Miriam W from NYC for coming down and getting the inaugural Elite Event started with a bang. And of course thanks to our phenomenal photographer, Jipsy on hand to capture the sweet and sultry action.  Don't forget to scope out the photos on flickr!

Don't forget to mark you calendars for Yelp Fright Night! event on Friday, October 17th at 8:00p.m.  Be there and Be scared.

Until then, SYOY!

Houston Elites, Wine and Sweets at Boheme Cafe & Wine Bar

Posted by Farrah Akhtar

After experiencing Hurricane Ike and, for many, weeks without electricity, an Elite Event is just what yelpers needed to get back into the swing of things! The Houston Yelp Elite Squad and guests flocked over to Montrose gem Boheme Cafe & Wine Bar for a long-awaited night of mixing and mingling. Complimentary wine was a flowin', as sweet-toothed yelpers munched on savory treats provided by Crave Cupcakes . All of the flavors were insanely delectable, but many agreed that the granny smith apple cake with cinnamon frosting, along with the creamy red velvet, took the cake (so to speak). Good thing Sheri with Element 05 Oriental Medicine was there to provide guests with holistic health tips!

While jamming to their very own yelper-created music playlist, photographer and fellow yelper Bill O snapped shots of guests engaging in deep and thoughtful conversations—or something like that! And with the help of the amazing Austin CM, Kevin N, attendees quickly were registered for raffle prizes. In the end, Gretchen P scored two tickets to see MSTRKRFT courtesy of Warehouse Live, and Crystal L and Kyle O—hubby of Cory O—each won a pair of ComedySportz passes. Who's taking us?

Houston couldn't have experienced more perfect weather, as some yelpers preferred to sip their cold crisp grape juice (and frozen mojitos ... anyone try those? A-mazing!) on the front patio and back sculpture garden. Good thing Off! was on hand for those pesky post-Ike mosquitoes!

Until next time, Houston...

Yelp Boston Elites get a Taste of the Mediterranean

In true Yelp fashion, the Boston Elite Squad came out to Sabur to sample the savory Mediterranean life and send off Ligaya T with sweet wishes on her west coast journey! With impending economic mayhem and feelings of missing Miss Ligs, Sabur, which translates to "set your worries aside" was the perfect spot to chill out, get down and spend some time together!

Dsc_0314 With candles aglow, yelpers were greeted by the intoxicating scents of aromatherapy from Kameleon Healing. Sharing her gift for wellness and smells,  Cher K designed personalized samples for he Elites to take home!

Dsc_0337 The exotic Mediterranean theme permeated the night, with infused cocktails from 42 Below. Ben, our gracious liquor man, left no yelper thirsty, and made fast friends with Kabir H, Marc C and a bevy of yelp beauties.

Dsc_0473_2Sipping on honey-ginger and pomegranate-nutmeg libations, yelpers lounged on the supple, jewel-toned furniture and noshed on plate after plate of hummus, grilled Balkan sausages and zucchini and feta fritters from the Sabur kitchen.

Dsc_0294 In the spirit of traditional entertainment, Melina of Daughters of Rhea performed a sword-balancing, mind-blowing, booty-shakin' belly dancing routine. She had the crowd mesmerized and even took quite the liking to John L.

Dsc_0374 And what would an Elite event be without a little surprise? Amateur documentarian Trish F set her creativity ablaze with a video of Elites, friends and Yelp staff with messages of well-wishes for Ligaya T. Done on the DL, Trish presented it at the event! Tissues in hand, yelper veterans and the newly Elite were reminded of just why we belong to Yelp in the first place: the awesome, awesome people!

Hats off to Haris and his amazing staff at Sabur, Ben (our new friend) from 42 Below, our own Yumiko F for keeping the door in check, Cher from Kameleon Healing, Sandy from Selena's New Age Psychics and Melina and her wonderful daughters, from Daughters of Rhea.

Oh, and all those rad pictures you're feasting your eyes upon? A BIG thank you to Tatsu I for lending his photographic skills and sweet Nikon D80! For more happy snapshots, check out the photostream. Or share your thoughts on the night's festivities!

Looking forward to next time, Boston!

Dallas Yelpers Hula the Night Away!

Posted by Melody Lowe

Bellinis and leis and Hula dances, oh my! The Dallas Yelp Elite Squad kicked off their first event by donning Hawaiian shirts, red leis and big grins to the Grapevine Bar for a special luau. Yelpers slurped down a welcome frozen bellini, Pom Pom or Tangarita before slipping to the back for complimentary cocktails and beer on the breezy patio. Breeze? In Dallas? Yeah, that’s right. Even the weather was ready for a party. The hula dance lesson by Koli from the Odyssey Theatrical in Southlake helped work off the calories gained by noshing on the homemade red velvet, butter yellow and Devil’s Food Cake chocolate cupcakes. Yelpers happily put the pounds back on by diving into stacks of pizza from Fireside Pies on Lovers and Inwood. The luckiest couple of the night award went to Jamie and David H who both won the two $50 gift certificates back to the Grapevine Bar. Hmm, Luau part deux? Grapevinebaryelp14
